When Vengeance Bleeds Royal

Rate this book
She swore vengeance for her sister’s murder.
The gods demand a bloodier price.

Dark, addictive, and laced with forbidden desire, When Vengeance Bleeds Royal is the first book in the Blood Descent series—a brutal fantasy romance perfect for fans of Carissa Broadbent and Sarah J. Maas.

“You shattered him,” he says, steady and sure. “And gods help me, you remain the most beautiful sight I’ve ever seen.” He leans in. “I should fear you, but all I want is to kneel.”

In the fractured land of Cyrathea, every territory hides a cursed artifact, relics forged by gods who were betrayed and imprisoned. The Brotherhood of Eternal Shadow hunts them all, weaving lies through court politics and blood-soaked bargains.

Lumira Kyrvayne has only one goal: kill the man who murdered her sister. But her vow of vengeance drags her into a deeper game—one where secrets rot beneath every oath, magic bleeds from forbidden relics, and a hooded Shadowspire guard keeps crossing her path with eyes she cannot forget.

Enemies close in. Allies shift like smoke. And the man who should be her enemy might also be the one person who can unravel her resolve.

When Vengeance Bleeds Royal is a dark fantasy romance brimming with:

A morally gray heroine who refuses to be tamed

An enigmatic, hooded antihero with secrets of his own

Forbidden attraction, brutal magic, and deadly politics

Cursed artifacts and imprisoned gods

A slow-burn obsession that cuts as deep as any blade

Please note: This series contains dark themes, twisted loyalty, and romance with sharp edges. Check content warnings before reading.

I always love a good book where the FMC is the morally gray character, and When Vengeance Bleed Royal definitely hit the spot.

"His screams would have once horrified her. Now they satisfy a need she didn’t know she carried. She doesn’t want to stop. She fucking can’t."

Lumira is angry. Someone murdered her sister and she is on a mission to find them and make them pay. She needs vengeance!

As a princess in a court full of people with their own selfish motives, lead by a Queen whos only motivation in life is power and politics, Lumira trusts no one, and is utterly alone since losing her sister. Struggling with her grief and driven by her anger, this story of vengeance pulled at my heart while navigating me through twists and turns that kept me turning the page to find out what happens next!

"Then a rupture—sudden and absolute—tears through her. Not a wall breaking, but a dam. Not magic—grief. Not vengeance—anguish. The energy building since Emberly’s death finds direction—pure and violent."

Along the way, we also meet the dark and ever present shadow. A man who is always present, always lurking in the shadows around Lumira, and who always knows more than he should. The tension between them is hot but, can she trust him?

I definitely need more of this series. I need to know more about the shadow, more about Lumira's story, and what will happen next! Lumira is evolving into something that even she is unsure of and I cant wait to find out what happens in the next book.

Thank you to LZ Cathcart for the opportunity to read this as an ARC. I am hooked and looking forward to the rest of this series.

This is my ARC review.

Lumira is a morally grey FMC who is seeking retribution for her sister’s murder. She does what is necessary to and plays the royal game to gain answers and piece together the puzzle. She makes allies in those she would normally pass off and her enemies are whom she thought she truly knew. She is strong, resilient, and calculating in her steps and how she approaches situations.

Except she cannot get past the Shadowspire guard who whispers into her ear and caresses her skin with his shadows. Is he friend or foe? Time will tell. But for now she has memories, no matter how hard she tries to lock down, somehow always creep up.

When Vengeance Bleeds Royal has all the interest of a fantasy story - morally grey character (one of the few times it’s actually the FMC), a magic system of gods, elements, creatures, and artifacts, royal bloodline intrigue, and a shadowy MMC.

I look forward to where Lumira’s story goes in book 2, When Shadows Burn Steel.

This book was incredible.

The slow burn. The way that the FMC is the morally grey one. The forbidden magic. The shadowy mmc. Not only was this book not like every typical romantasy book. It was full of emotion. It was full of secret societies. It was full of deceptions and lies. It was incredible.

It’s beautifully written book that I can’t wait to read again.

Calculating. Tactful. Clever. Powerful.

For the girls with quiet rage and clever hands, who were told independence was a flaw—may the world learn to fear your silence.

This story was more than a royal story based around the gods and long forgotten and buried secrets. It's focus is a fierce and loyal Lumira who has been working against the very institutions she was bred for and into. At the loss of her sister, she refuses to accept it was mere coincidence. They were connected and had their secrets, they had their own way of communicating and sending messages without arising suspicion. All these clues and more questions unanswered leads her to discover more than she ever bargained for but the tools to finish the work her sister started. Finding alliances in the unlikely and betrayal in her closed circle - she is rewriting her truth and reclaiming herself for who she wants to be. She's aware, smart, cunning, cold, a rule breaker, not a follower. She is Lumira and that holds power - power fuels vengeance and when vengeance comes it has a name and bleeds, doesn't discriminate between royals or the mundanes unworthy of a glance.

A powerful FMC that doesn't take sh*t and fears no one and cannot be molded to something she isn't. A great reminder to the strength of women, the rage we keep under the surface and how the silence that we carry can be lethal, giving vengeance a face, a name. We are not weak and we will not be confined by the weight/expectations of those around us trying to make us small. Take up space!

Let me tell you this slow burn obsession, fantasy book was so good. Lumira is a morally grey fmc who won’t be controlled or tamed, a hooded mmc who is to die for and has some secrets of his own! This was a chef’s kiss.

A Slow-Burn Masterpiece with Cinematic Potential

This novel is an evocative, slow-burn tale that draws readers into a meticulously crafted world, where every detail feels like a brushstroke in a grand cinematic landscape. The narrative unfolds gently, allowing the reader to become fully immersed in its mysterious atmosphere and complex characters.

The world-building is absolutely beautiful. It’s clear the author has invested time and care into creating a setting that feels both rich and tangible, where every element—from the landscapes to the cultures—is filled with depth and authenticity. It’s the kind of world you can get lost in, where the scenery is almost cinematic in its detail, begging to be seen on the big screen. One can easily imagine the vivid imagery translating into a visually stunning movie adaptation.

The character development is where this novel truly shines. The characters are complex and layered, evolving slowly but surely over the course of the book. Their personal journeys are as intricate as the world they inhabit, each step forward feeling earned. This gradual progression gives them a realism that’s refreshing and emotionally engaging.

The pace of the book is deliberate, offering a slow-burn approach that builds tension and mystery. It’s not an action-packed thriller, but rather a contemplative narrative that pulls you deeper with each page. This slow unfolding of the plot allows the characters and the world they inhabit to shine, creating a rich, atmospheric experience that lingers long after you’ve closed the book.

Overall, this is a book that thrives on detail and mystery, weaving together an immersive world with fascinating characters. It feels like a story begging to be seen in motion, on a grand screen where every subtle nuance of its beauty can be fully realized.

When Vengeance Bleeds Royal is the kind of book that sinks its claws into you and doesn’t let go. I loved getting to know each character—their secrets, their scars, their impossible choices—and constantly trying to figure out who was an ally and who was just waiting to twist the knife. Every chapter felt like a new revelation, every conversation a dangerous game. This book truly pulls you in.

Lumira is brave, fierce and beautifully flawed, a heroine driven by vengeance but haunted by everything it costs her. And the mysterious Shadowspire guard?!?! I was as captivated by him as Lumira was. Their tension is electric, slow-burning, sharp-edged, and full of forbidden longing. Did I mention their chemistry is sooo spicy!!

The world of Cyrathea is rich and darkly enchanting, filled with cursed relics, imprisoned gods, and loyalties that shift like shadows. It’s one of those rare stories that makes you ache for the next page. I was so torn between wanting answers and not wanting it to end.

If you love morally gray characters, deadly secrets, and romance that blurs the line between love and ruin, this book will completely consume you. I’m already desperate for the next one. 💔✨

I was lucky enough to be chosen to receive an ARC of this book!

If you love a book where the FMC is morally gray then When Vengeance Bleeds Royal is for you.

Lumira is on a mission to avenge her sister’s death. She is set on a path full of puzzles with twists and turns. She finds betrayal from those closest to her and alliances with those she never thoughts she would align with.

This is a fantasy that is full of political world building with interesting characters. L.Z. Cathcart knows how to draw you into the world. You found yourself feeling as if you too were learning right along with Lumira. This story has mythical creatures, interesting magic system with magical tokens, morally gray FMC, and a shadow MMC, one who the FMC finds herself drawn too when even though he is supposed to be her enemy.

It did start a little slow to me, as do most new fantasies as you are having to learn the new world, but L.Z.’s writing is beautiful and draws you in and you soon find yourself not being able to put the book down.

I cannot wait to see where the story goes in book 2, When Shadows Burn Steel.

The main character Lumira is a bitter and vengeance seeking princess, after the death of a loved one. She plays her role as strong princess well but inside she is sad and full of grief.

The ever presence of the shadowspire guard confuses her, with his hot breath and seductive words, she does all to keep her wall up … what will happen if it starts to crumble? ;)

This story kept me going with all its twists and turns, the intriguing fantasy world with gods and artifacts. And as the story went on, it became even more interesting.

The suspense and slow burning chemistry went hand in hand in this beautiful story! I’ll want to read more. ☺️.

A delicious fantasy that will leave you wanting more. The authors lyrical writing style ripe with metaphors kept my brain tingling trying to unravel the secrets confessed.
The characters had layered depth. The world building, magical and creature elements, exquisite. Not a huge fan of political intrigue plot lines but this one did not overwhelm.
Definitely looking forward to the continued story in the next installment with hopefully more exploration with Lumira and her sumptuous shadow.

I got this as an ARC and I think the story has potential but it missed for me. The FMC is trying to figure out what happened to her sister’s death and is trying to piece together what happened. Unfortunately, the FMC comes across as arrogant and apparently everyone can read her emotions on her face. I thought she would be smarter and a better fighter with all her training but that fell short for me. I liked the premise of the book it just fell short for me.

L.Z. Cathcart's debut fantasy crafts an immersive world of arcane bloodlines and crumbling thrones. I loved the vivid realm, though key lore could unfold earlier to anchor readers sooner.
The protagonist's brutal upbringing under a tyrannical mother and cutthroat court fuels raw empathy, but the first half's repetitive emphasis on her cruelty grows wearying - easing up could tighten pacing without dimming the stakes.
The slow-burn romance sparks with chemistry from the start, yet skips the gradual buildup I craved, with too few interactions favoring mystery over intimacy. More stolen moments would deepen the heat.
The true thrill? Main characters explosive power reveal at the climax - a cathartic unleashing of vengeance that's utterly satisfying and worth every trial.
I enjoyed the story and I am eagerly waiting for the sequel with more of their romantic development.
Overall ideal for fans of political intrigue with triumphant twists.

This book was amazing from start to finish! The writing style is so beautiful I don't think I've ever even read anything similar to it. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but it was definitely mine. It almost made every page feel like a poem. The characters we awesome! I do wish we had gotten to meet the sister but she was talked about so much that it was close enough and very obvious she was amazing. I also wish we'd had a little more from her shadow guard, mom, and Jaggard but hopefully we will in book 2 which I can't wait to read! The only thing I'd maybe change about this book is more dialog. The character development was she went from bad ass in training to touch me and die and from being alone to having sooooo many friends. I honestly drug out this ending because I didn't want it to be over. A truly great read and I want more!

This book was such an experience, down to the minor details. The world building Cathcart provided was something you need to break out the journals for- and I am. Here. For. It.

This is a first book in a series that I hope is forever long (sorry girl). We follow the story of Crimsum’s Blood Descent, Lumira Kyrvayne, she is as rage filled as they come. As well as capable, quick, and stand her own. She’s basically the female version of a morally grey MMC in a world full of secrets, betrayal & tactical motives. It’s a world full of lies-like actually I thought everyone was lying to her.

This is a world full of puppets and puppet masters, and Lumira has to decide who wears what mask.

Imagine Game of Thrones + Throne of Glass. If you are into world building, badass FMCs, and mystery’s to uncover- this is one for you.

When Vengeance Bleeds Royal was feral, fast-paced, and absolutely addictive. I was swept away with its richly detailed scene setting—every corridor, shadow, and whispered moment felt cinematic. The twists landed, the tension simmered, and the world pulled me in from page one. And that morally gray FMC? Obsessed. She’s sharp, layered, and impossible not to root for. I devoured this and already want more. 👀🔥 Cannot wait for book 2, When Shadows Burn Steel, releasing Fall 2026

I absolutely love this book! The main character, Lumira, is such a badass and I was hooked from the very beginning when she starts trying to discover what really happened to her sister Emberly. The story just keeps unraveling in the best way. The author does such an amazing job describing everything, especially the different characters & places. It seriously feels like you’re right there in the world with them. I couldn’t put it down and can’t wait for the next book!!

Also- can we talk about the pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book? GENIUS!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ **A Darkly Enchanting Tale of Power, Blood, and Betrayal**

*When Vengeance Bleeds Royal* is a breathtaking descent into a world where magic is both a blessing and a curse, and bloodlines carry more than just royal privilege—they carry prophecy, vengeance, and secrets that could shatter empires.

From the very first page, I was completely hooked. L.Z. weaves a lush, intricate tapestry of deceit and divine power, where gods are trapped and loyalty is as fragile as glass. Every chapter pulls you deeper into a story teeming with tension, heartbreak, and shocking revelations. The characters are beautifully complex—heroes and villains blur together in a dance of ambition, guilt, and fate.

The writing itself is *spellbinding*—lyrical yet sharp, full of imagery that lingers long after you close the book. The political intrigue is masterfully crafted, and the magical system feels both ancient and terrifyingly alive. By the end, I found myself knowing exactly who truly deserved the throne… and who would dare claim it.

*When Vengeance Bleeds Royal* isn’t just a fantasy—it’s a storm of emotion and power that leaves your heart racing and your mind begging for the next installment.

✨️ARC REVIEW ✨️

I had the privilege to receive an ARC of When Vengeance Bleeds Royal by L.Z. Cathcart.

It is refreshing to see a morally gray FMC instead of the often portraited damsel in distress who does neither know how beautiful she is, nor how to not die in said "distress" situation.
Lumira is a princess who lost her beloved sister recently. While she tries to get past her grief, she knows that her sister did not die the way the court claims.
Distrust between the different courts of the kingdom and her own family just grows when more people dissappear.
She might be a princess, but a smart one, cunning, connected and hell bent to find the killer of her sister and the ones behind threatening her life as well.
The MMC takes in this book more the part of a side character. For now. He follows her like a shadow, sometimes to help, sometimes to hinder her.
I am sure we will see a lot more when the story of a rebel princess on her path to truth and vengeance continuous in book two.

I just finished this book and wow! I’m a huge fan of a sassy FMC and a morally grey shadow daddy, but throw in the mysterious murder to solve and this book had me hooked from start to finish! I loved the world building and the magic system is super unique. Make sure you start this book on a day when you have time to read, because once you pick it up, you won’t be able to put it down!

I’ll be honest, it started slow but after the first few chapters it picked up. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Lumira. She’s determined to get revenge for the death of her beloved sister. I can’t believe I have to wait until next fall for the sequel. I hope I don’t forget about it. It’s a very intriguing story. Great character development and world building. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to read the ARC for this book.

Lumira, the FMC, is fierce and untamed and a force to be reckoned with. The storyline immediately jumps into a world full of magic, creatures, and magical objects as well as a power struggle between multiple characters. The MMC is mysterious and we know just as much about him as Lumira knows. Overall good storyline, some slower points throughout the book but that’s to be expected with as much world building is needed for the fantasy setting. I look forward to book 2!

4 ⭐️ This was a goooooooood one! I had a really great time reading When Vengeance Bleeds Royal. Right off the bat, I was drawn in and intrigued. There was a lot of mystery in the beginning that had me turning the pages and not wanting to put the book down.

This slow burn dark fantasy romance definitely stood out and felt different than a lot of the other books in the genre. I loved the high stakes and action throughout the story. I really enjoyed the tension between the main characters. I thought that the author did an amazing job with creating the world while keeping the story interesting and perfectly paced. I would absolutely recommend this book!

✨ARC REVIEW✨

If you love a good Shadow Daddy you’ll love this Shadow Baddie, Lumira! If you love a good puzzle and shady political drama then this slow burn dark fantasy is totally for you.

World building - 5/5
Plot development - 5/5
Pacing - 5/5
Writing style - 4/5*

*Personally, I’m a fan of this authors writing style. The abundance of metaphor gives it a very poetic feel, but I could see how that may be unappealing to some readers who may look for more dialogue or struggle visualizing
**I’m also rolling in a note here about three specific words that were repeated heavily (silk, steel, memory.) The over usage didn’t hurt anything, but I don’t necessarily think it helped either

When Vengeance Bleeds Royal by L.Z. Cathcart is a dark, slow-burn fantasy that immediately stands out in the romantasy genre. From the very first page, the story pulls you into a world full of intrigue, forbidden magic, secret societies, and political deception. If you love a good “Shadow Daddy,” you’ll definitely love this “Shadow Baddie,” Lumira—she’s morally grey, cunning, and utterly fascinating. Her complexity drives the story, and watching her navigate a world of lies, betrayal, and shifting loyalties is utterly compelling.

The romance in this book is slow-burn perfection. The male lead, shadowy and mysterious, complements Lumira perfectly, creating tension and chemistry that feels natural rather than forced. What I loved most is that the romance doesn’t overshadow the story—it’s intertwined with political drama, magical intrigue, and moral dilemmas, making every interaction meaningful and layered.

The depth of emotion in this book is remarkable. Lumira’s moral ambiguity, her choices, and her quest for vengeance give the story weight and substance. The world-building is rich and immersive, with secret societies, dark magic, and conspiracies that keep the reader constantly guessing. Every twist and revelation adds to the tension, making it impossible to put the book down.

The writing itself is beautiful, balancing evocative prose with high-stakes action and clever plotting. Cathcart does an excellent job of maintaining suspense while exploring complex themes such as power, morality, and survival. Even though the story is full of puzzles, schemes, and dark politics, the characters remain relatable and grounded, which makes the stakes feel real.

Overall, When Vengeance Bleeds Royal is a thrilling, emotionally charged fantasy that delivers on both romance and intrigue. It’s not your typical romantasy—it’s darker, more intricate, and more morally complex. This book earns a solid four stars for its layered characters, slow-burn tension, and richly imagined world. I can’t wait to read it again and see where Cathcart takes Lumira’s story next.

When Vengeance Bleeds Royal is a fantasy filled with political intrigue, tension, divine magic, and a fierce FMC who will burn down a kingdom to avenge her sister.

Lumira is the kind of heroine I crave in fantasy. She's morally grey (a refreshing change), cunning, angry, and beautifully flawed. She was bred for royalty, taught to play the game, and raised within institutions that shaped (and tried to control) her. But after her sister Emberly’s murder, she’s done being a pawn. Her grief becomes a weapon; her silence a shield, and her vengeance a fire no one can contain. I loved how determined, calculating, and resilient she is, especially when others underestimate her or try to pull her back into the mold she’s outgrown.

I really enjoyed watching Lumira’s evolution. She learns from her mistakes, adapts, and pushes forward. Her flaws make her human; her rage makes her powerful. She’s a reminder of the strength women hold beneath the surface and how lethal we can be when pushed too far. (Love the feminine rage!)

Then there’s the Shadowspire guard. A man who sees too much and knows even more. There’s tension, chemistry, and a slow-burn that doesn’t disappoint.

Aspects I loved:
- Morally grey heroine
- Slow-burn tension with a shadowy MMC
- Political intrigue
- Ancient gods and magical artifacts
- Revenge and feminine rage

Overall, the book is well done and well-paced, as the mystery unfolds piece by piece. The story held my interest as Lumira uncovered lies, alliances, and betrayals buried beneath her kingdom. I will definitely read book 2 and hope to see evolution of the romantic side of the plot, as well.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of When Vengeance Bleeds Royal. The book's premise-a morally gray heroine, Lumira Kyrvayne, vowing vengeance for her sister's murder and getting dragged into a game involving imprisoned gods and cursed artifacts is phenomenal. Fans of authors like Carissa Broadbent and Sarah J. Maas will find the dark, political, and brutal world of Cyrathea instantly appealing.
What this book excels at is creating an atmosphere of forbidden desire and palpable tension. The slow-burn obsession between Lumira and the enigmatic, hooded Shadowspire guard who should be her enemy is a major strength.
However, the debut novel suffers from some issues that prevented me from giving it a higher rating. Like some other fantasy debuts, the first half felt quite slow as it focused heavily on building the foundation of the world and the complicated court politics. While the world-building is intricate, it occasionally caused the plot momentum to stall. I also wished for deeper development of some of the secondary characters; at times, the heroine's constant internal conflict and the complex political machinations felt a bit murky and overly drawn out before the plot kicked into high gear.
Overall, it’s a solid start to a promising new dark fantasy romance series. The core concepts, the morally gray heroine, and the slow-burn enemies-to-lovers dynamic are fantastic, but be prepared for a slow initial build.

3.5 Stars rounded up.

Thank you LZ for the Arc in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the idea of Lumira being a smart, badass FMC, who learns to fight and starts a spy network. And while she had been doing these things for years before we met her in the book, the feeling the book gave me was that everyone thinks she is a sham, or a hothead..they see through her and do not take her seriously. She is constantly "donning a mask" so people can't read her, and every single person is able to see through it the entire time. It was frustrating that in many cases, she was simply shown to be steps behind everyone, thinking she was outsmarting people only to find out that she was far behind in the game at play.

-Her brother who she thinks is just into politics knows so much but she cant and wont consider him an ally despite him giving her clues to find the answers she seeks.
-Her sister's lover and their mutual friend know way more about things.
-Emberly (the sister) Lumira is avenging kept Lumira in the dark even when giving her clues- because everyone says Lumira is a hot head who doesn't think.
-At some point Lumira is working to outsmart her mother, and yet Thara sees through that.

I thoroughly enjoy the scenes between the MMC and Lumira. The history they shared- including that she and us the reader have no clue who he is, what his motives are, or his name...I love when readers get to learn beside the MC.

I did also enjoy that despite what I listed above, Lumira accepted her faults and strives to do better in her revenge

This is my ARC review for When Vengeance Bleeds Royal by L.Z. Cathcart. Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review this advance copy!

Lumira's sister has been murdered, and she is laser-focused on finding out who is responsible. Our FMC is met with lies, secrets, and manipulation from those closest to her every step of the way, but Lumira refuses to give up. She finds an unlikely ally in the shadowy guard she had an "encounter" with a couple of years before her sister's death.

When Vengeance Bleeds Royal combines all the pieces of a great fantasy. There's court intrigue, a morally grey FMC, a shadowy antihero, imprisoned gods, and unique magic. My only disappointment was that there was not more interaction with Kalum throughout the book. And I think his best line comes near the end of the book. But, being that this is the first book in a series, I'm hopeful we'll see more of him and their story progress! I'm looking forward to the next book!
