In the small town of Merwin, Mississippi, Miriam is an outcast. Her father abuses her, she lives in crushing poverty, and the townsfolk disdain her. Her faith in God sustains her, so when she hears the voice of God telling her that her child will be the second coming of Jesus, she rejoices. Her joy is short lived, because her archrival's simultaneous pregnancy could mean Miriam isn't the blessed receptacle. To Miriam's surprise, both babies are born female.
Miriam's daughter, Marianne, and her rival's daughter, Lovey, have very different childhoods. Marianne remains poor in Merwin, while distant, wealthy relatives raise Lovey. Through it all, Miriam remains convinced that God has special plans for her family. When Marianne dies in a tragic accident, she leaves behind a baby boy.
Miriam is convinced that the baby is the long-awaited messiah. Lovey helps her raise the child, Josiah, and the boy does seem to be touched by God. A child preacher, he attracts a small but dedicated following. Lovey supports his ministry, until the interference of nonbelieving outsiders threatens the existence of the newfound community of Zion, and the life of Josiah himself.
Much like every other military brat, I grew up with lots of change, lots of transcience. So much that I entertained myself with the alternate realities I could create in my head.
