Fought over by Chinese, Thai, Malay, and Indonesian rulers, Singapore remained a minor island until the British took over. Singapore became a major crossroads. Over confident British military leaders were too confident and Japan conquered Singapore and the Malay states easily. Post-war, Singapore joindd Malaysia, but sought independence in 1965.

I liked being able to learn about the history of Singapore, a country I knew little about, and discovering how ever-changing the landscape is for this part of the world. I knew Singapore had a tumultuous history, but I didn't know to this extent. I do feel some information was stretched to lengthen the guide, and it would have been easier to read and digest with a pronunciation guide or timeline.

This is not just a history of Singapore, but is full of much information about the island state. I particularly liked the chapters "Contemporary Singapore" and "Conclusion - Can Singapore Survive?". The Conclusion addressed the challenges it might face in the future with its various neighbours. Overall, a very worthwhile read.

I thought the book was interesting. In particular, I was intrigued by the brief story of Singapore before the colonial era. This is a good place to start for anyone interested in a starting point about Singapore history.
