Books can be attributed to "Anonymous" for several reasons:
* They are officially published under that name * They are traditional stories not attributed to a specific author * They are religious texts not generally attributed to a specific author
Books whose authorship is merely uncertain should be attributed to Unknown.
Just finished reading this yet again. I debated whether to even add this to my list, as it really is in its own category and would own 6 stars by itself were that possible.
Nothing I say can praise this book even a fraction of what it deserves. It is the Word of God. It alone contains the words of eternal life.
Through the course of my life and search for knowledge, I have read the Qur'an, the Book of Mormon, the teachings of Buddha, atheistic and other philosophy, etc. None of them even approach the content, depth, cohesiveness, simplicity, wisdom, intelligence, historicity, fulfilled prophecy or self-testimony of the Bible. It stands alone far above the wisdom and religion of man. The divine direction / authorship of this collection of writings is plain to me. Soli Deo Gloria!
This was my first time reading the Bible all the way through in a year, and WOW what an experience! I am so glad I was able to keep on track and finish! Like wow, that was just amazing, and I’ll definitely be doing it again in the future.
Praise the Lord for giving us such an inspiring and a.w.e.s.o.m.e. Book!!
This last year I became strongly convicted that while I pour into my "professional development" life by reading homeschool books and have read practically every word Charlotte Mason has written, I've never read the Bible in its entirety.
I solved that this year and will continue to grow my faith education next year by reading through it again.
My biggest accomplishment this year was that i read the whole bible. I’ve learned so much and gotten so much closer to God, can’t wait to dive deeper next year!
Best book ever written. I have read it cover to cover for at least 15 consecutive years, 2008 - 2023. I read it through many other times from 1989-2007, but missed a few years in there from 1994-2001 when I had littles. Those years I read it, but maybe not cover to cover every year. 😋
okay, so here is how i will do this. i am not reading the entire bible at once, but i’m counting each book of the bible as a separate book and will “read it again” with each book, and write a review of each here.
RUTH: one of my favourite books, and the thing that stands out to me most is the depiction of mother daughter love which is so beautiful. the love story between her and boaz is secondary but still endearing
GENESIS: ooooh, the tea in this book. this has so many cool stories all in one, and i’m kind of surprised it hasn’t been turned into a tv show, just with all of it. it’s always been top 5 bible books for me because of the great plot. moses, you did your big one here
ESTHER: featuring two of my favourite bible babes, esther ofc but also vashti. i’m so glad they made a movie of this one.
JUDE: i think this is the shortest book in the bible? potentially? i’ve read it once years ago but i forgot how poetic it is sometimes lol. one of the nicer and less judgmental letters
PHILEMON: paul ate with this tbh, i’m usually his biggest critique but this was nice. free the slaves. i know that’s right. i understand that he is a christian and needed to lead with love but i feel as if philemon deserved a conk on the head. i wonder if he listened?
SONG OF SOLOMON: one of my forever favourite books, because it’s some of the most gorgeous love poetry i’ve ever read. it inspires my own poetry constantly. so sensual and tender, and that’s probably why they never taught it to us in church
PHILIPPIANS: this one is quoted allllll the time and i think my verse of the day was from here so i thought why not read it. comes across quite pretentious at times but i see why people love it
I’ve never done a review of this magnitude, but I feel that it warrants the deserved praise and experience of having read it. And, I would give this a 10-star if I could.
I just finished reading the NKJ Bible in chronological order of events. I started in Jan of 2019 and finished Feb of 2021. I have to tell you it was not an easy read. I enjoy inspirational/Christian fiction. I’ve dabbled in historical fiction; I like some crime/government conspiracy fiction as well. What this incredible book of over 900 pages offered me, no other book ever can. There was mystery, elements of miracles/mysticism, inspiration, gore and death and tragedy which I can’t always stomach, but there was something else. The Bible offered the remarkable accounts of God’s purpose for our existence, his detailed construction of our humanity, his undeniable love for each and every one of us. HIS jealous rage for when we move away from HIM. HIS fatherly wrath for when we disobey. HIS continuous call for us to return to HIM. All the heroic messengers/prophets who helped spread the WORD with their God-breathed wisdom.
There were bravery and stupidity among the kings and rulers. The fighting for territory and power. There was graphic mass genocide and destruction of nations as well. But then there was hope in God’s begotten son Jesus! The parables, the stories, the miracles, and then a senseless death of man who was crucified for telling the TRUTH. Until a miracle…How one man overcame the world through HIS resurrection.
There are so many emotions that I experienced. But none more amazing than reading the book of Revelation where everything is coming to pass and being revealed right before our eyes. There are still so many things I can’t understand, but one thing for sure is our salvation is in Jesus Christ. We need to get right this moment.
I highly recommend this book. It is life-changing and heart-changing. You will want to read it again and again.
It doesn’t seem fair to give the Bible, God’s Holy Word a review, because it is not simply a book. It is His Word, the truth, the book that not only you read but one that reads you, His Word is, ““Living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 ESV). All need to read it, seek the Lord and follow Him, because life is found in Him. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, we are traitors to Him and deserve death and punishment. But, as is foreshadowed and prophesied in the Old Testament He sent His Son, who took our penalty and offers us life if we follow Him and trust in Him. Seek the Lord who offers this life.
“The Bible is not like any other book. It is the Book of books. We customarily call this book the Holy Bible. Its holiness is found in its otherness. It is a sacred because it transcends and stands apart from and above every other book. It is holy because its ultimate Author is holy. It is holy because its message is holy. And it is holy because its content is designed to make us holy.” -R.C. Sproul
It took several years to read it cover to cover, but I did. While I've been reading in it since I was a child, there was a lot I learned by this concerted reading. For one thing, I always understood that it was a chronological account, but that's not wholly true. The Old Testament has several very clear sections, but the Psalms, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes divide two sections that are historical and those sections overlap. The latter part - the Prophets - is particularly woven with various Prophets writing about the same periods. As a whole, the Bible is far more violent than I had imagined. We fret about the war(s) in the Middle East, but that has been the condition of the area nearly constantly throughout history. Yes, I learned a lot, but I have far more questions than I did when I started so it's time to start over with a Study Bible.
So far, this is my favorite translation of God's holy word. I also read from the OSB, which uses the NKJV for the New Testament. I much prefer the Hebrew for the Old Testament, although I do respect the Greek OT to an extent. The NKJV copy I had was like an almost study bible; it had no commentary, but it had notes at the bottom that showed when verses were quoted or ideas were quoted. It also showed major differences in the Greek/Hebrew or in different manuscripts, which I found to be an amazing feature. It also had notes for places in scripture that are likely not original to the authors and came out of tradition, such as the end of Mark or John 8 with "let he who is without sin cast the first stone." I really liked this feature as well. I think I'm going to read through the ESV next, so look out for a review on that in like a year I guess.
I had a goal, way back in college, to read through the Bible 100 times by the age of 50.
This is number 87.
For a while, I thought this goal had fallen out of reach, maybe. Maybe not. Whether I hit it or not, I hope the value I put on this book can be told through the attempt. In a far more important way, what I value is not even the book itself but the impact that the Bible has had on my life.
This is supposed to be a "review" of the book, but what right do I or any of us have to do so? What we should instead do is let the Bible "review" us. Is it changing us? Are we living up to the commands and dictates found in these pages? I know that I have a long, long way to go. But hopefully, with each time through, and with each daily reading, I become just a little bit more like him. Day by day, glory to glory, I pray that I am reflecting Him just a little bit better.
This is my second year reading through the entire Bible. Who am I to give it a rating? I laugh at my audacity of rating it last year…as if I have authority to rate God’s scripture, maybe the second time through taught me a bit more about humility…I hope so.
Once again, I was incredibly moved by the unrelenting Love and Mercy of God towards us. The Bible is full of people like me, selfish/complainers! It was a Constant reminder of humility, grace and love in a more difficult year of my life.
Jesus turns every prideful desire of our hearts upside down and I am amazed once again of His Love and plan of Salvation.
I have much more to learn and am thankful for bible scholars and historians who shed light on the more difficult passages.
I recommend reading it every year. The best book out there. It’s a love letter to us from God, while spilling all the tea and telling all the true drama you could ever imagine. It’s a wild ride. I also recommend using the Bible Project (YouTube videos) to explain as you go. I read the Bible every year and will continue as long as I am able. I get something new from it each time.
This is the third time I’ve done the Bible in a year reading plan. I started it this time in maybe the fall of 2024 and was determined to finish it by today so I can start over in the New Year. It’s easy to miss sections of the Bible when you read a part at a time and never go through it in its entirety. I learn so much every time I’ve made it all the way through.
4 because as my study Bible, I got to see what was added and taken away from...got pretty heated. Thank God for lots of translations and people working on ironing out biases.
