The Three Cultures: Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and the Humanities in the 21st Century

In 1959 C. P. Snow delivered his now-famous Rede Lecture, The Two Cultures, a reflection on the academy based on the premise that intellectual life was divided into two cultures: the arts and humanities on one side and science on the other. Since then, a third culture, generally termed social science and comprised of fields such as sociology, political science, economics, psychology, and anthropology, has emerged. Jerome Kagan s book describes the assumptions, vocabulary, and contributions of each of these cultures and argues that the meanings of many of the concepts used by each culture are unique to it and do not apply to the others because the source of evidence for the term is special. The text summarizes the contributions of the social sciences and humanities to our understanding of human nature and questions the popular belief that biological processes are the main determinant of variation in human behavior.

About the author

Jerome Kagan was an American psychologist, who was the Daniel and Amy Starch Research Professor of Psychology at Harvard University, as well as, co-faculty at the New England Complex Systems Institute. He was one of the key pioneers of developmental psychology.
Kagan has shown that an infant's "temperament" is quite stable over time, in that certain behaviors in infancy are predictive of certain other behavior patterns in adolescence. He did extensive work on temperament and gave insight on emotion.
In 2001, he was listed in the Review of General Psychology among the one hundred most eminent psychologists of the twentieth century. After being evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively, Kagan was twenty-second on the list, just above Carl Jung.

أشعر برغبة شديدة في النوم محاولة تذكر الأشياء بصعوبة بالغة، كالمكان الذي خزنت فيه الملف، وأين وضعت نظارتي، وهذه حالة لم تزرني منذ أيام الجامعة حين كنت أنام على الدوار والإشارة وأنا أقود السيارة.

نعم.. الكتاب! تريدونني أن أتحدث عنه، هذا الكتاب طفل جميل جدًا يجلس معك فترة حلوة يضحكك ويبهرك ويغضبك، ترجم بعد فترة طويلة من صدوره عام 2009 بالنسخة الإنجليزية للأسف، وهو رد على كتاب آخر يرى أن العلوم التي يستحق أن تكون علومًا هي العلوم الطبيعية وبذلك يلغي وجودنا من الحياة، وكل سنوات دراستي ابتداءً من القسم الأدبي، يرد عليه كيغان مشكورًا في كتابه هذا ليذكر أشياء كثيرة جدًا خلاصتها أن العلوم وجدت لتتكامل لا ليعلوا واحد منها على آخر.

كل مافي الكتاب ممتع تقريًبا، من التاريخ والسياسة والعلوم والطب وعلم النفس الديني يأخذ كيغان من حصيلة معرفته ليدلل على أفكاره بدون طرحها وحيدة، قرأت فصلي العلوم الاجتماعية 1 و2، وأظن ذلك كافيًا بالنسبة لي، العبارة الأهم التي ذكرت في الكتاب كله هي:"لقد قيض للبشر ألا يكون بوسعهم أبدًا معرفة الحقيقة لكنهم يخترعون حقيقة مركبة قائمة على المزج بين المادة والعقل حيث لا يزيد أحدهما أهمية عن الآخر".


عندي ملخص ممل كتبته للفصلين إن كان أحدكم يستمتع بالملل فليخبرني ليكون الملخص مصدر متعته.

Kagan offers simplistic accounts of academic cultures with a bias towards an autonomous psychology. He often relies on unjustified assertions and isolated examples.

Pretty terrible. It's an important topic, but the book is so idiosyncratic and poorly organized that it's a bear to dig through the chaff for the main points Kagan's trying to get across. There are occasional insights, but much of this reads as Kagan's scattered musings hastily thrown together under the framework of exploring the 'three cultures' (echoing C.P. Snow's 'Two Cultures' lectures of the late 1950s) of the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The natural sciences get 50 pages, the social sciences almost 120, and the humanities just a scant 23 (much of which is devoted to non-academic humanistic pursuits like film and poetry!).

As for the actual ideas, his main argument is that scholars should be more willing to consider approaches outside of their own disciplines. This is pretty unobjectionable as these things go, but it lacks bite because Kagan's more interested in criticizing certain disciplines than understanding them. Arguments for interdisciplinarity that fail to account for the real pull of disciplines as intellectual endeavors tend towards the banal.

Throw in dubious and occasionally contradictory historical claims and you've got a book almost designed to frustrate.

This one can be safely skipped. Michèle Lamont's How Professors Think" covers some of this same ground much more effectively.

بالرغم من ان الترجمة مبتعبرش كويس فى بعض الاحيان وبالرغم من ان افكار الكاتب متدفقة محتاجة تركيز وترتيب ووقفات الا ان الكتاب شيق جدا تستمع بالاطلاع الواسع للكاتب ومواقفه الموضوعية من مختلف العلوم فى تناولها وتحليل اخطائها ومحاولة البحث عن مخرج لتلك الازمات التى تواجه الثقافات الثلاث

Kagan is a bit long-winded in the first few chapters but I found the chapters on the Humanities and how the three cultures can work together to be very interesting.

فكرة الكتاب ممتازة إلا أن الترجمة رديئة نوعا ما مما حال دون عرض الفكرة بوضوح.

الكتاب دردشة مثقفة، نعم واضح أنه يريد أن يقنعك بإضفاء قدر من الموضوعية لحماستك المتحيزة لأحد مجالات العلوم سواء الطبيعية أو الإنسانية أو الاجتماعية، ولكن أسلوبه شابه شيء من الغموض والتمطيط والإطناب وغياب الوضوح المباشر للفكرة العامة الكلية أحيانا، فجاءت الفوائد مشوشة، ليس للقارئ إلا أن يقتات على هوامش الفكر في كثير من الأوقات..
لكن~ الأسلوب على غموضه وكثافة مباحثه وما يبعث من ملل كان فيه نباهة ولمعة ذكاء تلملم الخيوط المتشعثة ليتنبه القارئ أخيرا لغرض الكاتب..

الكاتب يغرض في الأصل للرد على شبهات روائي يدعى سنو متحيز لثقافة العلوم الطبيعية، أي أن الرد على سنو هو الاعتبار الذي أدى لفكرة الكتاب، فأتت نبرة الكتاب متقمصة لشيء من الحيدية ، ولما كان الكتاب تلتف مباحثه لرد الاعتبار للعلوم الاجتماعية والإنسانية المحجوب فضلها في هذا الزمن الذي وضع فضل إنارة مصباح الحضارة المعاصرة في كف العلوم الطبيعية وحدها دون سواها (هذا بالطبع مبدأيا، لاحقا بطريقة الجرد، سنرى أن لكل ثقافة مساؤها ومحاسنها) ، فالكاتب يحاول أن يجتر القارئ بعيدا عن هذا التيار الجارف الذي استقر في الوعي الجمعي بهذه الحيدية، ويعرض عليك مناقب ومثالب كل منهج في الثقافات الثلاث ويتعرض لأكثر من عالم زلزلت آراؤه المجتمع وكان لنظرته أثرا راديكاليا مثل فرويد وآدم سميث وداروين ومن سواهم..

ولما كان ضروريا التخفيف من جفاء الكتابة، فقد كان الكاتب يقحم بعضا من ذاتيه -على الهامش وليس بشكل مكثف-، لذا لا تستطيع حقا أن تقول أنه أقنعك جدا أو أبرز لك ما يستحق الفهم حول هذه القضية ولكن دردش لمدة 330 صفحة-باقي الكتاب ملاحظات ومراجع- فيما هو مصلحة لتثقيفك.

مثل الدواء المر، قرأته، فتخيل قراءة كتاب كان الانتهاء منه أمر لا بد منه وإلا تحرجت من ضميرك القرائي..

The kind of panoramic, privileged vision now rarely found in transdisciplinary works of academic philosophy - which is a blessing in some ways, given the intellectual conservatism that here reigns. Kagan defends the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities from within their respective cultures, but does little to understand the winds of change - and is the poorer for it. I came to this having read of it as a spiritual and literal successor to C. P. Snow's The Two Cultures, but came away unfulfilled.

في عام 1959م القى تشارلز بيرسي سنو محاضرته المشهورة ( الثقافتان) التي جاءت انعكاسا للأوضاع السائد�� على الساحة الاكاديمية آنذاك وكانت المحاضرة تستند الى فرضية ترى ان الاهتمامات الفكرية قد انشطرت الى نمطين من أنماط الثقافة:
أولهما ثقافة الفنون والآداب والعلوم الإنسانية
وثانيهما ثقافة العلوم الطبيعية
زاد نوع ثالث من الانساق الثقافية اطلق عليها العلوم الاجتماعية يلفت اليه المؤلف في هذا الكتاب

فكرة الكتاب جيّدة جدّاً في بيان حاجة الإنسانية للعلوم الثلاث - الإنسانية والاجتماعية والطبيعية- ردّاً على غطرسة بعض المشتغلين بالعلوم الطبيعية، إلّا أنّ الكتاب يعوزه الكثير من الترابط في الأفكار. خرجت منه بفوائد عديدة، ولكن كان بالإمكان أفضل مما كان.

The style of writing is very boring, the important parts in the book are chapter one and chapter four specially the part related to economy ,
the translation of the text is good , but there's another role to translator in comment and explain , and it's shown in commentaries, this was bad .

Maybe if this didn't too often read as a thinly veiled rant about the pernicious influence of women and people of color on the development of (post)modern academia, it would have been worth the read.
