Twilight's Ruin: Book 2:

Rate this book
Tristan and Caleb press toward Colorado Springs through relentless waves of acidic haze, facing violent survivors, deepening trauma, and a final refuge that offers no clear future. At the homestead, Hannah and Elias struggle to keep their family safe amid collapsing infrastructure, dwindling resources, and a hard lesson in trust. Deep underground, Evelyn risks everything to escape her facility, beginning a new mission to guide survivors—and forging an unexpected bond over the airwaves with Elias in Book 2 of Twilight’s Ruin.

From 4-million-copy bestselling author Mike Kraus and Stephanie Mylchreest comes a new thrilling tale of survival.

When the first eruption blankets New Mexico in a deathly sulfuric mist, no one believes it can reach them. But as the unstoppable, acidic and unpredictable haze spreads, the world descends into chaos.
Hannah Holloway, a sustainability influencer turned survivalist, finds herself racing home with her two children as the mist closes in on Albuquerque. Her sealed homestead may offer temporary refuge, but with survivors around that may not be all they appear and a husband who may never make it back, nothing is ever certain.

Tristan Holloway, miles away on a hiking trip, watches helplessly as the mist consumes valleys and people alike, including killing one of his best friends right before his very eyes. With only a backpack and a promise to get home, he navigates the brutal new landscape where the wrong breath can be your last and kindness is a risk.

Meanwhile, in a government facility buried deep underground, volcanologist Dr. Evelyn Kim discovers evidence that could save lives. But her orders are stay silent and protect the data. Breaking free might cost her everything but staying might cost the world even more.

Passionate about reading and writing for as long as she can remember, Stephanie was inspired to create her own literary worlds by the books she has lost herself in over the years (some of her favorites include: the Harry Potter series, The Road, 1984, Wool and Station Eleven).

Stephanie writes speculative fiction in the wee hours of the night after her children have gone to sleep. She particularly loves writing stories about characters who find themselves in unusual or challenging situations, and exploring how they deal with the fallout.

Having lived on several different continents over the last ten years, Stephanie is also an avid traveler. She married her British husband in Las Vegas with Elvis as celebrant, which was just as fun as you would imagine.

Both stakes and tensions are rising fast!
Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2025
As Tristan and Caleb are forced to lean on one another more and more, Hannah and Elias struggle to keep things together on the homefront. While book 1 did an exceptional job of establishing the dangers presented by environmental factors and allowing us to get to know the basic contours of the characters, book 2 is, though still heavy on purely environmental dangers (acid clouds eating away at any manmade structure and things like window frames and seals, unbreathable air, etc), also begins to demonstrate that other survivors are often the greatest danger. Elias also makes a (sort of) radio friend readers are familiar with. Twilight's Ruin Book 2 continues the story with just as high of narrative quality and gives us more insight into characters, especially Tristan and Caleb, who were already very well established as well as introducing several new characters, though we don't know how long they're sticking around. We also learn just how far Tristan will go to keep people around him safe, more insight into his psyche. The descriptive quality is still absolutely exceptional, and haunting, with very thorough descriptions of what the clouds do to both the environment and people who don't make it to safety. This is a 5/5 star book I can confidently recommend to any audience, young adult and up. YA as it has plenty of action and tension to keep one's attention, but without the over the top graphic and sexualized violence common to the apocalyptic survival thriller genre, nor excessive expletive use. If you enjoy apocalyptic thrillers, no matter your age, Twilight's Ruin Book 2 should be at the top of your 'To Read' list!

This continues an interesting series, though I am still very much doubting there is science to explain why there is sulfuric acid that comes and goes in a location. Even accepting this is possible, how can it keep appearing without any real dissipation in its concentration? The people in New Mexico and Tristan/Caleb and which ever associates they have at the the time all seem to have impeccable timing and never actually get caught out in the fog. Also with the nature of sulfuric acid, the description of rot and deterioration of metal, wood etc, how are they able to maintain the antennae and equipment for amateur radios? I also found it a bit odd that Hannah and her kids made Christmas crackers, apparently like those common in the UK. It is just not a typical thing in the US and though it might just be a fun thing for the family, it did kind of seem odd with no explanation.
I do kind of like Hannah and her family and Tristan and Caleb as well as Evelyn who is determined to do some good for the survivors. As the desperation of survivors ramps up, I am curious to see what happens.

Tristan and Caleb are still trying to make their way although the sulfuric haze is always a potential if not actual danger.

Here's where I do have a question about the entire series. Volcanoes do release sulfur dioxide during eruptions but I don't know if this haze would advance and then vanish then advance and then vanish and so on and so on over and over.

Evelyn is still in the research place but is chaffing under the over-control and basic lack of interest in survivors, only an interest in data.

Then there's Hannah and others on the farm desperately trying to survive by working hard and trying to block up any places the mist can come in.

Then there's thugs attacking people in a church basement which shows just how low some people will get in an actual disaster.

Evelyn's plan is to get somewhere where she can actually help people find places they can go safely indicating her intense interest in real people and not just in the data.

The series is getting more interesting, I believe.

Twilight's Ruin Book 2 - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

Stephanie Mylchreest and Mike Kraus' second exciting post-apocalyptic thriller, Twilight's Ruin #2, centres again on the central characters, Hannah Holloway and three generations of her family, who're divided by the deadly sulphur haze, as they struggle to overcome dangers of every kind.
Evelyn is a scientist with a conscience, who's trying to make reparation after fleeing the facility she believes triggered this global Armageddon, and her storyline intersects the other characters'.

As Christmas approaches their preparations and outlooks vary widely...but always with hope for the future.
Don't miss Twilight's Ruin 2 - it's guaranteed to grip you firmly by the imagination throughout - and maybe give a warning for our planet!

Stephanie delivers a thrilling follow up as the characters continue on their dangerous journeys. I was drawn in to the story, as Stephanie has a way of pulling the reader into each scene.
This is a well written and entertaining read, I’m looking forward to more in this series. One that is easy to recommend, as all of Stephanie’s books are.

Another good one !

I find the premise of this story really fine. Almost everyone who writes about volcanic disasters focus on earthquakes, pyroclastic flows, lahars, etc.
