Sam Miller’s dreams are simple—to give back to the aunt who supported him since his mother's death and to have a family of his own. He focuses on making a success of their catering business Poppy's Pantry, and his close group of friends. However, when Aunt Poppy ends up in the hospital, it's a stranger Sam meets in the corridor who gives him the support he needs.
Rob Taylor is a man with secrets. His life in the public eye has taken its toll, and now he lives with the repercussions. When he finds himself falling for Sam, he knows things are finally going his way.
But just as Sam and Rob find their happiness, another secret threatens to tear them apart.
Nic Starr lives in Australia where she tries to squeeze as much into her busy life as possible. Balancing the demands of a corporate career with raising a family and writing can be challenging but she wouldn’t give it up for the world.
Always a reader, the lure of m/m romance was strong and she devoured hundreds of wonderful m/m romance books before eventually realising she had some stories of her own that needed to be told!
When not writing or reading, she loves to spend time with her family–an understanding husband and two beautiful daughters–and is often found indulging in her love of cooking and planning her dream home in the country.
Nope, not for me. Too many characters to keep track of for such a short book, WAY too many secrets and miscommunications and two lousy mutual jack offs is all we got for sex. Just not worth the time our money. Cannot recommend.
I enjoyed this book, it was a smooth easy read, keeping me invested in the relationship between Rob And Sam. Their two very dissimilar lives, but with a common thread of wanting someone just for them to trust and rely on. Rob’s not so good at that till the end. There is a delightful secondary cast of characters ripe for stories of their own and I look forward to reading them.
Nic Starr is an auto buy for me. This is a MM contemporary story. Rob and Sam are the main characters. Rob is a disgraced rockstar and Sam has had tragedy of his own. Great story of love winning in the end! I'll read more from this author.
I enjoyed reading Sam and Rob's story. They both cared about others. Rob liked to visit patients when he was working at the hospital, especially the children. Sam had met Rob at the hospital while visiting his aunt. Together Sam and his aunt worked hard to make their catering business, Poppy's Pantry a success. Rob and Sam were attracted to each other right away. They started spending time together getting to know each other. It was a good read.
Such an sweet slow burn romance. I really like Sam and Rob's story. It is great to see how they started out as friends and then become more as they both are overcoming past issues. This is such a beautiful story that Nic Starr has written.
I liked this overall. The story was pretty good and the writing was great. I enjoyed Rob as a character and seeing him rise above his past. What I didn’t like so much was Sam. He drove me nuts a lot of the time. He got mad at Rob for “keeping secrets”, but they were only together for a hot minute. You don’t learn everything about someone the first time you meet. Now, I could understand his first upset about Rob’s job but they talked about it and got over it. Life was fine. Then Sam got mad about something else again and it seemed over the top. He seemed like a real immature character so it annoyed me. Luckily it all worked out, but the lack of talking things through before having a conniption threw me off.

Sam meets Rob, a janitor at the hospital while Sam is visiting his aunt. They begin talking, which leads to lunch and eventually dates outside of the hospital. Things seem to be going well, but Rob has secrets he's keeping. When one comes out it threatens to tear their new relationship apart.
This hurts, because I have read a couple of Nic's later books, and loved them. Andrew's promise was one of my favorites, so when I was offered this one, I was really excited and couldn't wait to sit down and dig in. I loved the blurb, and parts of the book were great, but there just wasn't enough here. We had only a few scenes with the main characters together. I wanted more page time for the two of them together. I enjoy getting to see characters in their natural habitats, at their jobs with their friends and families, etc.. but this book had too much of that. It took away from time that we could have gotten to know Rob and Sam as a couple. Also, there were too many characters to keep up with. I understand wanting the readers to get to know the other characters to lead into other books, but it was a lot to keep up with. I think the secrets were too much, and the story wrapped up way too fast. It was all this hype, and then it was just over. I was left feeling unsatisfied.
This was a pretty good story but it lacked the erotic content that I crave in all books that I read. Much of the strong attraction between the two MCs was presented in the form of internal dialogue rather than physical expression.
A sweet story with sweet MCs. It would have benefitted from a bit more spice to create the perfectly balaced flavor profile for my palette.
I never read this when it was first release, and I am pretty new to Nic Starr's works, so it was nice to dive in fresh.
Sam is just too darn cute. I loved him from the minute he walked in to see his Aunt Polly. I just wanted to hug him and squeeze him and call him George.
I liked that Rob was going incognito, getting to know Sam, and Sam getting to know him as Rob, not as a public figure.
There is no much heat in this story, which I was expecting. I feel that this would be a good m/m book for the YA set.
There were lots of secondary characters (maybe a few too many and I was getting confuzzled) but there is great set up for the next book in the series.
Quick, enjoyable read, I look forward to the next book.
More than A Superstar is the first book in Nic Starr's More Than series, the book that I read was the second edition release. I'm fairly new to Starr's writing but I'm always excited to read more from authors whose writing style I just click with.
More than A Superstar is a complex, yet, stunningly sweet romance. The story starts with Sam Miller. His Aunt Poppy is in his hospital and Sam has been living under the stress of running the business which they normally run together. Sam is very close to his aunty who raised him after the death of his parents after a drunk driver hit their car. Despite the trauma in his life Sam has a very sunny outlook. He isn't looking for romance but the nice, quiet guy who he meets at the hospital, Rob, gives Sam the chance to think about something deep and meaningful.
Rob Taylor isn't all that he appears on the outside. Rob has had his past issues which stem from living the life of a celebrity. Luckily, his "costume" that came with his public persona made it easy enough for Rob to health, both physically and mentally, as well as deal with the fall out of his own mistakes. Rob has a lot of secrets and I can't give anything more without spoiling this wonderfully sweet book.
Rob and Sam have so much going on that doesn't seem like that there could be room for romance. However, this is what makes it easy to relate to both characters and believe their stories. I love how real the emotions felt as the characters navigated their romance between their own real life issues. Sam is a wonderful man, who loves his aunty and is passionate about the business that they started together. Meanwhile, Rob is trying his best to live a low-key life. He has come out of the end of an exceedingly difficult situation in his life amongst the complexities of being a rock star in the public eye and making his own mistakes along the way. There is a wonderful redemption for both characters as they fall in love and embrace their HEA.
Sam lost both of his parents by aged twenty. Just when he thought his life could not ever get better, not able to properly grieve in pops his aunt Poppy to give him the much needed love, friendship and grieving space. Such a loving figure in his life, she has an accident and ends up in the hospital for a few weeks. Taking on the responsibility of the family business he and his aunt shared, Sam is too mussy for a relationship, let alone love. Besides, he's twenty-two. Plenty of time, right?
Rob, an employee at the hospital where Poppy is a patient. Tired and struggling himself, he notices Sam and thought how beautiful he was. He introduces himself to Sam and things sort of take off from there. Random hellos, a few exchanged glances, laughs, hospital lunch. The attraction is pretty much immediate between them, but neither say anything right away.
Things can only be "perfect" for so long. The secrets they keep from one another become hard on the new and already struggling relationship. It was imperative these two remain together for them to completely overcome. Half truths are better than whole lies, right? In hindsight, not always.
What a beautifully written story about two young men navigating their way through love, acceptance, and grasping the much needed HEA.

This was a sweet slow-burn romance between Sam and Rob that had me captivated from the start. Both men are lovable characters. Both have secrets they don’t reveal right away. Sometimes half truths are more damaging than saying nothing at all, but I get why Rob doesn’t tell everything. It’s not easy to confess, especially not when you’re starting a relationship. The story progresses at a steady pace with a few sexy moments, just right for the kind of romance they have, and has a wonderful HEA.
Charming slow-burn romance, from friends to lovers and so much more. I enjoyed the character development of Sam and Rob. My heart often hurt for them as they hid parts of themselves. They both were struggling with so much and their connection was important to their survival. The writing was good and the story-line was engaging. I liked the pacing of the story, it kept me reading and enjoying.
This is book one of the More Than series and i am looking forward to the next book!
I was gifted this book from the author and i freely give my review
I read this book in one sitting and really enjoyed it! A sweet and heartwarming story with great characters in Sam and Rob. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
I loved this story it was a truly beautiful one about Sam who has had a rough time in his past and Rob who is having a rough time now but Rob will learn that keeping secrets isn’t always the best thing to do and Sam has to realize that people need to keep secrets until they are ready to let someone in. I highly recommend this book and looking forward to Book 2.
I really enjoyed reading this charming, poignant, sweet, grab-you-by-the-feels, sexy, delightful, and totally awesome twist on the traditional friends-to-lovers trope. Filled with secrets, misunderstandings, and finally a wonderful HEA ending, I would recommend getting this gem for yourself.
Don’t go into this book expecting lots of erotic moments. This is a slow, sweet, getting to know each other romance. Sam and Rob definitely have chemistry and definitely want to get to know each other better. They do have a lot of miscommunication but plenty of clues are given to the reader about what’s going on. I found them both to be very realistic, likeable characters who are believable and engaging, flaws and all. There are a lot of side characters which sets the scene for the next book in the series. This is an easy to read, fast paced book that flows along nicely. There’s some drama and emotion before a well earned HEA. Highly recommended if you’re after an easy to read, sweet with a smidge of heat romance. I’m looking forward to the next in the series.
Everyone has secrets, but when is a good time to spill? Sam Miller is a man who does not take anyone or life for granted. His Aunt took him in when his Mother passed and he contributes to their catering business Poppy's Pantry as an act of love. He gets lots of support from friends. But he still feels the pressure. Rob working in the hospital, keeps his head down. He is damaged and feels the weight of the luggage he drags. They meet and feel the pull. They compliment each other and cautiously find comfort in each other. Can they open up to each other? Can they trust each other? Will they accept each other's secrets? They grow and change as their relationship progresses. Is it enough? Nice read. Great guys. Characters give you a feel good vibe while you root for Sam and Rob. excellent start to a new series. I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Nice cover art!
When you see famous people in the media falling over and looking sloppy, remember this book, not everything may be as it appears. We meet Sam Miller who has been a frequent visitor over the last two weeks at the hospital visiting his Aunt Poppy, who had broken her hip. He is a good nephew, brings her flowers and keeps her updated on what’s going on at the bakery she owns and that he is running while she is down for the count and such. While at the hospital he occasionally encounters Rob, a good looking young man who seems to be a janitor. But Rob does so much more for the patients he encounters, that is not part of his job, and Sam starts to notice him. Bit by bit they get to know each other and a romance is born.
Don’t start thinking that everything is sunshine and roses, because Rob is hiding some serious secrets from Sam. One, that he is a well-known rock singer who is actually at the hospital doing community service work because of a drunk driving conviction and the other, well you all know me by now, I am not giving a major spoiler but there is another secret that could have meant life or death for Rob. He really should have been more honest with Sam about his secrets. Sam is one of that type of people who does not like surprises. t we all know how cruel and invading they can be, right?
So anyway, back to the guys. Rob’s secrets cause a major break in the relationship which lasts for months before Rob comes clean about what has really been going on. Sam is astounded by the strength and determination and just how alone Rob has been through a situation that every other normal person would have had a major support group of friends and family around them to help when things got bad. Not our bad lil boy, he kept it all to himself while continuing to do his penance. At the same time he became involved with a children’s concert that took even more of his strength that he could hardly afford to expend.
All along in this tale Sam was being told not to judge a book by its cover, that there was more to the story and that he should sit with Rob and find out what was really going on. But like most men, Sam got stuck in a groove he couldn’t seem to get out of concerning what he thought he knew about Rob. It also didn’t help to have a “mean girl” in the group who, when Rob has to break a date, tells everyone that she saw Rob at a hotel and that he was falling over drunk to the point of vomiting, thus causing Sam to believe that Rob is not as clean and sober as he had told Sam.
It all comes to a head and thankfully they work it out as Rob appears with his band to perform at a cancer benefit that Sam is catering. Rob lays out all his truths in hope of getting his man back. I wish we had a little more to the story telling us what happened if and when Rob’s real story hit the news, but we can’t have it all now can we?
I recommend this book and hope you enjoy it as much as I have! See you on the next review!

Sweet romance with light angst. Sam and Rob meet and become friends first then start dating. Rob has secrets and trust issues and so does Sam. Rob's secrets come back to cause problems with Sam. They had great chemistry and after some misunderstandings, which would have easily been resolved if Rob had just let go of his pride and confided in Sam, they get their HEA.
Review first posted on Nautical Star Books . I received one copy of this book from the author at no charge in exchange for my honest review.
If you love a sweet and tender romance with only a touch of angst, you will really enjoy More than a Superstar. The writing just flows perfectly in this book, giving us a wonderful peak inside each character. This is a slow ‘get to know you’ kind of story with the characters falling in love while still trying to deal with the complications that come with a new relationship.
First off in More than a Superstar, we meet Sam who helps run an event planning business and is in the hospital visiting his aunt. He is a bit shy and not exactly the most experienced guy when it comes to dating so when he stumbles into Rob the janitor he is a bit dumbstruck about what to say!
Rob is taking a break from his life as a popular rock star to work as a janitor in the hospital. Health issues make it impossible to continue with the band for the moment and he enjoys working at the hospital. He spends time not only as a janitor but also loves spending time with patients, especially the kids. I honestly loved his character and think the author did a wonderful job creating a man who is hard working and compassionate but who also has his own issues to deal with.
Sam and Rob’s relationship moves along very slowly and they truly fall in love over the coarse of the book. They will have to overcome a few issues, though, before they get their happily ever after!
Throughout the book we see Sam jumping to conclusions and Rob refusing to be totally honest with Sam for fear of appearing weak. These are slightly flawed characters that finally figure things out but not after a bit of stress!
I did feel that the book could have been a bit longer to help fully develop the characters and their relationship. I loved Sam and Rob but I wish I had gotten to know each of them a bit more. There was a lot going on outside of the relationship in terms of the story so I don’t think I really got enough of the two of them together.
Overall, though, More than a Superstar was a wonderfully sweet romance with very realistic characters.
My Rating: 4 of 4 Stars (Based on the Short&Light Read Category)
I have to give it to Nic Starr, she really makes me smile. A. Lot. With More Than A Superstar, she gives us a Christmas Holiday little story where two men make it through the trials they face.
We have one Sam Miller whose life revolves around his aunt and their catering and party planning business. Life is good for him and his aunt. His friends are great. His best friend Noah is fantastic. The only thing missing is a romance which he knows he could have if only he found the right man to share his life with.
Then we have one Rob Taylor. He is the janitor in the hospital where Sam's aunt is hospitalized for a broken hip. He does his work, he socializes with the patients, he is a trustworthy worker. He is also darned beautiful.
When Rob and Sam meet, there was a spark there and it soon lit to flame. But just like any fire, it starts out with sparks, flares of heat, and resistance to stay lit before it finally catches and engulfs the fuel around it. Fire can be finicky, especially when said fire is that of a rising star who does not want to be seen outside of the stage. How could that be? Well, that is what Rob is trying to do and Sam wanting to find out the why of. As the two men circle each other, keeping secrets from the other, unwilling to show any sign of weakness, we see a struggle to be open fighting with the need to show strength.
Sigh. That is just like men. Egos are a problem. Secretive when they really should open up. Men.
Starr has brought us a little story of two men who are afraid to let go and just be. How they deal, well that's where the friends come in. The most unexpected things can happen when the two finally let it all out. It all happens this Christmas and it's a joy to read.
I just finished this not 5 minutes ago. Oh my! I absolutely loved the meet, get to know, feel things out, go on dates and fall in love of this story! I suspected what was reveled towards the end and loved how it was handled. Rob and Sam were what each other needed and deserved after both of the hardships they were dealt in the past and current time. As per usual , there were difficult times, hot times, loving times and confusing times. From the first page the story flowed so beautifully. We get to meet side characters that are just as interesting as Rob and Sam are and I hope they all get their stories told. I wanted to smack someone for being such a biotch . You'll know exactly who very quickly. I recieved an Advanced Readers Copy for my honest review .
'More Than A Superstar' is my second read by Nic Starr. I'm beginning to see that sweetness and romance are this author’s niche. The writing is good, and the storyline is entertaining. Both Sam and Rob are warm, vibrant characters with their own share of strengths and weaknesses.
Sam and Rob meet at the hospital where Rob is an orderly and Sam is visiting his Aunt Poppy. Sam is surprised by how easy he finds it to talk to Rob about all the many stressful things going on in his world since his aunt fell and broke her hip. Sam is charmed when he hears Rob taking the time to sit, visit, and sometimes sing to the patients on the floor. Slowly these two young men begin spending more time together, and it's inevitable that feelings develop, on both sides. But there are secrets abounding, and nothing can move forward until the air is cleared.
This was a great, fast-paced read with lots to hold my interest.
I really liked both Sam and Rob. They had terrific chemistry. I’m not normally a fan of stringing readers along when there’s something going on with a character, but I felt it worked in this case. There were plenty of clues.
The way Rob refused to be honest with Sam had me both sympathetic and wanting to smack some sense into him. The way they kept talking past each other felt real.
There were only a couple of things I noticed. First, there were a few times toward the beginning when I thought the author relied too much on telling us things and not enough on showing it. Second, the way the thing with Rob was resolved wasn’t realistic. He’d have needed to tell Sam eventually anyway because he’d have needed follow-up after the initial issue was done.
Other than that, this was an enjoyable story with great characters, and I’m glad I read it.
Nic Starr has an amazing ability to write realistic characters. Of course, just like most books, there's always drama. And I want to just say, I got very frustrated with the miscommunications and secrets that hover over Rob and Sam. But that's real life folks. We all run, we don't always face it right away. We let fear dictate the truths we tell. Why lie? because in the moment it's safe. I feel Rob and Sam are stuck in this web for some time in this book. They gradually fall in love. Which I really was happy. No insta love. Very real. I focused more on the characters and emotion than the plot, but I did love the plot and thought it had great flow. I wish it was longer but it was great and I really loved these guys!
Sam and Rob's story is a fairly sweet, low-heat, contemporary romance, with a touch of angst and drama. For me, all the drama that came from the secrets and miscommunication was a little over-the-top, but I definitely did enjoy the story, and found the connection between the MCs to be tangible and well-developed. Would have loved an epilogue but hoping this isn't the last we'll see of Sam and Rob in this series!
