The author was a reporter whose family immigrated to Candada from Hong Kong when she was in high school. At that time her brother already showed signs of schizophrenia. Due to the high expectations of Asian families on the first born son and the unfamiliar environment and language barrier. Her brother was kept hidden away inside the house by her Dad who was the decision maker of the family at that time.
