Black Cat #30

The Question

Rate this book
Questions exist all around us. How do we feel about upcoming elections. How do we feel about moving in together. But sometimes questions seem open to interpretation ...

The Question is the thirtieth entry in the Salem Massachusetts Mini Mystery series. The start of this series is The Lucky Cat. These short stories are being written and loaded one a day from October 1 through October 31, 2014. All author's proceeds from this series benefit battered women's shelters.

Lisa has lived in scenic Massachusetts since 1986, with only two brief forays out of state. One of Lisa’s ancestors was Ann Foster, who died during the Salem Witch Trials. Ann Foster was a grandmother by that time and sacrificed herself to protect her daughter and granddaughter. Ann had been born in England, came over in 1635, and was 75 by the time of the trials. Salem reached its dark depths during those trials from 1692-1693 - but since then has healed, blossomed, and shines. It now features the amazing Peabody Essex Museum, a plethora of gorgeous historic architecture, and a beautiful coastline. It's well worth a visit. If you can't go in person, take a virtual trip through Lisa's first-hand descriptions!

This is my least favorite. I think it's really far fetched. On the other hand, since it is kind of a existentialist question I can see that some people would love it.

The mysterious note

Sorry but can say I liked this one at all.
Things are hotting up. Halloween is tomorrow and she and Lenny are deciding what to do today. Their musing is interrupted by Zoe asking her to meet with her at the exhibition. When she arrives she finds Zoe in a flap. Leaving the house that morning she had taken George's jacket by mistake and found the start of a note. Now she's panicking thinking that George wants to move in. To put her mind at rest she offers to do a bit of sleuthing. George however only states that he found the note and others follow in that belief. So who did leave the note? What is that person asking for?

Kathy and Lenny are looking forward to a quiet movie night in.

But between robot pollsters and Zoe needing help, the two decide to go their separate ways for the evening.

Again, the Calder exhibit at the Peabody Essex…Zoe is convinced that George wants her to move in with him; Kathy lays the seeds of doubt.

It’s all due to the mysterious “Could I” note, written on the ladybug card.

George, Jyoti, Heloise, Joe…the card moved hands an awful lot…

Cool resolution; cute.

Only one more book left…

A movie and Lenny

While cuddling on the couch, getting ready to watch a movie, Kathy receives a call from Zoe, asking her to meet her.

With a goodbye to Lenny, she saunters out of her apartment and down to where Zoe is. After a few minutes of talking, Zoe pulls out a card that simply says. 'Could I.' Zoe tells her that it was in her boyfriends coat, and believes that it was a note intended for her, that her boyfriend was going to ask her to move in with him. But Kathy isn't convinced so she decides to investigate.

Incredibly Zen

This story reminded me somewhat of a Zen koan in its sweetness and simplicity; not so much a mystery as a story of interconnectedness and forgiveness. The best story so far.
