White Hot [Dramatized Adaptation]

Rate this book
The Hidden Legacy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews continues as Nevada and Rogan navigate a world where magic is the norm…and their relationship burns hot.

Nevada Baylor has a unique and secret skill—she knows when people are lying—and she's used that magic (along with plain, hard work) to keep her colorful and close-knit family's detective agency afloat. But her new case pits her against the shadowy forces that almost destroyed the city of Houston once before, bringing Nevada back into contact with Connor "Mad" Rogan.

Rogan is a billionaire Prime—the highest rank of magic user—and as unreadable as ever, despite Nevada’s “talent.” But there’s no hiding the sparks between them. Now that the stakes are even higher, both professionally and personally, and their foes are unimaginably powerful, Rogan and Nevada will find that nothing burns like ice…

Adapted from the novel and produced with a full cast of actors, immersive sound effects and cinematic music!

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

This is such a fun and addictive series!

In typical Ilona Andrews fashion, there is action, sassy and fleshed-out characters, magic, and a slow-burn romance that does not take the focus away from the main plot.

The world-building remains mostly the same, but the politics expand in this sequel. It remains simple, yet very engaging and interesting. The politics of the Houses is also a part I enjoyed very much in this sequel. There is also the usual dose of action, car chase, fighting, and magic-wielding, typical of Ilona Andrews' series, and it made this book an engaging, quick read that was nearly impossible to put down.

We get to see more Houses and the way they interact with each other. I was so happy to see that Cornelius was part of the adventure, because I really liked what little we saw of him in the first book (also, ferret spies!!!). I am even happier to see that he will be there in the third book, too. Augustine was a nice addition to the gang, too. It’s funny how we all hated him at first, and now I see that he has his own novella, so he ends up being well-liked, despite his rough start.

Rogan stepped between me and them, his eyes full of something. Whatever it was—pride? Admiration? Love?—I held on to it like it was a lifeline. He understood. At some point in his life he had stood just like that, while people stared at him in horror, and he must’ve felt alone, because now he was here, and he was shielding me from their judgment.

Nevada remains an awesome, kickass main character. She is flawed and too stubborn at times, but that’s why I love her so much. She is not the indestructible badass MC who thinks she can take on anyone. She is very aware of her limitations, but is willing to risk everything for her family. The love she has for her family is so pure and heartwarming. My questions about Nevada’s secrecy when it comes to her magic are finally answered! It was one little detail that bugged me in the first book. I didn’t get why it was so important that Nevada kept her magic a secret, but it all makes sense now.

Rogan becomes more interesting in this book, as we see more of his layers. The same can be said of the secondary characters. They are all fleshed out and easy to connect with. The cast is the main reason I am addicted to this series. Nevada’s family is impossible not to love, the secondary characters have depth and are not simply there as accessories for the main characters, and the villains have a complex plan that is more than simply a quest for money and power. It remains a thirst for power at its core, but it has many moving pieces and involves so many people; I do believe we will be surprised by some of its members.

The romance is a good and heated slow-burn. Nevada and Rogan have been attracted to each other since they first met, and each interaction adds fuel to the sexual tension between them. The series focused more on the plot than the romance so far, but I like it this way. Rogan remains a shady character at times with some red flags, but I don't think anyone can resist his intensity and swoornworthy moments. He has not entered my temple of all-time favorite book boyfriends, but I like him a lot, and I do understand the hype.

Nevada’s family is hectic, intense, and wonderful. I love them all, and I loved every single moment we saw them interact. I also like the mystery around some of their powers. It is hinted that they might be more powerful than we think, but we do not know yet what Nevada’s sisters can do, and I am really intrigued.

I like that this series is only a trilogy. I just finished the Mercy Thompson series, and I was sad to lose interest as it dragged on for too long. This series is fast-paced and engaging, and I can’t wait to read the last book.

I’m still not a fan of the casting for the graphic audio, but I do love this book and enjoyed my reread. It also has a bonus scene of when Rogan and Nevada met for the first time from Rogan’s POV. I’ve gotten used to Rogan’s voice (though it was weird to find out the same voice actor was Nick Feldman in the Kate Daniels GA’s), but Augustine (too mature) and Cornelius (too deep) just do not match their characters to me. So for the GA, I’m going to give 3 stars.

I love so much about White Hot though - the ferret heist, Nevada coming into who she is, the development and progression of her relationship with Rogan, Catalina and Leon’s magic reveals, and the bomb about the Baylor family tree. You can read my original 5 star review of the book from 2023 here.

The book is fantastic. Not a huge fan of the casting for this adaptation, however. It makes Nevada seem shrill and hysterical rather than the smart, professional person she is.

This series only suffers from the fact that it isn't Kate Daniels. Otherwise, it's about dang perfect. (I don't hate the 3-6 Catalina/Alessandro books as much as some do, but I definitely have an affinity for the Nevada and Connor chemistry.) In this one, Nevada/Rogan continue their flirtation, their investigation into the big Prime conspiracy, and we get to know some of the supporting cast a little better. Plus, a new evil Prime sets her sights on Nevada as she starts to really learn what she can do. It's the second book in the series and there is some world building in the first book, so definitely don't start here. They aren't standalones and, anyway, Burn for Me is a lot of fun.

Also, probably don't start with the GA books -- in my opinion, GA is for re-listens, not first-time listens -- but then again I'm also not a fan of Renee Raudman as an audiobook reader and have taken to avoiding anything narrated by her, so take that into consideration.

Basic Plot: Nevada and Rogan are thrown together again to investigate a murder and find more evidence of conspiracy.

I love this author team, this series, and Graphic Audio. I'm still warming up to the voice actor for Rogan, but he's growing on me.

Book: Still excellent, still one of my all-times favourites that I never get tired to reading (or listening to)!

Audiobook: I enjoyed the GA production overall buuuut Rogan's voice took me some time to get used to and I am not a fan of Augustine's (Nevada is perfectly cast).

White Hot Dramatized Adaptation (Hidden Legacy #2) by Ilona Andrews 2026 relisten: Not much to add. This one gives new insight to the talents in the Baylor family, a new threat arrives, and there are some very interesting twists. Fun times. Now, on to the new release of the GA version of WILDFIRE!

Original 2025 review: First time for the Graphic Audio version thought I've read/listened to the original version several times. Love the series. Love the full-cast adaptations. In this second book, Nevada learns more about her personal magic, her relationship with Connor Rogan is further defined, LOTS of stuff happens, and it is an over-all enjoyable listen. If you like the idea of full-cast audio books, enjoy Urban Fantasy that's got a different set of rules, and you've never tried this series, please do. BURN FOR ME is the first book. Start there.

Hopefully, GA won't take too long to get the 3rd book produced and out in the world. I'll settle for the single narrator version of the next for now. And yes, once, WILDFIRE is released by GA, I'll be doing a relisten of the whole series because they are just that much fun.

Graphic Audio: While I still prefer the original solo narration, I’m really starting to enjoy this Graphic Audio version. The voices are growing on me, and the immersive production definitely brings the story to life and adds a new layer to the world-building. The story itself remains superb!

White Hot is book two in the Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews.

An unforgettable and monuments adventure.

OMG! WOW! Outstanding! Yes! I want more…

I had chills reading this. It's soooo good. Nevada is getting deeper into the mystery of who she is, deeper into the Houses world and politics, and the plot thickens. Something big is happening. When you think you have things figured out the author throws out a curveball. Nevada didn’t see or plan for some of the possibilities that arise. Now she has some hard life choices to make that will affect her and her family.

The romance was wonderful. Her relationship with Conner is changing in a big way and she starts to see him in a different light. I loved seeing Conner and Nevada come together and make strides in their not so relationship, that turns into something more. Their sexual tension was strong in book one, Burn for Me, but here it lights the city up.

I have to say the epilogue, girl squeal! And the end, OMG the author drops a big bomb.

As always the Andrews team delivered a sensational story. White Hot is packed full. Their is no shortage of action, plot, humor, and romance. This whole book will keep you on your toes, throw curveballs at you, and at the end all you want is more, more, more. All I wanted to do was read the book all over again. I’m on pins and needles waiting for the last and final installment, Wildfire.

Heather's Notes
I have read these books several times, and listened to several graphic audios. I generally prefer the book and that is the case here, but I found that the speech Cornelis gave about his wife in the audio much more moving than in the book. I could "feel" the emotions. I also miss the Rogan POVs from the actual book we are in. We got Rogan's POV from the circle in this book, but there were others and they were left out. It was very disappointing.

Another absolutely stellar production from Ilona Andrews and Graphic Audio! Look, these authors - everything they’ve ever written - are a comfort read for me. I’ve re-read their collected works many times, but never written full reviews. We’re fixing that now.

We’re back with Team Baylor. Nevada is once again talked into taking a case that’s outside their investigative wheelhouse, but this time, it’s for a friend. Yep, our fave animal mage, Cornelius is back! His wife has been assassinated and he’s set on revenge. Nevada is once again forced to team up with Connor to solve the mystery and protect her family. The only problem is that Connor’s been MIA since she declined his affair offer and she’s holding a grudge.

There’s so much plot movement and character advancement in this one. Remember the evil shadow organization from Burn for Me? They’re back, they’re bigger and they’re more evil. Nevada’s powers are growing and we learn more about the powers of Catalina, Leon and have hints of Arabella’s. We see figures and memories from Rohan’s past and learn more about the WHY of him. All of this set against the backdrop of intelligent writing, incredible humor and slow burn chemistry.

Things we’re here for -
Nevada absolutely going for it with her power
Matilda and Bunny
Rogan’s devoted crew and how he’ll take care of the Baylors no matter what they say
Ferret heist!

Another mixed bag on my enjoyment for the GA adaptation. White Hot as the original novel is my favorite in the trilogy so I’m pretty disappointed in this adaptation. Most of my complaints from the first adaptation still stand this go around, though I would say overall it was fine. Such faint praise for a beloved story. Sigh.

I’m still struggling with the over exaggerated narration given by Clay for the non dialogue, it verges on insincere and insipid. She also kept pronouncing “important” as “imporDant”. REPEATEDLY. Cue nails on chalkboard.

Again, I don’t understand why there’s another female narrator for the third person narrator. Seems unnecessary and also I just can’t stand the stuffy nose quality of her voice.

This go around we actually got the Rogan POV scenes, albeit only from the last book and not in addition to this book’s scenes. I really enjoyed Kramer’s performance all around and his narration during the Rogan POV scene made me wish he was the primary narrator over Clay :/ I could almost tolerate her portrayal of Nevada when I only had to listen to her external dialogue.

Highlights:
1. Leon’s psychotic voice over
2. Ferret heist
3. Cornelius’ emotional through line
4. Basically the entirety of the comedic supporting cast (i.e. Catalina, Arabella, grandma Frida, Leon, Bug)

Please, dear god, let Alessandro in Wildfire be more than tolerable 🙏🏻🙏🏻

4 stars for this dramatized adaptation of a 5 star book. I LOVE this book. This audio rendering of it is entertaining. I liked most of the character actors.

My main problem is the sound mixing and editing. The background music playing throughout scenes is so distracting and takes away from the emotional impact of the scene. There is one sad scene that I normally tear up when I read it, but in this I laughed because the music was so corny. I really wish Graphic Audio would get better sound designers because right now they remind me of recent college grads who feel the need to place as much background sound as possible to have something to show for their work, instead of letting the scene and their work speak for itself.

Still worth a listen - a phenomenal fantasy romance acted out.

This is one of my favorite books in one of my favorite series. But though normally Graphic Audio hits the mark with their narrators, they missed it in this one.
The voice actor for Connor Rogan is terrible. He shows no emotion. He is flat. Given that he is one of the main characters, his lack of inflection ruined the whole book for me. Also, the voice actress for Nevada is terrible in the opposite way: she exaggerates. There's too much emotion, and Nevada doesn't have that kind of personality. She's no-nonsense and level-headed, and the actress had her screaming, crying, whining all the time.
And don't even get me started on Augustine Montgomery.
All in all, a disappointment.

The family in this series is so great, I love that you get a bit more of them in this book. The sisters are so interesting, I love Leon and Bern, and Grandma is amazing as usual. The continuation of Rogan's and Nevada's relationship is tumultuous, facing many obstacles. There are new players on the scene, as Nevada starts to get immersed into the Prime Society in Houston. The danger and conspiracy surrounding what Adam Pierce did in book one starts to get more intense throughout, erupting in a battle of magic and will. It is just such an addicting world and story, the narration is wonderful and I can't wait to hear the next volumes as well.

3.75⭐️ rounded to 4 for Goodreads. I’m enjoying the story and the performances are great in the graphic audio. I’m just not feeling the chemistry between the main characters. They went from zero to sixty very quickly especially with the FMC hating him for most of book one and two. The investigation was the best part and I want more with Cornelius and his animal magic. Side note: Anyone else feeling like SJM took a lot of liberties with the comparisons with this trilogy and her Crescent City one?

I have read this series several times, listened on audio and finally GraphicAudio released this full cast production. It is outstanding and certainly meets the high standard Ilona Andrews sets in their writing. No summary other than it is about magic and magical creatures and lots of action keeping the bad magical people in line. If you enjoy urban fantasy, any of their books in any format is a must read.

I love this series, it's Ilona Andrews at their finest. I know others had issue with the voice actor for Rogan in the first book, but I thought he was good. Rogan in the 1st book is very cold and distant and I thought the actor portrayed that well. It isn't until the 2nd book we get to see more from Rogan, and I thought the actor did a good job with that.

The three men (Connor Rogan, Cornelius Harrison, Augustine Montgomery) do not sound like what imagined when I read the book.

Connor, when given more than a couple of lines, sounded like a guy from an old PI TV series.
Cornelius...well, I was expecting him to sound nicer. The song at the end was great.
Augustine - I just thought he would've sounded different.
