Revival: by Stephen King | Summary & Analysis

Rate this book
by Stephen King | Summary & Analysis by Book*Sense

This is a Summary & Analysis of Revival . It follows Jacobs from his early calling as a rural Methodist minister in Maine through his eventual end as an elderly, enfeebled, mad scientist. Stephen King’s Revival is an excellent book, one that bears out the high status King enjoys among writers of popular fiction and which substantiates the works of scholars who attend to his writing. There is much to enjoy in the novel, and it serves as an easy entrance into his corpus for those new to it.

Much of the novel is set in rural Maine. Jaime does travel a fair bit, so there are substantial scenes across the US, including Tulsa, Oklahoma; Colorado; upstate New York and Hawaii. Each contributes to a sense of the American heartland, pointing to perceived United States essentialism and thus reinforcing the horror of the novel.

I love S. King and think I have read almost all he has ever written. I get excited when I hear of a new book and was sad when a few years back I believe, he had said he didn't think he was going to continue writing. I think though, as I thought then, that he can't help himself but to write. His imagination is wild and (this is obviously just my opinion but one well informed I believe)when he lets it free he can't not write the story. So I was happy when this book came out and got it for a Christmas gift. I immediately (well not the same day) sat down to read it expecting the usual wild, imaginative, scary and sometimes horrifying story line and the lineup of wonderful, awful, instructive and fully written characters. However, I was somewhat disappointed and have to say, while I am glad to have read the book, it wasn't up to what I have come to believe his usual standards are. It was a little slow getting started and I put it down several times before completing this (meaning put aside to read something else, not gobbling up the book as fast as I can)book.
That said, I still enjoyed most of the read, just not as much as many of his other books. Then, even the best sometimes have books that sometimes may miss the mark a little...that happens when they usually set the bar so high.
So, if you are a King fan, by all means read this. If you haven't read him, which is probably not many on this site anyway, this isn't the book to start on.

Obviously, I'm a huge Stephen King fan.
I feel, however, very let down by the ending of this book.
I think old Steve just ran out of steam here. Either that, or he's been watching too many episodes of "Ancient Aliens".
Come on Steve, this was a shitty ending. You can do better than that!

I didn't expect the denouement of one of the main characters to play out as it did, but the story held my interest and had some of the famous plot twists, although I didn't see as much of the macabre humor usually employed by Mr. King. All this having been said, good book!

This is an exceptionally interesting book. Stephen King has a great imagination. I would count this among his best.
