I read المسرحية الأخيرة (The last Play) (2025) by Egyptian novelist Yehia El Gammal published by Dar El Shorouk. It is a page turner and the size (205 pages)is perfect. I am impressed by the author’s writing skills and his ability to express effortlessly his thoughts-provoking narrative in colloquial Arabic, albeit with style. The plot is engaging, the characters well defined and likeable, with recognizable human traits reflecting diversity, strength, weaknesses, and flaws. The writer is obviously well read, non judgmental, compassionate and an advocate of “errare humanum est”. The selection of the social class of the characters is innovative as it is not usually covered in Egyptian literature. This is perhaps because the protagonist and other main players of are too permissive for the المسرحية الاخيرةً common reader, the selected class being mostly clustered in closed circles. The timeline of events, stirred by the Covid pandemics, reveals the fragility of the human being in confronting death and the inadequacy of medical care that could have saved lives. The fear from Covid has however confined the diverse characters of the story in one place, creating or reviving rapports between family members and friends with diverging inclinations: the conformist and the liberal; the materialistic and the spiritual. The intergenerational fondness flowing between age groups is endearing and magical. The love that erupts like a weed but grows and survives despite moralistic rejection; the silent but deep sufferings caused by parental injustice triggered by righteousness are moving. The allusion to Beckett “En Attendant Godot” is subtle, with the role of “Lucky” dominating, being the one pulling the strings! The title of Marquez’ novel “Love in the Time of Cholera” reminisces of Enaam and Hilmy’s story, but the novel’s plot could more forcibly evoke the profound emotional experience between Youssef and Samia, delving in the enduring nature of love. The untold stories and secrets revealed at the end of the tale follow the dramatic storyline masterfully. This is excellent material for a movies as it could be too intense, too subtle and too complex to be captured in a play. Heartiest congratulations to the author. It is indeed a “good read”. This novel is the 3rd that I read for the same author and by far the best. Not only because of the plot which is very interesting but also because of the way it makes me think about my life and choices, the feelings and the state of confusion that accompanied the pandemic raising many questions and describing death in a brilliant way .A lot of nostalgia and mixed feelings .A novel that is much like Paulo Coelho’s Alchemist you are not the same after you read it.A must read book.
The best thing about this novel is the setting - (very Chekov-ian in nature). A group of people who get together in an isolated natural palace - to the backdrop of distant events. And all these characters interact - revealing secrets, desires and conflicts. The backdrop of the Pandemic – pushing the quarantined characters together - leading to conflicts re-emerging and unresolved issues to return - is an absolutely a brilliant idea.
The writing is an easy read - and has some wonderful contemplative moments - it shows the writer's romantic heart and questioning yearning soul - a quality that is always present throughout the novel - giving an undercurrent of a child like innocence and purity - creating some beautiful feelings and captivating moments (that feel fresh). The characters are interesting - vivid and worth investing in.
