We Were Meant to Burn

Rate this book
A mercenary with secrets. An assassin raised to be a weapon. A love that was never meant to survive.

Nix Zaldanna was never meant to fall in love. As the infamous Nightshade of Rojas, she was trained to kill, to obey, to serve. But when she is captured and left to rot in the dungeons of the enemy king, she waits for the Empress to come for her.

Except the rescue never comes.

Instead, she’s freed by Malakai—a fae warrior whose loyalty is as questionable as his past. He claims he needs her, that she’s part of something bigger than the war she was raised to fight. But Nix doesn’t trust mercenaries. And she especially doesn’t trust a man who makes her question everything she’s ever known.

But the more she fights him, the more she fights herself. Because the war isn’t as simple as she once believed. And neither is Malakai.

Betrayed by the empire that made her, bound to a man she doesn’t trust, Nix must decide whether to burn for the future she was promised—or forge a new one in the ashes of the lies she’s been told.

Perfect for fans of The Bridge Kingdom, The Shadows Between Us, and An Ember in the Ashes, We Were Meant to Burn delivers slow-burn romance, enemies-to-lovers tension, and a world where love is as dangerous as war.

A delicious dark fantasy romance with slow burn and amazing banter. The author did an amazing job at the very beginning of the book to have you immersed in the story and needing to know what is going to happen. This book is very well-paced, full of emotional depth, and I fell in love with the characters. We have great world-building, the magic system was intriguing, and good character growth and development.

Our FMC Nix, is an assassin trained to be a weapon, the infamous Nightshade of Rojas. However, she ends up getting captured by the enemy king. Then she is rescued by Malakai, a morally grey mercenary and fae warrior. He tells her he needs her for something than what she has been trained for, but she doesn't trust him.

What to Expect
🔥Mercenary vs. Assassin
🔥Slow Burn
🔥Forbidden love
🔥Found Family
🔥Enemies to lovers
🔥Forced Proximity

The slow burn in this story was absolutely tormenting in the best possible way. The banter and tension were chef's kiss. I also loved the way the author intertwined Latino culture into the story. This was an amazing story about betrayal, identity, power, love, and choice vs. fate!

We Were Meant to Burn was an excellent Romantasy that completely swept me away. I loved Nix she’s strong, resilient, and fierce and Malakai? Absolute cinnamon roll perfection. He melted me in the best way, and I’m officially obsessed.

The journey these characters go on adds so much excitement, and the found family element was beautifully done. Watching them slowly come together and form those bonds gave the story so much heart. The animal sidekick? Totally stole the show. And the slow burn romance? Torturously slow in the best, most satisfying way.

I truly loved this book. It’s well-paced, deeply romantic, and full of emotional depth. That twist at the end had me reeling, and now I’m counting down the days until book two.

Highly recommend if you love a well-crafted, emotionally rich Romantasy. Huge thanks to the author for the gifted ARC. We Were Meant to Burn releases August 5th!

ARC Review: We Were Meant to Burn by Nicolette Elzie
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I went into this expecting a unique fantasy—and what I got was an unforgettable story that completely hooked me from the start.

This book blends everything I love about fantasy and romantasy: a richly imagined world where magic intertwines with modern technology, a looming war, ancient power struggles, and a romance that simmers beneath the surface until it threatens to consume you.

Nix is a powerful, beautifully flawed protagonist. She’s strong, spicy, and emotionally scarred—both inside and out. Her trauma feels real, and her resilience is written with so much care. And Malakai? He’s sly, cocky, and dangerous, with just the right amount of mystery. He carries his own darkness, but only lets Nix see what lies beneath his sharp edges.

Their relationship is a true slow burn, full of tension, heartache, vulnerability, and chemistry. It’s the kind of bond that doesn’t just catch fire—it smolders and ignites in a way that feels earned.

Beyond the romance, the story dives into themes of trust, loyalty, betrayal, grief, and what it really means to find family and belonging. The world-building is vivid without being overwhelming, and the pacing never lets you go.

I honestly wasn’t ready for it to end—and now I’m desperate for book two. Highly recommend to any romantasy fans who love their stories dark, emotional, and utterly magical.

I received this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Honest Rating: 4.5 🌟

The amount of hype I have been seeing on social media about this book gave me the FOMO. This book is well worth the hype & deserves more of it.

Throne of Glass vibes. A woman with fire in her veins, true heir to the throne, trained to be a weapon of death. Her true identity & lineage hidden by the woman she called mother. Captured by the enemy in a battle, she is imprisoned for 6 months. A rescue team is paid to save her from the prison. During her journey to where her new fate lays, she learns truths about herself, is forced to face her shadows, and discovers a found family.

There is a plot twist and a cliff hanger ending. It's honestly such a fun & emotionally impactful read.

First, thank you to the author for allowing me to read this as an ARC. Truly a great experience!

I enjoyed the hell out of this. The characters were people that I could cling to quickly and the story had the right drive to keep me on the edge of my seat. This is truly a unique story with a complex magic system. The world-building could use some refining though. This is me just nitpicking honestly, but they’re traipsing around a jungle for more than half the book and they’re hunting turkeys? In a jungle? 🥴 I think not…I’m hoping the little details get a little more ironed out in book 2. Sometimes the little details make the biggest difference.

Nix is incredibly infuriating, I’m not gonna lie. Girl doesn’t ever learn a lesson. Itching for more character development out of her in book 2 as well. She seems like a complete badass who has incredible potential (we haven’t even seen her full abilities in action) but the repetitive self-hate makes me wanna wring her neck. Like girl recognize you’re badass and ACT ON IT.

Malakai though? My mans is perfect. Perfect mix of charming golden retriever and broody protector. I’m not sure that I’ve ever encountered an MMC quite like him and that truly excites me.

Also, foul foul FOUL cliffhanger at the end. What am I supposed to do now? Book 1 isn’t even out yet and I’m sat waiting for book 2 😃

I was lucky enough to get an ARC. I’m someone who reads quick and often, usually half skimming stories in my rush to get to the next page. But not here, not from the very beginning but for the best reason. I realized in the very first chapter that this was a book to be savored. The overall touches of latino culture, well described details and world building set the groundwork for a story I am so eager to get the next taste of. Not to mention the excellent slow burn, banter and longing that had me happy kicking my feet.

The only negative to an ARC is the wait for the next one. A lovely story, highly recommend.

*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*

The beginning was so good, I love when an author knows just what to say and do in the first chapter to get you excited to continue reading on.

There were a lot of times where there was just too much wording, too many thoughts and describing of things, where a lot of the times I was like just get back to the story, I don’t need two pages of describing one thing in detail haha.

It’s weird for me at least to comprehend castle, swords, wars/battles, dungeons and then there being tech, like cameras and comms, motorcycles and helicopters. What sort of a world do they live in?

I do love the growth of Nix’s character. I started to really understand her and her inner struggles. I also love the found family. Who doesn’t love a bunch of fun and crazy mercenaries?

It starts to pick up probably around 30% in and it gets good. I was freaking hooked, couldn’t put it down.

She does wander off a lot, after everything that’s happened, you’d think she would know better. That kept frustrating me. Like I kind of wanted her to get very badly hurt because of her stupidity, I was annoyed for the group, jeez Louise lol. I can’t fault her for acting bratty and childish at times because of how she grew up, but I draw the line at stupidity.

The story is complex and has a lot of information. I appreciate the details and everything the world entails. It was to keep up with all the information but that’s cause I’m not good at retaining information from high fantasy, so that’s on me.

I would have liked a chapter from Malakai’s perspective.

Don’t get me wrong though, still loved it and will continue to read to see what happens. I have to know what freaking happens!

My fav line/part:

"You hesitate every time you look at me. Do I scare you, or is it something worse?"

Slowly, Malakai reached out, lifting my chin with a single finger. His touch was featherlight, but it sent a jolt of something unfamiliar down my spine. "Something worse," he whispered, his voice rough and low, like gravel smoothed over time. "Definitely worse."

ARC Review

4.5/5 stars!

We Were Meant To Burn brings us Nix, an assassin trained to be a weapon, who gets captured by the enemy, only to be rescued by Malakai, a fae warrior and mercenary. Malakai claims to need her for something far bigger than the war she's known to fight in. Nix must discover who to trust and decide her own fate, the future promised to her or a future she chooses to make.

Oh my goodness. I have seen so many people reading this, so when I finally got around to reading it, I knew it was going to blow me away. I was hooked from the very first chapter to the last few pages. Although I am not too fond of cliffhangers (because I'd want to dive right into book 2 right away), I absolutely loved the way the author does it. It was captivating and addicting!

I loved seeing the Spanish and Aztec influences into this story. I especially love Xixi and wished I had my own bonded alebrije. The other characters made it so much fun to watch their development and journey. I appreciate how strong Nix is and I love her strength. Malakai? I'll take one to go please! I loved him from the very first time he appeared. The slow burn was real! I loved the tension and loved the fiery elements to describe how much they burn for each other.

I cannot wait for the next book!!

Thank you to Nicolette Elzie for the opportunity to read this as an ARC! All my honest thoughts and opinions are my own.

Listen… We Were Meant to Burn is a deliciously dark dive into everything I love about romantasy.

Nix Zaldanna is the kind of heroine who walks out of the flames stronger, scarred, sharp, and absolutely unforgettable. The infamous Nightshade doesn't bend easily, and neither does her heart.

Then there’s Malakai. The morally gray fae mercenary with secrets thicker than the fog he walks through.

Their banter? Sharp. The tension between them? Whew. It’s a slow-burn inferno that had me holding my breath (and maybe screaming at my Kindle a little). The trust issues? Deeply earned.

What really stands out is the emotional undercurrent, betrayal, identity, power, and the choice to burn it all down or build something new from the ashes.
It’s twisty, tense, and layered in all the best ways.
But that ending? I'm emotionally unwell.

If you're into fantasy worlds full of secrets and betrayals, you'll enjoy this one.

Huge thanks to Nicolette for the early copy, and congrats on this 🔥 release, Can’t wait for the next in the series!

Badass assassin FMC x Mercenary MMC
HE CALLS HER MUÑECA 😩🤭🧎🏻‍♀️

He kidnaps her as for a job but they fall for each other during the months it takes them to get where she is supposed to be left 🫶🏼 I loved that she’s finding herself thought out this journey with him and his friends but also learning about who she really is (kinda gave Rapunzel vibes 🤪) I loved all the characters and this slow burn was worth the wait! I just wasn’t expecting there to be a cliffhanger 😩😩😩 need book 2 immediately!!! 🧎🏻‍♀️🧎🏻‍♀️🧎🏻‍♀️

ARC Review: Thank you to Nicolette Elize for this arc copy of her book. There is so much that happens in this book as it spans across the time frame of a year. There were small sections of the book that I felt probably made it longer than was necessary. But all in all, the action, the slow burn and the tension made for a satisfying read and I’m looking forward to the next book and seeing where Nix’s journey goes

She’s meant to be this deadly assassin but for the whole book she is just this weak woe is me girl whose incredibly annoying. I’m 430 pages in and nothings happened, it’s just them walking through this deadly forest. Repeating the same things about how Elias is teaching her about plants and she gets attacked again because she walked to far from the group 🙄 god it was so boring and way to long. I really wanted to just finish it but I can’t

(Full disclosure, I was lucky to get an e-ARC with no strings attached. All views are my own.)
I just finished the book and was ready to give a standing ovation. Movie adaptation will need NO notes for that ending.
Loved this slow-burning novella with all its twists and turns. I've read several of the magical-romantasy books that are popular right now, and if this doesn't go right up there with them something is wrong with the world.
Go get yourself a copy and have no regrets.

WOW! What an introduction for me to Nicolette Elzie!!

I was so lucky to have the opportunity to beta read We Were Meant To Burn, the first book in Nicolette’s new Ashes and Ruin Saga, and I definitely can’t wait to dive into more of her past and future books!

What I loved about the book:
1. I loved all the fantasy within the story!! The worldbuilding was epic! There are so many beings and so many things going on between creepers in the night and technology that was super scary in its own right. There are going to be so many obstacles and challenges going forward and I can’t wait to see our group overcome them.

2. I loved that there wasn’t just one enemy! From “family” to entire political regimes, there was literally no one but this tight found family group that they could rely on, especially going forward in the series! I’m going to love watching each and every one of them get taken out.

3. I loved that Nix wasn’t a Mary Sue. There were so many things she didn’t know how to do because she was trained to be an assassin only and had people to do her hair, pitch a tent, etc. I loved even more that instead of being mad and trying to hide her shortcomings, she totally just went with it. She knew she didn’t have a lot of skills and she owned up to it and tried to learn along the way. WE LOVE A SELF AWARE QUEEN!!

4. Speaking of Nix I loved that the book set up her being a weapon who is done being a weapon; someone who has now lost the only things/people who matter to her after being taught to feel, and she is pissed and going for revenge!! I’m so giddy to see the evolution of Nix!!

5. I absolutely fell for Malakai 😍 I seriously could not keep my thoughts to myself every time this man came on page and found myself constantly going to Nicolette with my swooning. He is a leader of a misfit group, he is meticulous and smart, he teaches rather than mocks. He was literally the whole package and so perfect for Nix at every part of her journey so far; I expect he will remain perfect for her through the remaining phases of her evolution 😊 OH! And he calls her “Love” and “Doll”, two of my favorite terms of endearment!!!

6. While their relationship is definitely a slow burn, the tension and chemistry between Malakai and Nix was PALPABLE and so AMAZING!!! So many times I caught myself not breathing while indulging in their back and forth and I don’t regret it one bit.

7. I loved the found family and set of characters in this little ragtag group.

Dom was brooding but you know the man had everyone’s back.

Elias was creative and the group healer.

Lian was her first friend and such a sweetie.

Kerun was the young gun adopted in the group last who is growing up while going through all this stuff with the group. I can’t wait to see what comes of him.

And freaking XIXI! I loved mischievous XIXI so much!!! I loved the telepathy with Nix, I loved her growth spurts, and I loved her loyalty to Nix (IYKYK).

8. I loved that there was a bit of spice to this; not overly, but also not closed door. It was perfect for the characters and where they were in their journey.

If you can’t tell, I’m incredibly excited to see where this series goes!! Make sure you don’t miss out on this one!

Thank you so much to Nicolette Elzie for the opportunity to beta read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.

4.5 stars!

We Were Meant to Burn by Nicolette Elzie completely wrecked me—in the best, most soul-aching way possible. This book is everything I’ve ever wanted in a fantasy novel: found family, enemies-to-lovers, slow burn, yearning, betrayal, morally grey characters, and a magic system so immersive it felt like stepping into another realm. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC, and I’m genuinely honored—because this wasn’t just a book, it was an experience!

The plot follows Nix, a girl who’s kidnapped by a tyrannical king who wants to use her as a weapon to create magical heirs. When Malakai and Dom rescue her, she believes her mother finally came for her—but soon discovers the truth is far more complicated. The journey that follows is one of self-discovery, freedom, and trust, as Nix learns what it truly means to be part of something bigger than herself. From the moment Nix is taken, you're plunged into a fast-paced, emotionally charged world, where every twist feels more devastating than the last.

The heart of this story lies in its characters. The banter, the inside jokes, the grudging respect that turns into fierce loyalty—it all made the story feel so alive. Every character (Nix, Malakai, Dom, XiXi, Elias, Lian, Kerun) is uniquely crafted, and you end up falling in love with all of them in different ways. Nix is everything I want in a protagonist—fierce, layered, flawed, and ultimately someone you want to fight for. Watching her grow and soften, while still keeping that fiery edge, is perfection. And Malakai? He is the slow-burn hero of my dreams. Loyal, patient, morally grey, and melt-worthy, he has me swooning with every interaction.

As for the romance, it's the slow burn that ruins all other slow burns. It’s enemies-to-lovers at its finest—filled with tension, longing, and those tiny moments that hit you harder than any kiss. Their relationship builds like a storm, quiet at first, then inevitable. The emotional tension is off the charts, and though the spice level is medium, it doesn’t need to be anything more. The slow, delicious build-up makes every moment feel earned.

The worldbuilding is equally captivating. Nicolette Elzie has crafted a lush, gritty world that feels as real as it is fantastical. The Alebrijes were such a magical, unexpected touch that I absolutely loved! The magic system feels both unique and grounded, and every bit of worldbuilding serves the characters, enriching their journey instead of overshadowing it.

By the time the cliffhanger hits, you’re left with a burning need to know what happens next. I need the sequel immediately! This book was a complete emotional rollercoaster, and yet I couldn’t recommend it more!

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

🔥 Tropes:
Magic
Unique lore
Goddesses
Animal sidekick
Banter
Slow burn
Enemies to lovers
Enemies to friends
Mexican/hispanic folk lore inspired elements
Found family
Sarcastic and hot MMC

🔥 Wow wow wow. Infinity stars ♾️. This book was an absolutely wonderful action packed read from page one. Nicolette Elzie has created a beautiful world and fantastic characters. This is not going to be a series where you “just have to get through the first book and it gets good”. NO THIS FIRST BOOK WAS PHENOMENAL.

Elzie uses beautiful, not overwhelming descriptions of her world. I could easily picture the room we were standing in, without feeling like half of the book was just describing forests or rooms. I like the tech mixed with the magic. Usually magic in fantasy I’ve read is in a universe with no technology or any advancements. This universe has magic AND technology (think hunger games-esque mutant tech beasts), which I found fascinating.

The lore overall was Mexican or Hispanic inspired (I am not an expert in Mexican lore by any means)x which I found super unique and very fun to read! There’s alebrijes, goddesses, elemental based magic, and so much more.

The FMC, Nix is full of self hatred, sarcasm, and anger, but she’s open to healing (she doesn’t know that yet though). Shes strong, in personality and physical power. She’s had a rough childhood, and some intense magic and warrior training throughout her life, but she still manages to maintain a good heart (though she doesn’t think she’s good). It was amazing to watch her heal and grow.

The MMC, Malakai, is equally as powerful, and he’s immortal (oh and handsome). He’s a leader of a haphazard band of brothers, and is a supporter of the under dog. He’s got a silver tongue, and has a sarcastic quip for just about everything but he’s so lovable.

All of the other characters are equally as lovable, funny, and unique. I miss them all already. I really felt like I was on this journey with them. Be warned: This book is a SLOW BURN, for sure. It’ll have you screaming “JUST SHUT UP AND KISS ALREADY”. There’s beautifully written angst and sadness that gives you the deep clenching feeling in your chest.

I laughed, cried, smiled, laughed again, gasped (sent an urgent message to the author herself to say OMG WTF), and cried again. Even in the Florida heat, I had goosebumps for a majority of this book. The ending had me WISHING book two was published. I would have started it immediately and then proceeded to read all night. Beautiful. Wonderful. Magical. Perfect.

Thank you to Nicolette for allowing me to read this ARC and be a part of your ARC team!

Now y'all know we stan a badass FMC around here; but a badass FMC with a heart? More, please. Nix if the FMC in this novel, a trained assassin, who also happens to be the princess and heir of the kingdom of Rojas, whose mission goes awry and she ends up captured by a rival kingdom. Nix spends six months in captivity before a merry band of rescuers comes to save her from bondage. This is where we meet our MMC, Malakai, and his group of mercenaries (but make it family), Dom, Elias, Lian, and Kerun. After Nix is rescued, the group spends the next few months traveling to deliver Nix to the group that has paid Malakai and company to them instead of returning her to her kingdom.

This is a slow-burn romantasy (and I do mean slowwww, but wow, is it worth it), with all the yearning, stolen looks, please-just-kiss-already angst that makes you jump up and down and kick your feet when it all comes to fruition. I loved that this was truly a slow burn--the romance slowly evolves over the course of months, not days or weeks, with the FMC and MMC really getting to know each other before they fall for each other. They start revealing their vulnerabilities, their worries, their fears, along with sharing memories of the best parts of their childhoods, the things that built who they are at that moment.

Along the way, Nix also gets to know all the other members of Malakai's group and I loved that each member of the group helped Nix grow and develop in one way or another, letting her see that she was more than a weapon, more than a hired blade, and more than just a tool for her mother to use and discard when she was no longer useful. Also, the way that the group slowly begins to trust and embrace Nix as one of their own is so heartwarming and really goes to show how much people can flourish when they have a community supporting them. And Xixi? Every girl needs her very own form of an alebrije to be her ride or die.

This novel ends on a cliffhanger, so steel your little heart if you hate to see one coming (hi, it's me), but this book was fantastic--the magic system is interesting and I can't wait to learn more about the different goddesses, the different kingdoms and their powers, and how everything comes together. Thank you, Nicolette, for a book that's giving me a big book hangover right now! Five star read for me :)

This dark romantasy awakened, ignited, something in me that I’d been longing to find in a book.

The concept explored in this story was unlike anything I’ve come across before. This world—or rather, this realm—was a fascinating blend of ancient magic, rich lore, and mythical creatures, intertwined with modern technology, vehicles, surveillance cameras, and even mind chips. It was an unusual combination, one that took me a moment to adjust to, but ultimately, it was brilliantly executed and surprisingly satisfying.

Our FMC in this story is a fierce assassin—powerful, independent, fiery, and ruthless. Also backed by her hardened exterior, she’s lost, alone, and quietly broken. The MMC is equally powerful—a mercenary who fights fiercely for what he loves, throwing his whole heart into everything he does. Together, their dynamic is explosive, raw, and deeply compelling. They are both chasing something, internally, both with past traumas and gosh dang their connection was fire.

I’ll always give praise to a story that captivates me with sensational side characters, and this one delivered in every way. The group we follow alongside the MMC—his mercenary team—is made up of beautifully broken, deeply flawed individuals who somehow form the most unforgettable found family. They’re hilarious, sharp-witted, and each one brings a unique and essential dynamic to the story. I could absolutely not get over their presence and added heart, humor, and depth, making the world feel all the more real for me.

There’s a lot of fantasy-specific verbiage in this book, and I’m sure I mispronounced half of it in my head—but that didn’t take away from how fantastic the writing style was. The beginning pulled me in instantly with its strength and intrigue. While the middle felt a bit slow at times, by the end, I understood exactly why it had to unfold that way. The plot twists were jaw-dropping, the character development was phenomenal, and the found family element? One of the best I’ve ever read.

The ending completely blew me away—I couldn’t believe it. It’s a long story, and I was definitely kicking and screaming at how we were left. But all I know now is, I can’t wait to see what comes next.

If you love high romantasy, slow burn, delicious tension, and an action-packed ride with heart—this story needs to be on your shelf.

I received an advanced reader copy for a honest review.

We Were Meant to Burn had a lot of potential. The concept was strong. I liked the incorporation of Hispanic heritage and the magical elements were interesting. There were moments where the worldbuilding made me want to keep going, and the idea of a fierce main character with a complicated past really had promise.

But honestly, the main character’s internal thoughts were just too repetitive. Nix constantly self-criticized, to the point where it got frustrating. She tried so hard to seem strong and hide her vulnerability, but would turn around and do something emotionally reactive or insecure then beat herself up for it all over again. It felt like I was stuck in her head, hearing the same thoughts on a loop. She talks about her mother so much that it started to feel emotionally manipulative rather than meaningful.

Nix is supposed to be this hardened, feared assassin raised under brutal conditions… but her actions don’t always match that reputation. The emotional swings, the moments where she gets “stilled” over basic conversations, and her constant self-doubt start to clash with the image the book tries to sell. She wants to seem untouchable, but she reacts like someone who’s constantly caught off guard by her own feelings—and that becomes exhausting. It weakens the believability of her character. You can be emotionally complex without being emotionally inconsistent.

Some scenes were cringy. The guys are super cringy cocky do to much . Ughhhhh. Moments that were supposed to be intense or emotional ended up feeling awkward. The slow burn romance didn’t land for me. The love interest wasn’t compelling, and their chemistry felt forced. I found myself wanting more from their interactions or at least more believable tension.

The book relied more on dialogue internal and external than rich description to me. Like I can’t explain it

All that said, I can see how others might enjoy it especially readers who prefer character-driven stories with a lot of internal struggle and less focus on scenery or poetic writing. It’s just not for me. Still, I think with some tightening and more emotional variation, this author could really shine.

Well, color me intrigued and just a smidge singed — We Were Meant to Burn delivers heat, danger, and enough slow-burn tension to toast a marshmallow from twenty paces.
We’ve got:

🔥 Mercenary vs. Assassin showdowns
🔥 Slow burn romance that’s basically a bonfire in disguise (IYKYK)
🔥 Forbidden love
🔥 Found family
🔥 Forced proximity that’ll make you fan yourself and roll your eyes in equal measure

The story pulled me in quick, but here’s the hitch in my giddy-up — the world building was almost there. We’ve got swords, bows, and daggers sharing page space with helicopters and motorcycles, plus a hearty sprinkling of magic. And while that mashup can work, here it felt a little uneven. Like… am I supposed to be picturing medieval mercenaries or modern-day rebels? My dragon brain wanted a tad more explanation so I wasn’t mentally swapping between Game of Thrones and Fast & Furious.

Now… about Nix.
Girl.
Babe.
My dear fictional troublemaker — you’ve got badass potential oozing out of you, but that repetitive self-hate loop? Tiring. And don’t even get me started on the “I’m doing this for your own good” moment at the end. Deep, aggravated sigh. Just talk to Malakai! Sheesh. I’m rooting for you, but please, book two needs to let you shine without tripping over your own stubbornness every other scene.

That said, the incorporation of Hispanic heritage was beautifully woven into the magical elements, the different kingdoms were intriguing, and the magical creatures? Chef’s kiss. I only wish there had been more of them. Because, yes, I am that greedy.

And of course… there’s a cliffhanger. I get it. Keeps the pages turning. But still — my poor, singed reader heart would like a moment’s peace now and then.

Will I read the next one? Oh, absolutely. I need to see if Nix finally gets her act together.

Final Verdict:
If you like danger, longing looks, magic, and yelling at fictional characters to get their emotional lives together — toss this one on your TBR. Just be prepared for a cliffhanger and to occasionally mutter, “Girl, you’re a badass — ACT LIKE IT.”

“We Were Meant to Burn” by Nicolette Elzie is a slow-burning, immersive Romantasy novel. It is the first book in the “Ashes and Ruin Saga.” “We Were Meant to Burn” ends in a cliffhanger that will leave you burning for more.

With a spice level of 🌶️🌶️, you will scream “just kiss already” multiple times reading this book. It is a VERY slow burn. It’s borderline criminal, but you take what Elzie gives and accept it. By the time everything comes to a head and you see the open door scene that warrants its score, all you can say is “thank you”. You only get one, but it’s worth it, bearing a promise of more to come.

Immortals and mortals alike share Corinea, and readers travel through opulent kingdoms, forests full of magical creatures and macaws, waterfalls you can hear as you read, and lush lands of magic and secrets. Elzie chooses to emphasize immersive world-building over staunch action, forcing readers into slow-burning exposure to all that comprises “We Were Meant to Burn”: world-building, romance, lore, and revelations.

Elzie’s story incorporates Latin culture and the Spanish language to create a lore-rich world for our characters. Corinea's culture and lore are derived from a rich pantheon of goddesses, known as Las Madres, who gave the gift of magic to the land. Alebrijes live and exist among the living in Corinea, causing mischief as they bond with mortals and immortals alike. The types of magic and their groupings are based in the Spanish language as well, with healers known as “Curadors” and fire wielders known as “fuegadors.”

Beyond the spice, world-building, and cultural richness, we see a person become more than she is told or believes she is to be. Rivaling Nesta’s journey of pain, healing, acceptance, and growth in ACOSF, Nix is a “broken blade” until she isn’t. Her growth is an inspiration to those beginning the path in front of them or a mirror image to those who have already walked it, accepting their “more”.

Journey with Nix, her Alebrije Xixi, Malakai, and the crew through an immersive world, finding a kindling love, redemption, and her future along the way.

Blurb:
Nix Zaldanna was trained to be a weapon. As the infamous Nightshade of Rojas, she was molded by fire, forged in blood, and never meant to feel—let alone love. But when she’s abandoned in a dungeon by the empire she served without question, her world begins to fracture. Her unlikely savior is Malakai, a fae warrior with secrets stitched into every scar and a proposition that ties her to a cause far greater than the crown.

With enemies on every side and trust in short supply, Nix must confront the lies she was raised to believe, the empire that betrayed her, and the growing bond with the one man she was never supposed to want.

Review:
I devoured We Were Meant to Burn and loved every fierce, slow-burning, morally gray second of it. Nicolette Elzie has built a brutal and mesmerizing world full of betrayal, vengeance, and reluctant longing—and I never wanted to leave it.

Nix Zaldanna is the kind of heroine who lingers in your mind long after the last page. Cold, lethal, and heartbroken in ways she doesn’t fully understand, her journey from blindly loyal assassin to someone questioning the very foundation of her identity is masterfully written. And then there’s Malakai—brooding, unreadable, infuriating, and somehow exactly what Nix needs. Their tension crackles on every page, walking that razor-sharp line between enemies and something deeper, something dangerous.

The plot twists are smart, the pacing tight, and the emotional stakes cut deep. But it’s the chemistry between Nix and Malakai that truly ignites this story. It’s not just romance—it’s survival, reckoning, and choosing vulnerability in a world that punishes it.

Favorite quote:
“You don’t have to trust me, Nightshade. Just don’t stop looking at me like that—like you’re trying to decide whether to kill me or kiss me.”

If you loved The Bridge Kingdom or The Shadows Between Us, prepare to be obsessed. We Were Meant to Burn doesn’t just live up to the hype—it scorches it to the ground. This is enemies-to-lovers perfection with just the right balance of angst, fire, and fantasy. I can’t wait to see where Elzie takes us next.

The very first thing I have to say about this book, is I truly haven’t felt anything like this with a book, since reading the ACOTAR series and Fourth Wing. The world building in this story was absolutely incredible. I could “see” everything, feel everything; the pain, the emotional turmoil, the inner battles, the angst, the tension, fear, heartbreak, falling in love, all of it! We Were Meant to Burn was so magical and enthralling. It’s starts off with action immediately and doesn’t let up throughout the entire book. Nix is an assassin, The Nightshade of Rojas, and she definitely lives up to her name. She’s guarded, tough, doesn’t trust anyone, including herself, and she’s deadly. She’s been trained her entire life to kill and fight battles, and she’s successful, until she’s ultimately captured and imprisoned, waiting for the Empress that trained her to rescue her, but, instead, she’s left there, with no hope of rescue. Until a mercenary, Malakai, a fae warrior, breaks her out of her prison, with his crew of misfits and mercenaries, and this is where the story really begins. Nix and Malakai feel an immediate push/pull to one another, and the will they or won’t they was so heartbreaking, sweet, funny at times, and emotional. I’m trying to keep as much detail out as possible, because I absolutely hate spoilers. There are so many difficult moments, there are hilarious moments, tense, horrifying, romantic, and even betrayal. The creatures in this book range from absolutely adorable, to nightmarish. I cannot recommend this book enough. I’m so sad I’m finished, I’m so sad I’ll never get to read this again for the first time, but I’m also super excited to read it again, and pick up on those beautiful tidbits you never notice the first time and discover through each re-read of a story you absolutely love. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have read this book. It is definitely one of my favorite books I’ve ever read.

Nix Zaldanna is the deadliest princess you’ll ever meet - too bad most people don’t stay alive long enough to tell the story. But Nix is the one needing saving this time, and the truths she discovers along the way changes her entire future.

This book had a lot going on - badass FMC, unpredictable magic, family secrets, enemies to lovers slow burn… but sometimes the magic felt too “convenient” and the plot was a bit predictable. That’s not to say this wasn’t a good book - I entirely ate it up and am really looking forward to book 2 in the series!

Elzie’s writing was incredible descriptive - she had such a great way of building the world and the characters, but sometimes the description got a bit long and I just wanted more action. There were over 200 pages where not much happened, but it finally built into something big and the end made it all worth it!

The soundtrack to this book for me was “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star. Both the song and book talk about a love that slowly builds and ultimately consumes your every thought. The song itself is slow and dreamy, which matches both the book’s pacing and Nix’s slow budding feelings for (I won’t spoil it ;)). “I look to you and see the truth / You live your life, you go in shadows” could describe any of the truths Nix learns from her companions or just how she lives her life - slipping from one place to the next with no connections. “Fade into you / strange you never knew / Fade into you” could again be a double meaning of the love Nix and her companion find or of the truths she didn’t know was hiding under the surface.

My heart was pounding, racing, hurting, bursting. This story seeped into my soul, into my bones, and found a nice little spot to stay.
I loved it.

Nix has spent her life being honed into a blade. She is the Nightshade of Rojas—and now, she’s fallen. Captured by her enemies, she waits for rescue. But the last thing she expects is Malakai: all otherworldly beauty, brutal skill, and violet eyes full of secrets.

He and his crew have been hired to deliver her to the Hada. Knowing the danger she poses, they’re determined to keep this weapon out of play. But as they journey together, truths begin to unravel, and Nix’s world starts to shift.

What if everything she’s believed, everything she’s fought and bled for… was a lie? What if she’s not who she thought she was? And most terrifying of all… what if she finally has the power to choose a different path?

I was completely entranced by the world, the creatures (who doesn’t want an alebrije?!), the lore, and the magic structure mixed with tech, so cool. I honestly couldn’t put it down. The pacing was perfect, the action kept coming, and the emotional depth was breathtaking. The trust, the found family, the tenderness in the chaos… it was all handled so delicately.

I loved the whole crew, but Nix completely stole the show for me. She’s such a layered, powerful character. raised to be a weapon and left to survive alone, every crack in her armor felt deeply earned. Watching her break, and knowing she has the chance to be forged even stronger was rich and intense. Seeing her learn to care, and to be cared for? Absolutely devastating and beautiful. She’s only just beginning to find herself, and I truly can’t wait to see her be reborn.

Honestly, it was just so. Freaking. Good.

Thank you to Nicolette Elzie for this gifted e-copy.

vauge spoilers ish

I absolutely loved this book. From the very first chapter, it hooked me and never let go. Every character is so well written, each with their own voice, their own arc, and their own emotional weight. Even the true villains? Utterly despicable in the best way. She wrote them so well, I hated them. Like, deliciously evil levels of hate.

The character growth and relationship development throughout the story was beautifully done. I really enjoyed how natural it all felt, nothing forced, just slow, steady growth that pulled me in deeper with every chapter. The way she layered in emotional depth, trauma, healing, and found family? Chef's kiss. I also loved how easy this book was to follow. The pacing, the world building, the dialogue, it all flowed so seamlessly. The vivid descriptions made each scene come alive (those jungle monsters were terrifyingly awesome), and the magic system was just so cool.

I have to shout out the slow burn romance: SO. GOOD. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and when it finally happened, worth it.

This book made me laugh, it made me teary, eyed, and it made me feel every step of the way. The emotional weight hit hard, and Each chapter offered something: heart, heat, humor, and high stakes.

And can we talk about Malakai?! Mr. Violet Eyes himself. I was obsessed from the moment he showed up, broody, powerful, mysterious, and emotionally layered. The tension between him and Nix had me clinging to every word. Their dynamic was messy in the best way, and the moments of vulnerability between them gave me chills. I loved the emotional healing arc they’re both tiptoeing through, especially when it’s awkward, raw, and unexpectedly soft.
