I invited her into my world—never knowing I was already in hers.
To some, my creation, ARGUS, is a weapon. To others, it's a safeguard.
The system sees all, finds every connection, leaves no secret buried.
Yet she found my blind spot.
I gave her everything—my bed, my secrets, my trust. The heart I'd buried under years of ambition and isolation.
Only to discover she didn't find me by accident. Former CIA. Investigating a deadly leak. Hired by shadows to hunt rumors that could destroy everything I've built.
Every kiss was a lie. Every vulnerable moment, a calculated move. She played me like a fucking mark, and I let her.
But the fire between us? That was real. And now that same fire might burn us both.
I've always been willing to pay any price to protect my creation. Now I'll pay any price to keep her. Even if it means becoming the monster they already think I am.
Only the Wicked is the first book in the sizzling Sinful State series, where elite operatives and ruthless billionaires discover that the deadliest game is the one played with the heart—and the only rule is that only the wicked win.

Welcome back to another audiobook review!!! Today we were talking about a book that i’m not read a lot of before this is kind of like a spy/espionage type romance book. And it is narrative by another first time MMC narrator for me with Scott Rose. He voices are MMC Rhodes MacMillan. Rhodes is a millionaire who has created this AI program that meant to be used for good and all these should not fall into the wrong hands because obviously we’ve seen what happens when an AI falls into the wrong hands looking at you, terminator and Terminator two. But Rose’s business partner Miles convinces him to take an overdue vacation which he does and that leads him to meeting Marie Hawkins character, Sydney Parker. Now Sydney is a former CIA operative who is working undercover to gather some Intel on a case that is very close to her heart, and I’m on the way if they begin working together and obviously for a romantic relationship and that’s all the premise and kind of info I won’t give you on the plot of the story cause obviously I don’t wanna give too much. Now, if you guys have watched my TikTok post from yesterday about another book it had Angelina Rocca as the voice narrator, and y’all heard the praise I gave her, what y’all may not have heard in that is that Marie Hawkins is actually one of my other top three narrators my top three are Lucy Rivers, Marie Hawkins and Angelina Rocca. And I love the authors love these three women as well because I feel like I’ve gotten a lot of Lucy rivers narrarted books from bluenose recently. But back to Marie, she is actually the first dark romance, female narrator I ever listened to because she was in the mindf*ck series, and that was my first dark romance series so from that point on I was hooked on Marie Hawkins. I think she has done amazing and absolutely everything she has done and the series that I love her in right now is dance with my demons series. I feel like whenever I listen to Marie she actually brings the characters that she narrates to life. They are no longer just these characters on pages, but to me, they are actually real life human beings. So if you have not listened to Marie Hawkins yet this is a great book to start!
This was a really good read but I struggled a little through it. I think maybe this was too much on the spy/espionage side than I’m used to. I do love that genre when it involves romance. But , it was heavier on the mystery /spy/suspense side which just didn’t capture my attention as much.
It was definitely still a good read. Especially if you love that kind of vibe. I loved how they incorporated AI and the dangers of it facing the world. That aspect was really well done and loved how it tied into everything. Especially with the current state of the world.
All in all it was good, just not for me. But if this type of book is your vibe then DEFINITELY pick it up and give it a try 💙
Thank you so much to Isabel Jolie for the opportunity to ARC read this book. 💙

Only The Wicked pulls you straight into a world of secrets, lies, and power plays, and I was hooked from page one. This is a story where ambition collides with desire, where nothing is what it seems, and where trust can be the deadliest gamble of all.
ARGUS, shadowy organizations, and a former CIA heroine make this feel cinematic, like you’re strapped into a high-stakes thriller that refuses to let go. Every kiss carried danger, every betrayal cut deep, and the chemistry? Explosive. Isabel Jolie balances the grit of espionage with the burn of romance so well, I couldn’t stop turning pages.
This is the kind of romantic suspense that makes you forget the outside world exists, fast-paced, edgy, and dangerously addictive. The perfect kickoff to a series I’ll be following closely.
I loved this. The pacing was fantastic, the characters complex and well developed, the story gripping - I was completely invested from the very first page. I loved both Rhodes and Sydney and was nervously on the edge of my seat hoping for a happy and beautiful ending for the pair. Isabel really delivered a fantastic story with plenty of steam, stress and suspense, and has introduced a host of fascinating and likeable characters who I hope we learn more of as this fabulous new series progresses.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Only the Wicked is an electrifying mix of espionage, deception, and dangerous desire that blurs the line between love and betrayal. Isabel Jolie wastes no time dropping you headfirst into a world of covert operations, corporate secrets, and emotional vulnerability. This story pulls you straight into a high-stakes world of secrets and subterfuge, where every look and every touch could be a lie. At times, the level of spy detail felt overwhelming like being dropped right into the middle of a complex operation without a map but ultimately, it heightened the tension and realism. You uncover every secret right alongside the characters, which makes the emotional payoff that much stronger. This was my first Isabel Jolie book, and I’m genuinely impressed by her sharp writing style, complex characters, and the emotional tension she weaves between every coded message and stolen glance. It’s a sophisticated, intense, and beautifully written story that grabs you from the first page and refuses to let go.
The Story
Rhodes is a billionaire tech genius, creator of ARGUS a surveillance system that sees everything, connects every secret, and leaves no place to hide. To him, it’s the ultimate safeguard. To others, it’s a weapon. Then he meets Sidney, a mysterious woman who disarms him in ways he never expected. What he doesn’t know is that she’s a former CIA operative sent to investigate a deadly leak connected to his creation. Their connection is immediate, magnetic, and impossible to ignore, but it’s also built on lies. Every kiss, every confession, every moment of trust none of it was supposed to be real. Yet somehow, it is. When the truth surfaces, both are forced to decide what’s worth saving: their mission, or each other.
What I Loved
✔️ The morally grey characters complex, powerful, and emotionally layered ✔️ The cinematic pacing and spy-thriller tone ✔️ The way romance and danger are perfectly intertwined ✔️ Sidney’s strength and intelligence paired with Rhodes’s intensity and control ✔️ Jolie’s writing taut, atmospheric, and addictive
🎧 Narration
Narrated in duet by Marie Hawkins and Scott Rose, this audiobook was a perfect casting choice. Both narrators brought their characters vividly to life with voices that were believable and beautifully suited to the tone of the story. Hawkins was outstanding as Sidney strong, intelligent, and fiercely independent while Rose embodied Rhodes with commanding presence and subtle vulnerability. Their chemistry was electric, and their performances added emotional depth to every tense, passionate, and revealing moment.
Tropes & Vibes
✔️ Spy/Espionage romance ✔️ Billionaire x ex-CIA operative ✔️ Enemies to lovers ✔️ Forbidden love ✔️ Dual POV ✔️ Power, secrets, and betrayal
Final Thoughts
Only the Wicked is an intelligent, slow-burning romantic thriller that delivers on every front suspense, seduction, and emotional depth. It’s a story about ambition and vulnerability colliding in spectacular fashion. Isabel Jolie proves she can write both heat and heart with equal skill, crafting a world that’s as dangerous as it is intoxicating. Even though it clearly sets up a wider series arc, this book stands confidently on its own. I’m already looking forward to uncovering what the next installment in the Sinful State series will bring.
Only The Wicked The Sinful State Series Book 1 By: Isabel Jolie Narrated by: Marie Hawkins, Scott Rose
This is my first Isabel Jolie book, and consider me impressed by her writing style and the amazing characters and storylines she created that are complex and multi-layered. A gripping romantic suspense that is intriguing, keeps you guessing and takes you to the edge of your seat, all while tugging at your heartstrings, too. Billionaire Rhodes MacMillan created an AI program to do good, a powerful program that should not get into the wrong hands, but that does not stop them from wanting a piece of it or trying to get in but the tech guru has safety and security measures in place. His partner, Miles, convinced him to take a long overdue vacation, and that is where he met her, Sidney Parker, while out hiking. The two hit it off, and what starts off as a vacation fling turns into something more, but it turns out not all is as it seems. Sidney is a former CIA, working undercover to gather intel, a case that is close to her heart because there may be a connection to her former job. It was great watching these two get to know each other, and despite her working on an assignment, her feelings were real, and so was their connection. When the truth comes out, he questions the validity of her feelings, but you can not fake that smoking hot chemistry between them. Jolie weaved a complex and might fine web, and I loved watching it unravel as all the pieces fell into place. There is never a dull moment in this cleverly plotted story, a story that has a perfect balance of drama, angst, mystery, betrayals, twists and turns, thrilling suspense and steamy romance. The world building and character growth and development are fantastic too. Isabel Jolie, thank you for this amazing story and the wild emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧And for the amazing casting and audiobook listen performed by two talented voice artists, Marie Hawkins and Scott Rose, who brought these characters to life perfectly. I loved how they took each role and made it their own, with voices that were fitting, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters to sound. Hawkins was fantastic as Sidney, and Rose was just as fantastic as Rhodes, each embodying their roles and showcasing their personalities perfectly, confident and fierce. Both were just as great performing the roles of the side/secondary characters too. They set the ideal tone for the story, conveyed all the characters’ emotions in their performance, making you feel them all. These entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to and their captivating performance rivets you to the story.
Audiobook Review: Produced by Blue Nose Audio Performed in duet by… ✨Marie Hawkins ✨Scott Rose

"Three days ago I was certain of my mission, of my target, and my purpose. Now I'm questioning everything except my attraction to a man who might be completely innocent and undeserving of an investigation."
"One wonders what Shakespeare would make of our modern Prometheuses, coding their way toward both salvation and damnation"
Isabel Jolie novels should come with a warning: You WILL stay up all night devouring this book. Charge your e-reader, make sure your next morning is free, and settle in for this ride.
This is a thrilling suspense centering around AI technology, the ethics of this tech, and the geopolitical implications of ownership and weaponization of this sensitive technology. Rhodes is the brilliant, flawed, and principled creator of ARGUS, an AI tool that he envisioned doing good in the world. Sydney is the former CIA - now shadow oversight group - operative hoping to discover who within ARGUS leaked sensitive information and caused multiple deaths. These two guarded and independent people discover an intense connection that goes beyond the bedroom as they maneuver through the closed-door world of DC and global politics hoping to discover who exactly is behind the selling of sensitive government information and exactly how far these people will go.
I love a good espionage/suspense/mystery, and so often romantic suspense novels have plot holes filled with spice. Not this book! Wowsers, I was gipped and turning pages like a woman possessed. Isabel Jolie crafts a tight and absorbing mystery that proves she is a master of the genre. Tangental characters are 3-dimensional and easily distinguishable from each other, which is hard to do with so many players. Rhodes and Sydney are deep and believable characters, with layers to them that make them so real I believe they are out there in the world. Their chemistry is off the charts, the spice is so spicy and sexy, and I am wanting more! Luckily, this is the first book of a new suspense series (The Sinful State Series). I am anxious to see more from the agents of KOAN and hopefully get another glimpse of Rhodes and Syd.
I loved this book. In today’s world of AI, information weaponization, deep fakes, ethics, and fear, Isabel Jolie’s book is timely as well as entertaining. The romance is absolutely absorbing and the mystery is crafted beautifully. Five Stars!
I received an advance review copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions are my own.

This was my first Isabel Jolie book, and let me just say: I get the hype now. Only the Wicked, the explosive opener to The Sinful State series, blends the heat of a billionaire romance with the sharp edge of a spy thriller. Think slow-burn meets high-stakes intrigue, with just enough tech, betrayal, and forbidden chemistry to keep you turning the pages late into the night.
We’re introduced to Sydney Parker, an ex-CIA operative now working undercover for a mysterious new agency. She’s sent to get close to Rhodes MacMillan, a brilliant, enigmatic tech billionaire whose cutting-edge AI has the government watching his every move. The catch? Rhodes doesn’t know he’s already at the center of a dangerous conspiracy, and Sydney is holding all the cards.
Their connection crackles with tension from the moment they meet. Every glance, every touch feels like it’s dancing on the edge of something explosive. And while the slow burn is deliciously drawn out, there were moments I wished for just a bit more action to match the emotional stakes. That said, when the heat kicks in? It burns 🥵.
Jolie’s writing shines when exploring the emotional complexity of two powerful, guarded people trying to figure out if what they’re building is real (or just another deception). And while this is clearly a setup for a wider series arc (with plenty more secrets to unravel), Only the Wicked stands strong on its own.
✔️ Billionaire romance ✔️ Spy thriller vibes ✔️ Age gap ✔️ Forbidden love ✔️ Tech intrigue ✔️ Secret identities ✔️ Scorching chemistry
This is a book for readers who love their romance with brains and bite. If you’re looking for something smart, sexy, and suspenseful, this one’s for you.
Huge thanks to Grey’s Promotions for the e-ARC, and congrats to Isabel Jolie on the release! I’ll definitely be diving into the next Sinful State book the second it drops.
such an intriguing read, i want to go put on my all black outfit and sleuth around like a spy now 🕵️♀️
at first, i had a bit of whiplash—it felt like we got dumped right into the middle of a story that had already been happening, and we were expected to understand immediately who all the players were and what the underlying machinations were. BUT, i ate crow, because this actually added such an interesting element to the story. you really felt the intrigue, the subterfuge that the characters were trying to uncover right along with them, and that heightened the experience of this infinitely.
i really enjoyed the romantic suspense element of this. i haven’t really dipped my toe into romantic suspense—even though i really should, i mean with the amount of true crime i consume i’m bound to love it—and i had a fantastic time with this foray into it. i’ll be going back and picking up Isabel Jolie’s backlist because if i always feel this ready to take on the world like a super spy after her books, i need to be reading them more.
something else that really brought a unique element that i appreciated was the weaving of mythology and sins throughout our story. it was done in such a way where you noticed that it was important to the characters, and you obviously knew that the myths and sins they were speaking about tied into what our characters were experiencing, but it wasn’t so in your face that you were going to be screaming “OKAY, I GET IT” by the end. plus, i grew up on greek myths, so it scratched that happy itch in my brain 🙂↕️
in kate’s keys, — ex-cia operative x tech ceo — they’re both lying to each other but not about the chemistry 🌶️ — politics and the global intelligence war — betrayal at every corner oh my god who can you trust in this world 8.5/10✨
thank you to grey’s promotions and isabel jolie for providing me with an e-arc for review 🫶
This is my first ever book by Isabel Jolie it started a new series for the author called the sinful state. This was a solid highly enjoyable four star read for me. Isabel Jolie writing and character development was spectacular and very central to this novel. The plot felt slightly slow to me but as a book with character narratives that kept me intriguing continuing to read and complete the read. Sydney is married to a man named Dorian, a marriage which is recent. An honest relationship is slowly built from what started out in a lie. What the lie is, you must read to find out. Complex elements are a part of this romance book. The characters of Sydney and Rhodes aren’t completely likely as individuals but as a pairing they are well suited. The definitely has a triangle which is a part of the plot however it not clear Sydney husband knows this fact or not. Sydney by the per fact she married is not fateful given her relationship with Rhodes Macmillan. Rhodes is the MMC but not husband to Sydney, but history exists which Sydney isn’t fully upfront about with some which is an element of the plot. Ropes which would draw readers to pick up Only the Wicked are : billionaire romance, strong heroine, vigilante, disguise,he falls first and protective hero. I highly recommend Only the wicked by Isabel Jolie. I do recommend going into the romance book with and open mind are we hear about don’t particularly see Sydney’s husband. The focus of the romance is Rhodes and Sydney’s history and the romance that builds up through out the story. We do learn history of both our main characters are the plot slow builds.
Before I dive into any story, my usual routine has always been reading the description and making sure the tropes aligned with what I typically go for. Yet, with this story, I decided to go in blind only knowing the title. This was the best decision I’ve ever made because it added to the constant surprises throughout this story. The intensity, secrets, lies, and espionage was formed together so intricately that it made me feel like this was a movie! The writing of this story is so authentic, detailed, and relatable to similar concepts happening currently in our world. Then when the romance is mixed in it’s like a whole new ball game making it a more fascinating story since it constantly has you on your toes. You keep wondering how Sydney and Rhodes will navigate there situation when their hearts get involved especially when each have their own objective of spying for info and keeping details close to the cuff. The two characters are equally intelligent and have strong personalities which make for an intriguing plot! So the question I leave you with is will only one survive or both?! For the audiobook Marie Hawkins and Scott Rose’s performances were simply brilliant! When these two commit they give everything they have to make the story and their characters believable down to the very last detail. The flow of their narration was seamless and each played off each other so effortlessly! Marie and Scott are definitely worth listening to again and again! Thank you Blue Nose Audio and Isabel Jolie for this amazing ALC opportunity!!!
Only The Wicked is book 1 in the Sinful State Series by Isabel Jolie was my first read by this author and I was not disappointed at all! This was the first book in this series and it was a great start to a new series! I cannot wait for the rest of this series by Isabel Jolie.
Rhodes who is our MMC is the creator of ARGUS, which a an AI program/system that the government is after and Rhodes doesn’t want it to fall into the wrong hands. He’s a little bit of a worry wart.
Enter Sydney who is our MFC, she is a former CIA agent who is under cover working for a private company sent to investigate Rhodes. She sets up a chance encounter while Rhodes’ is on vacation and the rest is history as things get complicated and feelings start to get in the way.
This story has everything that you could ask for: danger, betrayal, passion, mystery. This was a bit of a slow burn but I was along for the ride! We are introduced to side characters who I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of and I cannot wait to see where this series goes.
Only The Wicked is a must read and should be on your TBR list! I highly recommend it. Thank you Grey’s Promotions and author Isabel Jolie for this opportunity to read this eARC. Only The Wicked releasing September 25, 2025
This is book one in The Sinful State series and it is Rhodes and Sydney’s story and omg what a great start to a new series and definitely a must read. Sydney was a CIA operative until a mission went wrong so now she is working for a new company and undercover so that she can get intelligence on Rhodes who is a Tech Billionaire with cutting edge AI technology but now he had caught the eye of the government who thinks that he is selling secrets and it is Sydney’s job to find out the truth by getting as much information as possible but now she is doubting everything including the information so now she needs to find out without compromising the whole mission. The attraction, chemistry and connection between Rhodes and Sydney is strong and intense right from there first meeting and the more time that they spend together the more explosive and addictive things between them get but with all the secrets and difficult situations that are surrounding them and the secrets are eventually revealed how will it all work out in the end. The twists and turns keep coming which will leave you on the edge of your seat and have you turning the pages because you need to see what would happen next in this action packed book. I couldn’t put this book down and read it in one sitting as it was so addictive and kept my attention throughout and I can’t wait to read the next book in this amazing new series.
The start of a gripping new series from Isabel Jolie and Only the Wicked was an intricate tale of secrets, lies and betrayal, of espionage and conspiracy set mainly in the corridors of power that is Washington as billionaire tech guru Rhodes MacMillan finds himself falling victim to a honeytrap as former CIA agent Sydney Parker, now working for a mysterious new group targets Rhodes in an attempt to uncover the truth about his creation, an all seeing program named Argus she thinks is being misused for personal and political gain and whether or not Rhodes is involved. Sydney has personal reasons for wanting to know the truth but the more she gets to know Rhodes she can’t believe he’s capable of betraying his country.
The overall plot was complex and absorbing with several suspects and featuring the topical theme of AI and the fears it generates with the capacity for its misuse especially when combined with a more basic human greed. Rhodes and Sydney were both lonely people. Rhodes seemingly had only had two relationships in his forty years but had never fully committed to anyone while Sydney had been all about her career, but they’d been instinctively drawn to each other leaving Sydney conflicted about spying on Rhodes. She also had doubts about her new team and who exactly she was working for and, she decides to trust her instincts. With Only the Wicked the Sinful State series is off to a strong start and I’m keen to read more from the characters introduced in this book.
This book is really for anyone who loves action, betrayal, deciet, lies, spies, espinoge think about any good action movie you've ever watched and of course romance spicy romance but there's allot of lies to get threw before Rhodes and Sydney get there. Rhodes is a tech billionair who has created the perfect safety net with his AI program ARGUS whitch is really scary because in the wrong hands the genie can't be put back in the bottle and everyone is watching the government secret organizations even those that you think are trustworthy cant be trusted when power that can see everything has been created people will do anything to have it so is it really a good time to take a vacation. Sydney isn't what she seems she's a former CIA operative recently hired to a secret organization that she thinks is above board they want her to watch, lie and deceive Rhodes she's the ultimate honey trap lethly and gorgeous but she's got more then one secret and it's not just her name that's a lie and when all that deciet comes out its a test of trust between Rhodes and Sydney can you find love in the middle of so much deception and danger.. this is a slow burn romance with allot of moving parts it's a thriller with heat it also keeps you guessing who is telling the truth and who just wants to end you. I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via GreysPromotion and this is my honest review.
Isabel does it again! I’ve loved every single book that I’ve read. The high octane suspense/mystery theme mixed in with a spicy romance and kickass characters is phenomenal. Isabel has a way of writing that pulls you into the story and you can’t put the book down. I really enjoyed reading this story as it had so much going on that you couldn’t help but be immersed in everything!
Rhodes is a confident albeit sometimes arrogant man who started a company from the ground up that is now worth millions of dollars. When his company is under investigation for a potential release of state secrets, he meets Sydney. Sydney is an ex-CIA agent that is now part of a secretive cohort operation. She goes undercover to investigate Rhode’s company but soon realizes she didn’t know love would come along. The spark that these two have together from the beginning is intense and hot. Rhodes is a man who knows what he wants and takes it without apology. Sydney is a strong female who does not bend to any man. When these two clash, boy is hot and heavy as the idea of surrender is not appealing to either one of them. I liked how both of their characters were strong and relied not on each other but we’re powerful together. This book touched on mystery/suspense, spicy romance, secrets, betrayal, and the fight for it all.
ARGUS. AI intelligence created by Rhodes MacMillan as a surveillance tool. So far Rhodes has kept his company private to keep the system out of the wrong hands. Pressure from his CFO and government oversight has him paranoid. But you know what they say, it's not paranoia if they're actually out to get you. So, when he meets a beautiful woman on vacation, he falls. Too bad it's right on his face. Sydney Parker lost her CIA assets and her job. Choosing to find the people who sold them out, she joins a private group KOAN and does what a spy does best. Until her attraction becomes her downfall. When she gives in, things get complicated. I love romantic suspense. This is a fast-paced tale full of intrigue and spice. Rhoades and Sydney are both such complex characters. Rhoades is rightfully untrusting of most people. Sydney feels responsible for the assets that she lost. The supporting characters are great as well. I loved the plot and the entire concept of a modern day seven deadly sins. This book centers on pride or hubris as the ancient called it. The twist at the end was surprising. I can't wait for more from this series.
Only the Wicked is a gripping, intense romantic suspense that masterfully blends high-stakes espionage with a deeply passionate romance. Isabel Jolie introduces Sydney, a former CIA agent turned undercover operative, and Rhodes, a billionaire caught in a dangerous web of secrets and betrayal. Their slow-building, fiery connection is layered with tension, trust issues, and steamy moments that kept me hooked throughout.
I really enjoyed the complex character development and the way the plot intricately weaves suspense and romance without sacrificing either. The emotional stakes felt genuine, and the chemistry between Sydney and Rhodes was electric, making the more vulnerable moments especially impactful. The fast-paced action and intrigue added an exciting dimension to the romance.
While the story explores familiar thriller and romance tropes, Isabel Jolie’s sharp writing, compelling characters, and richly plotted narrative elevate Only the Wicked into a consistently engaging and satisfying read. If you love dark, steamy romantic suspense with strong, determined leads, this book should definitely be on your TBR.
Only the Wicked is a fantastic read. If you love all those secrets, lies and maybe some spies then you will love this new start to the Sinful State Series. Rhodes is a talented programmer who would like to keep his company in the private sector. But there are government agencies and even his closest business partners pushing it to go public. He knows what information he has access to and is not willing it to be used as a weapon. Sydney is a former CIA agent who is back in the field under a new company looking for answers. She has her eyes on Rhodes to get the answers they are looking for. You are going to love the banter and chemistry between Rhodes and Sydney so much. I love how they have to work through who can they trust as all the twist and turns come their way. They make an amazing team. This book keeps you on your toes as you try to figure out who is the good guy in all this. I cannot wait for more to come in this new series. I could not put this down. Only the Wicked is the first book in a new series and gets the series off to a good start. Sidney is ex-CIA, now working undercover for a private company. Rhodes is a billionaire and talented programmer who would like to keep his company in the private sector, but he’s being pushed by the government and his business partners to go public.
Sidney engineers a “chance” meeting with Rhodes whilst he is on vacation. From the outset, the dynamic between them is a slow burn laced with sharp banter and sizzling tension. There are multiple layers of intrigue, danger lingers in the background, secrets unravel, betrayal and mystery. Sidney and Rhodes need to work together to find who they can trust.
Sidney and Rhodes journey has many twists and turns. Rhodes’s past collides with Sidney’s determination to carve her own path. The tension pushes them closer, forcing them to rely on each other and proving that trust is earned through fire. Overall, Only the Wicked is a Dark, suspenseful, and slow-burn intense romance and a great start to the series.
Only the Wicked is a wild ride filled with secrets, danger, covert operations and lies. I was instantly hooked as the web of the story unfolded and I could not get enough of what was happening and trying to figure out at every turn what was real and what was nefarious.
The story is fast paced and engaging and I really enjoyed how Rhodes and Sidney worked to find out what was happening and who was at fault when danger is lurking everywhere and they're trying to ensure that the technology of ARGUS does not end up in the wrong hands.
The audiobook performances by Marie Hawkins and Scott Rose were phenomenal. These two narrated the perfect captivating tale that made the story even more interesting. Marie brought to life Sidney's intelligence and wit and showed why she was a great CIA operative. Scott perfectly portrayed Rhodes' intelligence was the creator of ARGUS, but also the thoughtful way he navigated trying to figure out where the leak was.
Thank you to Isabel Jolie and Blue Nose Audio for the ALC.
Story - ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Spice - 🌶🌶 Narration - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Only the Wicked is book #1 in The Sinful State Series. Ms Jolie is a new author for me and I was super excited for a spy/intrigue political thriller with some steamy romance spicing it up! Rhodes has developed AI technology that is being sought by enemies of the USA. Sydney is former CIA working for another invisible agency and Rhodes is her target. This story could seriously have been ripped from the headlines it was that believable. Rhodes doesn't know who to trust as everyone seems to be pushing their own agenda. Sydney is positive Rhodes is innocent, but she's had mistakes in her past from questionable decisions. Ms. Jolie has given us a great base for the rest of the stories in this series. Dirty politicians, ruthless billionaires, and betrayals galore has me looking forward to more!
The duet narration was fantastic! Scott Rose and Marie Hawkins were perfectly cast to voice Rhodes and Sydney, the nerdy-ish tech genius and the feisty operative. LOVED their narration. 5/5 stars!
Espionage, intrigue, hidden agendas, and spicy spies- this was a fun read. I felt like I was reading a type of Bourne book but written with a female gaze, and smut 😂I will definitely read more of this series!
This was not my normal romance read, I typically aim for super dark/paranormal/fantasy romances. I was intrigued by this one because of the CIA operative FMC and the billionaire MMC who falls first. I enjoyed their relationship evolving throughout the story. Towards the end, it was less about their sexual escapades and more about redefining their relationship after all the secrets were revealed. Figuring out if they could trust each other.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the multiple references to mythology, the contemplation of the characters' motives within the grand scheme of life and what drives their actions. Definitely a multifaceted read that I recommend.
I look forward to the next two books in this series!
Thank you Grey's Promotions & Isabel Jolie for the digital arc! I absolutely loved this book! I loved the suspense/mystery aspect of not knowing who it was. I absolutely fell in love with both characters. I loved Sydney and Rhodes. They were both complex characters who have always been closed off but were able to open up with each other and be comfortable around each other as well. I love how everything came out and how it was not at the end of the book. There was enough space for a perfect resolution. Also kind of proud of myself for guessing who the person was hehe.
I also loved all the side characters. Also, I am about to read all of Isabel's books just to get to Caroline and Dorian's story (I'm a weirdo, even though they are standalones, I need to read them in order lol). Also, I really hope that we get a book for Hudson & Quinn, Daisy, Jake and Noah. I need them ASAP please and thank you.

Sydney, formerly a CIA operative, finds herself in a high-stakes situation after a mission goes awry. Now working undercover for a new company, her mission is to extract critical intelligence on Rhodes, a tech billionaire at the forefront of revolutionary AI technology. With the government suspicious that he’s selling secrets, the pressure is on for Sydney to uncover the truth.
Prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of twists and turns that will keep you breathless and eager for more. This action-packed tale is so gripping that I couldn't put it down; I devoured it in one sitting! Don't miss out on this unforgettable experience—I can’t wait for you to dive into the next book in this incredible series!
Only The Wicked has fast paced writing, elite operatives, ruthless billionaires and truths and lies are interwoven. I loved that it jumps right into the story and you're immediately introduced to Rhodes and Sydney. Rhodes owns an AI program called ARGUS. He's forced to go on vacation and meets Sydney on a hike. She's former CIA and is supposed to find intel on Rhodes. There's an immediate attraction between the two. When the truth finally comes out Rhodes will do anything to keep Sydney.
I loved the characters. It was never a dull moment. I loved that despite Rhodes and Sydney falling for eachother fast, their relationship still felt natural. I loved their moments together. I loved the dual POV. I enjoyed listening to Rhodes perspective. As for the audiobook narration, it's amazing! Performed in duet by Marie Hawkins and Scott Rose. Marie conveyed Sydney with confidence and exuded her charisma. Scott is a new to narrator. I loved his deep baritone. He was exactly how I imagined Rhodes to sound like. The duet narration brought the story and characters to life. Overall, I enjoyed it!
Audiobook coming soon!
Thank you to @bluenoseaudio for my ALC and for the opportunity to review and listen.
Only the Wicked is the start to what will undoubtedly be another awesome series. I had to stay up until 3 am to finish because I simply could not put the book down! Sydney and Rhodes are very strong, loyal and likeable characters and I loved how their love bloomed despite the stakes against it. The great combination of steamy sexy times, emotionally charged moments of discovery, thrilling action and suspense kept my pulse rate up and my heart racing, while the twists and turns added that sinking-stomach feeling of riding a rollercoaster. While there's a well-earned HEA for the couple, we are introduced to a group of intriguing side characters with hints of what's to come for them. I can't wait for the next story! I was fortunate to have received an early copy and am leaving this review voluntarily and honestly.
Only The Wicked is a fast-paced, smart romantic thriller that dives into one of today’s hottest topics—AI surveillance and the ethics behind it.
Rhodes is the creator of ARGUS, a powerful AI system that’s leading the market, but it’s also raising red flags. Sydney, a former CIA operative now working for a private intel agency called KOAN, is sent to investigate whether Rhodes' tech is being used to expose undercover agents. She sets up a “chance” meeting while he’s on vacation, and things quickly get complicated as personal feelings start to blur with professional duty.
This story has it all—mystery, betrayal, danger, and a slow-burn romance that keeps you guessing. I loved how the book tackled the moral gray areas of AI and how it's used (or misused). It added real depth to the plot and made it feel incredibly relevant.
