i hadnt read a Ugandan work, and much less a first novel, that kept me on the edge of my seat-literally, in the past several years.
a young profession being the sole cleansing agent for an age-old curse on his land, in this day and age, sounds far-fetched. But Alele makes the story sound fresh and recent, and yet again like an ancient fire-side tale of african adventure.
It's an excellent piece of work and i recommend it to anyone. The Africanness of the characters, their fears and confronting their worst nightmares in an epic battle between good and evil. the adventure is superb and the book gets very hard to put down once the journey to the Twoni hills begin.
You will learn about the hidden terror the fireside tales and African folklore can stirr from within. And you laugh and cry at the loves and heartbreaks that come along the journeys to the ultimate confrontation between good and evil.
