Melbourne, Australia. Netta Phillips is a teacher, her fortieth birthday is approaching quickly, she desperately wants to have a baby and her current relationship is flat, and nothing seems to be going right.
London, England. Morrison 'Mo' Maplestone record company is putting pressure on him to write a new album, he can't stick his head out of a door without the paparazzi taking taking a photo, his life is splashed all over the tabloids and the last thing he needs is anymore bad publicity.
Netta finds his secret childhood diary under some floorboards, she’s reaches out to his manager, and Mo wants it back and offers to pay her to deliver it safely to London. This would solve Netta’s financial woes, with her biological clock’s alarm going off, she could afford assisted IVF and hopefully fulfill her dream of being a mother.
Netta’s bestie Freya convinces her to go and she arrives in the UK just before Christmas, she’s forgotten how much she loves the atmosphere, lights, markets and strolling the streets. Mo turns out to be very different to what she was expecting, he has to perform at Christmas Gala and he needs a date, a respectable plus one and Netta fits the brief.

Who doesn’t like a story about a bad boy tattooed rock star, who loves his younger brother and helping disadvantage kids and he meets a lovely teacher who’s had a bad experience in the UK decades ago and kissed her fair share of toads, and gets to be Cinderella for a magical night.
Ms Crawford won the Romance Writers of Australia’s Opal Award in 2024, and I can understand why, I adored this book, it ticked all my boxes, full of great characters, I wanted to be friends with Netta, Freya, Rhona and Audrey, sing Christmas carols, ride in a limo and walk the red carpet. In my mind I'm thinking Mo's an Aussie version of Robbie Williams and he can entertain me anytime!!
Hilarious and witty, emotional and moving, have box of tissues ready and you will need them, I highly recommend and five stars from me.

I am not a romance fan usually but I was given this book and it is an Aussie author so I gave it a try. I am glad I did.
Basically it is the characters who lift the book above its fairly predictable storyline. Main characters Nettie and Mo are obviously intended for each other, but as life throws up all the usual handicaps Freya is always there for Netta and Rhona for Mo. There is humor, drama and tears by the bucket full. All very enjoyable!
Still not a major fan of the genre but I must admit it provided some light relief to my overloaded shelf of mysteries and detective novels. Four stars from me.

An unforgettable, compulsively readable and engaging read, I loved it so much! Better than the Real Thing by Brooke Crawford is perfectly witty and adorable, beautifully written and a brilliant debut. I fell in love with Netta and Mo the main characters and also the supporting characters Freya and Rhona.
I was sensing ‘Love Actually’ vibes throughout (one of my favourite movies) although it’s nothing alike but it does has the Christmassy feels, a charismatic musician, heartbreak and romance.
Netta is almost forty, she’s a Melbourne school teacher and has just gone through a relationship split and is worried she’s never going to get pregnant after trying for months. Her eggs are dwindling away and she’s running out of time to become a mother, she also has a mortgage she can’t afford.
Just before her break up she discovers a secret diary under the floorboards in the house she’s living in and organises to return it to the notorious owner who llves in London and who’s willing to pay her to travel overseas to personally return it to him.
Mo is an inked, bad boy rock star, trying to resurrect his career and he’s always chased by the trash rags paparazzi.
When Mo and Netta connect up things get heated……
Congratulations to Brooke Crawford, what an impressive first book, definitely an author to watch out for! A must read for everyone and why not add to your Xmas reading it will put a smile on your dial.

I immediately liked the main character Netta as she struggles with infertility and always thinking she’s not enough for the men she dated.
Better Than the Real Thing is filled with so many wonderful ‘real’ characters. People that supported each other and welcomed strangers as if they were old friends. I loved them all which made reading Netta and Mo’s story so rewarding.
Brooke Crawford includes moments of light-hearted banter, emotional confessions, true friendships and a touch of spice to deliver a story that is emotional and heart wrenching, witty and heartwarming.
If you love romance stories with all the ups and downs, and will they won’t they, that will keep you eagerly turning the pages Better Than the Real Thing should be on your must buy list.

I had no idea what this novel would be like before I stepped into the world that surrounds Better Than The Real Thing by Brooke Crawford. But I am truly glad I read it for it has turned out to be quite a delightful surprise. Once I got into its groove, I could not stop reading and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the characters and seeing their developments. I was very sympathetic to Melbourne teacher, Netta Phillips, and rock star Morrison 'Mo' Maplestone. They each have some heavy issues to sort through but with wonderful support from each other and family, they rise to the top.
There are some serious topics addressed in this novel such as miscarriage, infertility, childhood trauma, sexual harassment, paparazzi hassling, negative limelight attention and the various pitfalls of fame. It covers many relationship break downs and stresses. But despite these mammoth challenges, the tone of the prose is not grim as there is a good mix of light and shade. And plenty of comic relief. Ultimately it is a beautiful love story. And Better Than The Real Thing shines with hope, second chances, fulfilled dreams and healing from sad memories. Psychological scars are addressed and realistic solutions offered. It is an extremely well delivered story with lots of humour and loving banter that buoy it amid the messy, stormy sessions. Being real is at the heart of this gem. Honesty can hurt but truth must be faced for fears to be conquered. Something both Netta and Mo realise.
Netta comes across as being strong and resilient. She has a maturity even at the start that later Mo must grow into. But one bad employer relationship experience when she was twenty, marked her heart and jarred her confidence. It affected her in ways that caused her to avoid certain locations and situations. But when she has a chance to meet her ‘fear’ head on, she does it with gusto and is able to overcome the hold it has had on her life for twenty years. I cheered to see this victory! Even though later she has another loss that is harder to come back from, with time and attention from others, she begins to heal.
Mo is a charismatic rock star in London (from Australia). He harbours a buried secret that comes to the surface when Netta discovers a journal that belonged to him as a child. It contains information he has kept hidden. He offers to send Netta first class from Australia to England to deliver his journal. Unexpected sparks erupt between them. He is drawn to her realness. Something he has not seen in the music realm. As Netta and Mo get closer, he is confronted by the painful memories in his journal. The guilt from the past throw him into a tailspin. Will he be able to sort through his emotions that are tied up in his mother’s death? Will encouragement and guidance from friends, and his feelings for Netta, help him pull through and receive the healing he needs? He must to stand a chance with her and to have their ‘cakes’ fully baked!
I could relate to a number of topics in this novel such as the expectations in the music industry and the trauma of miscarriage. The novel is so emotionally charged and real that it pulled me in completely. Beyond the messy painful encounters, there are some cloud nine extraordinary moments for the characters. The dialogue reflects perfectly the changes and contains some brilliant witty banter and honest heartfelt truths. There are words that hurt and some that heal. But there are also exciting adventures of flying first class, being dressed and made up by fashion greats for the red carpet, dining on fine foods, relaxing in posh accommodation, being whisked away in fancy limos— where Netta gets to have a taste of the rich and famous lifestyle. But most of all it is her chance at ‘real’ love with someone she connects with on a super deep level. All this happened because he wanted her to fly to England with his childhood journal that she miraculously found under the floorboards of her home. Who would ever think her life could take such a drastic turn: to come out of a poor relationship with her previous partner into one that defies all reason.
I loved every page and moment of this brilliant debut and highly recommend it. It is a wonderful story of hope, healing and second chances. This contemporary romance fiction glistens with originality and is the ‘Real Thing’ ! 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Told between Australia and the UK, the story follows Netta and Mo, two characters in their 40s with past pains and complex relationships. I absolutely loved reading about this pair growing and healing in their 40s!
Netta is a school teacher who yearns for a baby. When her relationship crumbles, she’s anxious that she’s running out of time.
Mo is a rock star trying to resurrect his career and repair his reputation.
When Netta finds Mo’s childhood diary, he’s desperate to keep its contents a secret and what unfolds is a story you won’t be able to put down!
Heartfelt and swoony. It’s a simply delicious read.
There’s a little rockstar romance, a little fake dating, a dash of forced proximity and a heap of feels, romance, reconciling with the past, taking chances, starting over and going after what you really want.
Consider me a devoted member of the Mo Fan Club forever more. The man is a dream! And the song! I just adored this beautiful, movie worthy moment.

Hot Damn, that was some kind of debut! I started it 3 days ago and smashed through it every second my demanding work schedule would allow.
This book is like a well stoked fire on a chilly London night, warming your heart and soul. Better Than the Real Thing tells the story of two people looking for happiness in all the wrong places and through a moment of chance find their lives unexpectedly intertwined.
What makes Brooke’s debut so strong;
Mo - tall, dark, brooding and covered in more body art than is considered medically safe for ovaries world wide.
Netta - the quintessential primary school teacher with a heart of gold and a relationship success rate equivalent to the Titanic’s maiden voyage.
Phenomenal side characters - Written to have true substance and give additional resonance to the story. My favourites were Audrey and Fletcher, Rhonda and her clan and of course Freya, Netta’s true soulmate.
Glorious settings - This story is a love letter to the streets of St Kilda and London alike. We want lounge on the sun-drenched couch in Netta’s apartment or see suit fittings in Mayfair. Crawford writes her settings like they are characters in their own right, vibrant and brimming with life.

Better than the Real Thing is a lovely book to read. You begin with Netta who is a primary school teacher who lives with Pete who has children from a previous relationship. Netta is desperate to have a baby of her own as at the age of 40 her biological clock is ticking quickly. Pete doesn't seem so keen. One day when cleaning out the wardrobe she comes across a diary hidden under a floorboard and finds that it's a childhood diary written by a now famous rock star who is now an adult. It very clearly says do not read, which she doesn't. She has two choices either throw it out or contact said famous singer and see whether they want it back.
Then we have Mo (Morrison) who is struggling to keep up the pace of producing Grammy winning records as well as supporting a charity he started with his brother. He is also struggling with secrets of his childhood. When he hears about the diary he is desperate to get it back and offers Netta a lot of money to deliver it in person. She needs the money to pay her mortgage and give her a chance to have that long awaited baby.
I can't believe this was a debut novel by Australian author Brooke Crawford, the writing was excellent and I read this one in a couple of days. Great storyline, characters and pace. Perfect book to take away on holidays - real feel good fiction.

Better Than the Real Thing completely stole my heart - a swoony, addictive romance that pulls you in from the very first page and does not let go. It’s about love, timing, and discovering that sometimes what you think you want isn’t nearly as good as what you actually need.
I truly could not put this book down - every chapter made me want to read “just one more,” and before I knew it, I was finished and already missing the characters. The chemistry, the emotions, the moments that made me smile … it was all so well done.
My only tiny complaint? I wish the epilogue didn’t skip such a long stretch of time. I wasn’t ready to let go and desperately wanted all the details of what came next - because I could have happily read so much more.
Overall, I highly recommend this one. If you love romance that feels real, heartfelt, and totally binge-worthy, add this to your TBR immediately.

God, two really fantastic books in a row. Never want this bubble to burst. Honestly, this was GOOD. It’s bloody hard to make a “rockstar” romance not seem cheesy (the last one I read made me cringe more than once), not this one though! A debut novel from an Aussie author that deserves so much hype. Seriously impressive. Loved every page.

Netta and Mo are superstar MCs, complemented extremely well by their respective besties, Freya and Rhona, who only want the best for the pair. If you ever need a cheer squad, these girls should be your first pick!
Christmas is brought to us via the winter wonderland that is Notting Hill. I absolutely felt the festive vibes amongst the vibrancy. Just wait until you meet Audrey and her little dog who are also hotel guests.

Ah, there were so many things done right in this book! The plot was layered, the life challenges were real, the romance was sizzling and Netta was an adorable character - she was likeable, realistic and not a damsel-in-distress. Plus the dual Melbourne x London setting.
I embraced the story wholeheartedly, as I loved that it featured celebrity-linked cinderella story for an older main character not in her twenties. Netta’s maturity showed in the practical ways she saw things and it made her three dimensional and ‘real’ to me. Her pregnancy struggles brought deeper tone to the rom-com aspect and grounded the story really well. My heart ached with her at many points in the book.
While I’m not usually a fan of insta-love, Netta and Mo’s chemistry didn’t feel like one even though they pretty much eyed each other as soon as they met. The dialogues and banters built their relationship well and I really enjoyed every minute of it.
This was a strong debut! I’m excited to read more from Brooke Crawford.

A really enjoyable book with likable characters, I especially loved Rhona!
The storyline was interesting and didn't shy away from some tough topics.

Brooke Crawford’s debut novel Better Than the Real Thing was an absolute gem that I could not put down. It was a feel-good, yet emotional read and I found it incredibly honest and relatable.
Netta Phillips is nearing her fortieth birthday and desperate to be a mother. With a slew of negative pregnancy tests, her relationship over and a mortgage she can’t afford, her plans are out the window. With the surprising discovery of a notorious musician’s childhood diary under her floorboards, things get even messier. Morrison ‘Mo’ Maplestone will do just about anything to keep the diary’s contents out of the tabloids and offers to pay Netta to personally return it to him in London. The money would mean she could keep her apartment and try assisted conception treatments, but she cannot bring herself to return to the UK after what happened there twenty years ago.
I absolutely adored both Netta and Mo. They faced real world problems with maturity and made believable choices along the way. The story was full of depth and there were some incredibly heartbreaking scenes. However, the sadness and grief were balanced out by the wonderfully warm relationships between Netta and her bestie Freya, the motherly Rhona and the wise and witty Audrey.
I also loved the London setting which brought back fantastic memories of my own years in the city. The story highlighted the shallowness of show business and the way the media reports on celebrities too.
The obvious chemistry between Mo and Netta was wonderful to read. It was both romantic and honest and so refreshing to read about characters of a similar age to me navigating life challenges in a relationship.

I absolutely loved this book! It was full of emotion and delivered a raw, heartfelt, and truly wonderful story. Every page kept me engaged. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for future books from this author. A perfect book to start off 2026.

What an outstanding debut novel by Brooke Crawford. Better Than The Real Thing is pure escapism and the perfect summer read, although it would be just as enjoyable cuddled up on the couch in winter! I had the absolute pleasure of reading an ARC of this book thanks to Harlequinaus and I highly recommend it.

ARC received thanks to Harlequin and Brooke. Better Than The Real Thing is Brooke's wonderful debut novel and was the book I didn't know I needed to read in 2025. Hooked from the beginning, it had all the things! Drama, romance, love, loss, friendship, while being relative, validating, and somewhat triggering. Brooke navigates the plot perfectly, with solid characters and storyline. This is THE perfect summer/holiday read. I am definitely keeping my eye out for more Brooke Crawford.

A great read full of emotions and I loved hearing about London and Melbourne and felt like I was there,the scenes are bang on and makes me want to go back.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book ..... it turned up Friday and come Saturday, it was finished! I just couldn't put it down. Netta and Mo are two characters genuinely broken by their pasts, brought together in a turn of events that makes you believe that love conquers all. There is joy, and sadness, and even a few tears (that was me .... the tears were mine 😂) and beautiful examples of friendship at all costs. My favourite character is Rhona, who is awesomely weird and wacky but who proves her loyalty over and over again.
