Outstanding narration and sound effects in this short, fast-paced audiobook. A twisty, but sometimes confusing thriller that I enjoyed. I loved the ending!

🎯She is a world renowned and well respected in her field. She wrote a book where she talks about her father and his tendency to teach her all about Abraham Lincoln.
🎯 Alice is avoiding Jim Price, her former partner because they used to sleep together. Which turned out to be an affair because he lied when she asked if he was married. It took her months to figure out his “tell” and realize it.
Present Day🎤

Alice is heading to Jakobs Pointe on the case of a murdered Federal Marshal Eric Matthew Driskle, who spent the last 10 years living there as the handler of 29 people I the Witness Protection Program. He was first poisoned with arsenic, which he tried to throw up, so he was bludgeoned to death with a hammer on Landings Beach (14x is personal as hell) and it was recorded. All of his money was stolen and he was found by the man who has played Santa Clause every year for more than 25 years (Robert Clark). He had a hit out on him. Of the 29ppl he was protecting none of them were supposed to know about each other, nor does the police know they’re informants. The Chief of Police is a Black woman named Constance who’s married to the coroner, but she doesn’t know he is also an informant. He was a plastic surgeon that used to change the faces of criminals to evade the law. Irony. Everyone including Constance thought Eric worked with computers and everyone knew he was a bit of a drunk. He was last seen with Robert at the bar playing pool for money with Rob losing 300 bucks, but Eric only has one beer while the other man was plastered.
The Suspects that Stand Out and the only ones that are a huge part of the plot: 🤦🏾♀️
🧊A corrupt police officer who turned over evidence on 3 ppl in his precinct and then supposedly murdered his partner (Reggie Harlow who was Mikah Hopkins) a black man. Ugh what a shocker. The story is he turned in 3 cops in his unit and murdered his partner. Eric was his friend. He says he didn’t murder anyone and he didn’t turn and Eric knew that.
🧊A drug mule who trafficked billions in cocaine (Ariana Ortiz). She runs a flower shop and was dating Eric while also having had a thing with Santa. She’s 29/30, beautiful and watched her mother be murdered 2 days before her quince when she tried to stop men that broke into their house to steal her daughter. She worked for them for 15 years rising through the ranks being paid, trusted and treated like their queen. It was an amazing turn around after being poor to now having money, cars, a penthouse in Miami, everything she ever wanted. But she didn’t forget they killed her mother so she planned to be caught with 20 million dollars work of drugs on her so she could testify against them.
🧊Albanian cleaner who disposed of at least 24 victims (Santa Clause! Robert Clark). He says him and Eric were friends and that he was thankful that the program faked his death so no one could come after him.
🧊Plastic surgeon who helped disguise known felons (coroner and husband to the police chief, Hemingson). Just doesn’t want her to tell his wife.
🧊White supremicist who bombed a Black church in the Deep South before turning on his crew. (Glen Keely/Glenn Jennings) who was a Hell Rider and helped set the fire to the church in Mobile, Alabama. Of course he has a problem with the Chief of Police being Black (shocker) and says he saw Eric down at the beach talking with a Black man and implicated him in the murder. He can’t tell you who or what he looks like because the guy left (these fuckers are fast) and they all look the same. Where’s a hammer when you really need one, huh?

She eventually calls him back while her and her dog go to see Eric’s office where she finds a safe under the desk with almost all of the witness files in it, one is missing. All the remaining ones have all the pictures and current identities of every witness taken out so she calls the Witness Protection Bureau. The agent she speaks with there said Eric was desperately looking into the disappearance of 2 witnesses who may have gone missing (Marcus, a former employee at the hotel Alice is staying at “The Black Lion” and was stealing and David, his friend and the local drug dealer.) Someone called Eric the night he died with a burner phone. Now they’re calling Alice.
When she goes to see Ariana, she finds out that she was the only person that knew what Eric really did for a living. She was singing like a canary on their death bed. After she learns her backstory, Alice goes back to her hotel and figures out that the innkeeper also had a thing with Eric. They used to go to church until 6 months ago when he started fucking Ariana. Michell is also in the program but they don’t say why. The. Hank the bartender she was supposed to go see and speak with doesn’t show up for his shift and has disappeared. He was heard arguing loudly with someone the other day that wasn’t a local. The “killer” with the burner and the voice alterer calls her while Peeves barks and wants to know everything about her so they ask her questions…but only about herself. She realizes she knows them by the way they speak and they immediately hang up after telling her it’s a good thing she has the dog to tell her that someone was right outside the door. Now she knows the person calling is a man.
When Jim shows up to the town and meets her at the coroner office, they find out that there is a note in Eric’s throat that’s says Glenn Keely. In the car on the way to see this POS, her and Jim speak on the past. She wants to know if his wife knows that he’s working with her again or about the affair which he refuses to answer. He doesn’t believe her when she says he has a sudtle tell and she tests him to be sure. He’s of Asian descent (believe me this is relevant). Meeting Price was as vile as you think. He makes a show of knowing the best way to describe Asians comparing them to Oriental rugs. Charming. After suffering through that SOB talking about “woke” and PC and basically hating Blacks (fucker) she doesn’t want to follow up on his lead. Except Jim does (I wonder why). He also seems to know exactly how many Black witnesses are there in town (how interesting). She agrees to tomorrow and he takes her back to the hotel. A little while later he comes over with Thai while she’s in the shower. She tells him to go get drinks and they have a pow wow where she lures him into a false sense of security. He got sloppy. Basically he got to town before her, talked to the coroner, knows exactly how Black peoples are there because he took out pieces of the file AND took the one file missing. He caves ans she admits she was guessing. She thinks her father is the missing file and he’s here in town after they faked his death. They needed him alive to take down the cartel.
Jim tells her that she’s partially right. He was GOING to go into the program without her and her mom but he was killed by the cartel before the trial. He’s really been sent to protect the man who killed her farher. She throws his sorry ass out and is sure that he was going to throw this crime at the feet of a Black man to save his own ass and that of her fathers killer. The “killer” calls back and asks her why she’s upset. He thinks she loved Jim and he wants to help her somehow. Then he says a line that makes her ask him again to repeat it. He refuses and she says she will find him even if it takes the rest of her life. She says she’s quitting the bureau after this case going to Jim’s cabin to tell him she wants to see the files then she’s leaving. Only he comes out and tells her Santa was killed and his body dumped in front of Ariana’s flower shop with his lips sown shut and post mortem mutilation. They talk to Ariana and Alice knows she’s lying and knows everything but Jim is a pussy and wants to protect her instead. Meanwhile Reggie Harlow is caught at the border and they rush up there.
Jim is all types of bitch made when they get there. Calling Reggie all types of rats and POS like HE isn’t! And he knows he didn’t fucking do it but racist so…Eric asked Reggie to see if he could find out anything on the 2 missing witnesses to cover his ass for losing them. Reggie was about to run because Hank just went missing and he wants to stay alive white bitch boy here is entirely too salty for a lying ho. Santa was also poisoned with arsenic. Now she thinks that all of this is about the witnesses themselves, they aren’t random. She thinks there are bounties or hits out on these people and someone is killing for money. And they are collecting millions at this point. It’s storming and back at the hotel, her lights are the only ones to go out before she is shot 2x. Once in the shoulder and 1 in her vest. Had broken rib and is in the hospital. She’s sure it’s a woman because Peeves didn’t bark and it’s Ariana because she bragged too hard about being rich with the cartel after being poor for so long. She didn’t mean to get caught she just had to use it to her advantage until she could collect money and move it to the Cayman Islands for safe keeping. Santa was a boy toy with a hit out and she put him in front of her shop to throw off suspicion esp since she was a cartel member. Alice calls her mom then calls someone else asking for help. Out of the hospital she goes to see Ariana in custody and gives her some test before hobbling home. She has Jim find the burner phone that’s been calling her in the freezer inside a rotted fish. They are ready to convict and Alice true to her word retires.
Until Jim calls. He spins some story about Ariana hiring the best lawyer money can buy only to find she has no money in the Cayman. She’s been cleaned out. Then he goes on to try to mimic her telling her that it was clear that Alice set Ariana up to take the fall for everything and stole her monions. After he’s done with his stupid ass theory, she finally tells him how she knows when he’s a fucking liar. He says everything too carefully, too properly because he actually has to think before he says it. It’s not natural or convincing. He would rather paint a woman whose pussy he’s been in as a murderer than tell her the truth. He folds like a cheap IKEA table and asks her where her father is. She calls him a fucking coward for not just telling her Hank, the bartender that she was supposed to meet but he fled before she could was her father this whole time. When he asks again she says she doesn’t know and hangs up the phone. So where is Hank? Well with millions of dollars her, her mom and “Hank” can be literally anywhere. Anywhere at all.

Immersive, Captivating- listen with headphones!
Very well performed and produced- an engaging story from start to finish.
Be sure to listen to this with headphones, as the environmental directional audio production is phenomenal. I found myself jumping with a startle and looking behind me because of how precise the environmental audio effects were.

As a fan of Bones, it felt like I was back watching one of the épisodes.
The staging was so immersive it was awesome, it even creeped me out sometimes !

Production values are high: different readers used to represent the different characters, and an elaborate soundtrack. So you do feel you are “in” the story. Even so, the sounds that are added (doors opening and closing, dogs barking, thunderstorms, steps, shuffling paper, etc) are all pretty generic, and, other than these sounds and a bit of piano which is part of the story, the Script leaves out everything that isn’t dialogue. So you never get to read about what people think - you have to distill it from the dialogue. Same with moving from place to place. It is like a movie: first they are in one place, the the scene cuts and you go instantly from one place to another, but unlike a movie, you don’t see the change in scenery, instead you have to infer from the dialogue you are in a new place. And there is never any actual description of where the action is taking place (the appearance of the village, the landscape etc). If, like me, you like to read these stories, in large part, because you get to learn about and be in interesting places, then this story will leave you wanting because all you’ll know about the fictional “Jakob’s Point” is that it is in a peninsula located in the US but only accessible by going first into Canada. Would that be on the West Coast? Or the East Coast? or the Great Lakes? It it flat or hilly? Is it bare or heavily vegetated? Is it modern or old-fashioned in looks? We are not told and since nothing else is spelled out for the reader it could be just about anywhere between US and Canada that has water. We learn there are thunderstorms but we don’t know the season of the year either. For some readers none of this will matter so long as the story has an interesting plot with interesting people (and the plot here is pretty good) but in this case even the description of the characters (as it appears here and there in the dialogue) is very skimpy, so it is whatever your own mind conjures up. So, to conclude, think of this audible experience as being the equivalent of watching a TV show with the sound on but the picture turned off. If you find that pleasant, then you’ll like Audible’s “Jakop’s Point.”

this was so fun and twisty!
after absolutely loving game of nines, i knew i needed to go back and pick up another audible original thriller, and this one caught my eye. idk why, i always love witness protection stories.
i loved a lot of the same things about this one as i did for the other, the sound effects/audio production was great, plus i loved spotting famous actors' voices. Didn't realize Selenis Levya, the woman who plays Gloria on Orange is the New Black was here until i heard her voice!
this one definitely gripped me too. unlike game of nines, there was actually no "narration" or "exposition" so to speak. it was all dialogue. i thought this was interesting considering it was written by someone who usually writes for tv, not books. he found very inventive ways to tell us what alice was thinking without outright saying it, like voice recorded notes on interviews or conversations with her partner.
this was good as a mystery, but i don't really think it ever got me to care that deeply about alice's internal struggles, like the complicated psychological stuff with her father or her disillusionment with the bureau. that rupture point around the middle where she suddenly gets emotional, flying off the handle and making huge logical leaps about her father, it was so out of left field. both that she would even guess these things, and also that we as readers should care about her backstory.
maybe this could have been better developed with more time, but with less than two hours, i think it would have been better to keep everything contained to jakob's point. there were so many interesting dynamics going on in the town- everyone's double identities, the lying motel owner, the ambiguous motivations of the dead marshall, but in the end all of it is flattened because none of it actually mattered to the mystery, neither the reason nor the solving of it. plus, with so many characters and most having two names, i admit it was a bit hard to keep track of all of them, which is why frustrated me that it didn't even matter in the end.
but overall this was gripping and engaging, and i did not see many of the twists coming, so what more could i ask for? i would say i liked this a little less than game of nines but that's probably only because i read them so close together and they were very similar (both in format and actually some of the reveals, like the ). But I would definitely be open to reading more of these in the future!

This was a 3 star short story at best but the audio production was excellent so I gave it another star. I was out walking while listening and it sounded like the dogs barking in the audio were actually running up behind me. Really well done.
The story was a bit confusing. I have to say that some of the plot really just went over my head. Jakob's Point is a hotbed of people in witness protection. When the US Marshall assigned as their handler ends up murdered, FBI Agent Alice Wheaton is called in to investigate. She is soon joined by her former partner, in more ways then one, Jim. But he is there on other, secret orders. He had to get rid of all of the US Marchall's files to protect the identity of the witnesses but especially one in particular, Alice's father. He was caught up in drug smuggling and he turned on his gang and entered witness protection. When Alice figured it out, she confronted Jim who said that while it was true, the person he was protecting wasn't her father but rather his murderer. The case of the dead US Marshall was simply that of a witness gone bad who, after starting an affair with the Marshall to gain access to his files, was collecting the bounties from the drug gangs when she knocked other witnesses off. Somehow Alice set her up for conviction by planting evidence, even though she really was guilty, so that she could steal her bounty money, quit the FBI and find her father, who was not dead. A confusing ending.

Note to self: Don’t go for a walk alone in the woods on a stormy-skied afternoon, rain pelting down, while listening to a thriller with a killer on the loose.
The sky was heavy with rain, and the smell of wet earth rose from the path. The story unfolded in my ears through rich, immersive binaural audio — footsteps creeping from behind had me looking over my shoulder for the entire walk, a dog barking made me glance toward the perceived direction of the sound, and thunder rolled so convincingly I genuinely couldn’t tell if it was part of the story or the storm gathering overhead.
For me, it wasn’t just immersive; it was so realistic it completely disoriented my sense of space and presence.
The rain kept falling. The world around me and the one in my ears had merged — the line between fiction and reality blurred in the most uncanny way. What I expected to be a casual listen turned into a fully embodied, atmospheric experience.
Highly recommend listening to this one with headphones — and maybe somewhere a little eerie, if you’re feeling brave.

Jakob’s Point is a twisty, small‑town murder mystery that starts with a dead U.S. Marshall and quickly unravels into a web of secrets. The reveal that this “quiet” town is packed with people in witness protection gives the story a fresh, chaotic edge. Suddenly everyone has a motive, and no one is who they seem. The pacing stays tight, the tension builds cleanly, and the shifting suspicions kept me hooked the whole way through.
The audiobook is a standout. Emily Deschanel (yes, Bones herself) is one of the narrators, and she’s phenomenal. Her narration is grounded, expressive, and such a natural fit for this kind of mystery. I genuinely hope she narrates more.

A great short full cast audiobook! Alice Wheaton is a FBI special agent specializing in forensic listening, that us to say she can tell who is lying. When a murder occurs in a town known by the FBI as the location of Witness protection clients, the person who knew all the identities of said clients, it is important to find who murdered this man and where are the files holding the identities and their secrets. Alice has a dog named Peeve who barks in the presence of men. Alice's own father has been killed. It's a good short read with twists until the last line! It was interesting learning on how yo discern lies in speech!

This was a very quick short story. Emily Deschanel play the lead character. She basically is trying to solve the murder or death of an agent who is in charge of witness protection basically a bunch of witness protection clients all live in the same city not sure if they’re aware majority of them are all in witness protection, which right off the bat sounds like a bad idea. I do have to say the whole time she’s reading. All I picture is temperance Brennan. Overall, it’s not a bad story, but it is very very short. Everything is crammed in like an hour and a half if it was a longer story I feel like it would be better.
