Darling Annie

Rate this book
Forty-eight hours after Kellian York arrives in Loving, Texas, the brothel he inherited is reduced to smoldering ashes. The Legion for Decency, an eccentric group of busybodies determined to rid the town of drinking, gambling, and "loose women," is only too happy to take credit for the torching. Kellian is determined to make them pay -- and who better than the group's stiff-necked spinster leader, Annie Muldoon? But the beautiful, barefoot girl is not the Annie Muldoon Kell expected.

Too charitable for her own good, Annie allows Kell and his "soiled doves" to take up residence in her boarding house. Secretly, however, she plans to set them on the path of righteousness. And then they fell in love... Annie soon realizes she's made the biggest mistake of her life. Her friends side against her, accidents plague the effort to rebuild the brothel, worst of all, the sinfully tempting Kell York begins to haunt her thoughts day and night.

This was a fun, light Western historical romance. I'm only giving it three stars because I think a lot more could have been done with the secondary characters. There were numerous background romances going on but lip service given to them.

Someone wants Kell and his "soiled doves" run out of town. At first Kell thinks it's Annie but changes his mind. That's lucky because he can't keep his mind or hands off her. Annie's a righteous woman but Kell breaks down all her defences and her passionate nature emerges. Kell, on the other hand, is a freedom loving roamer, brought to the town of Loving due to an inheritance from his brother: a saloon with responsibilities. Annie is breaking down his barriers.

The sexual tension radiates off the pages and their banter is well written.

The book, unfortunately, has numerous editing errors (typos) and the title should be "Darlin' Annie", since Kell calls her "Darlin'" throughout the book.

Darling Annie by Raine Cantrell

A funny and easy read.

The description of the book I am listing below is from the back jacket of the book. I'm adding it because I believe the one on the Goodreads page does not depict this story.

IT WAS FURY AT FIRST SIGHT
Forty-eight hours after Kellian York arrives in Loving, Texas, the brothel he inherited is reduced to smoldering ashes. The Legion for Decency, an eccentric group of busybodies determined to rid the town of drinking, gambling, and "loose women," is only too happy to take credit for the torching. Kellian is determined to make them pay—and who better than the group's stiff-necked spinster leader, Annie Muldoon? But the beautiful, barefoot girl is not the Annie Muldoon Kell expected. Too charitable for her own good, Annie allows Kell and his "soiled doves" to take up residence in her boarding house. Secretly, however, she plans to set them on the path to righteousness...

AND THEN THEY FELL IN LOVE
Annie soon realizes she's made the biggest mistake of her life. Her friends side against her and accidents plague the effort to rebuild the brothel—worst of all, the sinfully tempting Kellian York begins to haunt her thoughts day and night, as he coaxes free the passionate nature she's tried to hard to hid. Annie can't tell if he wants to torture her or seduce her, but she decides two can play that game. Learning the tricks of the trade from a house full of "daughters of joy," she sets out to teach Mr. York a thing or two. But what Kell and Annie discover is that "good" isn't always virtuous, and "bad" can be ever so wonderful...
