When the air itself can kill in a single breath, how far would you go to protect your own?
From 4-million-copy bestselling author Mike Kraus and Stephanie Mylchreest comes a new thrilling tale of survival.
When the first eruption blankets New Mexico in a deathly sulfuric mist, no one believes it can reach them. But as the unstoppable, acidic and unpredictable haze spreads, the world descends into chaos. Hannah Holloway, a sustainability influencer turned survivalist, finds herself racing home with her two children as the mist closes in on Albuquerque. Her sealed homestead may offer temporary refuge, but with survivors around that may not be all they appear and a husband who may never make it back, nothing is ever certain.
Tristan Holloway, miles away on a hiking trip, watches helplessly as the mist consumes valleys and people alike, including killing one of his best friends right before his very eyes. With only a backpack and a promise to get home, he navigates the brutal new landscape where the wrong breath can be your last and kindness is a risk.
Meanwhile, in a government facility buried deep underground, volcanologist Dr. Evelyn Kim discovers evidence that could save lives. But her orders are stay silent and protect the data. Breaking free might cost her everything but staying might cost the world even more.
Passionate about reading and writing for as long as she can remember, Stephanie was inspired to create her own literary worlds by the books she has lost herself in over the years (some of her favorites include: the Harry Potter series, The Road, 1984, Wool and Station Eleven).
Stephanie writes speculative fiction in the wee hours of the night after her children have gone to sleep. She particularly loves writing stories about characters who find themselves in unusual or challenging situations, and exploring how they deal with the fallout.
Having lived on several different continents over the last ten years, Stephanie is also an avid traveler. She married her British husband in Las Vegas with Elvis as celebrant, which was just as fun as you would imagine.
I'm one that needs some sensible science and explanation for what is happening and this does fall a bit short on that. There is no science to explain multiple and repeated volcanic eruptions (with no accompanying earthquakes) that are worldwide and continuing. There is no explanation as to how a mist of sulfur dioxide (which is a by product of eruptions) would keep floating around the globe, maintain lethal potency, disappear and reappear like a bad horror movie. Setting that aside, the writing itself is good. I do find the leaders of the science group in the bunker just maddening. You could surely provide the info to those listening and trying to survival without giving them your address and inventory. I rather like some of the characters, though I think Hannah's house with all of the livestock cooped up inside must be pretty smelly now. I don't like the lack of reasonable science as the premise, but I'm kind of interested in what happens and hopeful of a bunker rebellion, so may given book 2 a try.
What will humanity do when the very air they breathe turns to deadly acid haze?
That's the central premise of Twilight's Ruin from Masters of the post-apocalyptic survival-thriller genre, Mike Kraus and Stephanie Mylchreest. Multiple volcanic eruptions are triggered on every continent, repeating endlessly, in the most catastrophic way ever.
Three alternating storylines in different US locations keep the action and the danger at maximum intensity, as the separated Holloway family members, and scientists in a secret facility react, interact and overcome critical challenges, as they strive to reach their objectives...and live to tell their stories.
A must-read for fans of Justin Bell, Aiden Cross and Marcus Richardson, grab yourself a copy of Twilight's Ruin today...and don't forget the gas masks!
Wow ! What a start to this new series. I couldn't and didn't want to put it down. It was thrilling with a great storyline and very likeable main characters. I definitely recommend Twilights Ruin, you won't be disappointed. I'm hooked and desperate to read more.
Nonsense. There's imply not enough of a premise other than bad shit happened, in the form of a mist that no one saw coming, no one understands, and no one has any concept of how to begin. The action is missing. Lots and lots of jargon, phrasing, repetitive phrases of "She'll be okay, he's strong, they're fine" but HOW any of that is supposed to take place is never begun to be explained. If there is one thing I cannot stand in any book, it's that the author tries to make people so much more likeable than they probably really are. This bit of fluff is full of that same sort of gung ho crap that just sets my teeth on edge. That, and that the bad guys bite it, the good guys never have really bad days and there are always, always an insane number of "preppers"-those who just know it's all coming down, one day; and of course, when it actually does, none of them are ready for anything. There's zero science. This was like reading "Little Miss Muffet hates tuffets" or some other such wanna-be ending of the world garbage. The only thing worse than that type of fluff is the ending that forces you to buy the next in series. If you want to write a book, how about writing the entire book? Not selling it page by page to the ones who can't manage more than 300 pages without passing out from exhaustion? This is a tiring and mostly ridiculous book about nothing. NOT continuing on the series. I know the plot. Hint: It's about nothing.
Twilight's Ruin is about volcanos worldwide releasing sulphur dioxide, which reacts with air to form a gaseous acid cloud that kills all it touches. Featured is the Holloway family. Hannah Holloway is a homesteader/influencer, who is at the store with her kids Ethan and Lila when things start going wrong, while her husband Tristan is on a hiking trip with old friends Caleb and Mike. When they see an odd cloud killing people, they hike to higher elevation to escape, but end up trapped in a bomb shelter full of unpredictable people after fleeing a firehouse. During all the chaos, Evelyn Kim, a vulcanologist, struggles with the moral grey area of being safe in a secure facility underground as she studies the gas' behavior and tries to forecast and warn people of possible clearings of the gas, but is forced to do it clandestinely, as the powers that be don't approve. The writing is everything you should expect, knowing the authors. They've worked together before and it shows in the quality of the finished product! The characters, pacing, plot, descriptions, every aspect of the writing is just right! 5/5 stars, highly, highly recommended for fans of apocalyptic survival thrillers or anyone who enjoys a perfectly composed thriller!
Twilight’s Ruin Book One brings an exciting apocalyptic event that Stephanie builds her new series off of. With her usual strong character work mixed with wonderful world building and thrilling scenes, she has created another series to read and follow. I am a huge fan of all of Stephanie’s works, and can easily recommend this and her entire catalog. Well done as always!
This is a great book. Although it is fiction, it tells a story about how life could be if volcanoes irrupt. Magma is moving under the soil of the United States. Volcanoes could erupt at any time, causing clouds of ash in diverse places. Therefore, I consider this book to be educational, not just an entertaining read.
I did enjoy this adventure, I liked the characters & the energy of the book. Some action, lots of excitement & quite high levels of stress, just what you want from this kind of story. I will look forward to the next part of this series! A good fun read for all that love post apocalyptic stories!
Another outstanding new series. What can be done to save the population when the very air you breathe is toxic. Full of suspense, great characters that keep you intrigued and wanting more. Impossible to stop reading until you finish the book.
This is a different take on any of the stories by these authors I have read. The characters are so believable and real. I just really enjoyed this book. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
As usual books written by Mike Kraus and associates keep you on edge as life becomes hard. This time the volcano s.erupting have caused amidst that destroys everything. We are following three different groups as they fight this killer fog. Book two is next.
It may seem like someone else's problem, but when the deadly volcanic mist continues to spready, all are in danger.
This is book one of the series, so a good and proper place to start.
This is a post-apocalyptic disaster story featuring a deadly volcanic eruption. The story is well written with a setup that could be part of tomorrow's headlines. That makes it both good as it is believable, but also bad in that it sometimes strikes a bit too close to home. Suspension of disbelief is actually pretty important at times. The characters are really well done, both the good and the bad. Our characters are really well done and quite resourceful which comes in handy as they have a lot to deal with. Overall, this was an excellent introduction to the series and I am eager to see what happens next.
