Ever since watching a search and rescue team find his lost sister, Keaton Goodwin has worked and trained to become a SAR handler. He raises the perfect dogs to work with him, and he loves his job. When he's called to take his dog, Kaiser, to Bogota, Colombia after a devastating earthquake, Keaton heads out not sure what he'll find.

And what he doesn't expect to find is Master Sergeant Nodin Standing Bear.

Nodin's squad has been sent by the Army to help keep the SAR teams safe during the search and rescue part of the operation. He's done a lot of this kind of work during his twenty-three years of service, yet there's something different about Keaton, and Nodin knows a disaster area isn't the best place to start a relationship.

When Keaton disappears, Nodin has to face how much he really cares about the younger man. Will the emotions they feel amongst the rubble be enough of a foundation to build a future?

I really enjoyed it and wish it was longer. I would really love another book to see how they're working everything out...

A guy who as an emergency rescue dog is called to Colombia to help search for survivors after an earthquake. He's assigned a military protection unit and promptly starts hitting it off with the leader of the unit. He gets sidetracked when captured by cartel members to find the bosses kids. I enjoyed the part about the dogs but thought it moved pretty close to install insta-love territory.

I came away from this book with mixed feelings. The writing is good and it gives us a nice look into search and rescue. Keaton was a wonderfully drawn character and I loved his dedication to SAR and his dogs. But I felt there was a bit too much packed into the plot for the length, and I found that there were some aspects that I really would have liked to see explored more in depth.

Keaton’s passion for his job and his love of dogs just leaps off the page. I really liked him and thought he was wonderfully fleshed out. I had an inkling that something bad was going to happen to him while he was in Colombia, because the drug cartels were mentioned repeatedly. So it wasn’t a surprise when he was taken. I really liked the confidence with which he handled himself, and it was absolutely in keeping with his character that he would assist even under those circumstances. I really liked the consistency of his character throughout the story.

We don’t get to know Nodin as well, but what we do see is that he’s a kindhearted and hardworking man who takes his job seriously. He comes from a long line of military men, and I loved seeing the pride he had for his country. I wish we could have gotten to know him just a little better, though, as he felt just a tiny bit flat at times.
