Brides with Grit #2

Millie Marries a Marshal

Rate this book
Mail-order bride Millie Donovan was looking forward to meeting Sam Larson, a Kansas homesteader, who she is sure, from reading his heartfelt letters, will provide her with the love and safety she wants and needs. Millie arrives on the train, not realizing that her husband-to-be was killed in an accident, until Clear Creek’s town marshal informs her of the situation.
Town Marshal Adam Wilerson never plans to marry due to his dangerous job. After reading letters found at his friend’s home following his untimely death which were sent from his friend’s mail-order bride, he can’t help thinking of the woman, and believes he may be in love with her himself. But instead of sending Millie on the train back to her former home, he finds himself welcoming her—and her two-year-old charge—into his house, and into his heart.
When danger threatens, Millie faces it head–on to protect the people she loves, including the town marshal.
Can Adam keep the peace in town—and his house—or will the man following Millie cause an uproar that will endanger them both, and ruin their chance of a life together?

Sweet cute historical western romance featuring a mail order bride from Chicago going to the prairies of Kansas. Unfortunately, her groom is dead when she arrives so his best friend the town marshal meets her on the train. I really liked Millie and Adam, the two MCs, and loved how the town pulled together to help Millie and Tate when they needed protection. Fun clean romance.

There's a kernel of a good story here (namely, what Millie is running from) that gets buried under a literal mountain of series-itis. This is a 120 page novella. It's book 2 in a series. Instead of using those pages to have our hero and heroine spend time together and show the reader they're "falling in love" the author clutters up the pages with characters featured in book 1 and books 3-7. It's a hot mess. You know who Millie spends a lot of time with? Adam's mother. It would have been more believable if she'd fallen in love with her.

Millie comes west as a mail-order bride, but the man she came to marry died. Adam the Marshall meets her at the train station. But he didn't know she had a son. He takes her to the hotel after telling her the news. She however has no money so as soon as he leaves so does she. After he tells his family that she also recently lost her sister too. They tell him he has to make sure she and the child are ok. He finds them sleeping in his own abandoned chicken house. He lets them sleep in his jail for the night. His mother and sister show up early the next morning and before he knows it she is his housekeeper and living in his house. But something isn't quite right. Is the boy really hers? Why are they so skinny?

Mollie Marries a Marshal

I wanted to like this story, but it seems all my time was reading about all the characters in this book and in the future books in the series. Where was the story? I quit reading at 50%.

I understand that a 1-star review is harsh, but this book has no romance. NO ROMANCE, in a romance novel. There is no chemistry described, and no kiss, just nothing. Complete waste of time. I also love western/historical romance, and this just had no charm.

Millie arrived in Clear Creek as a mail order bride to discover that her intended husband had died in an accident. While this knowledge would be enough to bring sadness to anyone, for Millie it also brought panic. Millie not only brought her hopes and dreams into this marriage, but secrets as well, the kind of secrets that could get a person dead quite easily.

Adam is a man who firmly believes that right is right with little wiggle room for right is also right for the given situation. Since Sam’s death he’d been searching the train station for this mail order bride to arrive in town, intending to give her the bad news. He certainly wasn’t expecting a beautiful woman with a fiery temper who obviously was more nervous than she should have been… toting a toddler along with her. What Adam doesn’t realize just yet is that this lady and that little tot will factor strongly in his future… especially once his mother and the ladies of Clear Creek get involved.

I enjoyed Millie and Adam’s romance. It was an often tense story, secrets tend to do that to a person, but it also showed the kindness of strangers and a man who has to rethink his stubbornness and his stand on what is the right thing to do. I have to admit though, for a lawman Adam certainly was gullible to a con man rather easily. And because of that Millie got to shine as she set him straight.

If you enjoy Western Historical you’d enjoy Millie Marries A Marshal, and this entire series. Yes, there are a lot of characters in each story, for me, that only enhances the small town appeal of Clear Creek and the surrounding area.

This historical romance is the Millie and Adam's story. Millie has accepted a mail order bride ad to marry Sam Larson. When she goes to leave town to move to her intended, her sister goes into labor with her second child. Millie knows her sisters husband is abusive, and when her sister asks her to take her two year old with her, she doesn't hesitate. So when Millie arrives in Kansas to meet Sam she finds out from the local sheriff that her intended died in an accident. Sheriff Adam Wilerson takes her on as a housekeeper when she has no where for her and her little nephew Tate to go. This story is full of wonderful characters with Millie who would do anything for those she loves. She's also strong and held in her faith and culture of being Irish. Adam is a hardworking lawman who loves his family and the little town in which they live. There is a little bit of everything in here from faith, love, intrigue, mystery and more.

A Good Read!

Sometimes a feel good read is just what I needed. Millie Marries a Marshal reaffirms life can improve. Domestic Violence is an awful situation. Millie helped her abuse sister and nephew. The other women banded together to protect and provide support for the abused Mother, child and Millie when the abusive man hunted them. The women worked as a shield. In the real world abuse victims require the same support systems. May the real women find a safe haven like in this story.

Predictable & shallow

Good thing this was a short novel. Some of the plot was nice, with a little humor. The reason for Millie's fleeing westward was quite valid, but you don't hear about it until waaay into the story. That's annoying. And the writing was shallow. The characters were not explored very deeply, and there were too many of them for the attention given to each. It became confusing, where the reader wonders who this person is, and why was he or she added? I liked the Baker's kisses, though!

I good story about how life use to be in the west. When Millie arrived in Clear Creak as a mail order bride to marry a rancher - she find out he had died. The Marshall’s family took her and her care in and showed how friends became family. Later all the secrets came out and Marshall Adam realized that he loved Millie, they married. Very good reading.

Millie Married a Marshal

This isn't the usual genre that I read but thought I'd give it a try since it was free. A very interesting story, full of adventure, intrigue, sassy and strong women and fun. It made for some good reading. I may just try for some of the others in the series.

We know Millie is in trouble when she hits town as a mail-order bride. With nowhere else to go, the marshal's mom and sis take over and secure her a home and job.
When the ladies discover exactly what trouble she's in, they set up a plan to protect her. But no one protected the marshal's heart.

I really enjoyed the story.

Fun read. Millie and Adam have a rough start. They come through and all works out in the end. Standalone, but the characters continue to make appearances in the series. Really enjoyed reading this book.

Clean Christian-ish romance

The book was a little too pat. There was no danger and everything turned out for the best. The separation was weird and uncalled for but it's sweet and cute if you are in to that sort of thing. I prefer a little spice with my sugar.

A poorly written, historically inaccurate attempt at a novella. Don’t waste time or money.
