Spencer & Reid Mysteries #4

Cloaked in Deception

Rate this book
When masked men storm a charity dinner for the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage, Leonora Spencer and Detective Inspector Jasper Reid are among the many guests forced to witness the pandemonium—and a brutal murder.

Although she is shaken by the apparent robbery gone wrong, Leo insists on helping Jasper and the Criminal Investigation Department at Scotland Yard by tapping her photographic memory for clues. But the pieces aren’t adding up, and in her resolve to find answers, the risks Leo takes leave Jasper questioning his decision to assign her an unofficial role in the investigation.

After an old letter found on the victim points to the mysterious death of an infant at the charity orphanage over a decade before, a complex web of deceit and conspiracy begins to emerge. And when another child is targeted, Leo and Jasper realize they have no choice but to confront a killer set on vengeance.

Cloaked in Deception is the fourth book in Cara Devlin’s new romantic historical mystery series set in Victorian London. The Spencer & Reid Mysteries are perfect for fans of PBS Masterpiece Mystery’s Miss Scarlet & the Duke, and readers of Irina Shapiro, Andrea Penrose, and C.S. Harris.

Cara Devlin is currently one of my favorite authors of Victorian Detective stories. I enjoy her plotting and character development. I have read all books in this series in order written. This was not my favorite, and I rate it 3.5*. I found the first 30% slower moving and was working out how to advance the main characters becoming a couple along with clue hunting. Other reviewers enjoyed this part so it maybe a case of me not the author. I thought the mystery was well done and different than other books I have read. (I do have a few quibbles with how Leo could figure out some characteristics...but that is me not the plot). The latter part of the book really picked up, grabbed me and held me. I look forward to book #5 and am rounding up and giving the book a 4*.

One Liner: Keep going!

Leonora Spencer and Detective Inspector Jasper Reid are among the guests at the charity dinner for the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage when a masked gang attacks the event, resulting in a brutal murder.

Leo is determined to help Jasper, and he is determined to keep her safe. When they find a clue that leads them to a past event, Leo and Jasper have to confront the killer before it is too late.

The story comes in Leo and Jasper’s third-person POVs.

My Thoughts:

We are in the fourth book of the series. While there is enough information to make this a standalone, I recommend starting with the first book. It’s worth the time.

The story starts a month after the previous book ends. There seems to be a faint hope for the FMC (career-wise), though we’ll know for sure in the next book or the last one.

The slow burn is still slow, but the burn has upped the heat a little bit. I like it! Good to see steady progress in the right direction.

The mystery is intriguing and well-executed. It has a few twists and reveals that align with the plotting and fit nicely into each slot. I could guess most of it, though in a different way.

Of course, the FMC has a penchant for getting into danger, and this book is no exception. Thankfully, she also has enough brain to keep herself alive somehow. This helps.

The pacing is moderate, but it sustains the same momentum from start to finish. Even with the internal monologue and thoughts, the intensity doesn’t dip. It doesn’t feel bored or dragging at any point.

The ending has laid the foundation for a showdown, which I think will happen in the last book (6th). Bring it on!

Book #5 is scheduled for Jan 2026, and I’m counting days already!

To summarize, Cloaked in Deception is a solid mystery and a great continuation to the series. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

My thanks to the author for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

This series continues to be so enjoyable.

Love Leo and Jasper, but the burn is so sloooow. Can’t wait for the next one and I’m so happy to be part of this arc team. Cara Devlin is a gem.

Happy Pub Day to Leo and Jasper!

The mystery in this one was very twisted, and I enjoyed trying to solve it. Some of my theories were correct, but I was wrong about the killer. Oh well, can't always be right.

This would be excellent book club material: there are plenty of layers, and several very complex characters who would make great subjects for discussion. I was also excited to see characters from previous books, and I’m curious how their stories will unfold as the series continues.

However, mystery aside, my favorite part of this series is the slow-burn romance between Leo and Jasper. It’s very slow, but it’s so good! Not much actually happens in this book, but you can really feel the tension 😏. I also love that there’s no miscommunication between them, even though there was a moment when I expected it. And it’s so cute that Jasper gets jealous 🤭.

Overall, it was a great read, and I can’t wait for the next one!

Thanks to the author for the arc. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Yesss, my arc is here, can’t wait to dive into this one. I missed you, Leo and Jasper 🥹❤️

...just finished the book this morning (around 5.30 AM). I fell asleep thinking about this book. And I woke up around 4:30 AM thinking about this book and I couldn't fall back to sleep because I NEEDED TO KNOW. The mystery? Kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering. The relationship between Leo & Jasper? Don't get me started on this... but also, I really need to talk about this!
Cara Devlin not only knows how to do a great mystery, she knows how to handle a superb "slowburn". She clearly understands that "slowburn" doesn't have to rhyme with "give only crumbs to the readers". In this book, the passion-o-meter increases significantly between Leo and Jasper, they acknowledge their feelings and the longing is there, with heated exchanges, passionate kissing, lips staring... just wow.
I was a bit afraid they would go down the "Miss Scarlet and The Duke" route and would say "can't be together because Scotland Yard blablablah" and it even crossed my mind (because of some event in the book) "please don't make Jasper move to NYC (fangirl cries😭) but nope. Cara Devlin doesn't shy away from complicated plots and feelings! Her characters stay true to who they are and she doesn't change their personality to suit the plot. Jasper stays the protective companion he's always been to Leo, and Leo stays her daring, courageous self!
i could go on and on, write pages about how much I liked this book. Cara Devlin might have created the perfect historical mystery romance series: I gave five stars to the first book and it just keeps getting better and better. I really like that each book has a new mystery but there's always a continuity in the relationships and Leo and Jasper's past.
...and once again, the ending will leave you gasping and wanting more!

So much happens here!

Detective Inspector Jasper Reid and Leonora Spencer are separately attending an annual benefit dinner for the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage at the home of Sir Eamon Giles. Dinner has just started when masked robbers break in, steal all the valuables, and in what seems like an intentional action, shoot and kill the woman seated next to Leonora. They then take Leo as a hostage. Jasper’s blood runs cold. What will become of Leonora?
The woman whose been murdered is a Mrs Seabright. She had been one of the original charity cases. Her husband had been killed whilst on duty. Mrs Seabright’s children had been eligible to be sent to the orphanage.
The links between the dinner, the orphanage and the killing only become apparent after an arduous and complex investigation by Leo and Jasper.
Leonora’s Uncle Claude can no longer perform autopsies. The current doctor, nephew to Sir Giles, has seen Leonora’s worth and hopes to keep her working for the morgue.
Once again the novel ends on a precipice, urging us to discover what happens next in the lives of these two fascinating characters.

This is a very slow burn.

The mysteries are solved in each book, but there pasts hang over their heads in the background throughout the book. Though at the end of this book it is front and center.

Oh, I love this series so much...simply everything about it. I always look forward to seeing a new book drop because I KNOW that I'm going to have a great book to savor.

First and foremost, Devlin's characters (especially the mains Leo and Jasper) are so well-developed that I've seamlessly come to know and love them over the course of four books now. Their dark backstories, their vulnerabilities, their strengths have been written with such precision and care that as I read their stories, they feel real and care worthy to me...cheer worthy. I love Leo's spunk and intelligence. I love Jasper's gruffness and strive to rise above his past.

While Devlin's character development is excellent, her plotlines are every bit as entertaining and original as those characters. The location/time period feel visceral and spot on, and the plots are exciting and absorbing with just the right amount of danger and mayhem. It's always a pleasure not only to spend time with Leo and Jasper but to delve into their world and day-to-days.

And finally, Devlin has such a gift at pacing. I never feel any slow stretches or uneven spots in these books. Everything unfolds as it should, be it the action/denouement in the stories or the slow burn romance elements. They are just the right amount (at the right time) to keep me both on the edge of my seat and hopeful/swooning over the romance between these two characters. So well done.

If you love romantic historical mystery series, give this one a try. Start with Shadow at the Morgue as I feel it's best to follow this story from the beginning to get the full effect of how wonderfully and beautifully the series is unfolding.

My sincere thanks to the author for providing the free early arc of Cloaked in Deception for review. The opinions are strictly my own.

I swear, Cara Devlin keeps upping her game with each new book in the Spencer & Reid series. If you’re looking for a binge-worthy slow-burn detective mystery series, this is it!

After Courier of Death , I wasn’t sure how Devlin was going to top herself. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next installment, and the fourth book of the Spencer & Reid series does not disappoint!

This book opens with a bang, immediately drawing you into the action with a robbery at a dinner party gone wrong. But obviously, there is more to the events of the dinner party than meets the eye, with a thrilling murder mystery that takes you down a twisted path and unravels some unexpected secrets involving some secondary characters we’ve seen throughout the series. I won’t go into too many details on the specifics of the mystery, as it’s so fun to see all the pieces come together as Devlin weaves another masterful mystery that is expertly plotted.

Four books in, Leo and Jasper have really found their footing in their investigative working relationship. I absolutely loved seeing Jasper actively bring Leo into this investigation, albeit with some guardrails so that his position at Scotland Yard isn’t at risk. He knows she brings her own skills to his investigations that are incredibly useful, and I loved seeing him trust her to help on her own. Now, Jasper’s protective streak is still there, perhaps even more so as his feelings for Leo have evolved, but you can tell he trusts her more than ever and is willing to give a little. Meanwhile, Leo tries to tame her more reckless nature — she’s very much an act on instinct and worry about the consequences later type of person. I loved that Leo had a little voice of Jasper in her head telling her not to be reckless — and boy does she try, but I think trouble likes to find her. But Leo and Jasper are both the perfect working pair, as their strengths complement each other and they’re both innately driven by ensuring proper justice is delivered for the victims of the crimes they encounter.

Now on to the romance! And OH MY GOD, after the ending of the last book, I have been DYING to see where Devlin would take Jasper and Leo’s romantic relationship. The slow burn is SLOW BURNING. Devlin does a great job at bringing the romantic tension and slowly advancing Leo and Jasper’s relationship, but it doesn’t feel like a tease or like it’s being dragged out. Jasper and Leo still have a lot of complicated feelings to work through, given their shared past, but I am SO HAPPY to see them acknowledging that there is more to their relationship than just friendship. Devlin sprinkles in the perfect amount of little nuggets of joy between Leo and Jasper, including a few kisses (FINALLY!), to leave you feeling satisfied with how things are progressing, while also leaving you wanting more.

However, she had me WORRIED at the end. I’ve never been so stressed about potentially going on a dinner date, but I’m so glad Leo and Jasper are willing to forge ahead, potential risks be damned. The end of the book left me with a giddy smile on my face, even though I was also balancing the emotions of being very stressed the last few chapters leading up to the end, due to a shockingly unexpected visit from someone in Jasper’s past.

While this book was a bit lighter on some of the overarching story arcs involving Jasper and Leo’s past and the murder of Leo’s family, I’m so excited to see where Devlin takes the next books. The stakes seem like they’re about to be even higher for Jasper and Leo, and I’m eager to see how Devlin plays with that!

After staying up until 3 am to finish this, I am already anxiously counting down the days until Tears for the Forsaken comes out, as I cannot wait to see what Devlin has in store for Leo and Jasper next. I am genuinely obsessed with this and am dreading the day this series is over, as I adore it so much! I hope we get many more adventures with Leo and Jasper before that day comes. If you like Miss Scarlet & the Duke, Veronica Speedwell, or the Lady Sherlock series, you will LOVE this series, and I cannot recommend you pick them up enough!

Thank you to BookSirens for the ARC! All thoughts, ideas, and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This is the fourth book in the excellent Spencer and Reid series. I am a big fan of Cara Devlin. I enjoy reading her books so I’ve been excited to read this new series of hers.

I was disappointed to see that it’s been 4 whole weeks since they kissed at the end of the last book! That means they haven’t seen each other in weeks, which is a long time in a brand new relationship. I was worried that maybe they were not going to talk ever again after the revelations in the last book.

I’m was so glad that Leo can stay in the morgue as a secretary. It’s really nice that she and Connor are getting along better. I like how he listens to her and respects her. I had been worried that he would be dismissive of her like the first mortuary assistant had been.

The story starts off with a bang with lots of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged.

Leo sure has courage to confess to murder as a strategy, I love her unorthodox methods and thinking. Plus she’s so clever and quick thinking, she makes most of the cops look slow and stupid.

I was surprised and pleased to hear Coughlan is going to allow Leo to assist Jasper to some extent.

Now Jasper has made his feelings clear to Leo, and now Leo knows he loves her (via Constance of all people!), hopefully we will see a much bigger development in their romance in the next book.

I was surprised by the Andrew Carter plot twist. I was so afraid Jasper would go to America (without Leo) but it looks like he’s going to stay and deal with Carter while he pursues a relationship with Leo.

I am dying to know what’s going to happen next. The next book isn’t out until Jan 2026 which is a loooong time to wait!

A difficult genre to tackle - telling a story in today's culture, but setting the characters in a totally different historic period. Cara Devlin avoids the pitfalls of using today's understandings of cultural interactions imposed on an older culture. I have read all four of these and the stories are engaging, done well, and do not over-dramatize moments that would be alarming in today's culture, but were considered the "norm" in a previous era of history.

Another incredible addition to a favorite series!

The opening scene of this book was so suspenseful - Leo and Jasper are attending a dinner party where a gang of thieves robs attendees, kills the woman seated next to Leo, and takes Leo hostage. Thankfully, Leo is released, but there’s no way Jasper can keep her out of the ensuing investigation when she’s a witness!

The mystery deals with an orphanage supposed by the police and children who were cared for there. It’s a little bit different from the standard baby broker story you see in many books set during this time, which made it interesting.

Of course, the series-long relationship arc gets plenty of time! Leo and Jasper have been distant in the weeks since the end of the last book (which had a kick-your-heels-with-delight moment). Cara Devlin doesn’t let miscommunication exist for long in her books (thank goodness, these are adults, after all) and we get some exciting developments.

I didn’t think anything could top Ashley and Hugh from Devlin’s last series, but Leo and Jasper have worked their way into my heart!

This latest book of the Spencer and Reid Mysteries is as good, if not better, as the prior three. Although these books could be read as standalones, you should read them in order or you will not understand the subplots or some of the characters and their associations with Leo and Jasper. The author gives amazing descriptions of life in Victorian London, from the perspective of the wealthy and the downtrodden.

What an intriguing chapter in the story of Leo and Jasper! The book was hard to put down. Leo just can't help herself. No matter how many times she is told to stay away from Jasper's work, she always decides her participation is justified. It was fun watching them move closer in their personal relationship, but oh, that ending!

Another fantastic, slow, burning mystery from Cara Devlin that builds to an exciting, crescendo! I don’t know how she keeps all these balls in the air when she’s writing, but I’m glad she does! In this story, Leo is at a fundraiser for the police officers widows and orphans home when a robbery takes place, and a woman is killed. Events spiral out of control as the identity of the woman is revealed and her relationship with Jasper’s former lady friend Constance’s family becomes dangerous. Twists and turns and red herrings!! Slow burn romance. (Finally! 💕)

This author KNOWS how to write a mystery! Leo and Jasper are at it again, though Jasper would love to keep Leo out of it, not only for her safety, but because his superiors are ranting about her. I adored how he responded at the dinner party and the resulting fiasco. It was also funny that Leo could HEAR Jasper in her thoughts when she knew what she was doing was wrong. Trying to figure out all the ins and out of this plot were very interesting and seeing the villain finally revealed was wonderfully done. I loved how Leo and Jaspe’s relationship has blossomed somewhat and the last chapter made me upset. The next story looks to be a hard one for them to recover from, but if anyone can do it-this author can! Quite a roller coaster ride, this one!

Thanks to the author for a copy of this novel and this is my freely given opinion.

Wonderful story - it combines an exciting murder mystery with the continued tension of the tumultuous relationship between Leonora Spencer, and Jasper Reid, as well as the drama of both their pasts. It drives me a bit crazy that I have to wait for the next installment of their story because it seems like they try take a tentative step forward together, they are forced several steps back, and there are so many factors against them.

In this story, Leo and Jasper have stayed away from each other for several weeks, after their last meeting which ended in a passionate kiss, with Jasper and Leonora appearing to start to move past her stunning realization about his involvement in her past and the death of her family, and both starting to acknowledge that they have an attraction for each other, but not yet sure what to do about it.

Now Jasper is afraid too much time has gone by, and the next time they see each other is at gala to raise funds for a police orphanage, at the chief coroners home. Jasper finds himself becoming jealous when he sees Leonora there, accompanying the new coroner she is working with, Conner Quinn. He and Leonora are further shaken when the fete is interrupted as they sit down to dinner by a robbery, and things take a brutal turn when one of the robbers murders one of the guests and they escape, taking Leo as a hostage.

Luckily Leo was eventually released and forced to make her way home. But the investigation opens up past secrets involving the orphanage and the Hayes family - the family of Jaspers' good friend, and the woman he was formerly courting before breaking things off in light of his feelings for Leo. Jasper has further difficulties as he discovers that he is being spied upon at work, especially Leos' involvement with him, and he still finds himself involving her in his investigations. He also finds himself being followed as well, by a mysterious man.

Leo is still conflicted by her feelings for Jasper, and their conflicted past. She also faces pressure as well, as her uncle Claude has lost his position at the morgue, and they face added financial hardship, as well as dealing with her aunt's worsening dementia. But Leo cannot help but want to aid in the investigation, especially considering how close it hits to home, and her photographic memory is able to make connections between the robbery, murder, her kidnappers, and other crimes that occur that are found to be connected. She is given impetus when Jasper appears to encourage her involvement.

But as they grow closer, more about their past threatens their present, and as Jasper and Leo start to acknowledge their feelings for each other, they also grow to fear what they could lose as they each face risk to further their investigations.

Delicious story with wonderful characters and developing situations that leave me wanting more, and I cannot wait to see where they go in their future, both professionally and personally, and what they will do to evade or overcome their pasts.

Cara Devlin defines Un-put-downable!

The story begins in a big way, with a murder, a hostage situation, and emotional tension between Jasper and Leo, all within the first two chapters.

The mystery plot in this book was one of Cara Devlin’s best yet. Just when I thought I had it figured out, along came a big twist. There are no wasted words or scenes—the action continually moves forward from scene to scene, page to page, chapter to chapter. Each one leads to the next revelation, the next clue, the next suspect in the case. Cara Devlin is a master at crafting a story—displays of family photos provide a subtle throughline at key moments in the story, including the final emotional scene between Jasper and Leo.

Speaking of Jasper and Leo, their slow-burn romance does not get bogged down by a “third act break-up” or one-step-forward/two-steps-back caused by a misunderstanding that goes on for pages and pages when it could be solved by a conversation. Cara Devlin’s characters have the difficult conversations and move forward. And the challenges they face are real--rather than concocted solely to drag out the story--and make you wonder how they will ever be resolved. I was in tears reading the final two chapters as Jasper’s old life finally comes home to roost in a big and emotional way. And Leo’s response—totally on-brand with the stubborn, fearless woman we have come to know and love in this series!

But amidst the mystery and romance are touches of humor—I found myself smiling or even laughing out loud at certain thoughts or comments made by different characters. Sergent Lewis is my new favorite sidekick! I’m loving the development of his work relationship/friendship with Jasper.

Cloaked in Deception is another excellent installment to this great series. Cara Devlin grabs our attention immediately with the beginning, a robbery at a charity dinner for the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage, a guest killed and Leonora taken by the culprits. Oh my, I could not put this book down!! There is so much to unravel, was the guest specifically targeted, who are the culprits, was it just a robbery gone bad? Jasper, of course, is worried about Leo and wants to go after her. Leo decides to "help" Jasper find the robbers.

This book has so much going for it, a great plot ( I loved how the author made all those connections), and of course, the slow- burn romance between Leo and Jasper. The descriptions of Victorian London are so well done that I could picture it in my mind.

With this fourth book, Leo and Jasper are well developed. I enjoyed seeing that Conner, the new Coroner, appreciated that Leo was smart and a vital asset to the job and was working to let her keep her position.

The author mentions Leo and Jasper's previous cases in passing, but this series needs to be read in order. There is so much back story for each character and of course, the romantic aspect. This was fast paced and suspenseful, a few red herrings kept me guessing. The cliff hanger at the end has me so excited for the next book, Tears for the Forsaken. I can't wait until January!

This was my favorite of the Leo and Jasper (really Spencer and Reid) series so far! I do think it's very helpful to have read the previous installments prior to reading this one as there is quite a bit of background events and characters that come up through the story.

The mystery starts with a robbery and murder at a charity event that both Leo and Jasper are attending (not together…). Leo gets taken hostage by the murderous gang so they can escape and of course her photographic memory becomes a tool to help Jasper and the police solve the crime.

It takes a while to figure out what's going on with the mystery; there are many twists and turns. Jasper gets flack from his department and boss for continuing to involve Leo but she turns out to be indispensable to solving the crime and actually saving the day.

The romance is super slow burn so much so that I find myself rooting for the couple and for the romance to move along a bit more quickly but there is always the promise of more in the future even though it's going to be difficult as their pasts catch up to them.

I really loved this book and the entire series so far! I only wish the next edition was out.

Well done, another fantastic story about Jasper and Leonora. This story keeps you on the edge of your seat just wanting more from these two dynamic characters. The characters both bad and good have sparks, fireworks to burn the pages . Has lots of action, kidnappings, chemistry, murder, mystery, emotions and twists. So much packed into this story. Jasper and Leonora are at a fund raiser which neither want to be at. Then robbers break in and take the jewels from the women. One lady is sitting next to Leo when she is killed and Leo is taken. She is turned loose after a ride in a carriage. With her memory she is able to give Jasper this info after she walks back for help. Jasper and other detectives are looking for her. She is able to give them the description of them , the carriage and what she overhears. Then starts the hunt for the killer and the robbers. Has lots of twists and spins to this story, secrets are found out. Has you losing sleep over who really did it and why. At the end along comes Jasper's past to haunt him - Andrew Carter. Again there should be another fabulous story waiting for the readers. Can't wait. Would strongly recommend to everyone this story and the series.

I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.

OMG! From the first page to the last I was holding my breath waiting to see what was going to happen. So much was covered in Cloaked in Deception! I'm so grateful to have found the Spencer and Reid series through BookSirens!

To begin, the character development is outstanding! Leo and Jasper are excellent, as always. I love how each book takes place a few months after the previous one. I will say, this series leans heavily on the mystery side of cozy mystery, rather dark compared to some, but thoroughly enjoyable.

The first chapter sets the tone for the book, eliciting a sense of unknown, allowing the reader to become engulfed in the story. The fact Leo is headstrong and independent is shown even more in this book. Her fearlessness and self understanding are expertly shown. Jasper is excellent too, I love the fact he is irritable and short fused, but is always there for Leo. The way Leo and Jasper work together is so perfect, like a second language that only they speak.

The story that the series is building on is marvelous! I don't want to leave any spoilers, so I'll leave it at that, but everything is starting to come back around; dormant stories and fears are realized. I cannot wait for the next book!

Happy reading! 📖

Efficacious, suspenseful mystery with the underlying thread of romance. The personal stories and the romance have an undercurrent of danger and suspicion in itself that help bridging the slower moments in the investigation and that will no doubt carry the series over several more of future installments. The MCs are two complex and not easy characters that will probably eventually find their common ground to the investigative HEA.

While Jasper and Leo continue to explore their professional and personal relationships other character development is put on hold. Although, Oliver found a way back to the plot. This time in a more mature and paced role.

On the economics side of the suspense: Leo’s job prospect although not very secure yet, seem to have a positive outlook. Nevertheless, the issue with the taxes of Jasper’s house is still very much in the air. So, here as well, the suspense is thickening.

For the full effect, read the previous installments. Otherwise, enjoy!

When masked men storm a charity dinner for the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage, Leonora Spencer and Detective Inspector Jasper Reid are among the many guests forced to witness the pandemonium and a brutal murder, then Leo is taken hostage. Luckily she is released unharmed but is shaken by the apparent robbery gone wrong, she insists on helping Jasper.
The fourth book in this brilliant series & another unputdownable page turner. I love Jasper & Leo, the chemistry between them sizzles but it’s also the dynamics between them whilst working together that’s the icing on the cake. The case is intriguing & what starts as a robbery soon turns into something darker & as the couple gradually reveal the truth, the robbery was not what it seemed. Jasper & Leo’s relationship is starting to move forward when Jasper learns who’s been following him. Beautifully written with wonderful characters, a fast paced story & an ending that makes me want the next book now
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

I love this series. I have introduced Cara Devlin to several of my bookclubs, and even those who have never read historical mysteries have continued to read them.
Leonora Spencer is quite the character, a woman who works in a morgue, but so much more. She has a photographic memory which certainly comes in handy when she helps Detective Jasper Reid of Scotland Yard solve cases.
We have learned quite a bit about their backgrounds in the first 3 books, and they have FINALLY admitted their attraction for each other.
This is a particularly good mystery with several red herrings, but Leo uses her incredible memory to find many clues.
She is put in jeopardy several times, which accelerate Jasper's realizations. As Leo helps Jasper's former girlfriend's family, the animosity lessens and she tells Leo that Jason loves Leo. So cute really, especially as it happens in the morgue
So much to ponder for the next book. Will Leo finally get hired and paid for being a morgue assistant? Will she be able to continue helping Scotland Yard? We will have to wait until JANUARY to see.
Thanks to Netgalley, the author and book funnel for the EARC. This review is my honest opinion.

I’ve been a fan of Cara’s writing since The Bow Street Dutchess series, and this new series is just as good.

Cara always writes a strong mystery and book 4 continues the story for Leo and Jasper brilliantly. I really enjoyed how characters from previous stories are intertwined to the mystery and how the outcome is always unexpected. I also love how Cara wraps up a mystery over a couple of chapters rather than in just the last one.

I was pleasantly surprised in book 4 how things move forward for Jasper and Leo, which feels so different to a lot of slow burn mysteries where nothing happens between the main characters or the romance is never there. I really didn’t expect where this story takes them, or the outcome. For me this makes Leo and Jaspers story stand out amongst other historical mystery couples and why new readers should give this book series a go.

The fourth in the Spencer and Reid series of murder mysteries with a touch of romance is again a gripping read. There is an original plot line but with several recurrent themes in the background. As Spencer and Reid attend a charity dinner, the meal is upended by a gang of thieves who then shoot one person at the table. Spencer is kidnapped to stop the gang being followed, so finds herself unwittingly involved in the murder investigation, much to the annoyance of Scotland Yard and Reid himself. Using her initiative she finds herself one step ahead of the investigative officers but owing to her impetuosity finds herself in need of assistance. The characters are well developed and familiar and the plot has a suitable number of red herrings and unexpected twists, making this another in the series that is well worth a read. Hugely enjoyable,

Cara Devlin has done it again with the latest installment in her thrilling Jasper and Leo series. Cloaked in Deception is another captivating chapter in the tangled, slow-burn relationship between two deeply compelling characters, and fans of the series won’t be disappointed.
What stands out most is Devlin’s gift for character development. She doesn’t just tell a story—she invites you into the minds and hearts of her protagonists. Jasper and Leo’s shared history is steeped in tension, longing, and a past that refuses to stay buried. Their connection crackles with chemistry, and you can’t help but root for them to finally break through the barriers standing in their way. While this book offered a few clever twists and satisfying reveals, I found the mystery slightly more straightforward than in previous installments. That said, the emotional weight carried by the characters more than made up for it. Devlin continues to deliver a strong balance between intrigue and romance, making this series an addictive read.
I’m already eager to see where Jasper and Leo’s journey takes them next.
