My stepdad bought this book because he’s Mickie’s cousin, and he cares about poetry. Tommie told me about it, and I was home one weekend and just devoured it in one sitting.
As a Queer person who grew up and still lives in the South, I really appreciated the truth that he captured in these poems. There’s good, bad, and ugly. There’s a tendency to sweep the bad and the ugly under the rug, but it’s just as much a part of who we are as the good.
There’s a precision of words he uses when writing that is important—it has to be the right word. I remember in college my poetry professor told us to write about our lives and also keep our diary separate from our writer’s notebook. Poetry is a craft, and of course a poet as respected as Mickie, he did what so many people try and fail to do.

Stunning collection of poems. Kennedy's voice pulled me in from page one. Through him, we see the AIDS epidemic, a compromise of life choices, flashbacks to coming-of-age, and a progression toward happiness--in the final poem, "Aubade Where Nobody Leaves," Kennedy seems to have found it. Also highly recommend his 2024 chapbook Glandscapes (Button Poetry, 2024).
