Red flags can look like roses when you’re blinded by love.
Thirty-something Emily Hathaway is trying to advance in her career while surrounded by good friends and a solid relationship with her mom. The missing piece? A romantic partner.
After a string of disaster dates with the messy eater, Mr. Meet My Family on the First Date, and the “nice guy” her aunt pushes on her, she’s about to let it go.
Then David shows up, a charming trilingual attorney and French expat. He woos her with a literary treasure hunt, intimate nights at his high-rise condo, and exhilarating motorcycle rides through Chicago. He gives Emily all the right feelings, except for the doubt he’s hiding something.
Is she sabotaging her chances, or trusting her instincts at last? Emily must decide if she’s willing to scratch that beautiful surface. Will she discover whether this relationship is solid gold or thinly plated lead?

3⭐️ {Book | Bookclub}
This was our May 2026 Bookclub read. Book#49.

Loved how atmospheric the Windy City was on the pages. I felt like I was back on the streets of Chicago.

For me, this book was harder to relate to because I haven’t been in the dating scene in quite awhile and just in a different phase of life in my 40s—but that said I thought the author did a fantastic job on writing a toxic MMC we’d loathe. And that loathing was 10/10!

I definitely felt the FMC Emily’s frustration in life though. We all can feel like our relationships, goals, career, physical health, etc is not where we want it to be. It’s hard and often we don’t give ourselves the grace we deserve to realize it’s just chapters, the book isn’t fully written yet. That hit home in this story. I liked the evolution of self growth as the story unfolds.

There was definitely times though I had to put the book down because I was so frustrated with what was happening but again kudos to the author for how well those scenes were written.
