Things I found to be true about all three books I read: simplistic writing, stilted dialogue, names used too frequently to be natural, frequent drastic and disruptive shifts in POV (I don't think the author actually payed any attention to POV consistency), schmaltziness, cheesy language used during sex scenes, and men tend toward action while girls primarily agonize over love/sex. Lastly, none of the books stand on their own. They are closer to long serial installments than books in a series.

I thought this was an OK read. Really that's about it. As I noted above the writing seemed simplistic and stilted, but not that much more than many other books I've read.

Unfortunately, I found the main character, which I THINK was Melinda (and honestly, shouldn't that be something I can be sure of) annoying. Her entire personality seems to be guilt, self-doubt and intrusive sexual thoughts.

I also thought her history inconsistent. She's supposed to have been a recluse for four years, but she's emotionally distraught because of a bad date and sexual experience. What recluse goes on dates? Where'd she even meet a guy to invite her out? She also acts like she doesn't know anyone on the island because she's been in the house for 4 years. But what about the previous 17 years she lived there? She doesn't know anyone but the sheriff from that time?

The book ended when what I thought of as a side character finally made a decision about a relationship. It felt very secondary to the plot and like a random place to end the book. It's not a cliffhanger exactly, more like just a place to break one continuous story, which is what I sense this series is.

It's not wholly without attractions. The idea of a magical island is an interesting one. The characters, though shallowly written, were engaging. There was some occasional humor. Maybe this is just a matter of taste. If you like schmaltzy books with a sort of (I think unintentional) innocence to them (like a virgin trying to talk dirty) this could be right up your alley.

A promising book series

I just finished the first book in this series. Quite enchanting story, is all about supernatural creatures, from Witches to werewolf, vampires and Hags.
The story start with the four main character, Melinda and her brothers Michael and Charlie, not to forget William the Vampire. There are all guardians of Demon isle a small town with lot's of power. But something is happening with all four of them, and it will be not good.

I must say I have enjoyed the storyline and characters, but conversation wise a bit short on information there is always something missing, the monologues are fun to read, special that Melinda has a crush on William. There is a lot going on in this town but with not much insight, bit chaos.
Would have loved more information on the people there living in Demon Isle more conversations around the town, with more details because lots of plots and no closure only that they found out how there parents died.
I will now start book two and see how it takes it's curse.

For the first time in my 48 years life, a book series written by a single author has left me daze an confused.....

I honestly at this point have no idea in what order these books are to be read as they are published under different series, with different titles, and I saw only assume different orders as this is particular book is listed in the title as book #1.... But alas in the series list on Goodreads its not even listed. The closest one to it listed as #23. I can no longer find it on Amazon where I purchased the book under freebies as they are currently u available.

Dazed and confused... Please help 🙏 me!!!!

It seems like it will be a pretty good series if I could only figure out where to start.

Quick read - okay story. It felt like it was the beginning of a serial novel than an actual first book. Still interesting enough that I would read the next installment.

In Short: Melinda (local witch) and her brothers (empath/ death reader and a shifter ) are tasked with protecting the isle's magic source. Vampire William, a family friend, gives aide to the struggling siblings. Sister is a bit of a basket case. Since her parents' death she's become a hermit and is now prone to panic attacks. One of the brothers, Michael, is ready to take off and leave this life behind. Charlie, the eldest, is contending with his shifter abilities. They have been mostly dormant until recently. Now it seems the Howard family has their hands full as a body is discovered with a possible link to the death of their folks AND sweet Emily's death makes an appearance in Melinda's dream.

This book left me utterly unimpressed. I feel like the writer was just trying to achieve too much. Some parts were super raunchy which is great for a steamy romance, but then the kids (which is how they act) are into the fray again. It wasn't smooth. It was... awkward at best. And not the fun, entertaining awkward either. The themes, genres and target audience all seemed to be jumbled together. I felt like if they picked one and went with it, the story could be much better. I won't be picking up anymore in this series.

I enjoyed this book and I'm going on to the second in the series.

+4 stars because:

* Creative premise. A magical island full of vampires, ghosts, sea hags, witches, warewolves, and who knows what else? Yes! A family of witches tasked with protecting the island? Even better. A vampire that is tasked with watching over the witches for generations? Intriguing!
* Likable characters. Even though I feel like there could be some more character building, I find the characters likable enough. I feel like they have real life issues, like Melinda's anxiety, and that makes them relatable.
* The reading was easy but not so simplistic that it made my brain fall out. The writer doesn't seem to have an issue of overusing descriptives.

-1 star because:

* The POV changes, although I like the style, seemed convenient rather than logical.
* There are a few typos and grammatical errors. specifically, I noticed that the author could use some focus on making sure to start a new paragraph for a new character's action, even if it's only one sentence.

A nice quick read and introduction to the world, it was a little uncomfortable reading a different POV each paragraph but once i got into the swing of it i got used to it, I loved how all paranormal things happened and existed on this touristy island, I also enjoyed the story that was starting to unravel...

The characters are a little one dimensional, but i feel this book was trying to spread too little butter on too big a slice resulting in it being a little thin and tasteless in parts.....

I could see the potential slowly building near the end,but felt it wrapped up quickly.... Some really interesting parts, but still waiting to be blown away.

I'm not sure how to review this book. I spent the entire time I read it editing the work and cringing at some of the author's word choices and the choppiness of the book itself. The premise is interesting, and I like the cover. I'm sorry, but I think that's about all I can say on this one. I'm curious enough to find out where this series will go, but mainly because of the cliffhanger ending.

COYER: Read a book with a cartoonish cover. (1 point)

Exciting Read

Where to start, the Howard’s are a magical family living on a magical island called The Demon Isle. There are two brothers and a sister plus a friendly vampire, who helps them out with solving mysteries, problems, or solutions. This book was so action packed, I couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed every single character, even the bad ones. I can’t wait to read more of this amazing series. Great writing.

I absolutely loved this book! The family lived on a magically fortified island that their family had been protecting for a long line of witches. Along with a vampire that was a family friend. Many POV's in this story so you can keep up with everyone in the story as it goes along. Can't wait to read number two, to see the rest of the family have their happy endings.

The cover drew me in first but the storyline kept me there. I loved the characters. Who wouldn't love them? Witches, werewolves, spirit vessels, sea hags and more. This island is just hopping with paranormals. This is the perfect introductory book to the series. I can't wait to read more about the Howard witches and their friends!

The series is bewitching

Having read the series before it was separated I am rereading the adult version and find it just as fascinating. The characters are crisp, sarcastic, enticing and dangerous. I enjoy reading this author and can't wait to see what the rest of this series offers.

now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.

The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.

i would highly recommend this author and this book.

Awesome

This is an awesome first book to the series and yet still a self-contained story. Three siblings that are on Demon Isle, meant to protect the Isle.
Very entertaining to read.

I wanted to read more

A good story but I wanted more so that made the author's intention a success. An island of supernatural beings fighting their human feelings. Not at times and plenty of adventures

I actually quite enjoyed this story for a quick read. I can understand why some readers were bothered by the constant point of view changes between multiple characters, however I have read a few authors that do this luckily so I was able to catch on quite quickly.
I did really like the characters and their different struggles. I am glad Michael figured out what he wanted to do and got a happy ending.
My favourite bit was probably the death viewing for Catherine. How many books do you read, or films do you watch where dangerous potions are being thrown about? These things fight monsters, spirits and demons. So what would happen if you dropped one? Nothing I have seen has ever had such an accident. In this book we actually found out, so it was good to see that characters were not perfect and indestructible.
Definitely looking forward to reading more.

Generally my standards of quality is fairly low, I'm a big consumer of trashy flicks after all. Which has me rather conflicted about this one because I kind of love the scenario but the writing is.. bad. It felt very flat, and was rather stilted. Like it felt like a teenagers first foray into writing.

But I adored the scenario/world building enough that I kind of wish the author would rewrite it once they grow as a writer.

First off I must say I vote this book's title the messiest ever! The title
Paranormal mix of witches, vampires, werewolves etc. with lots of sex and innuendo. Okay, but though I got the first of the series free on Amazon it was an introduction cliffhanger that requires you to buy the next two books of the series. I don't see me buying the rest of the series because it just didn't strike enough of a resounding chord for me; just have too many other books in my tbr pile.

This book was nice and easy to get into. The perspective changes were choppy at first but easy enough to get used to. There was a good balance of magic and mystery as a starter in introducing and setting up future plots and characters. It's a good set up for the series and I'd definitely dip into more of them.

O.k.

Needs some editing. I was not find of the characters and couldn't get behind them. When you don't become invested in the story it doesn't hold your interest and the flaws you would overlook in a story you are enjoying become a nuisance in one you aren't. Won't read the next one because I don't care what happens.

Not a fan. The title implies it is the first book of a series however it felt like I jumped right into the middle of a story line. Very, very disjointed and there were several spelling and grammatical errors. It was difficult to keep track of the characters and what they were doing.

Wouldn't recommend this one. Sorry.

I don't like books in a series that don't wrap up in one book without warning. This is part 1 of a serial instead of Book 1 in a series. The author switches POV so often & so quickly that it's crazy to follow who you're reading about at any point in time. And just not a fan of the story so probably won't make it through the rest of the books to figure out the end of the story.

A definite short story. This book does exactly what it should. It teases just enough to bring you back for more. The storyline sends interesting enough, but it does jump from character to character.

Decent book with funny characters. The plot got confusing at times as the authors had three different yet connected story arcs. I do look forward to seeing how the storylines play out.

Gotta love a good witchy read.

This book sucked me right in and before I knew it, it was over. I adored the family atmosphere that these 3 kids have. Facing what they face they stay realistic. This will definitely make you want to keep reading the series

This was a short book but it seemed longer as if the author chose words and sentences that did a good job of portraying ideas. The characters were okay and the story was okay but nothing astounding or overly amazing. This was another free book and I intend to continue with the series.
