Yet another issue of C'est Bon Anthology, which nowadays is a traditional anthology every other issue and a hardcover monograph every other issue. This is the latest anthology issue, on the theme of romance.
The contributions are of course varied in quality, or rather, I should say that I appreciate them more or less, in that some are just too experimental for my taste. I like stories, that's what I'm looking for, and comics that veeres too much towards visual art often leaves me cold.
But there is much to like in this issue, like Daria Bogdanska's comic New Rose, an evocative love story with a twist, or Valentine Gallardo's strange and beautiful I Fly so Low. The real pièce de résistance is the short and silent story Everyday Love Letter by Anna Åhlén, though. If ever there was a Swedish comics artist of whom I'm expecting great things, it's Åhlén. Someone please give her a contract for a series of graphic novels, now!
All-in-all, it feels like C'est Bon Anthology has had a revival. Both the design and the content feels fresh and interesting. Also, all except one of the contributors in this issue are women, which is a nice departure from many other, male-dominated comics anthologies out there.
