Half really good, half kinda meh. This story doesn’t do a lot for me when it comes to the alien stuff, which is my favorite thing in Goosebumps. But the book still ain’t that bad but had notable flaws. Let’s start with the great of this book. Mr. Fleshman is probably my favorite creepy neighbor character in all of goosebumps. He’s super likable for being this really funny and chill guy and also having weird secrets and contraptions in his house. I had a lot of fun reading about him here, and Jack, our main character, was pretty good too. Now for a weird little thing I liked, I enjoyed how crazy the story got towards the end; Jack was having a breakdown trying to resolve certain issues, to keep it spoiler free, and it was nice seeing how complex Jack felt. A+ goosebumps writing there! Might I add that this could be a take on schizophrenia, anxiety, or mental illnesses in general which is super neat. At my final upside, the first half of the book had a read nice and fun mystery involving Mr. Fleshman which could’ve been its own short story if you change a certain line at the end of the first half of the book (it’s split up into to sections in a way). Very good—but the book has faults. The biggest issue is how annoying some characters can get. The little shit sister, the “friends” that are actually straight up bullies, the parents at times, and there’s probably more that I’m forgetting. They all have this in common: fucking annoying ahh bitches. Moving on from the constant bullying and annoyance issues, the book doesn’t necessarily lack a plot, but it lacks much of anything. It doesn’t bother me that much but it’s noticeable that Stine is just trying to find a way to get to the sequel book where, well, alien shenanigans finally go down I presume since it didn’t really happen here. Overall, the book gets an 8/10. A low eight out of ten sadly but I will admit I did enjoy this more from my original read nearly 5 years ago. Anywho, Jack likes staring at girls legs!! So cool!!
