Half-fae, half-human—entirely unprepared to face the war my bloodline dragged me into.
The moment I touch the broken rescue stallion, scars thicken like armor across his back and wings begin to regrow. I've barely processed this when a gruff man with glowing eyes and a pulsing energy shows up on my ranch, claiming I'm half fae...and the key to saving three realms.
I refuse to let anyone else decide who I become, but that doesn't stop my fae "guardian" from black mailing me to follow him to his realm, where small folk are vanishing, only to return stripped of their magic and dying slow, tortured deaths. And while my healing magic is stirring here, it’s barely enough to help with the demons hunting us, let alone save anyone.
As for my guardian? Seems like even being near me is painful, and I can’t tell if it’s from resisting the connection between us, or something darker. Especially when it feels like his blood commands mine... and my own might destroy him.
But distraction could cost us everything; if I fail the prophecy, demons will enslave the fae, destroy the human realm, and take the creature I care about most: my Leath Pegasus.
They say I’m the key to saving the realms, but as time runs out, I can't help but wonder if anyone can stop what’s coming.
Heather D. Grace is a fast paced urban fantasy author that loves to add a slow burn romance. When she's not busy writing about tough as nails female leads and their alluring protective mates, she and her husband spend time with their 4 children and 7 fur-babies, spending time exploring the beautiful mountains near her home and she helps in the veterinary field as an Registered Veterinary Technician.
If you are looking for a low-spice fae Fantasy romance with a slow burn romance, check this one out! 💕 I think it’s also perfect for fans of Magical Creatures and Where to Find Them, as it has a strong animal companion element full of unique creatures!😍
Tessa’s special bond with her Pegasus is one of my favorite parts of the story. Their mutual protection and loyalty make for such a heartwarming friendship. Tessa works at her family’s mountainside equine training facility, content with her peaceful life surrounded by horses and her mother. Neil, a handsome fae, suddenly enters her world, desperate for Tessa’s help to save his entire race from a doomed prophecy.
At first, Tessa finds it hard to believe what Neil tells her: that she is half-fae, gifted with healing magic, and bonded to a Pegasus. But soon, she must travel with Neil, a fire fae, through a magic portal to his court to help stop the evil prophecy. The story follows their journey through battles with dark creatures and alliances with magical beings, all while a slow-burn romance unfolds between Tessa and Neil. Because Tessa is half human and half fae, she still has much to learn about her healing magic, and it’s inspiring to see her grow from an underdog into a powerful woman through trust and perseverance.
The story ends on a cliffhanger, leaving me eager to see what happens next!😱
This is the first book in the series (dont worry, book 2 is coming soon 😉). We follow Tessa on self- discovery, family secrets, and discovering she is half-fae. She is tracked down, and convinced to leave the human world to learn her powers, and discover 3 other realms. This FMC was so relatable with her stressors, and worries (hello anxious girlies). This had the adventures, battles, friendships, possibly a slowburn. It is fast paced, and amazing world building. If you love fantasy and romantasy, this book is a must read! Cant wait to see what comes in the adventure for book 2! 🐴
I received an eARC copy of this book for my honest review. I really enjoyed reading this book and learning about all the different characters and creatures. The book is full of adventures, battle scenes, new friendships and animal bonds. I liked that the storyline wasn’t predictable and took some twists and turns.
Tessa is one of the main characters, she is very curious and wants to know a lot about the new world. She has a strong bond with her horse Azriel.
There are hints of romance in this story, but I would call it a slow burn. I liked reading about the other characters too and curious how it all will play out in the second book. Thank you for letting me have the opportunity to read this book, I can’t wait to read the next one!

I was excited at the idea of this book, but the beginning annoyed me. It felt too far fetched, i love a good fantasy, but it just didn't read as believable that a human girl was needed to save the fae and was taking it all in her stride so easily. (I know she questioned and didn't believe it but it still just didn't read quite right) I wish the book started with a chapter on Neil, either being given his orders or in his search for her as he just isn't a fleshed out character until the last half of the book. He seems like a side character, as we know so little about him. EDIT: after reading book 2, I 100000% back my idea that this book should have started with Neil searching for Tessa, and a little around how much the fae look down on on humans to really give the story the depth that it is sorely lacking.
🌍𝕎𝕠𝕣𝕝𝕕 𝕓𝕦𝕚𝕝𝕕𝕚𝕟𝕘, 𝕨𝕣𝕚𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕡𝕒𝕔𝕚𝕟𝕘: This was an okay book. I enjoyed the world building and overall storyline. The POV switching was OK but didn't really offer much more in the way of backstory or true feelings on the MMC. The author has a tendency to over explain things or repeat bits, which makes it drag at times and doesn't help with the slow pace of the story. I did like that there was a portion of the story that was plot driven, which made for interesting reading rather than just the flaws / needs of the main characters driving the story forward.
The writing style is easy to read and follow along with, but Heather does repeat things in her writing. I love the magic system and the animal sidekicks, especially how the animals can communicate with their human- this alone kept me invested in the story.
I was not a fan of the timeline in which things apparently happened. It felt like many things they did were rushed along or just thrown into the story to help it make sense in the next chapter. For example, Neil teaches Tessa to fight in just a couple of hours, she wasn’t any good and could barely even lift a sword, but then after said training she feels she is able to be independent in a fight or even choose a lead role in a fight. It just didn't read true even as a fantasy. Perhaps a magical training potion should have been used to help it be believed?
I enjoyed the turns that the plot took. It was nice that the main storyline wasn't predictable and took detours. It really brought this book out from the usually fae saving the world subgenre. I did feel like the little people village chapters were drawn out though, what with the authors habit of over explaining. Rather than going over what we know or can infer, there could have been more fight training, potion making, herb / plant learning, or power development added into the chapter.
🧝♂️ℂ𝕙𝕒𝕣𝕒𝕔𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕤: I enjoyed Tessa being inquisitive and asking lots of questions about the new world and also her willingness to learn about it. She also had very real emotions and real-life responses to the happenings around her. Instead of being completely able to deal with anything she comes across, we see her thinking and struggling and then tackling the problems.
I appreciated that Tessa and Azriel were building their bond while there, but that also read as unbelievable. We read that powers strengthen when you find your leath, but all of a sudden, his wings grew, and he could mentally talk to her? There was no involvement with the reader in this process, so we couldn't see it happening or learn along with them. I thought there would be some apprehension or some sharing of feelings between them. It seemed like completely blind acceptance from a character who took 5 chapters to decide if she was going on a mission or not.
Neil was very much a side character for a good portion of the book. We know so little about him after reciving A very brief few sentences about his upbringing and not knowing why he wasn't close to his parents leaves much to be explained hopefully in book 2 because again, his character just isn't fleshed out enough or developing at all.
⏳ 𝕎𝕠𝕦𝕝𝕕 𝕚 𝕣𝕖-𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕕 𝕠𝕣 𝕣𝕖𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕕? Erm, I would recommend to those liking cutesy, easy to read, low spice fae books, but I wouldn't generally recommend or promote it to people. I also wouldn't re-read it, I would just read the recap before the next one, and yes, I will be reading the next one if it comes across my path.
🪧𝔽𝕚𝕟𝕒𝕝 𝕥𝕙𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤: I'd say it's its a good book for the right reader. It's a very YA and lacks any real tension, making it a cutesy, simple fae story with a little adventure, some magic weilding, and some predictable yet satisfying moments. I love my fae books, and I love both low and high fantasy, but this was just not deep/detailed enough to hook me.

𝕄𝕪 ℝ𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕊𝕪𝕤𝕥𝕖𝕞𝕤: ⭐️ DNF
⭐️⭐️ I managed to finish it but it was rubbish. I won't keep a physical copy and won't recommend it, but it's a shame as the plot could have made a good book in another authors hands
⭐️⭐️.5 It was OK. I wish i didn't start this one as It didn't do it for me as I struggled to read it. It had an interesting premise that fell flat but I had to see what happened in the end.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ I don't regret reading it, and I will read the next one, but this one did have a few flaws. [These could be repetative writing, gaps or plot holes, better character growth or world building, areas needing more detail] Generally, the book lacked depth and became confusing. The plot resonated with me even though it annoyed me on the whole.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 I'm glad I read it. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to the right people, but I wanted more! Sadly, it's easily forgettable with a few issues I just couldn't overlook/get past.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Good book! I loved it, but... I needed more! I really did enjoy it, but it had a few parts that needed more detail or added history/background or lore. But that's because the story or characters were memorable, and the plot was strong with brilliant twists. I would re-read if I needed to catch up for the next book and would recommend.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Great book! I truly wish the story had been thought about more, or the author had been given more time as this book is so close to brilliance! I will likely read again and will definitely be recommending to all!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ WOW! Absolutely amazing book! Well written with great characters and a plot so memorable that it will stay with me. I will definitely read this again, I will be recommending it and sharing it with the whole world! Also- I NEED A PHYSICAL COPY!
This slow-burn urban fantasy romance hooked me from the moment a broken rescue stallion sprouted regrowing wings under the heroine’s touch. What begins as an intimate, emotional scene on a quiet ranch quickly spirals into a multi-realm crisis when a gruff, glowing-eyed stranger arrives—claiming she’s half-fae and the key to stopping a prophecy that could destroy all three realms. What I loved most is how grounded the story feels even while brimming with magic. The heroine is refreshingly stubborn, determined to choose her own path even as she’s blackmailed into the fae realm where creatures are vanishing, magic is being stolen, and demons lurk in the shadows. Her healing abilities awaken slowly—frustratingly slowly at times—which makes every small triumph feel earned. This isn’t a chosen-one who immediately masters her power; this is someone clawing her way toward survival and purpose. And then there’s the guardian. The dynamic between them simmers with the perfect slow-burn tension—equal parts chemistry, danger, and forbidden connection. The fact that being near her literally hurts him adds a delicious layer of angst. Is he resisting their bond, or is something darker threading between their bloodlines? His internal struggle is palpable, and the way their fates tangle feels both inevitable and terrifying. The stakes rise steadily as the mystery deepens: magic-stripped victims dying horrific slow deaths, a prophecy whispering doom, demons poised to enslave the fae and spill into the human world. Through it all, the heroine’s bond with her Leath Pegasus adds emotional richness and grounds the epic plot with genuine tenderness. By the time the final revelations hit, I was fully invested—not just in the fate of the realms, but in this heroine who questions whether she can save anyone, even as the world begs her to try. If you love: ✨ slow-burn romantic tension ✨ gruff guardians with secrets ✨ immersive realms ✨ found family themes and animal bonds ✨ prophecies that don’t make things easy —this book absolutely delivers. A compelling, atmospheric read that blends danger, desire, and destiny with deft storytelling. Can’t wait for the next installment.
Thank you to Heather D. Grace for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
⭐⭐⭐
I was very quickly drawn into this book and to Tessa because she felt like a more realistic version of a character who is faced with impossible happenings (Fae, magic, prophecy) instead of one who just jumps in head first. I appreciated her apprehension and her questions about the world she was asked to involve herself with and also her willingness to learn about it. She also had very real emotions and responses to the happenings around her instead of being completely bad-ass and not even caring shadow monsters are trying to kidnap her. Although at points she did come across as completely naive, but I guess growing up in a very rural place does that to you.
I feel like Neil is a side character for now. I know he's the Guardian but there's nothing else learned about him. A very brief few sentences about his upbringing but the internal comparison as to why Tessa and her mom were close and he wasn't to his parents leaves much to be desired. Hopefully in the next book there's more information and character building. Currently I don't feel a connection to this character at all, just a grumpy leader.
I did feel like the little people village chapters were extremely drawn out. I understand they were being attacked and Tessa wanted to help them, but I feel like there could have been more teaching/power development happening and the chapters could have been combined.
I also appreciated that Tessa and Azriel were building their bond while there, but that also felt lacking. All of a sudden his wings grew fast and he could mentally talk to her? I get it, other part of the soul, but I thought for sure there would be some apprehension or something between them. It seemed like completely blind acceptance from a character who took 5 chapters to decide if she was going on a mission or not.
The book ending on a cliffhanger definitely is drawing me in to read the second one. I hope there's more character development!

I just love it when there’s animal bonds in a book!
Court of Light and Dark is a slow burn Urban Fantasy Romance and the first book in the Hidden Courts of the Fae series. The story follows Tessa, who discovers she is half-fae and the key to saving the realms. Delivering this life-changing news is Neil, a gruff and gorgeous fae man who resorts to blåckmàiling Tessa into following him to his realm, where small folk are vanishing only to return stripped of their magic and slowly dying. If Tessa fails the prophecy, demons will overrule the fae, destroy the human realm, and take Tessa’s beloved Leath Pegasus. As for Tessa and Neil, he continues to resist their growing connection, and there might be something dark at play. Especially when it feels like his blood commands Tessa’s…and hers might destroy him.
One of my favorite aspects of Court of Light and Dark was the animal bonds, complete with telepathic communication. Our protagonists aren’t bonded with just any creatures, but with a phoenix and a pegasus, which are both mythical creatures I love. Tessa’s journey of self-discovery as we follow her through action and adventure was an important theme of the story and one that I enjoyed. I also adored the interactions between Tessa and Neil. He is so oblivious to her human humor sometimes, it’s hilarious. Theirs is shaping up to be a great slow burn romance.
Here are some tropes! ❤️🔥 forbidden romance 🌍 portal fantasy 🐦🔥 bonded animal companions 🧝♀️ reluctant half-fae chosen one ☀️ grumpy x sunshine 🫂 found family
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
Court of Light and Dark is the first book in the Hidden Courts of the Fae series and it has me hooked. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes us.
Tessa is just trying to keep it all together while rehabbing and training horses. Her world is turned upside down when Guardian Neil shows up proclaiming that she is the prophesied one meant to save both their worlds. Shocked to learn that she is part Fae, Tessa agrees to return to the Fae realm, Aurellia, with Neil in hopes she will learn to harness her natural healing powers and be able to save her ailing mother.
Joined by her “horse” Azriel, they make their way to Aurellia where a serious of challenges await them. The relationship between Tessa and Azriel is heartwarming, and I love the inclusion of animal companions. I struggled a bit with Neil as he can be frustrating and is hyper focused on his task, often dismissing Tessa and those around them. It is clear that all that he has been told is not true, and I am intrigued to watch him grow and develop as the story unfolds. There are hints of romance…but it is very much a slow burn. I thought the world building was fun and intriguing and loved several of the secondary characters. I’m definitely excited to see where this all goes!
Thank you to Heather D. Grace for the ARC copy of Court of Light and Dark in exchange for an honest review.
This was okay. It was easy to read with a fairly interesting plot. I liked Tessa and her little sunshiny personality. And definitely like Azriel. I mean who doesn’t love special animal sidekicks? He’s super sweet.
Okay, I need Neil to not be Mr. Stick-to-the-Rules and listen to his ‘Leath’ a little more. She seems to get it lol. I should probably add in that if he did acknowledge his feeling he might not be so grumpy! 🤣😉 But I honestly love the ‘people’ Tessa seems to pick up a long the way. It’s like they cannot resist her charms and sunshine.
I hope there is a little more action in the next book….if you know what I mean 😏! The tension is already there and Im hoping that something will spark from all of it!
First I want to thank Heather D. Grace for sending me an ARC copy! As it’s my first time receiving one, I really appreciate the opportunity!
I found I struggled a little in the beginning for this book to grab me but once it did I couldn’t stop reading it. As a big enemies to lovers/ slow burn and horse lover, this is definitely the type of book I enjoyed.
Being a horse lover my whole life, I really appreciated the fmc being a horse girlie. And her Leath…. 😍. The story building was easy to follow and enjoyable.
Now when I saw this is a slow burn…. I mean slowwww, I wish there’s a little more tension but overall it was still good. This will definitely be a series I’ll be reading as the books are released.
Looking forward for what the future brings for Tessa and Neil!
I liked it, but the plot's a little slow for my taste. It has magick, pegasus, bonded animals, fighting vibes, so if you find something you like from mentioned you'll surely like this book. Best regards and thank you for making me a part of your team. <3.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love the cover. And I love a good portal fantasy. I will say this is an extremely slow burn lol the first book is definitely all about the tension and banter. Tessa is an interesting FMC half fae and she is very reluctant to be the chosen one. Neil is her bodyguard or guardian who has a job to bring her to the Fae World. I love Az her animal companion and I enjoyed the world and characters.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was easy to read, with a lot of things happening and I liked that the side quests weren't solved immediately. I love the animal bonds and I wish I could have a leath! The world building is great, I loved the small folk, the magical creatures and the FMC learning about her magic. There a quite a few battles, which are described in detail so you have a good idea of what is going on.
Tessa is a likeable character, but sometimes I was a bit annoyed with her being so stubborn and naive. Neil is still a mystery to me, but I liked the few chapters that were from his POV. I am not feeling the tension between them (yet), but I can't wait to find out about Tessa's and Neil's next adventures!
I found this book to be such an easy read. If I didn't have any distractions, I'd have finished it in a day! This book follows a girl named Tessa, who is a horse trainer. She always thought of herself as just a human but all that changes when Neil, finds her and tells her she is half human/half fae. She is shocked to find it's true when her mother confirms it. Neil tells her she is the chosen one who is supposed to save the fae realm and she needs to leave with him to go to the Courts immediately. Not only are there fae, but Phoenix, Pegasus, Skáith, Small people who stand two and threw feet tall. There is magic and action. One thing I found I LOVED about Tessa is that she is caring and will do anything for the people she cares about; including going on her own to fight the Skáith. Neil is funny, as he doesn't understand human words or things and he is more on the grumpy side of grumpy x sunshine. I love how the book is in Tessa's and Neil's pov. I've already started book two and I cannot wait to see where this series goes! Big thanks to the author, Heather, for letting me ARC this book. I enjoyed it SO much!
I kindly received an ARC ebook version of Court of Light and Dark from Heather D Grace.
This was a fun read that reminded me of an adventure computer game I had on my Atari ST as a kid, with the main adventure and side quests along the way. Guardian Neil and his phoenix Ezra had Ladyhawke vibes, but without the transformations.
Loved the world building and a persons magic type being reflected in their eyes.
That ending! Can't wait to see where the next book takes Tessa, Az and their little band of adventurers next!
Thank you to author Heather D. Grace for sending me an ARC copy of her book in exchange for an honest review. This was a quick read, and overall I liked the storyline and the journey/world that this series is creating. I found the mix of the modern-day human realm and the fae realm an interesting twist from what I've mostly been reading as of late.
Tessa was relatable and down to earth. She has normal, everyday worries and stresses until Neil shows up and tells her who she is and that she needs to come with him. She seems to be someone who had to be independent and help take care of things most of her life and that mindset doesn't disappear once she enters the fae realm. This personality type always makes for some interesting side quests as they journey on their main objective.
Neil seemed a bit awkward and a bit out of place with some of his thoughts toward Tessa and very stuffy in his personality at the beginning. Maybe this was trying to show some inner turmoil of having to be "by the book", but wanting to give in to something he wants for himself. I liked him more as he relaxed a bit, but I think his guardian rules might hold a bigger power over him for now. Giving this a slow-burn feel, even though he is very comfortable with heat.
I really liked the relationship between Tessa and Azriel. You can feel his protectiveness of her and his joy at helping her. I also enjoyed the quick friendship Tessa made with Kali, showing Tessa's compassion and acceptance of others and always wanting to help. I think this is going to be an important element of Tessa's mission.
I'm interested to see where this journey goes, and where all of these newly formed relationships take us.
A very interesting take on half fae, I do love the connection with the animals, I can't wait to see what else Tessa can do, since she just found out about part of her heritage and has to learn how to be a part of the fae world
This book is an absolute gem! ✨ From the moment Tessa, working at her mum's equine barn, rescues that mysterious stallion, I was completely hooked. Her world gets flipped upside down with revelations of her half-fae heritage and three hidden realms – it's all brilliantly done!
The characters? So easy to love! 🥰 Tessa, the FMC, goes on this wild journey of self-discovery that's super gripping. I especially adored her innate need to help others, especially the small folk; her compassion really shines through. And Guardian Neil? Utterly swoon-worthy, even with that whole forbidden thing going on between them. His frustration with Tessa's eagerness to help is just hilarious! The constant bickering between him and the Leath Pegasus adds such a fantastic layer of humor and tension to their mission.
The plot is a fast-paced, thrilling adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat. The stakes are so high with the fae's magic being stripped away, and I felt Tessa's urgency to stop the kidnappers at every turn. The world-building is rich and imaginative, bringing the Fae Realm to life.
If you're into intricate magic systems and awesome characters like those in Sarah J. Maas or the captivating fantasy romances by Jennifer L. Armentrout, you HAVE to read Court of Light and Dark. It's a fantastic blend of hidden magics, thrilling adventure, and a forbidden romance that'll leave you desperate for the next book! 🤩 Five stars all the way! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I am so pleased to have been allowed an early e-read of this book! This is the first in a new series and follows Tessa as she discovers the father she never knew was fae, and she is half fae. Tessa is tracked down by fae Neil and convinced to leave the human realm and her ill mother behind to travel to the realm of Aurellia. As 'The Chosen One', Tessa is needed in Auriella to save the realm and all within it. Along the way, she needs to learn how to use and control any powers she may possess.
I really enjoyed reading this and learning about the different creatures and characters of Aurellia. I loved the bond between fae and leath, an animal with a special bond with a fae, said to be the other half of their soul. There's adventures, battle scenes, truce and pacts, new friendships, unrequited love...(or is it??). Did I already mention the amazing animal bond? The final scene ends as the adventure takes an unexpected turn, leaving the reader both excited and anxious for what comes next. Perfect for fantasy and romantasy readers.
This was an okay book. I enjoyed the characters and overall storyline. The POV switching was good but I wish the story had started with Neil as the first chapter. The first chapter took me forever to get into and I felt Neil’s chapter didn’t do that. The author has a tendency to over explain things that which then takes longer and makes it drag at times. We can make some inferences for ourselves. I was also not a fan of the timeline. It felt like many things they did were rushed like teaching Tessa to fight in a couple of hours. She wasn’t any good but it was like they expected she should be? But how with so little training?
Overall, I am interested in continuing the story and finding out what happens to Tessa and Neil and to see how the author develops over time
This is the first book in the Hidden Courts of the Fae series. Thank you Heather for an arc copy of this book. I really enjoyed getting to know Tessa and Guardian Neil, learning about the world, the bonds, etc. I definitely enjoyed getting to know the animal leaths as well.
If you’re looking for a low-spice, heart-tugging fae fantasy romance with a slow-burn connection that aches in all the best ways… this one absolutely swept me away. ✨🧚♀️💛
From the very first chapter, I was hooked by Tessa—our half-human, half-fae heroine who had no idea her bloodline was about to drag her into a war spanning three realms. 💔🌌 Watching her peaceful life on her family’s mountainside equine facility unravel was both emotional and exhilarating. And oh my heart… her bond with her Pegasus? Simply magical. 🐴✨ Their loyalty, protection, and understanding were some of my favorite parts of the entire story. It gave the book such a warm, grounding center amidst all the chaos.
Just when Tessa’s world was already spiraling, a gruff, frustratingly handsome fae named Neil arrived with glowing eyes, fiery energy, and a prophecy heavy enough to crush anyone. 🔥👀 He told her she was half-fae, gifted with healing magic she barely understood—and that she was the key to stopping demons from enslaving the fae and destroying the human world. The stakes felt so real, and I found myself clinging to every chapter 💥😢.
Being forced through a portal into Neil’s realm, watching Tessa struggle with trust, magic, and danger at every turn, made me ache for her. 😭✨ She had anxiety, doubts, fears—she felt real. So relatable, especially for my anxious girlies 🫶😩. She was terrified but kept moving. Confused but kept learning. And her healing magic? Watching it awaken was genuinely inspiring. 🌿💫
The journey through dark forests, magical courts, terrifying creatures, and mysterious allies made the book feel richly adventurous. 🗺️🐉 And the tension between Tessa and Neil? Slow. Burn. The kind where every glance feels electric, every touch means something, and every moment hints at a connection neither fully understood. 🔥💗 Their dynamic wasn’t rushed, and I loved that so much.
The plot went deeper than I expected—vanishing fae returning without magic, dying in agonizing ways; demons hunting them relentlessly; and a prophecy that never stopped looming. It kept me turning pages late into the night. 🌙⚔️ The emotional weight, the danger, the budding trust… it all blended beautifully.
And then THE CLIFFHANGER. I am feral. 🫠🔪 I need book 2 right now.
Here are the tropes and vibes that made this book a delight: 🐴 Animal companion magic (Pegasus!!!) ✨ Slow-burn romance 🌿 Hidden powers & magical awakening 🧚♂️ Half-fae heroine discovering her heritage ⚔️ Prophecies & demons 🗝️ Portal fantasy 😩 Grumpy x anxious/soft pairing 👑 Exploring multiple realms 💞 Found family friendships 🌪️ Adventure-filled journey with high stakes
If you love Magical Creatures and Where to Find Them vibes, unique beasts, rich worldbuilding, and character-driven romantasy… this one is for you. 💖📚✨
This book was fast-paced, vivid, emotional, and wonderfully immersive. I loved watching Tessa grow, face terrifying truths, and start to embrace the power within her. I genuinely cannot wait to see where her journey takes her next. 🥺💫
A huge thank you to the author and The Nerd Fam for the ARC opportunity 💖🙏✨
Court of Light and Dark is the first book in Grace's new Hidden Courts of the Fae series. This a slow burn, urban fantasy romance featuring Tessa and Neil.
Neil is a Guardian from the fae realm. He is one of several who have been tasked with searching for the prophecy's Chosen One - the fae who will help stop the skàth who are overtaking Aurellia. He has been searching the human realm for some time with Ezra, his Leath, a phoenix. (Leath is a bonded mate, the other half of their soul.)
While Tessa always thought she was just a normal girl who spent her days working with horses, Neil's arrival changes everything. She learns that her father, Carson Crane, was fae making her half-fae. Neil and Ezra believe her to be the Chosen One. The only reason they convince her to come with them, to travel through a portal into Aurellia is that her fae half apparently has healing abilities and her mother is sick. Her plan is to go to Aurellia, save their realm and learn how to master these abilities so that she can return home and heal her mother. She has no idea what is in store...
While Neil is accompanied by Ezra, Tessa is accompanied by a stallion (Azriel) she rescued. They travel a ways to get to the portal before it disappears. Upon passing through the group is immediately attacked and taken by small folk. The quartet is dragged back to stand trial for the abduction of some of their people. As it turns out, it was not the fae who are responsible but rather the skàth. The only way Neil and Tessa can continue on their way to the Court is to help locate and rescue the kidnapped small folk which means facing the beings that are threatening the realm.
I had so much fun reading this book. I was quickly captivated by the story, and I thoroughly enjoy the characters. Tessa is a lovely individual with a big heart. She has compassion and a desire to help. Neil is a bit of a stick in the mud. He is accustomed to following rules and doing what he's told but Tessa keeps challenging everything and asking a million questions, driving him batty. I love their duo's banter as well as Azriel's protective nature, always trying to keep Neil away from her.
The author did a wonderful job creating this realm of magic and fantasy. I can't wait to read the next installment. The second book, Court of Fire and Ash, is expected some time before the end of the year. I'll be eagerly waiting.
Disclosure: I received an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book in exchange for an honest review. As someone who loves supporting indie authors, I always aim to share thoughtful, fair feedback. While I have personal reading preferences—like a love for fantasy, horses, or specific tropes—I never let that impact my rating unless it's relevant to the book’s intent or audience. I review with the genre and readership in mind.
As a lifelong horse lover, I was immediately drawn to Court of Light and Dark the moment I saw the cover and read the blurb. And let me say—this book did not disappoint. The horse elements were so well done. It’s rare to see accurate, up-to-date equestrian terminology and behavior woven naturally into an epic fantasy, and it was such a treat. Whether the author has a horsey background or just did some stellar research, the result made my inner horse girl incredibly happy. I can easily imagine this book becoming a favorite for horse book lovers who are growing into more mature fantasy.
The slow burn romance is, well, very slow—and kind of burning. Personally, I would’ve loved a bit more emotional development in the falling-in-love part, but I completely understand the appeal. If I were a teenager again, a strong, protective, mysterious man offering safety and trust? That would’ve made me swoon too.
The worldbuilding in this first installment is rich and complex. You get a strong sense of the world’s history, the magic system, and the looming threats, but also a glimpse at real-world issues and thoughtful commentary that adds deeper layers to the story. There are so many little mysteries and hints dropped throughout the book that have me eagerly awaiting the next one—I can tell there’s a lot more to uncover.
I also saw some character artwork that was absolutely gorgeous, and now I can’t help but hope we’ll get more visuals as the series goes on!
If you enjoy thoughtful worldbuilding, horse-rich fantasy, slow-burn romance, and stories that nod to real-life struggles within a magical setting, this is definitely a book to check out. I’ll be following the series closely.
What do you do when your unknown past comes barreling in??
Tessa is trying to hold things together…working with horses…especially the recently adopted stallion…while worrying about her mother’s health.
One afternoon as she’s working with the horses…things start going ‘weird’. There’s the ‘hawk’ that she would swear has flames for wings…making her think she’s seen a phoenix.
It seems to ‘dive-bomb’ her…then swoops into the surrounding forest. Following to ensure that no fires are started (as Colorado is dealing with forest fires), she wanders into the bordering national forest…and comes across an unattended camp fire. She puts it out, & after coming across the ‘camper’, quickly heads back to her ranch…
Only to come across the path of a mountain lion…then other ‘odd’ creatures…
Then the camper (aka Neil) shows up at her home…shortly after her mom get’s home & drops the ‘news’—she’s the Chosen one & half-fae. Needless to say…that’s news to Tessa, as her mother never really talked about her father or their time together.
The presence of Neil…the phoenix…the scarred stallion & others…seems to be awakening Tessa’s dormant fae abilities…
According to Neil…Tessa as the chosen one would help bring back the pegasus & unicorns…helping to save three different realms…Tessa, on the other hand is interested in coming into there powers so that she can hopefully save her mother.
The start of their journey is bumpy & when they cross back into the fae realm? Nothing goes as planned…
Needless to say…Tessa & Neil are at ‘odds’ on & off throughout the book. Neil wants to complete the mission & get to the court to see if Tessa actually is the Chosen One…while Tessa wants to help the small folk & learn how to harness her healing powers..
I loved this introduction to the Hidden Court of the Fae & can’t wait for the next book to see what adventures Tessa & Neil end up as they try to make their way to the Fae court…including the slow-burn, simmering romance between the two…I do agree with the assessment the pegasus has of Neil towards the end of the book.
Imagine working tirelessly on your family's farm, training hardheaded horses so your clients can enjoy riding them and all of a sudden, your life is flipped upside down. From seeing a hawk in the sky in flames, being attacked by a mountain lion, saving a cat with multiple appendages to being saved by a purple eyed, handsome man who appeared out of nowhere.
Tessa is over it. She is overwhelmed with work and worrying about her mother's declining health. Her day gets a lot weirder when she is told by a handsome stranger named Neil that she is a fae prophesized to help his people. Tessa thinks this handsome stranger is off his rockers and out of his mind until her mother finally confesses the truth about her father whom Tessa never meant. Now with confirmation that fae blood runs through her veins and her mother's demand that she has an adventure.
This was a fun story to read. Tessa learning about her abilities as well as learning that her newly adopted stallion is actually an injured Pegasus horse who is actually her bonded other half. To watch Tessa's magic grow as well as her knowledge for magical portals and realms was a treat.
Tessa and her Guardian Neil have so much tension between the two of them. Neil is always grumpy and has tunnel vision when it comes to completing his mission trying desperately to keep his attraction to Tessa at bay; and poor Tessa is so giving and helpful she can't help but wear her heart her sleeve.
Tessa is on an adventure of a lifetime with her newly adopted Pegasus at her side every step of the way. I can't wait to see what's next in store for Tessa and Neil. I also can't wait to see Tessa's interactions with her soul bonded Pegasus; now that he is healing and their connection is getting stronger, I believe he will assist Tessa is discovering her full potential and thus bringing the prophecy to fruition.

This was an easy to read fantasy with some slow burn tension.
It took me a while to get caught by the story, but it is an enjoyable read, with mythical animal bonds, an interesting magic concept, the beginnings of what I’m guessing will lead to a big evil vs good conflict and sweet side characters.
Tessa seems to be a very down to earth character; bold but also caring. She’s easy to warm up to with her compassion for others. I enjoyed seeing her bond with Azriel start, and that element I’m intrigued to see grow stronger and see where the author takes it. Neil took a bit longer to relax and show some more aspects of himself, but when his protective side showed itself things started to pick up a bit. I’d like to see his character develop a bit more so readers can relate to him a bit more. The groundwork for relationships, both romantic and friendship, has been laid to develop in future books.
I feel like there were high expectations on Tessa to have fighting skills and understanding how to use her magic, when 1) she didn't even know about magic and the fae and 2) her physical history only went as far as horse riding, not combat. The training section, both magical and physical felt a tad rushed to believe she suddenly had such a grasp on those elements.
Otherwise this is an fairly solid debut, and an easy read. I’d hope to learn more about the fae lands, the folk in it and more about the bonds between the creatures and their partners in future books.
This story does use adult language throughout, though there are no graphic scenes, all slow burn tension at this point. However, I’d recommend guidance before allowing younger readers to read this story.
I received this as an ARC book, all thoughts and opinions are my own, my thanks to the author for including me in her ARC team.
The premise of this book is pretty interesting. It follows (human) horse trainer Tessa who gets a malnourished, scarred horse at an auction. A mysterious man named Neil shows up at her ranch one day and tells her that she is the chosen one and is the only one who can save the fae realm (and the world). Neil also claims that her horse is actually a Pegasus from the fae realm and that he is her Leath (animal companion that is the other half of her soul). Tessa thinks he’s completely off his rocker, but then her mom tells her that she thinks Tessa’s dad was fae, which would make her half fae. What ensues is a high stakes adventure into the fae realm as Tessa grapples with her journey of self discovery as the supposed chosen one of prophecy.
This book was very interesting to me at first but then slowed down quite a bit. I’m thinking it’s because it’s the first in an ongoing series (I believe the author said 6 books), so hopefully things pick up a bit in book 2! It’s a very slow burn with major grumpy x sunshine vibes (one of my favs) and we don’t learn a lot about Tessa’s past or the realm she’s supposed to save in this book. We are introduced to the dark force that is threatening to destroy the realm, but there are still so many unanswered questions. I really enjoyed the relationship between her and her Pegasus Leath, Azriel. The banter/dynamic between Neil and Azriel is pretty funny. It was also fun following along while Tessa attempts to learn to use her magic.
I’m excited to see what happens next in book 2! Thank you to Heather D. Grace for the ARC copy!
Thank you Heather D. Grace for sending me this arc, I loved it! This book reminded me a lot of The Golden Compass how their souls are an animal form outside of their bodies. This book has something very similar vibes in that regard. The Fae in this book connected with their Leath (a fae animal bond that is half their soul) at the age of thirteen. As the fae and leath grow stronger as their bond forms. As someone who is a huge animal lover I really loved this aspect in the book.
The plot in this book was good, there’s a prophecy the main fmc is destined to fulfill this prophecy while discovering more about herself in the process. As the plot continues the side characters that get thrown in add so much to the book. They had me laughing at our poor Neil a few times 🤭
Tessa is our Fmc. She’s kind, very caring, stubborn, strong willed, and has a very sunny deposition. She’s a huge animal lover and a nature girlie! I love Tessa she’s a character I relate to a lot and I found her parts fun to read.
Neil is our mmc. Can someone get this man a guide book on how to read a room 😂😅 I love Neil but poor boy was down right oblivious sometimes. He’s very grumpy, determined, passionate, stubborn, and protective. And his eyes 🥵 I feel like I would get lost in them all day!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and the side quest that Tessa and Neil go on. I can’t wait to see how many side quests these two go on until they complete their main goal!
Tropes: 🐦🔥 Forbidden Romance 🐦🔥 Quests 🐦🔥 Prophecies & Mysteries 🐦🔥 Magic Training 🐦🔥 Sunny Vs. Grumpy 🐦🔥 Animal sidekick
Thank you to the author for the gifted paperback copy. Opinions are my own.
If you're like me and you love animal bonds, a banter-filled slow burn romance and a reluctant chosen one heroine, you need to check out this book!
Court of Light and Dark follows Tessa, a horse trainer whose life changes significantly when she meets Neil, a stranger who turns out to be a fae and who gives her several shocking news: she is a half fae-half human, the scarred stallion she rescued is actually her bonded pegasus and she is the Chosen One in a prophecy, destined to save three realms. Though reluctant, Tessa has her own reasons to follow Neil back to his Court. In fact, she hopes to learn to harness her healing magic in order to save her mother, who has cancer.
This is the perfect read if you're looking for a story that will have you breezing through the pages! While this is very much an introduction to the main conflict, it doesn't lack its own complete story arc and plenty of exciting action. The grumpy/sunshine banter between Neil and Tessa is so fun, and I'm in love with the Bonded Animals aspect of the story, especially the telepathic chats. Tessa is also a fantastic protagonist. Though she is reluctant to believe in her role as the Chosen One, her selflessness is ultimately what draws her into this adventure. Not only are her motivations noble, but she also doesn't shy away from helping those in need that she meets along the way. I'm very excited to see her powers grow throughout the series.
Here are some tropes to look forward to: - reluctant chosen one - Grumpy x sunshine - Slow burn romance - Prophecies - Portal magic - Urban fantasy setting - Animal bonds
