A thin line separates life from death, freedom from oppression. One misstep. One wrong choice.

When Cricket Black is purposely exposed to Bad Sam, she must fight New Caelum’s stranglehold on its citizens’ freedom or succumb to the hopelessness of the lethal virus. A dear friend’s death at the hands of New Caelum forces Cricket on a path to confront her past, which holds the secret to a permanent cure but also opens old wounds over the loss of her parents.

Sending the devastating Samael Strain virus into the outlying communities lands New Caelum on the verge of war with the western settlements. Inside the city, growing tension between the lower classes and New Caelum’s elite rulers puts the city on edge and creates a growing divide between Vice-President Westlin Layne and his mother, President Ginger Layne.

With death, chaos, and revolution surrounding them, will West and Cricket have to sacrifice their love for each other to bring a peaceful resolution to the wars that rage inside and outside the city?

Heather Sunseri was raised on a tiny farm in the smallest of towns in thoroughbred horse country near Lexington, Kentucky. After high school, she attended Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, and later graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in accounting. Always torn between a passion for fantasy and a mind for the rational, it only made sense to combine her career in accounting with a novel-writing dream.

Heather now lives in a different small town on the other side of Lexington with her two children, and her husband, Mike, the biggest Oregon Duck fan in the universe. When she’s not writing or working as a CPA, she spends her time tormenting her daughter’s cat, Olivia, and loving on her son’s Golden Retriever, Jenny. MINDSPEAK is her first published novel.

Move over Hunger Games and Divergent... Emerge series is here. Heather Sunseri writes suspenseful young adult that keeps you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. Uprising is a young adult scifi that keeps you turning the pages for more. I loved the way the story goes back and forth between Cricket and West. There are plenty of surprises in this story and you will want to read the whole series. If you like this genre, don't miss this series!

Emerge by Heather Sunseri introduces us to a world nearly decimated by the frightening Bad Sam virus. The recent Ebola outbreak is a reminder of how realistic Sunseri’s vision of the world could be. Uprising continues the story of Cricket and West. Bad Sam is back and threatening the way of life both inside and outside the walls of New Caelum. Once you start reading Uprising, you will find yourself cheering on Cricket and West while completely immersed in the surprises that are literally around every corner. Heather Sunseri once again shares her unique talent for creating a suspenseful plot that is driven by compelling characters, medical drama, and political intrigue.

This was a well written sequel to emerge. I really enjoyed that even though it picked up from where the first book concluded, the flashbacks were not excessively rewritten but you'd still get the gist of what previously happened. I especially liked that cricket was strong-willed, resourceful, an independent thinker, brave and selfless. I even found myself silently cheering them on as she and west approached the new caelum leaders at the gala. I would've liked to have seen the look on annalise's face when she saw cricket then. It would've been epic.

More complications, more action

The city of New Caelum has a lot of citizens tired of the elites treating them with disdain & punishing them for the slightest infraction. And they seem to outnumber the elites. They want a change, & so do many of the elites.
Cricket learns a lot of new things about her parents, the city, the man who has become a father figure since he took her from New Caelum when she got Bad Sam.
General Jackson, the iron-fosted dictator of 6 Southern settlements, has made his presence known. He is a cruel, inhumane man, vicious, violent, & is as likely to harm an alky as to harm a foe.
With tanks & a large number of people from the settlements outside the walls of New Caelum, some of the elite show their true stripes & things get very dicey for Cricket & West & their allies.
Cricket & some of her friends get to know exactly how harsh & cruel the general can be.
There is an uprising...outside & inside. Who will win & wjat will ensue?

Picking up where the first left off, this second book of the Emerge series is another well done, exciting book. Once again, I read it in one day (during the day instead of the middle of the night this time), only putting it down when I had to (since things like feeding and educating my kids do take priority over reading for pleasure). The struggle within Cricket between her brain and her heart is very realistic and well written. I highly recommend Uprising to young adult and dystopian fans (but definitely read Emerge first!).

This series one of the best!

I have been captured by the characters in this story. I care so much about them. I can see them, feel them, feel their happiness, joy and pain. Cricket, aka Christina Black and her love West are so right for each other and for their world's and the world to come.
I can't wait for the third book in the series, Renaissance.
Heather Sunseri has become one of my all-time favorite authors. Keep them coming, please!

I really like the way the author keeps you engaged and following the story while still keeping you guessing. I also appreciate the growth of the charcters. even when the characters do something that would have been out of character pages before, you can see the steps that it took them to change their position. I never felt like the characters simply shifted the way they were to fit in a story line.

Amazing story!

I couldn't get enough of this book. I love the characters and the story line. It is amazing how the author twists the story line just when you think you may have an idea of what is going to happen. I felt like I shared every emotion the characters experienced because they were so well developed. I enjoyed each and every character in this book. This book is like riding a roller coaster!

Sometimes the Sequels are Better

I bought this book after receiving the first one in hopes i would read it and leave a review. I did and gave it only 3 stars. The sequel definitely earned an additional star! It ended abruptly in a promise of a better world but the struggle and all the conflicts along the way to get there was well worth my time in reading it. Now on to Book 3 in hopes it's as 5 star as all the In Darkness series are to me.

The Bad Sam epidemic has been stopped, but the city still holds the virus over the outside world. More politics and layers of the story emerge. I like the intrigue but the romance is a bot over the top. It feels like this book could have ended the series so I am interested to see where it goes in book three.

Another amazing book!

This book picks up right after the first one and builds on all the momentum already gained. The book walks the line between fiction and reality really well even though it is written about an apocalyptic future. Love the complexity of the characters and the relationships they develop.

Fantastic!!!

This series is great! Characters are so believable and the story is a great one. The first book was good, this one started slow but caught up quickly. I LOVE that Sunseri didn't feel the need to retell the stories from the first book.

Quick read, good continuation

Easily continues the story, not enough detail to really envision the closed off city. Characters are strong, not clear where story in going from n book 3

Great book!

This one was even better than the first one if that’s even possible. I don’t know how many times I went “wait, what?” during this book when something unexpected happened.
I love that. So good and definitely worth the read!

Stepping towards the Future for all!

This second book leaves you needing to dive into book three! So many unanswered questions! How? When? Can? Will Good finally conquer the Evil that exists? What does the Future look like for all of humanity?

I read this in two days. Excellent continuation of Emerge. I could easily stop here, the story has a nice conclusion, but I'm invested in these characters and can't wait to read more. On to book 3!

A good read

A good book that culminates the Emerge trilogy by Heather Sunseri. I enjoyed all three books in the series and highly recommend them all.
