When William Burke was hanged in Edinburgh for mass murder in 1829, his accomplice, William Hare, was set free after turning king's evidence against his partner-in-crime. Against the backdrop of the American Civil War, their search leads them closer to the killer and into the heart of a desperate plot that could threaten the very future of the United States itself.

Journalist Peter Ranscombe delved into The Scotsman newspaper's archive for the inspiration behind his first novel, "Hare", which takes the story of Burke and Hare - Scotland's most notorious murderers - and asks what happened to Hare after Burke was hanged for their crimes. Peter's story places Hare in Boston during the American Civil War, when he falls under suspicion once more.

Kind of a lot going on in this book. Decent action, a little far-fetched but entertaining. I give it 3 1/2 stars.
