What happens when a bunch of thirty-year-old degenerates survive an apocalyptic zombie outbreak? They get into even more trouble in the aftermath. Duh. That's right, Charlie Campbell and several of his loser friends have escaped a nightmare Chicago fraught with zombies and an occupying army, only to find the wild-lands beyond aren't any safer. Looking for sanctuary, this group of low-skilled and untrained anti-heroes must fight infected mobs, nerdy dads, tunnel dwelling freaks, special forces, and each other to survive. Facing death at every turn, the gang must make friends, find allies, adapt to this mad new world, and do it in a hurry. Will they survive? Will they find a cure? Will they drive each other crazy? But most importantly, will they run out of beer? If you liked the zombie mayhem, rowdy comedy, and over- the-top storytelling of the original Dead Drunk, you will be even more blown away by Dead Drunk II: Dawn of the Deadbeats. So adjust your trucker hat, light that generic cigarette, grab a cold one from the fridge, and let the shenanigans begin.
Richard Johnson is a writer and small business owner who grew up in Galesburg, Illinois during the 80's. He graduated from Monmouth College as a double major in History and English and earned a Masters degree in History with a teaching certificate from Western Illinois University. He currently lives with his growing family in a small town outside of Chicago.
Richard is a self-acclaimed expert in the zombie genre after spending countless hours watching B-rated horror movies. He is a good friend, a bad cook and a terrible dancer. If a real zombie apocalypse strikes, seek him out for protection. But bring plenty of beer.
Really, really wanted to love this one as much as the first, but for whatever reason I can't put my finger on, it fell flat. Took me a long time to read. I won't tell you to skip it... Nor will i tell you to move it up on your list of zombie reads.
How can you survive a zom-pocalypse? Get stone drunk and hope for a buddy to get bit before the zombie zeros in on you! A few close calls and a few missing friends lead the bachelor's into partially sobering up. Getting out and away from the building has to be accomplished. No food, females across from them, and the military gives the guy's a stiff spine to escape the dead, save the girls, and make it to a military pick-up at the park a 6 blocks away. But you know what they say about the best made plans.......💀
Definitely a different feel and vibe from book one. One reviewer declared it more like a serious zombie novel. I would agree with that. The party is over in book two as the main characters deal soberly with their new world and their new existence in a world gone mad.
I enjoyed this book better than the first. One character comes alive and makes this book much more entertaining. Guess I have to wait for the next book to see what happens!
Absolutely one of my all time favorite zombie reads. A hilarious, corny adventure. I love the characters and the verbal bashing’s they give each other with brotherly love. I never wanna stop reading and am dreading the end to this series.
Charlie Campbell and friends continue to try to escape the apocalypse and find a safe zone. Charlie is doomed from the start. Not only are his friends “losers” but they are the drunken, anti-heroic types as well. They encounter a mob of zombies at almost every turn, nuns at a nunnery, a semi-truck full of dildos and a wrestler. It is up to Charlie to keep everyone on track. Then there’s Left-Nut – a living man who is infected and while he craves the flesh, he satisfies his need with a beer – one long continuous one until someone he dislikes pops up or someone bleeds, then the beer is gone and he feeds. Charlie and friends encounter a used R.V. salesman who is just as slimy during the apocalypse as he was before; freaks from a tunnel have the group running scared and then there’s the abandoned little baby – when he cries the zombies come running. They pick up friends and allies along their journey but they lose some of them just as quickly. This group is mostly known as uneducated, unmotivated, two-fisted, beer drinking degenerates who are anything except heroic. Rambunctious and fun, their story of survival will have you rolling on the floor.
Then there is the group of women who were at a bachelorette party at the beginning of the apocalypse and their encounters with survivors while trying to find a safe spot to wait out the end of the world. They encounter their own special hell with the survivors they meet. Treating their experience as one long “slumber party” they encounter two undesirable men that should never have survived but who have the upper hand and feeling far more powerful than they should and a vicious serial killer. While the women have their moments, they are far smarter than they appear.
Both groups are trying to survive and during their struggles they encounter zombies as well as all kinds of friends, allies, and more. For these groups of survivors – thank goodness for beer, metal plates, beer, semi’s full of dildos and more beer!
This was a fun listen – the arguments the men had are reminiscent of the famous Cheech and Chong comedic exchanges.
The narrator, Neil Hellegers did an excellent job. He kept the voices straight and made them reflect the personalities of the characters. He kept the pace up and spoke clearly.
For Richard Johnson, the zombie apocalypse is not all serious flesh-eating zombies or stern faced military guys; no, he writes the unorthodox zombie meets Cheech and Chong like comedy with some sobering moments. His characters you either love or hate, but you can’t resist – you have to know what happens to each and every one of them! Johnson’s Dead Drunk II is well written and hugely hilarious, absurd, silly, antic-filled and side-splitting.
Need a break? Need something to take your mind off the world? This is it!
There were no issues with production.

The boys are back in town! And this time the girls are along for the ride. In the sequel to the HILARIOUS Dead Drunk novel, we get to find out what happened (and is continuing to happen) to the women. We also get to see some of the nastier guys try to redeem themselves as the aftermath of the zombie breakout causes them to reevaluate their own character. Some actually step up in very surprising ways while some stay douchebags. Seriously, it's time for Left-Nut to just die already. LOL! There's plenty of blood, guts, and death in this segment, even a death that left me a bit sad as that particular character had started to grow on me. Oh...and Zombie Russ... is... AWESOME!
I just finished it and it was as good as the first Dead Drunk. I felt like I was right there with them, I've felt like I was a part of the story. and I hope there is going to be a Dead Drunk Three. The only thing I wasn't happy with was the ending unless there's a third book in the works. This is a zombie book worth reading and waiting for.
Definitly a guys book. Reminded me how we used to bust each others chops when I was younger. Good fun read about the zombie appocolypse we're all waiting to happen.
