Rate this book

I am a Reader in the Philosophy of Religion, teaching courses on Islam, Nietzsche, Greek philosophy, and philosophy of religion. I am particularly interested in the interaction between western philosophy and the religious claims made by Islam, which align with my view that philosophy and religion are intertwined.

An interesting and beautiful book by Roy Jackson, who evaluates the issue of the interreligious clash of civilizations from the Nietzschean point of view, following the footsteps of current influences and events.......... Deciphering the issue of the interreligious clash of civilizations from the Nietzschean point of view.

Jackson tried to deal with Islam both in Nietzsche's words when describing his interpretation of Islam and with a more accurate approach from the point of view of Nietzsche...

He brought a lot of philosophical discussions with him, of course. At the beginning of these, why did Nietzsche take such a positive approach to Islam while taking such a stance against Christianity? he discussed a fundamental question such as.

Of course, when we compare Islam and Christianity in the conditions of the period in which Nietzsche lived, Islam provides an original and new perspective on his views on religion and shows that his philosophy can also make an important contribution to what are considered the key paradigms of Islam. Also, Nietzsche's direct godly view is being kept alive today by different currents within Islam. Of course, this is not a one-to-one quote, but it would be more correct to say comments that are very close to each other.

It is a very beautiful work and, as a society that does not read, it may be a good book to introduce Nietzsche to the people of our country, but it has not yet been published in Turkish.

This book has a very interesting subject that I've only seen tangentially discussed elsewhere (the book
The New Orientalists: Postmodern Representations of Islam from Foucault to Baudrillard comes to mind). It seemed promising on the condition that the ratings are ignored. Sadly, the ratings are deserved.
The subject of the book is handled extremely clumsily. There's a lot of emphasis at the start about how 9/11 gives the book extra weight and how Said's Orientalism should be kept in mind. Yet the author seemingly ignores it. Or rather he ignores the most obvious aspect of it which is homogenizing the Orient, which even opponents of Said who demonize or romanticize the Orient can object to. There is a lot that could be discussed about Nietzsche's relation to Islam, mainly through the perspectives of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and of Orientalism forming a view of Islam that is more life affirming than Christianity. Yet confusingly enough, the author spends more time analyzing each separately and thinking he is bringing them closer together by presenting a certain interpretation of them. He doesn't. And his individual analysis are clumsy as well. The strategy of bringing Nietzsche closer to Islam is to first reconcile him with Christianity. Not that that is necessarily impossible, but it's unusual for when writing about the guy who literally called himself the Antichrist. Paul is presented as the source of all that Nietzsche finds wrong in Christianity. As an example of someone who aimed to reconcile Nietzsche's attack against organized religion influenced by Paul on the one hand and Christian faith on the other, one eccentric Lutheran priest is brought up. He happens to have been an opponent of the Nazi regime. I am sure that among the Nazis there were a lot more people who were fans of both Nietzsche and Christianity and tried to reconcile them. Yet the author ignores this because he obviously wants to save Nietzsche's reputation and present him in what he sees as the best light, and this is just one example of where he does this. Analysis of Islam is no better, and again, the best word to describe it is clumsy. It is not always clear when he is talking about something inherent in Islam, when he is generalizing and when he is talking about a specific group of people or a specific space and time. Even when he tries to bring nuance he screws up, like when he mentions the distinction between Sunnis and Shias only to say that Shias believe there were 12 imams, ignoring all Shias who are not Twelvers. Not to mention that there are Muslims who are neither Sunnis nor Shias. And how is Islam interpreted to bring it closer to Nietzsche? The author decided that the best way to do so was to spend a lot of time talking about Islam's relation to politics, despite the fact that Nietzsche's views on politics were never clear and that he has been appropriated by anarchists and totalitarians, by the left and the right. Arguably Islam can be interpreted in different ways as well, but then you don't go into specifics like the author does who seemingly thinks only his interpretation is the correct one. And even this political analysis is handled, again, clumsily. Neoplatonic influence on Islamic philosophy is presented as liberal. That's how much of joke this book is.
It is an awful book, I would not recommend it, the only good thing about it is that it makes me look forward to other works on the same subject matter that are undoubtedly going to be better.
