This book was a true 3 stars in the sense that it was really just ok...like 60%. I think the PLOT was interesting like I was invested in where the story was going, but there wasn't enough world building or magic. I was soooo excited for a witchy mystery. I love fantasy, I love magic, I love mysteries, I love animals, like this book sounded right up my alley lol. But it was just kinda dry. Nothing was really fleshed out, the plot just kind of unfolded before you and characters divulged major pieces of information without really any buildup. I would've loved to learn more about the witchiness of the O'Sheas, more of how Addy didn't measure up in her mind, more of how familiars help their magic, more of what their MAGIC really is. And then there were hints at what would be a romance but you never really get any. Ultimately I finished the book out of curiosity, but it left me wanting me more in absolutely every way
A fast and enjoyable pallette cleanser book. As far as cozy mysteries go, this one was pretty good! I prefer my cozies to have a paranormal aspect, and this scratched that itch.
Addy and her sisters are witches in a small town in Washington, where she runs a coffee shop. When a town resident is murdered Addy, with her cat familiar, decides to investigate. The murder victim apparently had enemies, due to his shady financial dealings, and Addy questions several people despite warnings from the police.
Like a 2.5; rounded up because it is cute but it was lacking a lot of substance. It was 200 pages. Take a few more hundred and build your characters and your world. It would have been better that way.
Acquired Kindle edition when offered free on Amazon.
Am leaving this review at the 45% mark because I haven't yet decided if this will be DNF or not.
(Edited to add: DNF at 54%. My eyes don't roll far enough to continue.)
The writing is weak. My progress/status reports already mention the over-abundance of present participles. They got in the way of the reading. While this may be a pet peeve of mine, such over-use indicates a lack of technique, lack of style, lack of voice. You get points for level of difficulty (writing a book, concocting a plot, etc.), and then you get points for style (writing it well, believable characters, giving the reader a sense of being there). Lack of style shows up right away, and it's usually indicative of a writer who doesn't really understand the nuances of the language.
Here's an example:
She pushed her hair out of her face, fluffy from sleep. . .
Christene, Sara . Familiar Spirits (Twilight Hollow Witchy Cozy Mysteries Book 1) (p. 37). Vulture's Eye Publications. Kindle Edition.
Is her face fluffy from sleep? Most readers and many writers don't pay much attention to this sort of thing. And I guess if there are no gatekeepers and anyone who wants to put their book out there in front of the public can do so, maybe criticism of weak writing has no value. How is a writer supposed to know, if all they get are rave reviews and no criticism at all?
The very next sentence is even worse:
Her tattooed arms were bare this morning in a white tank top paired with plaid flannel pajama pants.
Christene, Sara . Familiar Spirits (Twilight Hollow Witchy Cozy Mysteries Book 1) (p. 37). Vulture's Eye Publications. Kindle Edition.
So, her tattooed arms are wearing a white tank top and plaid flannel pajama pants? Again, it's not just the fractured syntax that pulls me out of the story, though I may be the only one. It's also the fact that the reader is given more information about the pajama pants than about the tattoos. The tattoos have been mentioned previously, but not described. Why the heck not? Shouldn't the reader -- and the writer -- be more interested in the tattoos than the pajamas? Tattoos hint at . . . something. Pajamas are just pajamas, and even being plaid flannel doesn't make them particularly intriguing.
A lot of the description in this book is handled similarly. We get that Max is 5'11". Numbers mentioned once, almost like a mug shot, don't mean anything if they aren't followed up with active description. Does Addy avoid heeled boots to give Max a height advantage? Does she ignore it? How does he seem to feel about it? If you throw in a very specific detail like that, make sure it means something.
Here's another example of what I consider extremely weak writing:
Thirty minutes later, Luna and Callie were bursting through my door as soon as I unlocked it. Max stepped out of the kitchen, and they both froze.
“Why Addy,” Callie said, “I didn’t realize you already had company.”
Luna, the more polite of the two, walked past me and introduced herself to Max.
I narrowed my eyes at Callie, warning her to be on her best behavior.
Max introduced himself to her too, then stepped toward me.
“So I’ll see you tomorrow then?”
“It’s a date. Thanks for waiting with me.” Now that my initial fright had passed, I was feeling silly for having him stay. But at least we'd had a nice dinner together.
Christene, Sara . Familiar Spirits (Twilight Hollow Witchy Cozy Mysteries Book 1) (p. 61). Vulture's Eye Publications. Kindle Edition.
I include the entire page because it opens with the statement "thirty minutes later" and after some chit chat conversation, ends with "But at least we'd had a nice dinner together." Does this mean that in half an hour Addy managed to whip together a "nice dinner" and they had time to eat it? Can one even open a can of beans and boil a couple of hot dogs and eat it all in half an hour?
The plot is no better than the writing. Addy finds a body, recognizes who it is, but the reader doesn't know any more about this person. How did Addy know him? What does she know about him? She calls the police, and they begin an investigation. Why would she get involved if the police are already on it? Her explanation is that one of the detectives accused her of being the murderer and she has to clear her name! In the process, she does things that make no sense, like interviewing the deceased's ex-wife. Does Addy think she's going to get more information from this woman than the police have? Don't they have means of investigating backgrounds and bank accounts and so on beyond what Addy, who is just a coffee shop owner, can do?
Along with discovering a dead body on her way home from work, Addy acquires a black cat she names Spooky. (Clever, eh?) She takes him to the local veterinarian who turns out to be the dead man's cousin. The only way she figures this out is that she does some "snooping" in the vet's office! Why would she do that? Of course, she gets the information that he shares a last name with the decedent by noticing his diploma on the wall. Well, that's not "snooping." And why didn't he have his name on the door of his clinic? Or didn't she notice? Any good detective would have! (That was sarcasm.)
How did Addy know the pawn shop owner had skipped town? Sure, his business was closed, but that didn't mean he was on the lam.
And on and on.
After reading 45% of this book, I don't care at all about who killed Neil Howard or why. None of the characters have any depth or substance. The author hasn't made me like them or hate them or worry about them. I just don't care at all. I know nothing about their feelings, their backgrounds, their emotions. Everything is just flat, worse than Dragnet and Joe Friday's "Just the facts, ma'am." At least Joe Friday got the facts right.

Not my usual style of books, but this was a fun read. I enjoyed the characters a lot and found them entertaining, even when the main story wasn't. The pacing was good, though, and didn't drag on when it could have. I, personally, would have liked a bit more focus on the world-building and magic of the story, but this is only the first book in a series so maybe it gets more in-depth in later books.
The first cozy mystery by Sara Christene is such a fun read. As is obvious by the title it is all about a witch who comes from a real powerful family of witches but who feels like a defunct witch herself until her familiar comes into her life. Addy O’Shea, sister to Luna and Callie and owner of a lovely coffee shop in the little town of Twilight Hollow, where everyone knows everyone else, stumbles across the body of Neil and it is obvious that he has just been murdered. Detective Logan White is the prime investigator and he sort of accuses Addy of the murder since she was the person to find him This sets her hackles up and she decides to clear her name by solving the murder and finding who in fact had killed Neil. Addy ends up risking life and limb trying to get to the bottom of this mystery. I love the character of Spooky, the black cat who comes into her life and helps her unravel the mystery, making Addy a much stronger witch with him as her familiar. I really enjoyed the setting for this cozy mystery, the characters which I am sure will become permanent fixtures in other forthcoming stories and the touch of romance imbued into the tale. I look forward to reading more of these whodunit mysteries solved by our intrepid sleuth and her fantastic black cat!
An Inept Witch a cozy town, and an old dark magic.
Welcome to Twilight Hollow.
Adelaide O'Shea is a witch, from a family of witches. She owns and runs a cozy coffee shop called the Toasty Bean and while she's not as powerful as the other members of her family she can put a little magic into her Coffee and teas.
One night on the way home, she both encounters a black cat and a dead body and the dead body has her phone number in his pocket ...
Soon she has a familiar and is hip deep in an investigation that involves a dead body, a charming veterinarian, a grumpy but good looking police detective and an ancient dark magic.
This is a beautifully written cozy urban fantasy/mystery. The action is good managing to be tense while never being over the top. The plot is fast paced, with just the right amount of twists and turns. The characters are a delight, Adelaide and her sisters have a good relationship and each of them feels real. The Vet and the detective are both kind and grumpy in turns but I liked both of them. By far the standout without actually doing a lot is Spooky the cat and I really look forward to his and Adelaide's relationship growing. All in all a charming read that I whizzed through definitely a 5/5 read .
This is a cute story, but the characters are not well fleshed out so I had a hard time identifying with anybody. I like the idea of the town and the idea of the characters but again it fell kind of flat simply because it felt so rushed. Terms like "mundanes," we're sprinkled without but not explained to the reader by exactly what they meant which just made it feel kind of blah like you're trying to make this special non-magical word but then you don't take the time to tell us why we should appreciate it. Random characters popped up constantly and you don't know who they are or why they're there other than as props.... It felt pretty white roomed. I think if it was just given a little more consideration and expanded considerably this could be an amazing series.
3.5 for lack of fleshing out, but I can still see this as being a series worth reading.
This story seems all too familiar. Witch with a cat familiar who is first a suspect in a murder and then decides to investigate to clear her name. Detective is first suspicious then becomes interested in her, other man close to the case also interested in her.
I don't know how she keeps her business running since she spent more time out of it than in and just closed it early whenever she wanted to. Also a white truck almost ran her and the detective over but she gets into a white truck in a forest that she already feels is spooky! It's a small town, how many white trucks are there whose drivers are connected to the murder. And why didn't her cat warn her of danger this time?

This came up as a suggestion on instagram ads and I was intrigued. A cosy, witchy fantasy seemed right up my alley. However, from the beginning it was clear this was self published and I even felt like I was reading something written by AI. It’s very repetitive in its sentence structure and rather flat. There isn’t enough magic or world building. Lots of unnecessary description of people but not a lot of other description?
I like the plot and rhetoric concept of the story, but the execution just didn’t work out. If it wasn’t a fairly short book I do think I’d have DNF’d. Feels like an early draft and could really benefit from a good editor and fleshing out.
I love everything this author puts out.. and now I have a new addition to my list can’t wait for December for this sequel because March is so far away for my next tree of ages fix.. And I still have so much to read by her but I’m in the middle of a few.
She has a way about her writing that is effortless, it draws you in and you become attached and begin to care for her creations good or bad. She could write until the end of times and I would read everything I could find. I’m addicted!!
This is an entertaining new supernatural cozy mystery series. They find casting characters and an entertaining storyline. A young woman who owns a small coffee shop and happens to be a witch. Although she’s not a very powerful witch but her two sisters are and her mother is. Read on and find out what happens in this new adventure. Addie and her sisters fight evil spirits to keep themselves safe and in the process help find out who is responsible. Read on and enjoy the story.
If you’re looking for a scary, spicy book, this is not it !! I’ve been reading books to make sure they’re good for teens and though the book is it also kept me hooked !! The authors characters and story line flowed together perfectly. A who done it that I guessed wrong several times !! It wrapped up nice and neat !! So even though these can be read as standalone you really don’t want to because you want to know and see these characters fill out even more !!
I seem to have been stuck in a rut Lately in my reading. I enjoy Witchy cozy mysteries But they all seem to be The same just written by a different author and It either involves a library or a bakery Or a bookstore. This was A coffee shop However it did not flow the way The others have been. The story took place outside of the coffee shop And I really enjoyed how it is Unfolding. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. The characters are very enjoyable And I look forward to Their developing storylines
I grew up loving Charmed and Ghost Whisper so I absolutely loved this book. Right from get go I was hooked. I have very high standards for books so a 5 star review from me must be GOOD. I loved every single character. The plot was predictable but I didn't mind at all. I sat down with a hot chocolate and cosy PJS on and sank into this book. I will write this review then go get the second book! Very happy I gave this book a chance.
Addison considered herself a 'broken' witch. When she finds a cat she doesn't immediately realize she now has a familiar. Nor did she know it was her long dead aunt's familiar. She meets a kind and handsome Vet who helps her investigate a murder. She also meets a handsome detective who warn her not to get involved. Will she solve the murder or will she be next?
This is my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. Adelaide and her sisters Luna and Cassie live in Twilight hollow and she owns a coffee shop, when someone she recognises gets murdered, it sets of a new phase in her life and brings in a new cat who turns out to be a part of her family from old and two new boyfriends, one is a policeman the other a vet. Both are keen. There is the murder to solve and a dark magic fied to defeat.
This book was really cute! And it had great mytho for witches. I normally don't gravitate towards witchy books-- but this one hooked me in why the cozy mystery and didn't let me go. There was some clunky dialogue and a jarring start to the story, but it found a really steady flow and became super engaging and I didn't at all expect who the killer was. And now I want to know where the dark magic is coming from!
so one of my best friends recommended this book for me, I thought it was going to be corny when I first started reading but I was completely wrong. I judged the book by its cover. I really enjoyed this book. There’s a great romance cliffhanger at the end. It was a great mystery involving witches that kept me guessing. This is definitely a great fall read. It didn’t have any spice and for me it worked. It was a great read without it. The story continues in Twlight Hollow.
This was a nice story with a small hint of romantic interest without the smut, mixed in with light magic and a murder mystery all in one. It gave enough suspense without being overly scary. This first book in the series kept me glued to the end so I’ll definitely read the second. I am interested to see how Addy grows in her abilities and I want to see if the kitty will be able to telepathically communicate more with her.

Familiar Spirits is a quick read about an inexperienced witch who comes into her own after being found by her familiar, a scruffy black cat.
She takes Spooky, the cat, to a local veterinarian who helps her look for the murderer of his cousin, who Abby finds newly dead.
Abby's second potential love interest is Logan, the police detective who discovers that the three sisters are witches. He doesn't even run screaming when he learns the truth about them!
If you want a light and whimsical cosy mystery you could not do better than this little book. At a 186 pages it is a delightful afternoon's entertainment. We have witches, cats, gentle romance, a murder and something dark and brooding lurking in the background. This is the first book in a series and suffice it to say I have ordered the next three (I think there are about 8 to date). Nothing too taxing or scary and just a bit of gentle romance, a lovely way to spend a few hours.
Solid 3! Wasn't bad by any means, I liked most of the characters! There was maybe 1 that I wasn't huge on
I went in a completely different direction with the mystery, was way too suspicious of a character that had nothing to do with it 😂 So the mystery kept me on my toes!
I wish there was a little more magic in it, but I think with what was there, it kept me interested
A good intro book, I definitely think I'll keep going with the series!
There were a few grammar issues where the verb suddenly switched to present tense while the rest of the paragraph was past tense. That was a bit jarring. Otherwise this was a good story with a likable main character and an interesting plot. if you like witches, mystery, and cats you will like this tale!
While I enjoyed the story and the byplay of the men in her life, I do wish the character research had been thorough... Francis is male Frances is female, is very confusing when you know the error and it's why most Frans exist because people keep giving us a sex change .🙄
