If there's one thing everyone in the Yeavering knows, it's that a Barghest, a mythical wolf shifter, in possession of the ability to harvest souls, must be in want of a wife...
In the Yeavering, humans are two things, food or servants. I never wanted to be either, but when you lose the lottery which allows the Faerie to harvest humans for their own ends, serving them is better than being served up to them.
Which is how I meet Reavely. An outcast from all corners of the Yeavering because he helps the Reaper harvest souls, somehow he’s ended up in the dungeons of my Faerie lord, and I’m expected to clean up around him.
And when he growls mine, I did not expect he’d be able to escape…or take me with him.
Reavely is feral, lonely and dangerous. But his act in stealing me away has put into motion a chain of events neither of us can stop. He has to marry me to break his curse, or he’ll be left howling at the moon forever.
But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in the Yeavering, it’s to never trust anything, especially your heart.
Wynter belongs to me, and I WILL DESTROY THE YEAVERING TO KEEP HER SOUL FOR MYSELF.

The Howling is the second book in the Monsters of the Yeavering series by USA TODAY Bestselling Author Hattie Jacks. Featuring a wolf shifter, the Barghest, a mythical creature from old English legends and a human female with all the monstrous spice you've been hunting for!
So many inconsistencies in the story and plot. And my very petty gripe is that the names of places, species and characters were all to similar and it made it so confusing to track what or who they were talking about. Seriously MMC was Reavely, Reivers were a demon minion, Reaper was a character, and the world the live was called the Yeavering. That was just one instance and there were others!
I LOVE how this series is going. It’s cozy with the perfect amount of heroism and good triumphing evil. Want a spicy feisty yet cozy read with banter and a magical storyline? This is it, I couldn’t ask for more!
This is book two in the series Monsters of the Yeavering (based on myths & legends of England) so far they do seem like you could read as standalone if needed however characters are overlapping hard so best enjoyed in order.
Reaverly our MMC (based on the legends of the great black dog of the moors, a harbinger of death) is such a fun character. Is he feral? Absolutely, but he’s absolutely unhinged about our FMC and I loveeeee it. Wynter is our FMC, she’s sassy and so lovable. And their relationship? 🥵🥵🥵🥵
🐾💀🥮❤️🔥🥮💀🐾 M/F Interconnected standalones (recommend reading them in order for full clarity but each book is a different couple) Myths & legends of England Shifter x Human 🐺 “Mine” A whole lot of eating 🌶️ Spicyyy 3.5/5 - I’d say very story based but that spice is spicy!
3.5 I liked the whole feral boi thing, but there were a few weird plot things that happened. Like the MMC going from not understanding why he wanted to use his peen the way it was meant to be used to “oh, everyone in my pack would mate in public”. Just threw me off. The ended was sweet and I did like both MCs
Spice: 3/5

A cursed king. A stolen human. A love that changes the fate of a realm.
Wynter never chose the Faerie realm of Yeavering. She’s traded into servitude, her life no longer her own, until a risky escape from the dungeons throws her straight into the path of Reavely, the last Barghest. He’s feared, cursed, and nothing like the salvation she thought she wanted. But somehow, he’s the one she can’t walk away from.
Out in the shadowed wilds beyond the veil, survival’s as fragile as trust. Enemies are hunting, ancient power’s waking, and a bond neither of them expected starts to take root. Wynter’s resilience grows, Reavely’s loyalty burns fierce, and the line between captivity and devotion starts to blur.
But in Yeavering, love comes at a cost. The curse runs deep, and the fight for freedom’s going to demand everything they’re willing to give. Some bonds are worth breaking kingdoms for.
Wynter grows from a powerless human servant into someone who takes charge of her fate, while Reavely transforms from a cursed predator into a leader who values love and connection. Their allies adapt to a realm free of its old curse, but the heart of the story’s in the way Wynter and Reavely’s bond shifts from fear and distrust to deep loyalty and love, forged in danger, sacrifice, and unshakable trust.
A cursed Barghest and a fearless human prove love can break the darkest magic and change the fate of a realm forever. A steamy, enemies to lovers, fated mates, werehound shifter, monster romance, exploring love, loyalty, sacrifice, freedom, power, fate, and redemption.
🐺 soul eater wants to eat her 😺 A mythical wolf shifter, who can eat souls bc he belongs to the reaper, is on a mission to find out who ordered the death of his pack. But he finds his mate along the way, will do anything to make her his, and protect her from all comers. Even if he has to tear the Yeavering apart to do it.
Tropes: *Virgin 🐺 MMC w/two forms *Human slave FMC due to a lottery *Fated mates *Magic *Heat *Knotting *Breeding *Pregnancy *Spicy(he tears it up🪢🤣🙌) *Mine mine mine *Burn the 🌎 for her *Ghostly pack members *Evil faery overlords *Hilarious culture clashes *HEA for couple *TW for attempted SA but it dsnt actually happen.
🚨Want to see some of my fav parts from the book? (I picked lines that wouldn't spoil anything but spoiler alert just in case lol)
___________Begin 📖 quotes__________ 🐺 I have never wanted anything other than food and souls. Any other choice was denied. But I want her. I want the human with the blue hair and blue dress. I want to make her mine, give her everything I have. I want to burn for her. I want to defy the Reaper for her. This little female is my mate. Somehow the Yeavering found me and gave her to me. I look into the empty space where she was. I am not giving her back.
🐺“One of these days, these will be full of milk for me,” he murmurs. “For you?” “For me, my little breeder. My pups can’t have all the enjoyment.”
🐺I dislike the way she does not stirr. I get closer and stare at her some more. I think she breathes. I put a paw on the bed. Wynter makes a snuffling sound, and I remove my paw. But it is my bed and she is my female. I should put my paw on the bed. I put my paw on the bed. Again. This time she doesn’t make a noise, so I put my other paw on the bed, then I move forward until my stomach is on the bed too. I am on the bed. I am next to her.
🐺 “Of course,” I say. “It is always the female’s choice as to whom she mates. If you have other suitors, I will gladly rip them limb from limb in a contest to the death.” Wynter gasps. I’m relatively certain Bessie chokes back a laugh. Meddling witch. “I don’t have any other suitors,” Wynter chokes out, “but even if I did, I would not want anyone to be killed.” “Then how does a human mate prove himself to his female?” I query. “Without bloodshed?”
💃Fenrother looks at me, and despite Reavely growling, lifting him higher and pushing his claws further into his neck, he lifts a hand where he has a steak speared on a single claw and puts it in his mouth, chewing thoughtfully. “Don’t…eat…at my mate,” Reavely says through enormous fangs. ___________End📖 quotes_____________
This was such a cute & uplifting book with just a touch of darkness. I loved the first book in the series a tad more (it had a quicker pace, made me laugh more, and little easier to read) so I gave this one 4.5 stars lol. If I had to compare this book to one I've read before I'd say Ursa Dax Alien Cowboy mail order Bride series. It's got that whole "scary virgin beast who will do anything for his bride" vibe.
Life's short read whatever you want! Then tell me about it lol.
🖤 “My Wynter, my little deer, I am yours until the end of time.” ~~~ Wynter is so awesome! She’s strong, resilient and so fierce. I loved her courage and that she never hesitated to stand her ground no matter what creature in the Yeavering she was facing. Even more, she’s caring, compassionate and understanding. Wynter is an amazing woman and I loved her so, so much!
Reavely is a wolf shifter, the last of his kind, who harvests souls for the Reaper himself. Reavely is dangerous, deadly, powerful, bossy and almost feral. He’s a cursed outcast feared by all in the Yeavering. But there’s another side of him, too. Because underneath his snarly facade, this Barghest is considerate, caring and fiercely protective. And he might not be just the black dog of death everyone thinks he is. Reavely is an incredible male and I couldn’t help but adore every single thing about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Wynter and Reavely! Wynter is serving one of the Faerie lords and deep in his dungeons she meets Reavely. And the moment the wolf shifter scents the fierce human, she knows she’s his. And when he escapes, he’s taking Wynter with him. I adored those two together! Their chemistry was fantastic from the very beginning and I loved every moment they spent together - whether they were bickering, teasing or discovering more and more about each other. Wynter is hard to trust any creature in the Yeavering, but Reavely is not someone who’d easily back down from challenges. And he’s willing to defy even the Reaper to protect her (totally swooning here!). Even more, the more time they spent together, the more the need for one another couldn’t be denied. And when they finally surrendered to the undeniable desire, the passionate moments they shared were so hot and I couldn’t get enough of all the naughty, bitey and knotty delight. But, escaping the Faerie lord’s dungeon also unleashes a chain of events that will completely change everything in the realm. Nevertheless, Wynter and Reavely’s bond is strong enough to overcome all. They were absolutely perfect for each other and more than deserved to find happiness and love together!
In addition, the storyline was phenomenal! With all the danger, suspense and unexpected turns of events, I was glued to the pages till the very end. And, with a meddling ghost family, mischievous tricksters and slightly unhinged assassins added to the mix, you’re in for a wild ride. The Yeavering is definitely changing and I cannot wait to see what will become of it!
Overall, The Howling is another remarkable addition to the series! The story is filled with action, danger, suspense, drama, twists, smoking-hot passion and fantastic characters.
I couldn’t put it down and absolutely loved every single page of it!
A monster romance that is tender, emotional, and engaging. Reavely and Wynter's journey through growth, connection, and past pains creates a warm-hearted story that kept me turning the pages. The immersive world-building picks up right where book one left off, deepening a universe that’s impossible to forget—and even harder to leave, I'm already excited for book three.
The Barghest, Reavely, isn't your typical monster. He's fierce and full of raw energy but underneath his growls is a male yearning for connection. His internal battle between instincts and feelings makes him a fascinating, layered character.
Wynter isn't just some helpless captive or clueless partner. She's determined and smart while also carrying her own emotional scars. Watching her find strength, her place in the unfamiliar world of the Yeavering, and choosing love on her terms is incredibly fulfilling. Her inner fire matches perfectly with that of the Barghest.
Their relationship grows slowly through mutual respect and carefully gained closeness. The tension and passion between them leads to unwavering dedication. The payoff in their affection is huge; it feels well-deserved and truly touching. Both MCs come with their flaws, but together they find healing as they learn to love each other.
When I say this book had me gob smacked!! I love a good wolf shifter but this really took that and ramped it up fifty times giving us Reavely The Barghest aka the black dog of death. You know that saying ' I could fix it' yeah.... Well I could totally fix it. You meet Wynter a human thrust into the Yeavering by the lottery. She tries to escape her captor Lord Guyzance only to be caught and thrown into the dungeon as punishment. Once down there our Barghest finds he wants her and she is his true mate. He scares her not meaning too. Lord Guyzance wants Reavely to bend to his will and control him for power and finds his weakness using it against him by trying to assault Wynter. Of course Reaverly goes crazy and does the ultimate disrespect by ripping Lord Guyzances wings off. They escape the castle and Reaverly takes her with him escaping to his castle. That's where you find out Reaverly is actually a king to a castle haunted by his dead family. When I say I ate this book up whole. I read it in one day just all out. Absolutely loooooved its my favorite in the series so far. The banter between Reavely and Wynter was adorable. Everything we have come to love from Hattie Jacks. Truly a masterpiece.
The Howling is Book 2 in the Monsters of the Yeavering series, and just like Book 1, it delivers on all the things I love most in a monster romance, a possessive (but loveable) himbo MMC, intense chemistry, and a feral-level devotion to the FMC.
This instalment follows Reavely, our not-so-bright but fiercely protective monster, as he escapes the dungeon alongside human FMC Wynter. Almost immediately, he decides they’re mates (obviously) and the rest of the story is him doing everything in his slightly unhinged, slightly clueless power to win her over. And honestly? It’s adorable, spicy, and chaotic in the best way.
The spice is hot, with lots of claiming, possessiveness, and yes, more than a few growled "mine" moments. But what surprised me most was the depth of the found-family dynamic in this book. There's heart here, and even amid the primal tension and monster smut, you get moments of softness, humour, and connection that round the story out beautifully. And yes, we do get our well-earned HEA.
If you loved Book 1, The Howling absolutely delivers more of the monster mayhem, himbo charm, and addictive romance this series is becoming known for. I received an ARC for my honest thoughts of the Howling.
“The Howling” by Hattie Jacks is the second book in the “Monsters of the Yeavering” series, and I am loving these spicy paranormal fantasy monster romances. Wynter is a human trapped behind the veil as a slave for Faerie, but she refuses to stop trying to escape and resist. Reavely is a giant wolf shifter and soul reaper (Barghest) just existing until he catches a whiff of his mate’s scent, then decides to keep Wynter's mind, body, and soul. “I WILL DESTROY THE YEAVERING TO KEEP HER SOUL FOR MYSELF.” Reavely is so overwhelmed with excitement upon meeting Wynter that he makes a terrible first (second and third) impression. I loved the buildup of tension and emotional growth throughout the book, and I especially enjoyed the spice and banter. Reavely is a protective, possessive, secret cinnamon roll who absolutely adores his fated mate, even if he's super confused and insecure. Wynter is a delightfully complex and interesting female lead who loves her found family fiercely and deserves a happily-ever-after. I hope you love this book as much as I did!
He is the Barghest. He can shapeshift into a huge shaggy dog. She is human and was forced to be a servant in Faerie. He smelled her and knew immediately she was his mate. So he got himself thrown in prison to find her.
He is happy to meet her. She just wants to get away from the bad guys. He shows her he cares about her. He helps her when she is injured. He takes her to the local dressmaker to get clothes.
I enjoyed their romance. He likes to tell her he will get her pregnant with his pups and he will keep her round as often as he can. She likes when he talks dirty to her.
I took off 1 star because there was a subplot involving his family's curse and some ghosts and it made me really sad. I cried buckets when the hero's mother did what she did to help them.
The hero has a knot "down there" and he is new to mating but he likes making her orgasm. I liked all of the steamy scenes.
This book reads fine as a stand alone. But the couple from book 1 has a few appearances.
I received an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book as an arc read for my honest opinion. Thank you!
4.75⭐ out of 5 ⭐
I love love LOVED The Longing so I was worried that this book would be hard to love because the first one was so high for me. I am happy to report I was wrong. I loved this book just as much as I did The Longing. I was so excited to read about our harbinger of death.
Reaverly is a delicious MMC with just the right amount of unhinged. He is absolutely obsessed with Wynter and honestly, if a man isn't feral for me, I don't want him! I love Wynter and her personality. She had a really good balance and she complimented Reavelry's personally. The banter was amazing. The spice was spicing. The vibes were immaculate. The adventure was exciting and I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. I just love their relationship so much 🥹🥹🥹 I felt so happy while reading it. It was like a hot cup of coffee on a cold day type of feeling.
I absolutely loved it. I can't wait to read it again and again!
He said the wrong thing, She thinks he wants to kill her. Will they see eye to eye
So the howling. Picks up from the little prelude we had from the Longing. Reavely find himself. again, in the lords prison cells.
Wynter the sweet slave human tried escaping the lord and ends up being sent to clean and maintain the prisons as punishment. But she is very Naïve and pigheaded.
I’m also loving Hedley Kow, she is the comedic relief we needed.
And they are all lovely together.
it was great to also see Linton again he is always such a little bundle of moth mystery.
We also got to see Fentranton and Alice again and that was awesome. I loved their story in the Longing and was happy to see that they had Revel’s back when he and Wynter needed it most!
Key point in no particular order: - human sl@ve - kidnapping - attempted drugging - Attempted SA - fated mates - Br3-3ding - pregnancy - secrets - found family - breaking curses - HEA - Barghast shifter (werewolf like) - dragon(Wyrm) shifter aka Fenranton - Mothman aka Linton
I will ride for Fenrother, and I’ll 💀 for Reavely! From the moment I read about him, I knew I’d fall in love with him. He’s a character and had me rolling lol. He’s only loyal to Wynter and a very small group of people. Wynter desires freedom, and she achieves it in the most unexpected way. She was kidnapped… So not only was she forced to become a slave under Lord Guyzance, but she now leaves one lordship for another. To add insult to injury, Reavely claims her as his mate. The harbinger of death has a mate… what could possibly go wrong? 😂
This was so funny and I really do love this series. The side characters were funny and really kept things interesting. Also, the name for the male anatomy in this series is starting to grow on me.😂 It the highlight of the book for me. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with for the next book.
This is a standalone story with characters from the previous book mentioned. POV of Wynter and Reavely. I loved their first encounter. Communication or should I say miscommunication was fun to read. Loved the humor, suspense and steam to the romance. I also thought the flow of the story was good. This is in British English so if you are not used to reading this form some of the saying may seem different and some spellings. I liked Lilburn. She brings a spark and mischief to the story. We also are reacquainted with Alice and Fenrother from the first book- The Longing. Loved how the reaper plays a part in his future and his families existence. Of course the perfect HEA for Wynter and Reavely . I received a free copy of this book via Bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Howling sweeps you back into the dangerous, magical world of the Yeavering with a pairing that’s as mismatched as it is magnetic. Wynter, a human forced into Faerie servitude, meets Reavely, the last Barghest, cursed, feared, and utterly convinced she’s his mate. Their escape from the dungeon sets off a chain of events that’s equal parts peril, banter, and unexpected tenderness.
What I liked most was the balance, how Reavely’s fierce, almost unhinged protectiveness plays beautifully against Wynter’s stubborn will and quick wit. The romance builds on tension and mutual defiance. A great follow-up to The Longing, with just enough danger, mischief, and romance to keep me hooked from start to finish.
Thank you to the author for an advance copy of this book
These monsters sure do love their pizzles, pricks, and piss—and honestly, it’s part of their charm. Hattie Jacks is great at blending feral chaos with tender moments, and this has plenty of both. It’s fast-paced, steamy, and full great side characters.
That said, I didn’t love it as much as the first book. The emotional stakes felt a bit rushed, and while Reavely is a nice cinnamon roll MMC, I didn’t fall for him the way I did for Fenrother. Maybe it’s because he kept too many secrets.
Wynter, on the other hand, is a strong character. Though I kept wondering… how was her hair still purple after months in the Yeavering? Is there a secret Faerie salon we don’t know about? So yes, the story itself is great, but a few lingering questions and an ending with an unexpected villain pulled me out just enough to keep this from being a five-star read.
If you love fated mates, monster spice, and a heroine who learns to stand up for herself, this one’s for you.
Thank you to the author and BookFunnel for this eARC.
The Yeaverling with all of its mythical and magical creatures is a wonderful setting for this story to unfold. Reaverly as the Barghest closely tied to the Reaper is a formidable character. He is unpredictable, impulsive and haunted by the curse affecting his pack. Wynter is thrust into this world and has to figure out how to survive. As with any insta-attraction, this pair navigates several dire situations while sorting out this relationship. I think what appealed to me the most was the selfless caring for another while embracing the inner beauty and connection that true love embodies. Great dialogue, magical creatures and lots of action kept the story moving. Loved it!
I received an ARC and am voluntarily sharing my honest review.
LOVES: - The fact these characters are based on lore is so neat. I loved reading the author’s note and getting explanations of her experiences. - So many great side characters! The Duegar are back, those sweet little creatures, plus the sprite, the ghosts, the witch, and the other humans and monsters. Nice to see Alice and Fenrother from book 1 again too! - Poor Reaverly, being forced to do things he doesn’t want to, seeing his family murdered and living with the reminder of that 💔 - The “bad dog” got me 😂 - I’m definitely looking forward to the mystery of Linton being revealed in the next book 👀
So fun to see more from this world that Hattie has created!
Thanks to the author for the advance copy 💝 Releases on August 7th!
This was a fab follow up to book one and can be read as a stand-alone. I found this such an engaging read and got a kick out of Reaverly and Wynter's path to a hot HEA. When they both find themselves in a dungeon, his primal reaction to her has them escaping and on the run to his castle. Of course, she's no damsel; she's feisty, stubborn and has a quick wit. I giggled away at their banter. I also got a kick out of how, basically, unhinged Reaverly was. Expect to get caught up in the action, drama, danger, twists, humour, heart and heat as they work their way to a wonderful HEA. Good fun!
The first book in the series was a great escape, and this one continued that trend! Wynter was resilient and straightforward. She wasn't afraid to put Reavely in his place, company be damned. Reavely was facing an impossible task and decided to switch it up a bit by claiming Wynter in a mate bond instead of giving her soul to his Reaper boss. It definitely helped that he was ready to defend her to his dying breath and give her everything she ever wanted at first sight. Their love was found at the end of a bumpy road, but I so enjoyed the journey! These two come together like fire and ice, which causes quite a few steamy and spicy moments!
I so enjoyed this book, more so than the previous one. Reavely and Wynter put so much faith into one another it's endearing. This slow burn love story is humbling. There are a few quirky characters that add additional depth to this amazing story. Emotions run high when unexpected family make an unforeseen appearance. Which in all honesty is a bonus.
Tension runs high when trust and truth are put to the test. All in all this is an an amazing story with exceptional characters. It's nice that Alice and Fenrother put in an appearance too
I love everything by Hattie Jacks She is an amazing example of how you can wave a fantasy world and make the reader believe Wynter and Reavely road to their HEA is what makes this story a page turner with twists and turns you didn’t expect The supporting characters are excellent some we met in Book One I don’t have to tell you to get your copy Now, if you don’t you will be missing out on another great Hattie Jacks story Can’t wait to read Kaitlyn and Linton story next Great job as always Hattie
This story was a perfect blend of action, romance and happy endings! I loved when evil dudes and “dudettes” get what is coming for them and I especially love when good characters get a “happily ever after”! Wynter was so feisty and a perfect match for the growly and “beastly” Reavley. I loved that his story was not straight forward and that, at the end, he had such a wonderful happy ending. I am enjoying these stories and love when characters from previous books show up - Alice and Fenrother are living their best life! I happily and voluntarily reviewed this story.
If you enjoyed the first book you will absolutely love this one, although you could read this as a standalone.
The Yeavering is an exciting yet terrifying place and this couple navigates their love through many trials. You see some of your favorites from the first book and explore more about how the Yeavering works. Lovely amount of spice, touch her and d!e, obsessive broody MMC, human FMC, fated mates, all the good stuff!
Sweet, untamed and hilarious After Longing, I knew the Howling would be incredible but Ms Jacks raised the ban higher!
A perfect blend of romance, lore and the most delicious humor . A overarching plot rich and imaginative. A feral Barghest,a human female enslaved by the evil fairies,a mishevious sprite and Weaverly's ghost family. The spice is hot as hell,Weaverly may be virgin but does he learn fast!!! And the author left hints about who's the next couple...
I was so excited that Reavely’s story was next and it didn’t disappoint. Reavely’s transformation from feral to a semi-functional being was great to see, as well as his love for Wynter. And I love that he’s never really fully tamed. They made a great couple. As did Fenrother and Alice. I love seeing the monsters having a story, when you usually see the “beautiful faerie”get a story. I can’t wait for the next monster book with Linton.
The path to happiness is paved with a lot of bumps in the second book. The Barghest lets himself get captured, again. Only now there is this sweet smell that disrupts all his plans. When, after a time, he senses her great duress, nothing stops him from rescuing her, the sweet human female who doesn't fear him and his growly disposition. Once freed they will get their happily ever after, right?
The Howling was just as bad as the first book, and instead of saying "pizzle" over and over like the The Longing, the repeating theme is "pissing on the floor" repeatedly in this one. I get that the MMC is dog related, but really???
This book was a gift, so I wanted to at least attempt to read it. DNF, and the writing was suspicious with how many mistakes and weird contradictions there are too. The flow and word choices are also stilted and odd.
