Shadows of Innocence: A Story of Selfless Love

Rate this book
Four hearts entangled by corruption and blood…

Two decades after her family’s legacy was stolen, Kiran Tariq is still fighting to restore the multi-million dollar empire left in her baby brother’s name. Unaware of his worth, Osman is in his final year of high school — and he’s falling in love.

Sanam Uzair has never wanted for anything — except her parents’ love. When she’s partnered with Osman in Biology, Sanam is drawn to his kindness. But their hearts soon become pawns in a ruthless political play to conceal a decades-old crime.

Fellow student Zain Ghazanfar’s life has been mapped out for him by his billionaire father. But Zain’s attempts at rebellion backfire when they lead him to the mistake of following his heart…

Tested by betrayal, the four must make their own impossible love or their own survival, commitment or convenience, pursuit of justice or acceptance of the status quo, revenge or the voice of their conscience.

Set across Pakistan and the United States, Shadows of Innocence is a tale of a sister’s unyielding strength, a cousin ensnared by his father’s global ambitions, and a couple whose destinies are painfully entwined.

Malika is a pediatrician by training. Born in Pakistan, she moved to the United States for her medical residency. The life of an immigrant physician—with a slight accent and a Brown identity—suspended between her birth country and her adopted one, has deeply influenced her writing.

When she’s not treating patients or dreaming up new stories, she’s probably chasing after her kids, watching crime dramas, or sipping real South Asian chai (not to be confused with the impostor known as a chai latte).

Just finished this and wow. I needed a day to process my thoughts.

This is a story of love, but it's not quite simple. It's on an epic scale because it's layered and presents itself in all different forms. But it's also a story of hate, deceit, betrayal, and greed. AND it's also a story of strength, reliance, healing, and forgiveness. It's complex and yet so beautiful. I was glued to this book until I finished it!

It's multi-POV, which gives the story several dimensions, but there are a TON of characters and names sprinkled throughout the book, each playing a crucial part in the story. I found myself confused a few times, but fortunately, the author skillfully makes the scene so that we remember who's who! So if you ever see a name and think, "Wait!!! Who was this again?" Don't worry! Continue reading and you'll be right back on track!

While reading, I can already imagine the ladies going crazy over Osman. I mean, the guy's the greenest green flag ever! The trust between him and Sanam is everything! Plus points for emphasizing respect and consent in a desi setup. Their love is, like, perfection.

"With rights come responsibilities, Sanam. And your comfort and consent will always be my responsibility."

The villain, or rather the main one, is absolutely crazy! The author went all out to make him the craziest, haha. The guy is involved in EVERY crime imaginable!

It is Zain and Kiran, however, who are my favorites. Let's start with Kiran. She's the woman I want to be when I grow up! She's such a strong, dignified character. The way she puts her family first is so impressive. There's a fight in her that keeps her going despite their circumstances. I'm so delighted that she got the happy ending she deserved in the end!

"For life, in all of its imperfectly glorious beauty, is worth living—and no matter the depths of the darkness, if light is in your kismet, light shall shine one day."

But Zain. Oh, I love this character! I'm not a writer, but I have this feeling that it may be easier to write a good-guy-and-his-selfless-forever-faithful-love character. But it's the complex characters like Zain that make me truly appreciate a writer's talent more. Malika D. created Zain with so many layers! Even though he was morally gray and did bad things, I couldn't help but root for him! His internal conflict between right and wrong, love and hate, his insecurities and anger were just so perfectly written! It was his POV that I loved the most. I'm so happy that we get a book for his story!

"Part of me was still in love with a woman I could no longer have. Love is maddening, irrational, and selfish all at the same time. I know, because I burned everything down around me when I couldn't get her."

Overall, this is such a well-executed story. There's romance, family drama, politics, crime, medicine, and law! It's set in Karachi, Houston, and Boston, and involves prominent, powerful people and their lives and the repercussions of their actions. There's a tiny bit of spice, but all scenes are fade-to-black. Also, the way each chapter ends in a cliff-hanger is brilliant because you can't just put the book down! And now I'm already excited for the sequel!

Definitely recommend if you're into complex family stories with romance mixed in. Just be prepared for some heavy themes.

Huge thanks to Malika D. and Epica Book PR for sharing the e-ARC with me! This review is my honest take, written straight from my book-loving soul.

A deeply emotional and intricately layered story that explores love, loss, and redemption across generations. The author weaves a poignant narrative that intertwines the lives of four characters namely - Kiran, Osman, Sanam, and Zain, each burdened by secrets, family legacies, and impossible choices. Set between Pakistan and the United States, the novel delves into the cost of power and the courage it takes to choose love and justice in a corrupt world.
The story’s strength lies in its emotional honesty and strong character development. Kiran’s fierce resilience, Osman and Sanam’s tender yet steadfast romance, and Zain’s journey from rebellion to redemption make this book unforgettable. Every twist feels earned, every heartbreak real. Malika’s writing is raw and cinematic, filled with moments that will make you cry, heal, and reflect on the complexities of love and morality.

This book completely stole my heart 💔 It’s powerful, emotional, and shows how love survives even in the hardest times. I started it with zero expectations and it ended up touching my soul.

Osman, Sanam, Kiran, Junaid, Ameerah, Zain… every single one felt so real. The way everything connected slowly was just beautiful. Every twist made sense and I couldn’t stop reading 🥺

It has everything: family drama, childhood trauma, betrayals, strong women, and that kind of love that refuses to break even when everything falls apart. The emotions were intense, the writing so beautiful, and the story flowed perfectly.

I loved how the author showed the changing relationships. Some moments made me angry, some broke me, and some healed me. Osman and Sanam’s love was slow, quiet, and deep, the kind that stays with you 💞

Kiran’s strength really stood out for me. Her courage and fight for her family were inspiring. Zain’s redemption was everything. Even the villain made me feel something, that’s how powerful the writing was.

The book talks about love, power, and greed with so much care. Every woman had her own battle and that made it even more special 🌸

This story broke me and healed me at the same time. It’s not just about love, it’s about family, loss, and finding light again. Malika’s writing is raw, emotional, and straight from the heart.

I laughed, I cried, and I didn’t want it to end 😭 One of the best reading experiences I’ve had in a long time. If you love emotional stories filled with love, betrayal, and redemption, this one’s for you 💖

⭐ 5/5 unforgettable.

Strong Female characters were the highlight of this book and they are inspiring. I did enjoy reading about each and every character - Positive and Negative both.
Each topic in this book was written with full awareness that one can empathize with the characters.

Easily one of the best books I've read this year!

This novel is a sweeping, emotionally charged journey that cuts straight to the bone 💔Tears were shed. Spanning through Pakistan, Houston and Boston 🌍, it follows Kiran, Osman, Sanam, and Zain, four unforgettable characters whose lives collide with devastating impact. What starts as a simple love story quickly transforms into a powerful exploration of family legacies, corruption, sacrifice, and the brutal cost of choosing integrity in a world built on greed and unspoken rules 🔥

Malika’s writing is raw, intimate, and unflinchingly honest.. the kind that doesn’t just stir emotion but drags it to the surface whether you’re ready or not. Kiran’s quiet strength and resilience moved me deeply 🌸 she carries her world with a kind of grace that’s rare in fiction. Osman and Sanam’s relationship is one of the most grounded, tender portrayals of partnership I’ve read in years 💞 And Zain… Zain is the sort of morally gray character who reminds you why complex storytelling matters.. flawed, furious, vulnerable and impossible to forget 🖤

The novel doesn’t shy away from the heavy things: family trauma, political corruption, crime, privilege, betrayal and the emotional wreckage left behind 💔 It exposes the ugliness of power and the fragility of relationships shaped by secrets and generational wounds. Yet, woven through the darkness, there are moments of healing, mercy and hope that feel earned.. not offered cheaply ✨

The multi-POV structure adds richness and dimension and even with a large cast, every character has weight. Their lives intersect with a precision that feels almost orchestral. And let me be honest: these chapter-end cliff-hangers? I thought I had outgrown compulsive late-night reading…but apparently not 😅 Even the villain is so sharply drawn that they linger in your mind long after the final page.

Despite the heaviness: betrayal, grief, injustice, emotional trauma, the story pulses with resilience and a love that refuses to collapse even under immense pressure ❤️‍🩹. The writing is cinematic, the twists hit hard and the emotional beats land with the kind of force that stays with you for days.

A fiercely written, heart-wrenching, and beautifully hopeful novel. It’s the kind of story that doesn’t just entertain, it challenges you, breaks you open and then slowly puts you back together again 💖 For readers who crave depth, complexity, and emotionally charged narratives that linger long after you close the book, this is an absolute must-read. Prepare yourself: it’s a ride you won’t forget 🔥

This masterpiece of a book destroyed me in the best way possible, with so many shocking plot twists, heart wrenching break ups and even that killer ending, I was crying through most of it. This book follows the story of 4 very different people, Zain the son of a manipulative billionaire CEO, Sanam the neglected child of a rich family, Osman an orphan who doesn’t know who he truly is and his older sister Kiran who is struggling with the weight of the family. All of them walk different paths and have different stories but are all interconnected to one man: Zain’s father. Osman and Sanam’s story is about two teenagers who were hopelessly in love that were separated by the trials of life. I’m not always for star crossed lovers but this was written in a way that touched my heart and soul. My standards are already sky high but Osman has raised them even higher, the devotion this man had is insane. Their love is so beautiful, and it’s also a story of growth and change and how love can persevere through it. Their selfless love being tested time and time again had me screaming and bawling and crying, I was such a mess. Kiran had an incredible story of growth, how someone so serious needed someone funny, caring and sweet to break down her walls. She had a lot of pressure and her trauma heavily weighed her down, her part of this book was beautiful and inspiring. Zain had the saddest story, his story was honestly really sad, and he’s painted as somewhat of a “villain” for half the book, but it shows the effects of childhood trauma and manipulative parents, and he was so brave to overcome that. Out of all of them I think he had the most character development and I love that about him. I really hope his story is not over. These four characters tell a phenomenal story and I fell in love with everything about this book. It has been a really long time since I read a book with so many POVs and main characters, it was longer than my regular reads but the time and pages flew by, and I had the time of my life (meaning I mostly cried) reading this book. This book legit altered my brain chemistry and I give it a 5/5

This is a story of love, revenge, and fate. Two families. Two cousins. Osman and Zain. Diametrically opposites. How when faced with betrayal, one chooses a path of self-destruction, the other unconditional love.

With 3 parallel stories going on, I was hooked from page 1.

Osman & Sanam - highschool sweethearts who were too shy to confess their love.
Zain & Maham - in love and were about to get engaged, until Maham, tired of Zain’s possessiveness n shady Dad, leaves him with Osman’s help. This is where the story takes a turn.
Kiran & Junaid - the divorced, independent, protective, fierce sister, and a charming police officer.

Zain, feeling betrayed and pushed by his father, takes revenge and forcefully marries Sanam. What happens next is intense. Will Sanam and Osman’s love survive the test of time and distance? What will happen to Zain?

This book has everything. Love, betrayal, politics, heartbreak, family drama. The plot is so layered, so masterfully written that every character stands out, leaving a mark. Osman - quiet loyal lover. Sanam - madly in love with Osman, but caught in the revenge crossfire. Zain - my favourite. Layered with shades of grey, sometimes I hated him, sometimes I wanted to hug him. Brutally manipulated by his own father, my heart broke for him. He’s flawed and wounded. His mistakes are infuriating, but his redemption, so rewarding. Ameerah - a woman with a saviour complex, she’s adorable. And there’s Kiran and Junaid - OMG. Kiran, a woman of steel who fought for her family against all odds. I was thrilled when Junaid came into her life. He’s a chef’s kiss. A divorced cop, smitten with Kiran. Koi flirt karna inse sikhe. Seriously, this guy can conduct Ted talks on flirting. Lastly the villain, Asif Ghazanfar – A master manipulator, I was in awe of the way his mind works. You just want to strangle him.

This book is unputdownable, with every chapter bringing you a serpentine twist you never thought of. A political saga, a family drama, a love story… it’s everything. I laughed, cried, and felt every emotion. And that end para? I literally bawled.

The story is primarily set in the US and Pakistan. The book revolves around the lives of four people. Their pasts, their presents and their futures.
The beginning of the book is very cute, four innocent hearts, unknown to the cruel world, falling in love and enjoying their company. But then everything changes in a heartbeat.
There's heartbreak and everything is destroyed in just a snap. The four people who were enjoying themselves are now bound to past family fueds and hatred amongst families.
The author has also introduced elements of thriller and suspense in the book making this the perfect ride for those who love romance and thriller.

Shadows of Innocence is a heartfelt mix of love, family, and destiny where four lives, Kiran, Osman, Sanam, and Zain, intertwine in an emotional, suspenseful tale. Kiran’s sacrifice, Osman’s innocence, Sanam’s longing, and Zain’s rebellion each bring depth and relatability to the story.

What makes this book stand out is that it’s not just about romance, but also about justice, loyalty, and forgiveness. The layered writing and multiple POVs kept me hooked, and by the end I felt I had lived the characters’ journeys myself.

A beautiful blend of romance, suspense, and family drama, definitely worth reading.

I got this as an ARC and I know I'm super behind on finishing this and posting my review but life has a way of getting in the way and it was kind of hard at times to even stay focused and wanting to keep reading it honestly.

Anyways, I did really enjoy this book! Though, I'm not going to lie, when I first read the blurb of this, what I read wasn't exactly what I was thinking it was going to be about 😂 it has multiple POVs which isn't too bad but in this case, in my own opinion, I would of enjoyed it so much more as a movie or TV series because of how much is going on in this book.

It has a lot. There are so many events that happen to different characters, but they all affect each other at the same time.

OVERALL in my opinion, it was a good story. It takes place in Pakistan and then eventually in the US and some back and forth between the two. But it was interesting to definitely read and learn of a country I truly don't know much about and to see certain customs they go through and do. It had moments where I laughed and I found myself tearing up too.

It truly is a great story, but it felt like at times it kept just drawing things out and I felt it was so much longer than it needed to be and then it ended and I was like "no, it can't just end like that" but it did lol so idk. I gave it 3 stars. Because again, it was overall a good story. I won't ever read it again as it felt like at times I was forcing myself to just read it and get through it. It's August 18th and I started reading this July 14th. So over a month it took me to finish this.

“Women are strong, but there comes a point when we realize that our strength is what makes men insecure. And so, we hide that strength, hoping they don’t see us as a threat, and we can get some semblance of peace.”

What can you expect -

- High stake love stories
- feminine strength
- power, greed and politics
- hope in adversity
- Redemption
- fade to black spice
(TW for mentions of SA, human trafficking and murder)

Shadows Of Innocence isn't your usual romance - even though the major plotlines are two love stories ( with HEA). A love story of two innocent teenagers - Sanam and Osman sets in motion a tale that demands unwavering faith and strength as everything around them falls apart in the aftermath of power plays and politics. The book takes you on a roller coaster of emotions as we explore what harm power in wrong hands can do and how far can some people go to get that power. Greed and betrayals when hand in hand, have the potential to break everything and anything. Yet, when you hold on to hope and get the right help from the right people - everything eventually falls in place and the good wins over the evil. This book to me is about what it cost the good for that ultimate victory. The pain families go through in their pursuit of justice.

The central characters to the story are Sanam and Osman and their love for each other that goes beyond any limit they thought possible. What Sanam does to protect Osman the only way possible for her and the way Osman refuses to hold anything against her at all, believing in her every second of every day and then holding her up through her battles was as sweet as it is heart warming. their pain makes you cry but the purity of their emotions for each other wins you over every time.

personally my favorite character was Kiran, and by extension of her Junaid. there is something about an older woman finally finding love and peace. kiran puts her entire life in service of her siblings and children and fighting the justice system even when it fails her again and again. inspector Junaid and lawyer Yusra finally help her in the right places and right ways to put the evil behind the bars. in turn, Junaid falls for her and one of my favourite things is the personal growth we see in kiran. the grumpy lady in the beginning to the woman who smiles and giggles - heart warming.

Kauser and Kaukub and their husbands are some of the most interesting side characters ever - especially with the unflinching way the husbands support them. i love reading about good husbands!!!

myla aka nousheen deserved another big hug. so did zain's mom.

On the contrary, Osman is the character I felt the least involved with, which is a shame because he is the central protagonist. but to me his arc was very uni dimensional. the shy silent teenage boy to the man he grew up to be, the only thing I know passionately about him as a reader is his unwavering faith in Sanam and his love for her ( he gets extra points for it NGL) but in general, all of his other relationships are just told about never shown. we don't get anything with him and Kiran's twins. or his sisters either. there are a few scattered scenes sure, but I am told he loves his sisters and everything rather than shown..the scene where he snaps at Kiran for writing his rights away???? never mentioned again. idk..I would have liked a little more of his scenes with Kiran especially.

on that note sanam and Kiran are Another missed opportunity.

and I kinda disliked osman the most in his scenes with ameerah. he is almost hateful. in the beginning,it still made sense that he thought she was hitting on him but even when she backs out, his behaviour never changes. he is constantly irritated by her and shows her that. Without ameerah, would osman have reached where he did? i don't know. he was a very shitty friend in his treatment of her till the end.

and the epilogue kind of hints about Osman's 'protectiveness' over Ameerah helping Zain? see tbh, I am all for Sanam and Osman cutting Zain off completely. sanam deserves to never see zain's face ever again. but Osman is in no Position to drag ameerah or judge her or have any opinions about her when he had treated her and her feelings/trauma constantly like a fly bugging him.

i am very excited and tuned in for the sequel nonetheless. and 10/10 recommend this book to everyone.

My Review — Shadows of Innocence by Malika D.

When I picked up Shadows of Innocence, I didn’t expect it to stay with me the way it did. I thought I was reading another emotional story, but what I got was something that felt alive. Every chapter pulled me in deeper. There were so many moments when I had to stop and breathe because I was feeling too much at once.

The first person who completely took my heart was Kiran. I don’t think I’ve read a character like her in a long time. She isn’t loud or dramatic, but her strength fills every page she’s on. I kept thinking about how quietly powerful she was. The way she keeps her family together, even when her own world is falling apart, is something that really hit me. I could feel her exhaustion, that kind of tired love that never stops giving. And yet, there’s so much grace in her. When she finally finds her peace, I actually smiled through tears. She’s the kind of woman I’d want to grow into someday.

Osman felt like the definition of calm. I don’t think I’ve seen a male character written with so much patience and sincerity. His love for Sanam was the kind of love that doesn’t need to be spoken about all the time, it just exists in small, constant gestures. His respect for her, the way he always chooses kindness over ego, made me stop and reread certain lines. That moment where he says her comfort will always be his responsibility stayed with me. Osman made me believe that softness doesn’t make a man weak.

Sanam reminded me of every quiet girl who’s been misunderstood. She’s gentle but not fragile, loving but not naive. I think what I loved most about her was how she grew through pain without turning bitter. Her love for Osman felt so pure, almost like it was built out of silence and understanding. I could feel her loneliness, that hidden ache of wanting to be loved for who she really was, not what her family wanted her to be. By the end, I was so proud of her.

Zain broke me in a different way. He’s the kind of character you don’t know how to feel about. You want to be angry, but you end up feeling sorry for him. His story reminded me that people aren’t born cruel, they’re shaped by what they go through. I could sense his anger, his confusion, that need to be seen and loved and forgiven. Even when he messed up, I couldn’t stop caring about him. He was my favorite in a strange way, because he felt real.

And Sofia. Her presence added another layer to this story. She’s not the main focus, but her struggle felt familiar. The way she hides her pain behind confidence, how she tries to hold control over her life even when it’s slipping away. She felt like a reflection of all the women who are trying to hold it together quietly.

Even the side characters were written with care. Junaid, Ameerah, Kauser, and Kaukub — everyone had their own weight in the story. I loved how the author gave each of them a space to breathe. Junaid and Kiran’s bond was something so unexpected but so heartwarming. I loved how his presence helped her find her laughter again. Ameerah’s arc broke me too, and I wished Osman had treated her with more understanding. She didn’t deserve the coldness she got, and I hope the sequel gives her something better.

What made this book special for me was how it wasn’t just about love. It was about family, about survival, about what power can do to people. There were moments where I was genuinely angry, moments where I cried, and moments where I just sat there quietly because I didn’t want to move past that feeling.

Malika D’s writing is the kind that stays with you. It’s raw and emotional without being forced. The way she connects politics, greed, trauma, and love is so beautifully done. Karachi, Houston, Boston, every setting had its own heartbeat, and every scene felt vivid.

When I finished the last page, I didn’t want to start another book right away. I just wanted to sit with these characters for a while. Shadows of Innocence isn’t a light read, but it’s the kind that fills you up. It shows how love can survive even when everything else burns down, how redemption isn’t about changing the past but about choosing differently in the future.

It broke me and healed me at the same time. And honestly, I can’t wait to see what happens next.

There’s a lot to unpack in this ambitious debut.

First: don’t come in with a short attention span. This is a big story—lots of characters, lots of relationships, and plenty of plot. Reading it feels a bit like being introduced to 27 people at a giant cocktail party where you pretend to remember everyone’s names and Google them later in the bathroom. It’s overwhelming at first, but eventually, the main players rise to the surface, and you’re off.

Told through four rotating POVs, the author deftly weaves together politics, family dysfunction, trauma, ambition, and a toxic patriarch—think Logan Roy in a shalwar kameez—that you’d hire a therapist *and* a hitman to deal with. The two main characters are siblings: a fierce, capable older sister and her younger brother, who starts out a bit like a damp towel but grows on you. Their character arcs are solid. She learns to open her dried-up heart to find love again. He goes from puppy-eyed to quietly badass with literal bullet fragments lodged near his broken heart.

Plot-wise, enough is going on to require an Excel spreadsheet. (Pretty sure the author had one open at all times.) Politics, business, abuse, PTSD, a little light potassium poisoning—you name it. Nothing appears out of nowhere; the foreshadowing is deliberate, and most of the story’s many threads are tied up with care. You get a rich sense of Pakistani traditions, government corruption, and fun facts like: they drive on the left, Valium goes well with meatballs (if you’re drugging someone, obviously), and love is a battlefield with Urdu subtitles.

Now, let’s nitpick (gently, with the hope of being invited back for another ARC):

The first few chapters move slowly as we sit with the main characters in their teen years. Their day-to-day lives are compelling, but their voices occasionally feel... mature beyond their years. Some of the dialogue feels overly scripted, especially in emotional scenes, where people should be stumbling, interrupting, feeling things—not speaking in complete sentences like "I want the fire that burns in your eyes when you look at me, and I want you to let it set me ablaze." (My jaw clicked a few times—might need to get that checked.)

The closed-door romance scenes lean hard into poetic prose and melodrama. If you're into sweeping declarations of eternal devotion mid-eye contact, you’ll be thrilled. But if, like me, you twitch at the words “destinies entangled” because you're in therapy from reading too much Wharton and Proust as a teen—welcome—let’s take deep breaths together.

There are also missed opportunities for levity. Some relationships—especially one between the sister and her eventual partner—had great potential for tragi-comic brilliance. The prose can veer into dangerously purple territory and soul-gazing monologues that could delight readers who love this style. And at times, the narration spells things out too directly. Trust us to connect the dots—we brought pencils.

That said: the emotional arcs land. The themes are weighty and thoughtful. And the story sticks with you. The book has a lot to say—and says it with heart. Go forth. Read it. Maybe make a mind map. Hydrate. You’ll enjoy the ride.

It took me a fair 8 days to read this one. So, brace yourselves; this is going to be long.

“Sometimes, good and bad are not defined by one’s actions, but by the choices one makes.”

“Shadows of Innocence” by Malika D is a story told from the POVs of four young hearts caught in the web of family drama, politics, and much bigger issues than just corrupt systems.

Kiran Tariq, the eldest daughter of the Tariq family, lost her parents at a very young age, but all she knew was she had no time to grieve, as she had the responsibility of her three younger siblings and her own twins. She is the strongest woman I know. People say eldest daughters are the unpaid parents to their siblings, and Kiran became one when she raised them all to be amazing human beings. She knew she had no one to rely on, so she became the shield protecting her whole family against the cruel world. Until Inspector Juniad came, who broke every wall she had built around her heart and gave her the love and support she deserved. He became an anchor for her to rely on. Their banter, their chemistry, his teasing, and her blushing: all of it had my heart.

Then comes the baby brother, Osman Tariq, a boy who carried the burden of his mother’s death and one who wanted to make something of himself for the sake of the sister who raised him. Young yet responsible, mature beyond his years, he did everything in his power to protect his family and his love, Sanam. Sanam, on the other hand, had everything but was still alone and loved the gentle and caring boy who gave her the calm in her chaotic life. She sacrificed her own life to save him, and their love, its warmth, melted my heart. Even when they weren’t together, even when they weren’t capable of loving each other, they held onto it, and the loyalty and purity of their love was commendable.

Then comes Zain, the total opposite of the calm and composed Osman, his cousin who let his anger and obsession in love overpower his judgment. But the way he had a redemption arc was heart-touching. I kind of felt bad for his character, always the misunderstood one, always the one who was left behind, always the one who was looked down on by his father, but he overcame all the challenges to become a decent man.

This book was a heavy read, with themes of child abuse, sexual abuse, mental trauma, drug and human trafficking, and money laundering. And then there was Asif Ghazanfar, the man I loathed the most, the man who played with people’s lives as if they were just chess pieces.

The characters in the book are raw, flawed, and beautifully written. The story is set in two places, Pakistan and the USA.
The ending was the most satisfying part of the book, with justice being served.

Overall, this was painful, empowering, and intense but a necessary read. It broke me in the best way possible, and I’m glad that I read this one.

Shadows of Innocence
by Malika D.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Thank you to the author for the digital copy!

“Four hearts tangled in love, lies, and legacies that were never theirs to choose.”

This one grabbed me by the throat from page one and refused to let go 😮‍💨🔥. A sweeping tale set between Pakistan and the US, this book is not just romance—it’s politics, betrayal, bloodlines, and the kind of generational drama that keeps you up until 3am whispering just one more chapter.

Shadows of Innocence asks the hardest questions: what do you choose when love collides with loyalty? When revenge feels easier than forgiveness? When family secrets are darker than your enemies? It’s layered, messy, and so heartbreakingly beautiful.

What I Loved
• Osman = the greenest green flag 🌿💚 absolute perfection, respectful, and swoon-worthy beyond belief.
• Sanam’s arc! She’s tender but strong, and their love is innocent but not naive 🥹.
• Kiran is the queen of my heart 👑🔥—fierce, loyal, and everything I want in a heroine.
• Zain… oh, Zain. Morally gray, infuriating, magnetic. I hated him. I loved him. I rooted for him anyway 😭🖤.
• The constant cliffhangers! Every chapter ended with me clutching my Kindle like “EXCUSE ME, WHAT NOW?” 📖⚡
• The blend of politics, crime, and family loyalty gave me Godfather meets Pakistani high society vibes 🇵🇰✨.

What Didn’t Work for Me
• SO many names and POVs at first 🌀—I had to pause and remind myself who was who (but once the story unfolded, it clicked).
• A few over-the-top villain moments (Asif is basically the devil in designer suits 😈), though honestly, it kind of added to the drama.
• Fade-to-black spice—I know it’s not that kind of book, but you know me, I wouldn’t have minded just a little more heat 🌶️😉.

TROPES / THEMES
• Star-crossed lovers 🥀💔
• Family empires and stolen legacies 💼🩸
• Cousins torn apart by loyalty ⚔️
• Revenge marriages 😱💍
• Strong women holding everything together 👩‍👧‍👦
• Morally gray men we hate-love 🖤🔥

Final Thoughts:
This book isn’t just a romance—it’s an experience. Malika D. delivers a sprawling, emotional, politically charged story that made me cry, gasp, and highlight quotes like a madwoman. It’s messy in the best way: love, betrayal, legacy, and hope all woven together.

4.5 stars from me ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨—and I will be devouring book two the second it’s out. If you love complex family sagas with unforgettable characters and slow-burn tension, don’t walk, RUN to add this one to your TBR 🏃‍♀️📚.

I WAS HOOKED!!!💪🏾😤
I absolutely devoured this book!

From the perfectly paced premises to equally thrilling climax i loved every part of it, the heavy foreshadowing from the start was a cherry on top.🍒

It's a story of innocent souls and how they are shaped in this cruel society. I'm always drawn to stories with very Evil genius Villain and soft n real protagonists who are not saved for the sake of plot only. Asif ghazanfar, Osman, Sanam and Kiran are just what i wanted.Asif is not your average villain, he's one step ahead of everyone and spares no one.
First of all-the names!!! The author killed it with the name selection, each name exudes the aura befitting the character.

🌤️Kiran - that ray of sunshine, giving 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐞 and 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡 to her family. She's your household hero of a desi family. Her relationship with her siblings, her struggles and eventually her love story was Lovely to read. Not to spoil but her guy is swoon-worthy.

🩷 Sanam n Osman - they are both such a sweetheart, while you read you dont realise when you started to fall in love them. They are not your average old school love birds, but human beings with their own responsibilities, problems and conscience. but still a fool in love, More than that, their 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 is one thing which was beautifully written and something which every girl would desire.

🕊️ Zain - i'm a sucker for 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝 characters.(Author you HAVE to work on his story next!!). Zain is the kind of character you cant help but understand where they are coming from, he is just a victim to his father's evil schemes, gaslighting, manipulation and his mother's neglect. i always related to mary kate's quote that "no one ever tells you that bravery feels like fear" but my man ZAIN showed it!! He is My favorite Character and deserves all the love in the world.

In my pursuit of not spoiling the book i guess i've written too much. i can't help but want everybody to read what i liked so much. this book made an emotional connection with me, from wattpad updates to a whole freaking book, i feel we have come so far together.

It made me laugh, cry, & feel strong emotions. If you want to read romantic suspense, family saga, and crime fiction novel with elements of coming-of-age and political intrigue, This is it for you.🩷🌸🤌🏻

i finished the whole book in 2 days but procrastinated writing a review because thats how speechless and content i was,i wanted to write a review as realistic as the story and its character are, their personality, their thought process, their ambitions, Everything!! everything was a treat to read.✨🎥
The only reason i gave it 4.5 stars rating is because i liked the wattpad original more than the outcome, some plot points and a supporting character which i loved.

Anything that I will say, will fall short for this beautiful book! 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙄𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 is that kind of book - that finishes you, not the other way! It wrecked me in the best way possible - it broke me, rebuilt me, and then broke me again over and over. I don't know how long it will take me to recover from this book because Malika?! - what she did with Shadows of Innocence is absolute perfection!

Set between Pakistan and the United States, it follows the lives of Kiran, Osman, Sanam, and Zain - four people tied together by love, betrayal, and the weight of family legacies. The story beautifully mixes politics, power, and emotions, showing how the thirst for control can destroy generations while love quietly tries to rebuild what’s lost.

What makes this book special is how real the characters feel. Kiran’s courage, Osman and Sanam’s tender romance, Ameerah's resilience and Zain’s complex redemption all add depth and heart to the story. Zain isn't our stereotypical toxic lover turned into a hero who just gets past his wrong-doings with just a simple apology - he is the definition of a man who knows how to take accountability and responsibility! His story of character development inspired me in so many different ways that I never thought I had issues with - his story of redemption made the story more unique and stand out from others!

Another thing that I loved about Malika is how she wrote our female characters as an epitome of strength, resilience and bravery - starting from how Kiran didn't give up on finding justice to herself and to her family - to Zarine, ultimately speaking up and facing her own demons. Malika doesn’t shy away from heavy themes like patriarchy, corruption, and class divide, but handles them with honesty and grace. Also, can we talk about how Junaid gave the energy of a man written by a woman?! - absolute green flag energy, his character made me blush so hard and gave me butterflies! 🫶

This isn’t just a romance - it’s a story about strength, identity, and hope. It’s about women who rise above the silence and men who learn to confront their past. Shadows of Innocence is heartfelt, powerful, and unforgettable - a perfect blend of love, pain, and revolution.

📚✨ Book Review: Shadows of Innocence by Malika D ✨📚

If you thought family drama ended with inheritance fights, wait till you step into this world - power, betrayal, love, politics, and redemption collide so perfectly here that it feels like a Pakistani K-drama dipped in pain and poetry 😭🔥

Four lives : Kiran, Osman, Sanam, and Zain - bound by blood, secrets, and decisions that echo across continents 🌍.Kiran is fighting to reclaim a legacy that was stolen from her family two decades ago, a giant empire meant for Osman. But neither she nor Osman realize just how deeply they’re entangled in a web of corruption spun long before they were born 🕸️Meanwhile, Sanam and Osman’s innocent romance blooms in a world built on lies. Their sweet moments? Totally heart-melting 🧡. But soon, their love becomes collateral in a game of political greed; a storm they were never prepared for.And then there’s Zain. His story is a tragic reminder that privilege doesn’t protect you from pain, sometimes it amplifies it. One wrong choice, one reckless heartbeat, and his whole life burns around him 🖤The story moves beautifully between Pakistan and the United States, full of lavish backdrops, sharp emotions, and gut-punching dialogues that stay with you long after the final page.

Writing Style – Malika D’s writing is lush, cinematic, and unapologetically emotional 🎬✨. You don’t just read her characters, you bleed with them. She gives every scene a heartbeat, balancing poetic narration with raw, relatable pain. Her female characters are resilient, her men broken but sincere, and her plot twists? chef’s kiss 🤌. Every chapter feels like a slow-burn revelation; you go from romance to tragedy to hope like you’re flipping through the story of your own life.💌

Why You Should Read It ??

For those who love emotional destruction disguised as literature 💥.
Because Kiran Tariq will become your emotional support heroine 🖤.
Because Sanam and Osman will remind you what first love should feel like before the world taints it 🕊️.
For the family politics, dark secrets, and “oh my god WHAT just happened” kind of plot twists 😱.
✨ Final Vibe Check:
Heartbreak level: 100/10 💔
Tear count: uncountable 😭
Theme: Love, survival, legacy, and how even the purest hearts are shaped by the world’s darkest sins 🌘

Shadows of Innocence" by Malika D. is a beautiful story that details the pain of legacy, power, and family with such captivating writing and amazing characters that have my whole heart. The book isn't just about love (I know I should have read the blurb first but the cover and the tropes were enough to convince me...) it is about how family politics, and personal struggles along side teenage love?? The story’s was amazing dont get me wrong but the charcaters...they had me ready to fight for them, their struggles and everything about them, I don't know if I will recover from this anytime soon. The character's fight against privilege, injustice, and heartbreak were so well written that i started feeling offended on their behalf. From the very beginning, the author described Masood Tariq and Asif Ghazanfar stand as symbols of greed and toxic masculinity instead of romanticising them, which was great. The consequences of their action on the lives of Kiran, Osman, Sanam, and Zain, who must deal with them. Kiran's charactermight have been my favourite (cause who doesn't love a strong independant woman who fought for herself and her siblings). Osman’s patience agianst Sanam’s sacrifice and Zain’s ( tbh I hated him in the beginning, but now I just feel bad for him) need for validation, making their relationship complicated. Sanam and Osman’s relationship survives the chaos, managing to survive. The author doesn't potray love as grand gestures (again nothing wrong with that) but instead as a force that survives despite all the challenges through at it from both society and time. the book explores theme of family honor, consequence of silence, and importance of reputation. The plot twists were.....just wow...like no words...just wow. Dont even get me started on the dialouges, I dont think I have ever planned ro read a book once again before I even finished it, infact I actually wanted a physical copy just so thay i could annotate it. I loved how the women who are usually portrayed as weak and dependant are the strong, main character vibes people, while the men are written with vulnerabilities

From the very first scene, I knew this book was going to scar me beautifully. When a man's obsession with legacy destroys generations, it sets the standard for all the generations that follows. Masood Tariq is the face of a whole system of toxic masculinity & feudal supremacy that still all around the South Asian societies. He is not just one man. I also felt the ghosts of all the women who have ever been silenced rise up behind Naeema and Zarine when he demands a grandson "to carry the family name."

Before I even dive into Osman, Sanam, Zain, & Maham (ARGHHH my heart can’t handle that yet) I have to scream about the political subtext in this book, because it’s absolutely brilliant!! Not expecting this kind of things. This is a rare book, i mean it's the one that makes you feel something deeply & also allows your mind to think fiercely. It’s about love yes, but deep inside it's about the love that crosses boundaries, women who rebuild empires from scratch and the generations trapped in the politics of pain.

I would give this book, the best read of 2025 because it explores the patriarchal obsession with male heirs. The feudal system that still dictates family honor & women’s worth. The relationship between politics & the media, where only reputations matters. The class division that makes even love into sin.

Yes, it’s romantic and also heart breaking read but it's also about the political revolution, especially for equality and justice. Throughout the book, the author never forgets to make me feel the fact that it's more than just a normal fiction book.

This book is for all the girls who have been told they are too noisy. For every single soul who was told they're defined by their poverty. For all the women who had to take care of their families while men played gods.

"In the shadow of their innocence lurked greed, lust and despair. Yet in those shadows, they discovered love, friendship, and hope.”

Genre : Suspense + Romance
I blame myself for never checking the summary whenever I pick up a book. But boy, was I pleasantly surprised! It started off so sweetly— wholesome vibes, everything going smooth (tho you could sense the undercurrent of something ABOUT to happen). Then then then! All gears shift. Pretty much the whole story tangles like a spider web and you're cluelessly trying to crack what's going on. From money laundering to trafficking, it ticks off the whole criminal check list
I've so much to say! The stakes were always high! The book opens with the betrayal of a family legacy (Kiran's family two decades ago), then shows how the younger generation become pawns in political and financial games, love entanglements, as well as moral and emotional conflicts.
You get family saga, romance, thriller and hellli lots of layers.
The women in the story especially had so much strength and depth. And I can certainly say the book title lives up to its name , we see characters forced to make moral
trade-offs: love vs survival, justice vs status quo.
(I wanted to teleport inside of the book and do mukkebaazi with Asif-beghairat-Ghazanfar)
I loved Zain so so much! (Don't judge he's my fav
) His
battle with his conscience, including how easily it is for him to be manipulated was so well written.

Sanam and Osman are such goals. The amount of patience, yearning and waiting
I loved them all! Kiran, fiercely loyal to her family's lost legacy. Osman, her younger brother, the nerdy boy caught up in love. Sanam Uzair, wealthy on the outside but starved of parental love. Zain Ghazanfar, heir to a billionaire father, yet always seeking validation and burdened by expectations. Special mention to my favs JUNAID!
and
Iftikhar
I would strongly recommend this to readers who:
-enjoy multi- POV, romance + suspense
-Like emotional intensity + complex love stories + characters with flaws and depth.

I know that I have been holding up the review Becoz “some books did not merely tell a story they eats you up.”
One of such reads was Shadows of Innocence!!

I have read it eight days ago, yet it took me a lot of time to write about it ….as this book was not only heavy but also extremely deep, serious, and emotional for me !

The very first chapter of this book will give u taste of politics, family drama, blood, revenge, vengeance and love. I felt like I was reading a strong Pakistani drama on the pages of fiction full of feelings, culture and complications🥀
I swear I could even visualize every scene as it unfolded.
This is a book that you simply cannot miss in case you love reading books that challenge you, whose each page is full of tension, secrets.

Yet for me it was not a light and easy read, becoz I have never read a story like this and this is the type of book that causes your brain to spin.

All the characters in this book Zain, Sanam, Osman, and the side characters all were having their own purpose in the story and I think that is why this book is unforgettable for me
and one thing which is a very different is that the story is set in Pakistan & I could actually visualise the story and usage of Urdu words for Relationship like Ammi, Api etc gave This book a personal touch ——also Osman is such beautifully written character. Sweet, forceful and very human. (I was reading this book while eating a Lollipop 🤧😹)
I did underlined thousands of passages and scenes in my Kindle. It has caused me all the feelings I had - it broke me, healed me, and broke me. I came out both emotionally exhausted and full.

I still don’t know if I have actually put up all my feelings and emotion in this review or not, but I just want to say that this book deserves the recognisation and please read it. You will love it. The characters are so beautifully written. I don’t want to give spoilers to u all , so please read it. 🤌🏻😭

From the very beginning, I was completely drawn into Shadows of Innocence. The first chapter immediately pulled me in, and I found myself so invested in this book . There’s a fascinating mix of emotions woven into the story, but it never felt forced or overwhelming even it added layers and tension that made the world feel alive and complex. I genuinely loved how that element kept the stakes high and made the narrative so gripping.

The characters are remarkable. Each one is written with such depth and authenticity that they feel like real people rather than just fictional characters . Their emotions, struggles, and relationships are raw and believable, and I felt so connected to their journeys. The author really put thought into so much efforts shaping personalities that they feel so relatable in all their flaws and strengths.

One thing that impressed me the most is how tightly the story is structured. There’s no unnecessary dragging or filler. Every scene, every line of dialogue contributes to the flow of the story, keeping it fast-paced and immersive. Even with the intricate plots and multiple threads, the pacing moves smoothly, making it impossible to put down.

I also found the story itself refreshingly unpredictable. It kept me on my toes throughout, constantly surprising me in ways I didn’t see coming. There’s a way in the writing that made the reading experience exciting from start to finish, and I loved the way the plot twists were handled.

The emotional depth of the book is another standout. It’s layered with feeling, with moments that made me smile, sigh, or even pause to absorb the pain of what the characters were experiencing. And speaking of relationships, the romance in the book is simply beautiful.

Overall, Shadows of Innocence is a gripping, emotionally rich story with well-crafted characters, an unpredictable plot, and a careful balance of intrigue, romance, and heart. I genuinely enjoyed every moment of it, and it’s a story I loved reading.

Shadows of Innocence broke my heart and healed it in the best way possible. This book doesn’t just tell a story - it seeps into your heart and lingers long after you’ve turned the last page. What begins as a tale of family legacy and corruption soon unfolds into a deeply emotional exploration of love, betrayal, and the choices that change everything. It’s a story about love, loss, and finding light after the darkest phases.

Kiran’s determination to reclaim what was stolen from her family is inspiring yet heartbreaking. Her strength becomes the spine of the story, showing how far one can go for love and justice.

Sanam and Osman’s journey isn’t perfect, but their love stays quiet, constant, and unshakable. Sanam’s world is cold and loveless, while Osman grows up with nothing but his sister’s strength holding him together. Destiny brings them together and tests their love. Heartbreak, loneliness, pain - despite it all, they never stop loving each other. Their tender connection amid chaos feels pure and fragile, a reminder that innocence can still exist even in a world tainted by greed.

Zain’s father, Asif Ghazanfar, driven by power and manipulation, becomes a symbol of how greed destroys not just wealth but people’s hearts. The other characters in the novel also suffer deeply, especially because of him. Everyone were fighting their own battles, and every choice left a mark. It’s not just about love - it’s also about family, power, and the damage greed can cause.

What I loved most is how the author shows love that doesn’t need grand gestures. It’s love that survives silence, distance, and time - a love that bends but never breaks. Shadows of Innocence is raw and emotional. It’s not a fairytale - it’s a reflection of how real love endures, even when the world tries to tear it apart.

There are so many characters here to fall in love with🌷

I didn't see it coming – the way this book would consume me, body and soul. One moment I was reading, and the next, I was lost in a world of pain, love, and resilience. Shadows of Innocence is more than just a love story; it's a testament to the enduring power of love in the face of chaos, deceit, and corruption.

Set against the contrasting backdrops of Pakistan and the U.S., the lives of Kiran, Osman, Sanam, and Zain are forever changed by the forces of love, loss, and family legacies that refuse to be silenced. From the first page, you're immersed in a world where wealth and power reign supreme, and every choice has a lasting impact. Yet, amidst the darkness, love finds a way to persevere.

Osman and Sanam's love is a gentle, unwavering flame that burns bright despite distance, heartbreak, and adversity. It's a love that feels authentic, the kind that you hold onto tightly, even when the world around you is crumbling. Kiran, with her fierce determination and unshakeable loyalty, stole my heart, and Junaid's quiet strength and devotion made their love story a truly satisfying read. And then there's Zain – broken, vulnerable, and striving to be better.

Mallika D's writing is raw, honest, and unflinching, peeling back the layers of trauma and pain that often remain hidden. The narrative is deliberate, measured, and unrelenting, drawing you into the darkest corners of the characters' psyches. It's a haunting, uncomfortable read that will leave you breathless and introspective.

This book doesn't shy away from the ugly truths; it confronts them head-on, and the result is a story that will linger long after you turn the last page. If you're looking for a read that will shake you to your core, leave you changed, and make you believe in the transformative power of love, then Shadows of Innocence is the book for you.
