✨ The epic conclusion to the Earth & Shadows duology, where, in a court built on secrets, trust is the most dangerous weapon of all.
A queen crowned in shadow. A realm on the brink. And a god waiting to be freed.
Efia Mathonwy never wanted a throne—but now that it’s hers, she’ll burn kingdoms before she gives it up.
As war stirs between the Seelie and Unseelie courts, Efia must unite bitter rivals, rally dangerous allies, and walk the knife's edge between politics and rebellion. But unity is fragile, and enemies are watching from within. When a betrayal cuts too deep and an ancient bargain threatens everything she’s built, Efia must risk unleashing the very god of death himself to survive.
Bound by fate, hunted by many, and tethered to a mate whose love might cost him everything, Efia will either reshape the realm—or fall with it.
Because the High Queen has risen.
And reckoning is here.

Gem L. Preston is an international bestselling fantasy author from a small town in South Wales, where her love of video games and deep obsession with Welsh mythology collided to create Prince of the Ancients— and she hasn't stopped writing magical chaos since.
Her books are full of fierce heroines, morally grey men, shadowy magic, and slow-burn romantic tension that will emotionally ruin you (in the best way). Her characters are brave, bold, and brilliant — unlike Gem, who is terrified of moths and would much rather be hiding under a blanket with a cup of tea.
When she’s not writing (or *trying* to write while her two small daughters reenact a WWE match in the background), you’ll usually find her reading, gaming, or deep-diving into her favourite fandom theories. Marvel, Harry Potter, Star Wars, K-pop, and anime (yes, *Jujutsu Kaisen* owns her soul) — if there’s chaos and heartbreak involved, she’s probably already obsessed.
Gem has been living with IIH (a rare neurological condition) and a heart disorder for over a decade, and she’s passionate about raising awareness for chronic illness and invisible disabilities. She believes in building stories — and communities — where strength doesn’t always look like perfection.
This book did not disappoint. It was fast paced, tied up loose ends left from book 1 and gave me a little slow (ish) burn between the two MCs. I really enjoyed it but I would have loved even more world building and war/fight build up. I'm not disappointed though because I thoroughly enjoyed it! 🫶🏻
This book is the second and final book in The earth and shadows duology. This book starts right where the first book ended. The first book’s ending left me shocked so I’ve been anticipating to read this. This book is fast paced with a few twists.
I love Efia and how badass she is. I love how she truly mad Ansel work for it. And Ansel truly yearns. I did guess what her plan for the wedding was going to be, but I loved reading about it anyway. I love Wen, truly such a loyal friend. I do wish Benton could have gotten a better ending. I’m glad though that Efia got the happy ending she derserved.
However I was slightly disappointed with the ending and how easily they defeated Lilah. I wish we could have seen a bit more of a challenge.
Honestly the book is a 5 star, but it’s a 4 star compared to the first (just cause the first was too good). I absolutely loved the way the loose ends came together underway. I wasn’t expecting the twists and turns that came when they came and me gasping underways! Wen is such an amazing character and friend, Effie and Ansel - I loved watching them grow together and separate.
this is absolutely my favorite duology now and I’m so sad it’s over. Thank you for letting me read this! (This is an arc review but it’s my honest opinion).
4.5⭐️ What a fantastic ending to this series!!!! The pacing, the continuation of the world building and characters is outstanding. I laughed, screamed and gasped all the way through; the twists are brilliant and surprising. Beautifully written and a brilliant ending to a truly spectacular duology
At this point, you can call me biased because I believe Gemma's books are always a solid five+++ stars read for me, and I will die on that hill.
This is the second and final book in the Earth and Shadows duology. I absolutely enjoyed every second of it, even though it took me longer than usual to finish (because being a responsible adult is apparently a thing. 0 stars, do not recommend)
Now let's get to my thoughts about the book:
Efia needs to be called the ice queen in this book. Poor Ansel 🤣🤣 I mean, on the one hand, he deserved it, but on the other, ouch 🤣
After listening to Gem in a podcast and seeing the vampires in this book, I got so excited! (iykyk) ✌🏻😗
Wen is still so precious. I love her to bits. "If I ever sound like that old faerie, feel free to shove me in a pond and hold me there. Gently, of course."
This book was amazing! So very well written in a classic Gem L Preston way. I screamed at how unhinged Efia was in this book. The plot twists that you don't see coming are always hiding in a corner. She shatters you in the best bookish way possible!
There were quite a few chapters when I yelled, wanted to throw my kobo against something, giggled, grinned, and teared up. The emotions that Gemma weaves in her storytelling are something else. Some instances you THINK you see a certain outcome coming your way, only for her to pull the rug from under your feet with a plot twist that would have you fall onto your ass (....figuratively speaking.. 👀)
There was a moment when I was getting pitchforks ready for a certain character, but thankfully, things went well. I was scared there for a moment 🥹
I better shut up before I go and spoil the plot for everyone. Simply go read the book! Available now at that big online store everyone shops at!
Thank you Gemma for the opportunity to read the ARC! Always looking forward to your next creation!
I AB-SO-LU-TELY loved the first book, but NOTHING could've prepared me for book two.🥹
First, huge thanks to @gem|prestonbooks for letting me be part of the ARC team! Getting to read book 2 so soon after the first (after a mini breakdown when I realized it wasn't out yet🤣), thank you for sparing me the pain!
Now onto the good stuff.
Efia's character growth? Phenomenal. That girl has been through SO much heartbreak, manipulation, while being raised by someone who made her believe love was a weakness... However, she still loved louder than anyone da. She fought, broke down, healed, and loved again. My girl deserved her happy ending.❤️
Ansel... what a rollercoaster. I didn't know how to feel about him through most of the book. With all the twists from book 1, I learned one thing: TRUST. NO. ONE.🥲 But I'm so glad my faith in him wasn't misplaced. My heart couldn't take it otherwise!
This series gave me The Cruel Prince vibes with a morally grey FMC who does all the dirty work while the MMC follows her, completely in awe of her power and grit.
If you love fantasy with a sprinkle of romance, books that make you CRY, and stories that leave you with a brand-new obsession then you NEED this series.🥰
To Gem: please keep writing, dreaming, and abusing your incredible talent. The world needs more of your magic. You're a mastermind. Never forget it.🫶
I stayed up late to finish this. I am writing this with tears in my eyes at 3am. Good tears. I think. This book delivered the beautiful banter filled relationships between friends, tension by the bucket load and the perfect amount of revenge and retribution. Wen, you are a little sweetheart and I will fight for you! She continues to be a sassy but pure little moonbeam, who you just can’t help but love. Ansel and Effia, both characters who have grown so much in strength despite the adversity thrown their way. Maybe they end up together, maybe they ignore the mate bond (I’m not telling) but the pining throughout is so sweet. And Beinon, dear sweet Beinon, I’m not sure I liked you very much after the ending of book one, and most of this one, but ah well. Guess you did your best. For anyone who has faced challenges and trauma due to parents, this story is hard hitting. But it helped me confront some of my monsters, I’m sure it’ll help you too. I’m still angry but this helped me process some of the feelings, and reach some peace. Gemma, thank you once again for allowing me to have my heart shattered before publishing day. May you continue to break and mend my heart on rotation. (I’m doing this willingly!)
(In other words, I received an arc copy from the author, and all thoughts shared in this review are my own)
Games of the Faerie Queen completes the duology that is the Earth & Shadows series. With Efia having won the guild trials, she is now the High Queen, however, her political future is not going to be smooth sailing as the actual games are only just beginning. Still, despite having made a bargain, she has Wen and Ansel, even though her thoughts regarding the latter are still uncertain. At the same time, she is certain that changes must be made to unify the land and if it means playing the game, then she will do it.
I don’t know how Gem does it but every time I read something of hers, I feel like I’m all over the place; I don’t think I’ve ever read a single book without ever crying or tearing up. While I had a slightly harder time with The Faerie Guild Trials, none of that could have prepared me for the games being played with my heart in this one. The storytelling and world is beautiful but the writing is so hauntingly beautiful that every feeling and every interaction lingers. I can’t get over how well written the characters and interactions are in this.
Thank you so much to Gem L. Preston for gifting me this ARC! All opinions are my own.
This second book really delivered! It picks up right where the first one left off, and the pace doesn’t let up. There’s action, mystery, and some great twists—plus it wraps up all the loose ends from book one in a really satisfying way.
Efia is such a strong and clever main character, and I loved watching her grow. Her dynamic with Wen was one of my favourite parts—so much heart there. And the chemistry between Efia and Ansel? Seriously hot. It was great seeing her let go and just fall for him.
I would’ve loved a bit more world-building and a deeper look at the war and aftermath, but what we did get was still really powerful. Ansel’s redemption arc was a nice touch, and I only wish we had more time with him and Efia together. Wen totally stole the show though—brilliant, stubborn, and just so memorable.
This series might be short, but it’s packed with epic moments, a bit of spice, and loads of fun. If you’re into romantasy, this one’s a must-read!
I was devastated after the ending of book 1 and I couldn’t wait until the book 2 was released, luckily I got the chance to read the Arc for Games of the Faerie Queen.
This is book 2 in the Earth & shadows duology, It continues right where the last one left off. In this book we follow Efia deal with the fallout after the last book ended, It was very satisfying to see what a strong female character Efia is.
What a fantastic ending to this series, the pacing, the twists, the world and character building was amazing.
“..The courts are full of serpents, And I intend to be the deadliest one of all.”
Thank you for letting me read the Arc, I really enjoyed and recommend this series! I also bought the physical book and I can’t wait to display it on my shelves!
The constant battles in Efia’s mind are clear from the beginning of this book. Her journey was going to be a hard one, no matter which route she chose. As well as all the matters of being a queen in an uncertain world, she is trying to find out who she really is without anyone controlling her every movement.
Wen is Efia’s light in the dark. Beinon redeems himself. Ansel faces his truth.
All of these things show Efia a little piece of brightness in a broken world; a world filled with shadows.
‘You need to run with the shadows, to walk in the light.’
Same as with The Faerie Guild Trails, the snippets of lore, & personal letters & documents at the beginning of each chapter gives important information without drawing out the storyline unnecessarily (each linked to the chapter in some way).
What a way to end this duet! I feel like I left a piece of myself with the faeries…
This was a great book - I think I might have liked the first one a little more, but this was still fun and I wanted to keep on reading! I enjoyed the little spice in the middle, it was a nice little intermission before the end.
Did I want a little more action? Possibly yes Did I get emotional? Not really. I never really got deep with the characters. But I still enjoyed the experience of this book. Am I still satisfied with what I got? Yes Would I recommend this series to others? Yes! The story is great, I like the characters and the plot twists, even when some I could have seen coming. But when I read my brain shuts off and just see the world unfold before me.
And gods I love Wen, such a brilliant and stubborn character!
✨”The moonlight greets me as I slip back into the night. And then the air is ripped from my lungs.”✨
This was so good!! I can sometimes struggle getting back into a series after a gap but I felt like I could jump straight in which was nice. I went into this book not knowing it was the last in the series, but it really was the perfect ending. It felt BETTER than book 1, which I also really enjoyed. Efia and Ansel are both complex characters, and both represented adults with childhood trauma pretty well. But I think my favourite character is Wen. I’m trying very hard not to spoil anything despite just wanting to tell everyone all about it; so I’ll just say that if you enjoyed book 1 you will enjoy this one more.
🖤🌙I read an arc of this book and am leaving an honest review voluntarily🌙🖤
I don’t think I can express how much Efias journey and growth means. How impactful her story is. I adored book 1, rereading it ready for reading this book was like coming home but then reading this book… I think I felt every emotion known to man during these pages. Ansel and Efia - sublime and I love that she did not just roll over and he had to work for her forgiveness Beinon- tell me why after everything I sobbed for him. Wen - oh how I love thee I love the little twists and surprises Gem always sprinkles in and how she makes her characters just so human so you can’t be arsed relate to them. Another amazing story Gem. Be so proud for yourself Thank you for the honour of allowing me to read this early.

Thank you to the author for this arc in exchange for an honest review!
After really enjoing the first book in the duology I was excited for this one but I have to say it fell a bit short for me. While tying up all loose ends, I missed a bit of world building and would have preferred to spend more time on the big war that wasnt so big in the end.
I really loved Wen and Ansel! Such good and loyal (and funny!) companions for Efia and we love a man that yearns.
The book could have been longer to pack more information and storytelling in it but it was otherwise well written (apart from a couple of repetitive phrases) and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this duology. Thanks for letting me read it as an arc reader!
First, I would like to thank Gem for a copy of this book. i loved the first book, and I was really excited to get an ARC of the end of the duology.
Games of the Faerie Queen is a big rollercoaster of emotions, betrayals and schemes to win a game no one ever wanted to play. I cried and laughed and felt the tension Efia was feeling through the book.
The way everything comes together, and how everything ends up developing was heartbreaking but beautiful at equal parts. Which means I was screaming at my kindle and smiling at equal parts.
I fell in love with this little world, the big diversity of characters, and how each of them give a little of themselves in the story. I'm sad to say goodbye to this duology, but it's the perfect little fantasy series to read.
I lovedddd this book! It was fast paced, tied up all the questions and loose ends from the first book and then ending just left you feeling complete.
Efia is still a badass like within the first but perhaps more so as she comes to realise she creates her path and who she’ll become in the future. Wen! Oh Wen I love her so much she’s such a sweet character, stubborn but ever so sweet and the greatest friend for Efia. My favourite little duo!
However, one thing I would’ve liked more of was the build up to the war, maybe some strategy insight or maybe more insight to the war raging outside.
But overall an amazing read and I cannot wait to read the rest of her books on my shelf!
Efia took decisive action to protect herself in her new role as queen. I enjoyed the mix of court intrigue and violence in the shadows. The romance with Ansel built slowly toward some quick spice, but I would have liked to see more of him. Wen’s friendship brought some light to Efia’s darkness.
The pace was mostly steady, making it easy to keep turning pages, with only a little lull in the lead up to the climax. I would have liked more/clearer world-building about the courts and the bargains made in order to have a firmer sense of stakes as the plot unfolded.
Overall, this was a fun duology about found family, love and breaking free.
After the events of The Faerie Guild Trials, I was chomping at the bit for the next book and it did not disappoint. Full of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat, this was the perfect way to conclude Efia’s story. Was I screaming at her for her stubbornness at the start? Yes. Was I also screaming when she found that loophole (which I’m proud to say I figured out in the last book)? Yes. Basically a lot of screaming. Also Ansel? He’s so soft for Efia and I LOVE it. A book from his pov, I beg. While this concludes Efia’s journey, I can’t wait to see what else Preston has in store for this world. Hopefully a lot more!
I was gifted this book as an ARC for an honest review.
I loved this book. It brought out all my emotions, even made me shed a tear or 2. It was a fantastic follow on from Book 1, and I wish it was a trilogy because I could have kept reading about these characters for a lot longer than just a duology.
I really enjoyed the plot, I felt it flowed well and the pace was good. There was plenty of action, but also a depth to the story that made you really feel for these characters. I love Gem. L. Preston's writing, I find it so descriptive and really paints a clear picture for me of what is happening in the story which I need to enjoy it.
I need to know more about Wen! I'm hoping maybe one day we will get a novella about her backstory and what she was doing whilst Efia was in the trials, and also during the events of book 2.
Would definitely recommend The Faerie Gild Trials duology if you love action, romance, a little smut, a good plot, and fantastic characters.
Personally preferred the first book in this series. This was a sweet and quick read. But I felt could have gone deeper into the character and the plot.
I knew it was going to be a duology but this book felt a little rushed to me.
I still love the characters and their growth in this book but was disappointed by how quickly they seemed to defeat Lilah in the end when for the majority of the book she is made out to be incredibly hard to beat and outsmart.
Wen has my heart. Smart and stubborn and deeply cares for those around her. I truly loved her in this book more so than the first.
Efia is still a strong, badass fmc and showed some vulnerability here which I love.

I'd been looking forward to this book since I read the first in the duology and it did not disappoint. Efia is an amazing FMC, string willed and powerful and fully capable of looking after herself, so it was really nice to see her learn to depend on others a little and let them in to see the real her. I love that she forgave Ansel but also made him work for it, they are such a great couple and deserved their happy ending. And I love that we see more of Wen, and how strong and stubborn she is, I'd also love to see more of her story. This book made me smile and made me cry (Beinon really caught me off guard 😭) and I really enjoyed it.

I loved the first book, but nothing could've prepared me for book two.🥹
Getting to read book 2 a year after the first one was released was amazing (and both releases were so close to my birthday it felt like a birthday gift so thank you Gemma!❤️)
It was lovely to see all the character growth after book 1, and I was happy for the happy ending! 🥹❤️
This series also gave me The Cruel Prince vibes so I would definitely recommend reading it if you loved that series.
This is the second and final book in the Earth and Shadows series, another fantastically written book by Gem L. Preston that I couldn't put down. After loving the first book in the series, I was excited to see how it would continue, and I was not disappointed. It's a fantastic ending to the series that kept me hooked and made it impossible to put down. That's why I devoured it in a day, finishing it late into the night. I grew to love the characters, especially Efia, and enjoyed her character growth and development. I highly recommend this series!
As much as I enjoyed this sequel picking up right where the first book left off, it felt a bit rushed for me and therefore isn’t rated as highly. I would have loved to see more world building and character development in this book as I wasn’t hooked by any of the characters or settings this time.
I am very grateful to have received this book as an ARC, but felt that the use of repetitive adjectives and phrases, with some grammatical errors (and possible editing errors) made it difficult for me to be fully engaged in the story.
Did I get a ARC of this book and just forget to write my review because i needed time to process? Yes, I absolutely did.
This book did not disappoint. It was fast paced, tied up loose ends left from the first book and gave me a little slow burn. Honestly the book is a 5 star, but it’s a 4 star compared to the first.
I wasn’t expecting the twists and turns that came when they came and me gasping underways! Wen is such an amazing character and friend, Effie and Ansel - I loved watching them grow together and separate.
Yes Efia! Give them hell!! 🫡😌 The end of book 1 had my jaw on the floor from how blindsided I was with the twists & betrayal, I had very high hopes for this conclusion. It was worth the wait!
The TENSION with Efia & Ansel 🥵 I loved that she didn’t give in to his betrayal for a long time but not in an immature way.
The plot itself got maybe a little slow/weak in the middle. The ending was brilliant, it wasn’t rushed and I think all loose ends were tied up really well - a very satisfying ending!
Efia as the FMC was brilliant - a SUPER strong character, love her!! 😍
Overall it was a fun read. Compared to the first book in the duology this book moved at a slower pace so it wasn’t as “I can’t put it down” type read. I also thought the build up to the war dragged a little and then the actual war itself was over in a page. I really enjoyed more Efia and Wen in this book, obv the love between ansel and efia was amazing too. Again not as fast paced/action as the first but still a fun read.

I remember being hooked from the first chapter of book one—book two did the very same! (Immensely grateful I didn’t have to wait any longer and got to read this as an ARC) Efia… you are SO stubborn and it’s precisely why I love you. I get it. You fought and did so admirably well. The twists and turns were a thrill, and it all concluded beautifully. Honestly, I loved it. (And would’ve eaten up far more pages)
I loved the FMC in this series, she was strong throughout and I loved her scheming. I would’ve loved to see more of Efia and Ansel but I liked the redemption arc from him. I loved the ending and that we got a glimpse of the aftermath of everything that happened!
