Who or What is The Battered Butterfly? What do you get if you cross Mike Hammer with Ignatius Reilly? Meet Lefty Markowitz! Lefty, an ex-New York cop turned professional gambler, is two hundred and eighty pounds of misanthropy on the prowl in Manila. All he wants is to be left alone. But when a bar girl is murdered Lefty becomes the prime suspect, and everyone is after him. Pursued by Chinese triads, Japanese Yakuza, a Filipino sparrow squad, a corrupt senator and his bodyguards, an overeager reporter, and a psychotic police captain, Lefty must find the real killer before his pursuers find him. Aided by his girlfriend Hyacinth Chin and her protégé, Gladiola Laboong, Lefty explores the places the Bureau of Tourism leaves off its maps. He’ll look for the killer, but all he really wants to find is a decent slice of pizza.

When his 8th grade teacher asked the class what the wanted to be when they grew up, Jake said: "A 16-year old dropout!" He was the first in his class to live the dream.

Since then he has clerked for a law office, operated computers, delivered pizzas, worked his way up from driver to night manager at a taxi company, played blackjack professionally, edited magazines, worked in a boiler room, managed a video store, played more blackjack, worked in movies, managed a casino, did some international consulting, and currently is director of an IT company in Singapore.

Jake has written two books and approximately three hundred articles on backgammon, a game he used to play pretty well when he had the time. He has also written four screenplays, one of which was filmed (Ring of Fire, starring Don the Dragon Wilson).

A few years ago he set out to write a love story set in Korea, but wound up with a hard-boiled mystery set in Manila. It happens.
