Gathered from the North: An Instant Family Christian Historical Romance

Rate this book
He survived the war, but he didn’t come home whole. Hope of a ready-made family promises healing—until he learns the truth about his love’s adopted baby.

Beth Calloway has always longed for a family, but after a childhood marked by loss, she’s learned to live quietly—typing reports at the Boise Foundling Home and keeping her heart carefully tucked away. Until one snowy night, a baby is left on her doorstep. With no room at the orphanage and no one else to help, she takes the risk…never expecting the handsome wounded soldier next door to take notice.

Recently discharged from the army, Private Timothy McPhearson is a man on a mission. Haunted by his best friend’s death during WWII, he’s determined to uncover the truth—and escape the guilt that won’t let him go. Falling for his grandmother’s quiet tenant and the baby she’s sheltering isn’t part of the plan…but Beth and little Elly Rose begin to chip away at the walls he’s built.

Just as the three begin to imagine life as a family, a shattering revelation threatens to tear them apart. When the truth about baby Elly Rose comes to light—and danger closes in—Beth must fight to protect the child she’s come to love…even if it means letting go of the man who’s claimed her heart.

A heart-tugging postwar romance of second chances, found family, and love worth risking everything for.

Gathered from the North felt like stepping forward without knowing whether the ground would hold. Choosing obedience before clarity and trusting that God was already holding what I could not yet see. This story understands the sacred tension of faith lived in real time: seeking His guidance, listening for His voice, and taking the next step knowing He is already there, carried not by answers but by grace. Every page whispered the same steady truth to my heart: God is sovereign even here, especially here, and His goodness is never dependent on our understanding.

So many times, God’s work begins long before we recognize it, His hand moving quietly through loss, waiting, and unanswered questions. Reading Beth Calloway’s story, I recognized her posture of trust. Her longing for family. Her willingness to say yes when embracing fear and saying no would have been easier. Her obedience in the small, unseen moments felt deeply familiar. When the words appeared on the page, “God had chosen her porch for Elly Rose to be left on,” my heart paused. That sentence alone reframed everything. Nothing here is accidental. Not timing. Not sorrow. Not love. Not the plans He has for us.

Timothy McPhearson’s journey carries the heavy silence of war and the ache of unresolved grief. His struggle is not about restoring strength but surrendering control. His whispered prayer, “God? Would You fill my soul?” felt like a holy breaking point. It is the kind of prayer offered when there are no polished words left, only need. His path is one of reckoning and healing, shaped by memorized Scripture and a faith embraced and maturing, as the Lord gently draws him out of isolation, closer to Him, and into belonging.

Faith breathes naturally through this story. Spoken aloud, prayed in uncertainty, and lived out in daily choices. Simple blessings carry eternal weight: “May God’s grace walk with you.” A prayer offered without flourish becomes a lifeline: “Yes, Lord, please walk with us. Through this day and every day.” Scripture rises as an anchor, especially in the beautiful passage that echoes through the pages: “Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness… For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.”
This book understands longing. It honors hunger of the soul. And it testifies, again and again, to the faithfulness of the one true, Almighty God who fills both.

Elly Rose embodies the heart of the Gospel within this story: rescued, cherished, placed intentionally into loving arms. The blessing spoken over her life felt like a benediction over the entire narrative: “May God bless you, dear child… the Lord has rescued you and placed you in loving arms.” It is impossible to read those words and not think of our own rescue and adoption into God’s family for eternity.

The symbolism of the bitterbrush is one of the most tender expressions of faith I have encountered in fiction. A dormant branch. A promise not yet seen. Beauty that waits on God’s timing. It stands as a quiet testimony that God’s faithfulness does not bloom on demand, but it always blooms. Always.

This story does not rush healing, does not soften truth, and does not shy away from naming God’s sovereignty in every place. Characters who trust honestly. Scripture, prayer, and hope woven into an amazing narrative that is reverent and deeply human. Through every chapter, the book affirms that God is never improvising. He is intentionally gathering His children long before we understand what He is building.

Gathered from the North is a treasure. Perfect for readers who long for clearly Christian historical romance rooted in Scripture, stories of found family and second chances, postwar healing shaped by surrender, and novels that reflect the quiet courage of trusting God’s faithfulness while His plan is still unfolding in real time.

Theme Scripture Isaiah 43:5-6 “Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you. I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring My sons from afar and My daughters from the end of the earth.”

This memorable novel leaves the reader resting in the faithfulness of our sovereign God who gathers His children from the north, guiding every step with purpose and grace.

“Elly reminds me that there is hope for the hopeless, that there’s life and still something to live for. Like God is saying through her, ‘I care.’”

This third book of the Blooms of the Bitterbrush series, Gathered from the North, certainly found a place in my heart. Barbara A. Curtis pens a touching and convicting historical romance that starts in a foundling home in Boise, ID.

Beth, a young lady who longs for children and family, but feels incompetent in childcare, finds herself an adoptive, single mother. And one whose choice for motherhood ends her romantic liaison as well as her job. She is blessed to have a wonderful landlady, Mrs. MacPhearson.

Mrs. MacPhearson, in turn, has a grandson, Timothy, who is returning from the German front near the war’s end. Discharged with a mark against his name as a victim of “combat fatigue,” Timothy can’t find a job. Bitter, searching for the truth that will set him free, he struggles as he remembers the words of his soldier buddy and best friend, Stanley. “Remember those words, Timothy… Praise the Lord for His goodness. Hold on to that.”

I loved the poignant story of children needing a family, adult children needing acceptance and love, and the wonderful use of twists to craft an amazing story. Both Grandma MacPhearson’s house and the ranch are painted as being filled with a love that envelops and invites one in. I also loved the reminders to look for reasons to praise God, even in the dark times. As Timothy and Beth are reminded multiple times of blessings that should help them trust God through their next trial, I realized I have the same problem. I had to admit as I read of the characters’ trust struggles, how little I trust the Lord, even after seeing examples of His caring in the past.

While the young people are the stars of the book, it is the older generation that provides the wisdom, love, guidance, and even help that enable both Beth and Timothy to become all God wants them to be. Just as Beth tells Timothy, “ Every man’s efforts count.” So, in life, every one has a part to play to help others.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also purchased my own ebook. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

The Bitterbrush blooms reminded them of God’s goodness and faithfulness to all generations.

Beth left home for a job in Boise thinking she was unworthy to be a mother after the accident with her little sister. However, she was enjoying her job as typist at the Boise Foundling Home, until someone changed her whole life. How could God take one small baby and make everything beautiful?

Timothy has returned from the war with scars inside and out. Will he realize that his prejudice is wrong before it is too late? This third book in the Blooms of the Bitterbrush was received through Wild Heart Books and BookFunnel . These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.

I really enjoyed this World War II homefront story which progressed to the next generation of Morgan women named Elizabeth, this one focusing on Beth Calloway, granddaughter of Eliza Morgan from Book One. Tensions were high during World War II, even at home where rationing continued and there was continued fear and distrust of those of German descent. Beth’s compassion shone through as she adopted a baby abandoned on her doorstep, the same address where her mother and father wound up meeting years earlier when it was a boardinghouse owned by a Mrs. McPhearson. Beth’s warm-hearted personality drew the attention of Mrs. McPhearson’s grandson Timothy, who had recently been discharged from the army. I loved this connection between the two stories. Timothy had some personal baggage to deal with that haunted his dreams and made him restless to find out the truth of his nightmares while Beth struggled with self-esteem after running away from an incident at her family home. Throw in a local aggressor who added more angst to Beth’s life and this was a story filled with tension, prejudice, and drama, yet also much perseverance, forgiveness, and love. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the last book in the series!

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher. A positive review was not required and these are my own and honest opinions.

This is the first book I've read by this author. I am amazed at her ability to bring 1945 to the written page in an easy-to-read style that made me feel like I was there. Her characters also had great depth, showed a lot of emotion, and worked through their struggles with faith in God.

Beth Calloway had a big heart and lots of love to give. Her faith was strong despite the hardship she endured. The danger she faced seemed real, and it kept me turning the pages, wondering how each predicament would turn out.

I enjoyed this book a lot and would highly recommend it to readers who want to be totally immersed in the story. In some places, you need to get out the tissues; in others, you will feel joy. The era's details were well represented—a very uplifting and inspirational ending.

I was given a complimentary copy from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.

Timothy’s and Beth’s journeys are definitely emotional ones. Beth has left home under wrong assumptions to forge a life of her own. She doubts herself and feels unworthy of ever having her own family. Timothy carries wounds from the war, both in his heart and on his body. His mind and heart is filled with revenge and prejudice against those he feels are his enemies.

Their paths cross and God begins a work that will only be completed in His time. They face dangers, fears, and doubts to discover the truths that will set them free. There is suspense and mystery, love and healing within these pages.

I enjoyed the novel. Well-balanced and filled with Biblical references and truths that can impact our lives if we let them. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

Near the end of WWII, while life is still in war mode and difficult for all Beth Calloway finds a baby girl left near her home, asking her to care for her. Gathered from the North is her story along with the baby and a nearby returning from war soldier. By Barbara A. Curtis this story has emotional tension, prejudice of that time, and callousness but also God’s grace, mercy, love and most important forgiveness. A well-written story that had me back in the time of my parents, understanding the hardships endured and the decisions that had to be made. Gathered from the North is a wonderful addition to this series.

Gathered from the North is such an engaging story. I love it when a book makes me sigh as I read the last page. I was pulled through all the feels and rooted for Beth and Timothy to find the healing they both needed.

This story offers a beautiful blend of history, mystery, and romance, all tied nicely together with God’s guidance, mercy, and grace. I never really thought about what happened to children during WWII, but this story opened my eyes.

This transformation story is so sweet, as is book 1 and 2. Even if you haven’t read the previous books, this one stands well on its own. Beth is such a standout, memorable character – and maybe my favorite of the series.

First Line: All Beth Calloway had to do was smile.

As we continue with the Blooms of the Bitterbrush series we are swept away to 1945 Boise Idaho and the story of the granddaughter of the characters in book one and daughter of the characters in book two. Beth Calloway is a kindhearted, loving, selfless person who feels she has failed her family because of an accident. Timothy is a soldier who is dealing with the trauma of knowing his friend has been murdered by the WWII enemy. Both are assuming things that may not be facts as they are drawn together and journey towards their stronger faith and find forgiveness and hope for a brighter future. I love the originality of this story and how faith and scripture are a strong element. I definitely recommend reading this series as you will not be disappointed to meet this family and how the Bitterbrush blossom offers a promise of hope, of God’s provision. Well written and great characters that feel like family.I suggest adding this to your must read pile.

I hope you are ready with tissues when you read this emotional story. I felt the most sweet and selfish love from our main character Beth. Her courage, strength and faith in God helps her begin a new chapter in her life. Working at a foundling home Beth sees many children come through looking for families. Each day she can hear the wails from innocent babies and see the sad eyes of small children waiting for a family. It must have been so hard during this time period to witness the dire need to have people step up and take in a child. Oh how she longs for a family of her own, but her insecurity and pain from her past leaves her with little hope.

I cried the moment Beth opens her door one winter evening to discover a baby in a basket. Who left this innocent child on her doorstep? I admired Beth for following her heart to care for little Elly Rose. Her life drastically changed the moment she decides to keep her. During this time period people relied on ration stamps to buy food. Beth finds herself wondering if she made the right decision when she glances at Elly Rose snuggled up and safe.

Timothy returns from war with a medical discharge. It is not how he wanted to end his stint in service but now he finds himself back at his grandmother’s house. There is one mission he is determined to accomplish which involves the death of his best friend who he served beside. I like how Timothy is kind, honorable and has a heart to help others. His first encounter with Beth paved the way for a relationship that will show him that God has a plan for him.

With a little mystery, secrets and revenge this story will keep readers entertained till the last word is written. I love how the author illustrates God’s unconditional love and how faith can see us through difficult times. The historical facts brings this story to life with realism. Don’t miss a chance to go back in time and witness struggles and life changing events in this deeply moving story.

“Everyone needs to be loved.”

Blooms of the Bitterbrush continues with Elizabeth (Beth) Calloway during 1945 as she is working in Boise after leaving the ranch. She was quiet and enjoyed her job but knew children would not be in life even though she saw babies daily at the Foundling Home. An unexpected basket changed her world one winter evening, along with other interesting events happening soon afterwards. Mrs. McPhearson grandson Timothy had returned from the service with outward and inner struggles. Beth was polite to welcome him and kind with the history of her parents with Mrs. McPhearson.

The interaction between Beth, Timothy and little Elly along with mysterious events happening kept the story flowing easily. Curtis created a well researched historical fiction with information on POW’s serving around the USA along with issues of prejudice toward Germans, faith, forgiveness, and discovering things weren’t always what one might believe.

I received an early copy of this book from the publisher Wild Heart Books for a book tour. I have shared my own thoughts. I look forward to the conclusion in this series as the bitterbrush meant God’s faithfulness to all generations as Curtis has shown beautifully for each generation.

Gathered from the North is a Christian Historical Fiction Story that is written by Barbara A. Curtis. This is the first book that I have read by this author, and it will not be my last. One of the things that I loved about this author is that she was able to transport readers back to 1945. I loved all the scene descriptions. I felt that I was right there watching everything unfold.

Beth Calloway works hard at typing reports at the Boise Foundling Home. One day a baby is left on the doorstep, and there is no more room at the orphanage. So, Beth who has always wanted a child of her own takes the child in. What she does not count on is her neighbor, Timothy McPhearson who has recently returned from war takes notice.

Timothy has felt guilt over his friends death, and he just wants to uncover the truth. However when Beth has the baby he is drawn to her - and just as soon s they start to envision a future together, danger looms and the truth of the baby comes up.

While this is part of a series, it's not hard to follow along. It's well written, and engaging. I hope to read more from this author.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

Gathered From the North is a wonderful historical fiction novel that deals with childhood hurt, an abandoned child, and post-war issues. One man comes home from war to deal with issues; he definitely came home changed. But he also begins to fall for the woman living in his grandma’s rental. For her and the abandoned baby she adopted.

But things aren’t always as they seem. When things get dicey, will they stick together? Or will they each go their own way to forget about what they might have had?

This is book three in a series. This series does follow one family. With that said, I would advise reading the entire series as written in order rather than just picking up this one book. However, if you must just read one book, this could probably be read as a standalone; if it had to, I guess.

I encourage you to step back to 1945, just after the end of World War II and enjoy this wonderful novel.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

A tender story about letting God into our lives to show us the way to go when no path is clear. It also shows how good people can be trusted to help us achieve our goals and help us along the way if we have faith that God put them in our paths to assist us, especially when things seemed bleak.
Beth feels she let her family down and escapes to Boise to quietly work at a foundling home where she work each day and not bother anyone. However, when a baby is left on her doorstep in the middle of winter, it changes her whole life and she must decide what she will do going forward.
Timothy is discharged from the Army with an injury during WWII and he doesn't feel worthy to return home but has to. Only his grandmother is waiting for him so he goes to live with her. He still feels so much rage and injustice inside and holds it close so no one knows. He meets his next-door neighbor, Beth and the baby she acquired. Big changes happen to him as he lets God into his life. However, danger is following Beth and both Timothy & Beth need to rely on God and good people to see them through. I loved this story so much! I couldn't read it fast enough and didn't want it to end!

Gathered from the North is the third book in the Blooms of the Bitterbush series written by Barbara A. Curtis. This is a well written story that takes place after the previous book in the series, so it is best to read them in order. This Christian historical romance story is enjoyable and easy to read. The story takes place during WWII and gives a look into emotions soldiers may have had and situations that happened at that time.

This story is so good. I like how it showed what happened to children during the war. The author does a great job giving a look into the lives of the families of soldiers who lost their lives who had no one to help them. I appreciate how the author shows the emotions Timothy has when faced with Germans after his war injury and how he works through them. I just loved Beth's character. She is so strong and does what she needs to care for the young child left on her steps. I especially enjoyed the parts with the characters from the previous story and enjoyed the meaning behind the Bitterbush. This is a very inspirational story.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

"Gathered from the North" By Barbara A. Curtis is a Christian Historical Romance. This story resonates with initial feelings of loss and protecting her heart for Beth Calloway. She works at the Boise Foundling Home, primarily typing reports. But when someone leaves a baby on her doorstop, and no one else is available to care for the child, she steps up.

Private Timothy McPhearson, a man on a mission, finds himself haunted by his best friend’s death during WWII. He sets out with determination to uncover the truth—and escape the guilt that keeps him in its grip.

The author creates a story in which the three begin to act as if they have a future, but secrets surface and threaten that idea. I love getting to know the characters. I felt their emotions, and the story moved at a good pace.

So if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances, check out "Gathered from the North" by Barbara A. Curtis.

This is a post WW2 story of learning to forgive oneself, letting go of prejudices, and graciously taking the hand of a second chance.

Our characters, Beth and Timothy have some past baggage. Beth and the accident with her sister which she assumed has cost her her family. Timothy has his scars, both outside and inside from the war. Both are just going through the everyday motions of living. Till a sweet baby is left on Beth's doorstep and her heart begins the healing it needs.

This is their journey of the ups and downs of learning to trust and falling in love. All the while fighting self-doubt, personal prejudice, and an outside antagonist that is not happy they did not get their way. This was a great story of new beginnings and a family worth fighting for.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

Gathered from the North is a heartfelt end-of-WWII story filled with gentle faith and characters who are impossible not to love. This book centers around the granddaughter of the heroine in book one, which I haven't read yet, so they can be read out of order. Looking forward to seeing the connection there! Curtis weaves historical intrigue with the sweetness of the found family trope.

I especially loved Beth Calloway's quiet spirit and strength. Timothy struggles with grief and prejudice as he returns from the home front, and the faith struggles are so raw yet hopeful! Wonderful Christian fiction that shares the light of Jesus through themes of healing, second chances, and sacrificial love.

From beginning the book (I listened to the audio) I kind of knew how the story would play out but I was always glad to 'get back to the book'. Generally, the characters were quite likable, most of the story believable - other than the baby's mother. She and the circumstances of her 'giving' the baby and child to the main character were somewhat over the top as to being realistic. It did help tie the 2 main characters together.
All in all, this was a lighthearted story, and I found it to be a welcomed break from some heavier things I had recently read or another recent read that was a bit to sexually trashy which I needed to read for a book club.
I usually would save 4 stars for a more compelling book, but it was 4 stars for this point in one of my reading cycles.

I really enjoyed the book "Gathered from the North" by Barbara A Curtis. I was appalled at first when the baby was left on the doorstep at Beth's but the more that I read I understood that it was for the best. If a reader likes an inspiring book that shares a message, then they need to do themselves with favor and make read this book. This book deals with prejudice and forgiveness. This book is a clean read!

I have enjoyed the books I have read by this author. I like her characters and her settings. I liked how in this story both of her main characters struggled with forgiveness, whether it was others or themselves. I liked how once they forgave the were less burdened and were able to move forward in life. I also liked how they were able to open their hearts to love. I also like that these books follow the next generation in each book.

I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors.  A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

Gathered from the North is book 3 of the Blooms of the Bitterbrush series. It is a delightful read, full of faith and learning to trust God in all circumstances.

I enjoyed watching Beth gain confidence in herself, and the sweet relationship between her and Timothy grow. Their tender care for precious Elly Rose is heart warming.

If you enjoy sweet historical fiction, with a touch of romance and a dose of faith, you'll want to add this one to your TBR list.
