I found this at my local public library while looking for more of Nikki McClure's artwork. This is a collection of ten stories from various indigenous cultures (six from North America) that relate to wetlands. It was produced by the Washington State Department of Ecology, compiled and edited by Jana Dean, and illustrated with paper cuttings by Nikki McClure. The introduction provides storytelling tips for using the tales in classroom settings for environmental education. Each tale is followed by information about the animals, plants, etc featured in the story and their importance to wetland ecosystems. It concludes with further resources (providing addresses and phone numbers for information that might hopefully now be online). Overall, an interesting collection of stories, some of which I was already familiar with in some form, as such stories change in the retelling. The need for wetlands preservation is even more urgent than when this was published, so all such resources are welcome. And obviously, I love the paper cutting artwork.
