Prior review: I love this title So. Much.
By way of full disclosure, I never actually made any of the recipes in this cookbook; the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich and other Southern (and mostly high-fat and/or high-sugar) recipes really aren't my thing. However, this book holds a place of honor in our family lore as The Best White Elephant Gift Ever. My husband and I bought it with great delight as soon as we saw the title, and it made the rounds at his company Christmas party white elephant gift exchanges for about three years running, until someone decided they wanted to keep it permanently. We never saw it again. Killjoy.
The song references and pictures throughout the book are immaculate.
The burger recipe is good. The wedding cake recipe would be a very nice challenge!
Not sure if the recipes are super authentic, but they seem legit and like something the king himself definitely would've eaten and liked. I think the stalker fan aka the author did a decent job in finding out what Elvis ate.
My Mother bought me this book excellent cookbook of Elvis Presley a.k.a The King of Rock & Roll. Since my mom knows that I've been wanting to perfect my cooking skills. So when she saw this book in the store she thought of me and knew how much I love classic rock. She decided to buy it for me. I am so glad that my Mother did because I totally love the cool pictures of young Elvis Presley, in his films & his famous wedding. Also great recipes of his favorite southern dishes.
I definitely enjoyed this cookbook and preparing these recipes. So have my family. I am still working on trying to do all of them but I must admit that some have really easy to prepare & done it well, but other recipes has not gone to well with me. Still doing my best to perfect my cooking skills. This is the first cookbook of Brenda Arlene Butler that I've read and I really enjoyed. The meals were fun to make and some of them with witty names. From her writing I could see she is a huge Elvis fan and has done him a lovely homage of his favorite meals/foods. She has definitely did it from her heart & devotion of the King.
I would recommend this cookbook to anyone. You will definitely enjoy it and have fun preparing the meals. Also learn some of Elvis fun facts, filled with lovely pictures of him. Its worth your time. I rate this cookbook with 2 thumbs up.
In this 1992 decidedly "niche" publication, Brenda Arlene Butler has compiled some 50+ recipes that comprise the sort of southern fare of which Elvis Presley was reportedly so very fond. I recently snapped this up for a friend's birthday present, and know that she'll enjoy concocting some of the items included here--possibly even The six-tiered Royal Wedding Cake that accompanied the 5/1/1967 wedding of Elvis and Priscilla.
This book is written with humor (e.g., the chapter on vegetable recipes is titled "Vegetables--Yes,the King Ate Vegetables"), is well illustrated, and the cooking instructions are clear. One learns here that "Elvis' taste seldom departed far from Southern-style home cooking, but he was willing to try a new dish if the main ingredient was familiar" (p. 31). While our Elvis was by no means a food adventurer, I'm reasonably confident many readers will find something here for which they share an affinity.
This book earned its fourth star in my estimation by including a recipe for "Summer Ambrosia" (p. 53), reportedly one of Gladys' occasional go-tos on a hot Mississippi summer day. Enjoy!
This is a must have for any Elvis fan. The cookbook gives us some of Elvis's favorite recipes including one of his favorite sandwiches, 'Fried Peanut Butter And Banana Sandwich'.
I am going to have to try that recipe some day. I like Peanut Butter...I like Bananas...maybe I'll like this or maybe I won't.
This book also gives the details of Elvis and Priscilla's Wedding Cake. There are the details of how the cake was structured, down to the ingredients used to make the cake, frosting, and edible decorations.
The King ate like a commoner. Second, if your intention of reading a book is to find recipes that will be kind to your blood lipid profile, this one is not for you. Grease coupled with sugar, salt, and more grease. From biscuits and red-eye gravy to fried chicken and meatloaf, the author puts out Elvis' favorites. While I enjoy much of the same food, I, for other reasons, do not eat like this except for a few times a year. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the read and was entertained and amused by every recipe. A big plus are the photographs of the food (presentations are good) and, of course, Elvis. Like reading a work on anthropology, one does not have to savor the cuisine to enjoy the book.
I bought this as Nigella Lawson mentioned it in one of her programmes many years ago(I can't remember which though!),and really this is novelty purchase, as my family are vegetarians, and there is quite a lot of meat recipes, though the Sweet Potato Pie will be tried out. There is a recipe to make a replica of Elvis and Priscilla's wedding cake, which takes up the last half dozen pages in the book, which is really for historical interest only, unless you are a professional baker. Hardcore Elvis fans will love it.
i bought this for dan for christmas. haven't made anything from it but man.....it's just like the best ever....i mean....where else are you gonna find directions on how to make the king's wedding cake???
The book that introduced me to the joys of fried pickles, plus I'm pretty sure this is where I got my Cherry Coke barbecue sauce recipe so it gets an extra star just for that!
