D. Rebbitt is the author behind the Globur Incursion series. He has always enjoyed classic military science fiction. His military career provides him with valuable insight into the realities of the military world. Epic space opera with a military edge best describes the books. Inspired by Heinlein and Weber, the books would be enjoyed by those who like Scalzi, Richard Fox, AK Duboff, or James A. Corey
When writing, he most enjoys the interaction between characters. He has built a universe based on realistic science. His books are laced with a gritty realism that puts characters in interesting situations and dilemmas. Each novel is layered with interconnected events and stories, giving real insight into the minds of the characters.
There are battles, victories, and losses. Behind it all, the stories of the characters unfold. Their human flaws mean they do not always make the best decisions.
You could begin The Globur Incursion series with this final volume since the Prologue gives a very brief encapsulation of what has occurred in the prior volumes, but to do so would not do justice to the span of series. So, presuming you have read all nine previous volumes to this series, you would expect that this "final" volume will satisfactorily resolve the main plot lines that have populated the prior volumes, and sadly in some cases you would be wrong.
(SPOILER ALERT) While I have read and enjoyed all the previous volumes of The Globur Incursion immensely with some exceptions (the failure to resolve the PFP dilemma at the end of Book 7 comes to mind) and the author has "liked" all my reviews of this series thus far, this final installment has gone off the rails and he is NOT going to like this review. But if I am going to be honest in my reviews, I have to say what I feel about each book I read. Here are some of the problems I have with this final installment:
1. Near the beginning of this installment AND just as I was thinking that this installment was getting too Machiavellian, one of the characters says EXACTLY that. I really don't care for Machiavellian plots. If I wanted political intrigue I would be reading Tom Clancy or any of the many other authors who write that stuff.
2. And to make matters worse, the Machiavellian sub-plot went full Star Wars, complete with a cabal of (never identified) very powerful individuals and a megalomaniacal evil Senator who the author reveals has been plotting all along with that cabal to subvert the Republic, and then planned on betraying the members of the cabal to become Emperor. Although the plans of evil Senator are (SPOILER) thwarted, there is absolutely nothing revealing who the other members of the cabal were or what happens to them. A few paragraphs would have solved this omission.
3. And to make matters even worse, about half way through this “final” volume, the author pulls a rabbit out of the hat (metaphorically) by bringing in an all powerful/all knowledgeable “peaceful” new alien race to explain and then solve THE major plot line of the entire saga, ie. the conflict with the Globur. He might as well have waved a magic wand and said “presto, they all lived happily ever after”.
4. And (BIG SPOILER) worst of all, despite the author's effort in this final volume, the cliff hanger ending of volume 1 (Fulcrum) is never actually resolved. We are left with the unsatisfying enigma that is the time loop dilemma regarding the history/appearance of John Forest. WTF?
While the editing has been consistently below the standards of what is expected of published works, that deficiency does not seriously detract from the pace of the story. The real problem with this final installment is what it doesn't do. Perhaps I had unrealistic expectations of how the author would resolve the major and minor plot lines of the series, but after reading this final volume I was ultimately disappointed. I really, really wanted this concluding volume to fully resolve the John Forest cliff hanger, but it didn't. And the resolution of the main plot line (the Globur incursion) was unworthy of the previous 9 volumes and was anti-climactic.

‘It’s only a matter of time. We’re going after the Globur’ – A scintillating novel!
Canadian author D. Rebbitt brings his satisfying epic space opera with a military edge - The Globur Incursion – to a conclusion with REVELATION. For those new to this series, ‘The Globur were the first alien race humans had ever encountered. A human exploration team had made a discovery of some ruins on a world at the edge of human space. That expedition and ships had been destroyed soon after, and the ruins were now in the Globur controlled area of space. The first contact reports had described their ships as “globular” in design, and the moniker had stuck.’ ‘The aliens were entirely different from humans. They had an insect-like appearance, including six appendages. They were warm-blooded and had an internal skeletal structure. Their atmospheric requirements were also similar to that of humans. That meant that Globur were also interested in the same sorts of planetary systems as humans. Humankind had never been in an interstellar war before…’ The Prologue reports the incidents of the series and places the central characters – John Forest and Admiral Jones – in the foreground.
The writing of this fascinating story brings sci-fi/space opera in focus by the military acumen of the author, distilled as follows; ‘The Globur attacked without warning of mercy. They were driven from human space as a stalemate settled in. John Forest had retired on Earth, and finds out that he may not be who he thinks he is. Suddenly, the Globur were back. Grand Admiral Jones hatches a plan to lure the Globur into a battle and unravel the mystery of their new advantage. The Globur are beaten at terrible cost, but what comes next? What really happened to John Forest? Grand Admiral Jones seeks to answer those questions and more. But he is unaware of a growing danger closer to home. Will Jones bring peace to the empire? Will there even be an empire?’
While reading the entire series is highly preferred, this final volume is so well composed that it becomes a standalone novel of stature. A very fine reading experience!
