In 2009, Barry Finlay went up a mountain as an accountant and came down as a philanthropist. After over thirty years in various financial roles with the Canadian federal government, he took his life in a different direction and climbed Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro at age 60 with his son Chris. The climb and their fundraising efforts to help kids in Tanzania changed his life in a number of ways, including the start of his writing journey. He wrote his first book, the popular Kilimanjaro and Beyond: A Life-Changing Journey with his son in 2014.

He followed that up with the hilarious travel memoir, I Guess We Missed The Boat, and then The Marcie Kane Thriller Collection was born. Each of the thrillers has a socially relevant theme.

Now, he has introduced a new character named Jake Scott in a mystery series. The first in the series, Searching For Truth, debuted in 2021. The Guardians of Truth followed, and The Secret Truth was released in the fall, 2024. Shadows of Truth is scheduled for release on September 15, 2025.

In 2023, he decided to write a book around his popular quote, "Every mountain top is within reach if you just keep climbing." He interviewed eight people facing a variety of challenges and wove his own story into the motivational Just Keep Climbing: Inspirational Stories for Overcoming Challenges and Living Life.

Barry's books have received multiple literary awards, and he was named to the Authors Show's list of "50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading" in 2012. In 2013, he received the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for his philanthropic work in Africa. He lives in Ottawa, Canada, with his wife Evelyn.

The premise of an accountant's wife disappearing and his having to navigate a foreign world of menace and evil men is excellent. What is not excellent is the execution. My main complaint is that there is too much narrative--readers are told the story rather than letting them experience the story through dialogue and action, though the author came through with more action at the end. To a large extent, the narrative keeps the reader hooked, and the author maintained the characters' true nature. Since Mr. Findlay found a measure of success as a non-fiction writer, my guess is that non-fiction is more his niche. But that's not to say he couldn't become a more entertaining fiction writer over time.

The Vanishing Wife by Barry Finlay
Narrated by Trevor Finlay

I received a copy of the book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Mason and Sami Seaforth have the outward appearance of the perfect, happily married couple. Having been married for several year and celebrating yet another joyous wedding anniversary, they couldn't be happier. A successful couple at both work and in the home, their path in life settled before them, simple and content.

On the morning after their anniversary celebration, Mason wakes up earlier than ususal to find the other side of the bed vacant and no immediate sign of Sami. Thinking she had gone to grab a drink or maybe stretch her legs, he rises to join her but after several hours pass with still no news of and being totally out of the ordinary, he can't help the rising panic that begins to gather in the pit of his stomach.
What follows is a tale of crime and intrigue which I was looking forward to and once started I was not disappointed. Barry Finlay has written a book with a desire for justice and describes shrewdly Mason's primary change from his ignorance at the start through to the end, passing through unfairness, injustice, tyranny and finally justice. Readers will be drawn to the intrigue of solving the puzzle and the securityof seeing justice done in the end.

In this well written crime novel there are several victims in one way or another with the protagonist actively trying to solve the crime or enigma, to outmaneuver the antagonist and to expose them as the criminal that they are – the big scene that as a reader we eagerly await.
The Vanishing Wife lays this out wonderfully, displaying cunning and brilliance which must be praised.
The narrator, Trevor Finlay, is plausible and valuable audibly, presenting the novel in a logical and believable manner, with a compelling tone that reveals believable tension and emotion, grounding the reader with gut reactions and dialogue.

I rate The Vanishing Wife 5 out of 5 stars.

Good reading

I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. Good storyline, good characters but the characters didn't seem to grow during the story and parts seemed dragged out or unnecessary.

I enjoyed getting to know the main characters in this book. I plan on reading more about them in the other books in the series.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Barry when he did a guest post on my blog about his award winning travel book, I Guess We Missed the Boat. Impressed by his writing and personality, I jumped at the chance to review his latest book, The Vanishing Wife. Although I am a bit late in posting this review, I loved reading the book and here are my thoughts on it.

The Vanishing Wife had me intrigued because of its blurb. The cover is nothing very special but the blurb will interest readers to pick up the book.

I was jolted right from the moment I opened the book which starts with the intriguing statement "Mason Seaforth was waiting". The first thought that came to my mind was, who is he waiting for? Me? and then I remember feeling spooked and laughing a jittery laugh. Maybe this was because I knew it was a mystery and that it was almost midnight when I started the book, anyway, I felt spooked.

The story goes that a respectable and happily married couple celebrate their twentieth anniversary but the next day the wife disappears leaving the husband bewildered and scared. Unable to understand why and where his wife went, he decides to investigate and the layers of secrets that come out had me gasping, feeling shocked and then admiring the wife sometimes.

The plot was promising and while Barry executes it beautifully, I did feel that it had more potential and could have been made more crisp and racy. The first part of the story is a bit slow but the latter part is racy and full of action. There is more 'telling' and less 'experiencing' in the story which although interesting could have been downright splendid had there been more 'experiencing' in the story which would make the reader feel like he is experiencing everything himself.

The settings and scenes are expertly sketched and I could visualize the sunroom where a distraught husband sat waiting for his wife to return or the scary darkness in the climax when each and every second had me waiting with bated breath to see what would happen next.

The author writes simply and is successful in engaging the readers with his witty dialogues, heartfelt emotional play and the general knowledge tit bits that he shares of the places shown in the book which had my overall knowledge of these places enhanced greatly. It clearly shows that the author has done his research when he talks of the police procedures, describes the places of action and takes us into the minds of the victim and the criminal.

The characterization is admirably done and I could relate with Mason, his wife Sami, Sami's best friend Marcie and the villains along with the police officers. All the characters feel real and the situations such that I could feel myself feeling empathetic towards the protagonists who find themselves in such extreme situations. The one character that impressed me the most was the main hitman. I wont disclose his name but the insight into his mind, his cold motivation behind killing people mercilessly and the ideals that dictated his life had me shivering in fear and grateful that he was not real! Reading about him, I now feel more scared knowing that there are such people in this world who feel nothing and are willing to harm random people just for money and a false sense of loyalty.

I also admired Marcie who is a good friend and willing to lay down her life to save her friend. Her dynamics with Mason had me smiling, impressed and then chuckling watching her tease the bad men.

All in all, I enjoyed reading The Vanishing Wife and give it 4 stars out of 5 and strongly recommend it to all lovers of mystery and suspense. Barry is a talented writer and with this book shows that he can write fiction as easily as he writes non-fiction. I wish him the best and hope to read more from him in the future.

I received the book from the author and I am very thankful to him. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

I was given this book by the author for an honest review.

What I enjoyed about this story was the interesting plot. This is a mystery suspense thriller that will bring a reader in and make them want to finish the book as soon as possible.

There are some aspects of the story that I think could have been stronger. There was not a lot of dialogue between many of the characters. The story is told from first and third person which was confusing at times because one character would go from first then to third person but then later on it would be a completely different character that arrives in third person. It was a little confusing for me when I first encountered it but I eventually got used to Mr. Finlay's writing style. The characters are developed enough to get a sense of what kind of people they are but I personally did not connect with any of them. Mason was your normal every day accountant dad who loved his family. During the story, there were many times where I wondered if why he didn't do this or that or say something else; it seemed like Mason just didn't have a lot of common sense. I felt the same way about his wife when she entered the story. They were believable characters because there are plenty of people that don't have common sense but I personally didn't relate to them. Mason not having common sense and decision making skills did make some of his antics quite funny in the book. The spunky funny independent Marcie was my favorite character. She was a personality that was refreshing throughout the whole story because she provided a lot of comic relief.

Overall, I would recommend this book if you want to read an entertaining mystery thriller with some laughter. I would like to thank Mr. Finlay for sharing his work with me.

This book is an absolutely gripping crime thriller that had me hooked from the very first chapter. What begins as a seemingly ordinary morning quickly spirals into a heart pounding race against time, and the author does a masterful job of turning an everyday man into a believable, deeply compelling hero. Mason Seaforth is not a trained operative or hardened criminal, he’s a husband, a father, and an accountant and that is exactly what makes his journey so powerful.

The emotional stakes are high throughout, driven by Mason’s desperation to protect his family at all costs. As Sami’s hidden past is slowly revealed, the tension escalates brilliantly, and each discovery adds another layer to the mystery. The supporting characters, especially the strong willed and fearless Marcie Kane, are well developed and bring both grit and heart to the story.

The antagonists are chillingly effective. Aaron Marshall and Greg Johnson, “The Force,” feel genuinely dangerous, and every encounter with them carries real consequences. The action scenes are sharp, fast paced, and realistic, making Mason’s transformation learning to handle a Glock, make life or death decisions, and navigate a criminal underworld feel authentic and earned.

What truly elevates this novel is its balance of suspense, emotion, and surprise. The twists are smart and unexpected without feeling forced, and the ending is both satisfying and thought provoking. This is a polished, expertly written thriller that lives up to its accolades and then some. A must read for fans of crime fiction and high stakes suspense, and a well deserved five star read.

Lent this with a free Kindle Unlimited trial.
For some reason I also lent the next few books (with the third being from the title "Remote Access" my main interest), but will probably skim reviews and blurb and might return them back to KU unread.
Currently at 9% percent and since the beginning it looks like DNF to me.
No action, little suspense, a lot of information I do not care about.
From here on I will FF, only skim passages.
Does not get more interesting, at 25%, most skimmed, I think is book is not about a crime, but a crime itself. Nearly bored me to death.
Skimmed the last few chapters to see how it ends, as usual no important person killed (some hurt a little). Big yawn.

Read blurb from next book and gave that back to KU unread.
The third might be more for me, being about some state taking over your computer, but I will try to decide fast wether it is worth reading.

DNF. Not recommended, what others see in this boring writing I will never understand.
Have to change my way to decide which book to get, I am doing something wrong, my last choices where too often really bad.

I just finished listening to The Vanishing Wife and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I wanted to whack Mason in the head a few times. If the cops decided he was the guy who did it. Mason did everything he could do to make himself look guilty as hell. That's what I remember thinking in the beginning anyway. I LOVED Marcie. She's a total bad a$$! When I grow up, I want to be just like her (I'm 36 lol). But I am happy that this series is based on her. I didn't realize that when I first picked up the book. And the narration is in a male voice. So it didn't occur to me until I noticed it on the cover a few chapters in. I was so glad when I saw that. Not that Mason is a bad guy. Everyone should want a guy like Mason. I wish I married a guy like Mason. He just doesn't scream the main character of a kick-ass series, ya know? Am I interested in reading book 2? Most definitely, or even better, listen to it while I'm getting things done around the house. This book definitely will keep you interested.

This is a typical thriller where the characters make unwise and illogical decisions that will obviously get them into trouble and danger. Then, of course, they contrive to miraculously overcome the bad guys and all is well in the end. It's not very realistic, but it's certainly exciting.

Trevvor Finlay's narration is surprisingly well done, although he reads a bit too slowly.

Note: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A note about Author's Direct: It's required that this review copy be read using the Author's Direct app. This is a very poor app for listening to audiobooks. It needs to implement a book scrubber to skip back/forward in 15 to 30 second intervals over the entire book, not by percentage in just a single chapter. It made the listening experience unpleasant and frustrating.

Really enjoyable.
I enjoyed reading this book from front to back. The creative story is well told and kept my attention throughout. Exciting, action, thriller. The story captured me from the first page and the story moved from scene to scene flawlessly. There are a couple of editing issues and some literary faux pas, but these small flaws are almost invisible if you get wrapped up with the characters, as I did. Sometimes the descriptions were needlessly detailed, but being Canadian, I appreciated the familiar sights in Ottawa. The descriptions of places like Florida meant little to me. The exciting ending helped close the story, filling in all gaps that were intentionally dotted throughout the book.

Mason wakes up to discover that his wife Samantha has, vanished! . Mason is a mild mannered accountant by day, living the quiet life in Florida, and stays that way throughout the danger and intrigue that he finds himself caught up in. Although pushed out of his comfort zone in his quest to find out what happened, he continues to search with the help of his wife's quirky friend Marcie. Together, they travel to Canada and unravel the mysteries surrounding Sami's disappearance. There are no dull moments in this fast paced book , with humour. Loved.

I enjoyed the narration of Trevor Finlay

Mason knew the basic information on his wife, parents deceased and didn’t care for the stepfather, and no other siblings. She had been gone two hours and no messages, he left one for her. Now saying her voice box is full.
Her friend Marcie, said a few days ago she seemed worried about something. Stepfather, also The Force putting pressure on her for the secrets she knew. Stealing away to keep her family safe. Her family and friends would not let it be, the Hunt was on. By keeping secrets was a dangerous game, they were now forced to deal with. Unusual riveting plot, and well done.

Audiobook: In this story, Barry Finlay has written about a man who wakes up one morning to find his wife gone, with no message or clue as to where she went. The reader gets a real sense of the main character in the opening pages of the book. The action in this tale builds slowly, but the ending is surprising and explosive. I recommend this book to others who like this genre. Trevor Finlay's narration is good and adds a layer of entertainment to the story. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Enjoyed

This book was an amazing mystery. Marci and Mason did a great job of digging up clues to solve the mystery of where and why Sami disappeared. There are so many twists, turns and surprises that it keeps the pages turning. The great characters help make the story interesting and entertaining. Mason an unassuming man made an amazing hero. The story keeps the reader in suspense to the very end. Thankfully all ends well with a happy ending.

A man wakes up and his wife is no longer in bed with him. No note, nothing, she's gone. He doesn't have any idea as to where to start looking for her and above all he can't imagine why she left him.
An excellent thriller to keep you up late reading, to find out how it ends

A mild-mannered accountant is pulled into danger when he begins looking for his wife who disappeared while he slept on their anniversary. Both US and Canadian police forces are involved in the crimes he exposed. I rate this a 4.5. Easy to read. Wimpy husband turns into a lion.
