The first book of The Journal Trilogy, Cracked Earth, was a not-so-shocking success, and made the Best Sellers list in just six weeks. Book Two, Ash Fall, continues the survival saga of Allexa Smeth and the town of Moose Creek.
While the rest of the nation has begun the slow process of recovering from the devastating earthquakes of months earlier, the small town of Moose Creek is still suffering.
The food bank and soup kitchen Allexa Smeth helped established to feed her community have closed, but the community rallies and finds ways to feed themselves, leaving Allexa the luxury of taking care of just her small family. Hope is on the horizon, but still out of reach.
Attacked by a vicious few who would take her family’s most precious resource, Allexa Smeth fights back with her very being to protect her own, but it’s only the beginning of what’s to come.
More earthquakes rock the nation and the perplexing sudden apathy of the town shocks Allexa into withdrawal when she realizes they are no longer heeding her warnings.
The lasting darkness they are plunged into doesn’t have anything to do with a light switch.
Okay, I love me my super volcanoes! Yes, I am a bit of a volcano nerd, having lived next to Mt. St. Helens when it erupted in 1980. I survived (I even had a t-shirt that said so!), and my life long fascination with volcanic eruptions started.
Even for those who aren't volcano nerds, this book is a very enjoyable apocalyptic read. It is the second book in a series, and I am now going straight to book #3, as I need to know what is going to happen! Book one dealt mainly with an earthquake that caused a power grid failure. This book starts with our characters still recovering from this event, while earthquakes continue to plague areas all over the world.
But then the biggie hits! The Yellowstone Caldera erupts. If you don't know what the Yellowstone Caldera is, I encourage you to look it up. It is real, and it could be a doozy! Super volcano mayhem, and the ash cloud circles the globe!
I enjoy the fact that these books are written in a first person narrative, both with narration by the main character, a prepper woman, and also with journal entries from her diary. It is nice to see her thinking, her mind set, and her reaction to how everyone else deals with the events that are happening.
This review is for all four books in this series. Deborah Moore has done a superb job of wordcrafting these fine books. I got into the characters and the situations immediately and had a thoroughly great time joining in this adventure. The main character, Alexia, is so well developed and so strong a woman, that I appreciated so much the plots and sub plots that were developed around her. I hated to see the book come to a conclusion although it was a comfortable and fulfilling conclusion. I was so glad I found this series after the four books were written. I hate having to remember a book a year down the road to be able to appreciate the next one. I hope that Ms Moore does write an additional volume. One thing I wish I knew clearer - What age is Alexia ? Keep up the good work. I highly recommend this book series to everyone who likes a very well written story.
