Detective Judd Hanna leaves Tulsa, Oklahoma after the death of his partner and ends up in Wyoming. There he manages to save the life of a toddler and her mother. Charlotte "Charlie" Franklin is grateful to the gorgeous stranger. When her brother, Wade needs a temporary deputy, Judd finds a good excuse to hang around.

It was a nice little romance with a side story about who abducted the mayor. I never figured out how Charlie was in mortal danger though so the synopsis was misleading in my opinion. The only real danger was the beginning.

Sharon Sala generally writes romantic suspense but this one, while it involved a cop and a mystery, didn't really qualify since the mystery was a side element and the heroine was not involved and the hero really only peripherally. But this was a nice romance even though the hero and heroine did not spend a whole lot of time together and their relationship happened pretty fast.

Where the book really shone was in the scenes where the hero, Judd, interacts with the toddler, Rachel. Those scenes were really worth reading the whole book.

Easy to spot the crime here, and the "criminal". the crime is almost secondary to the tall cop who is driving by and helps save a little cherub from an angry bull. Said cop is stuck because between the fence and the bull, his car is no longer able to take him on his way.

Avoiding emotional entanglements is a default position for Judd Hanna, the product of abuse and abandonment at the hands of his parents. When he meets the little girl and her pretty mom, Charlotte, he finally no longer has that excuse to fall back on. The pair gets under his skin while he helps solve the crime.

He realizes that he needs to heal before he can stay around Call City, so he does. That takes some spirit and some courage, but he is up to it.

heart Touching Wonderfully Writen

I loved this one from start to finish very hard to put down.
It touches your heart makes you say aww and fall in in love and believe that's things really happen for a reason.
A must read a book that will leave you feeling wonderful from the inside out.

In the back of his mind he never got rid of the abuse of his father until he was in a little town in the Wyoming high country, he found something more. A woman that made him dream for the first time in years.

Loved it!

I highly recommend this book. The characters are wonderfully written, even the one you dislike. This is a story about rich versus poor, child abuse, alcoholism, rape and revenge. One of the best Sala books I have read.

Judd Hanna was at a crossroads. His partner on the Tulsa police force was killed just 3 days before retirement. He took a bullet mean for Judd. Judd is out of control and is ordered to see the police psychiatrist before being allowed to return to work. He leaves Tulsa and finds himself in Call City Wyoming. He saves a little girl from a bull but his car was badly damaged in the process. He is offered a room in the family home where Charlotte, known to her friends as "Charlie" lives with her 2 year old daughter Rachael and her brother Wade. Wade is the chief of police in this small town and he is unsure of Judd at first but then he learns that he rescued his niece Rachel from the bull and can nothing else but offer him a room while the car is being fixed. Wade gets a perplexing case and he enlists Judd's help to solve the case as his only other deputy is going on his honeymoon. As the story progresses Rachael captures Judd's heart with her baby giggles and her antics. The scenes between Rachael and Judd are so sweet and tender. We come to learn about Judd's past and now he has to find a way to break free so he can be free to love Charlie and Rachel without his past demons coming to interrupt his present. Has Judd finally found "A Place to Call Home"?

Another in the Men in Blue series in which detective Judd Hanna has had it with his job in Tulsa when his partner dies from a bullet meant for Judd. He decides to take off for places unknown and when he ends up in Wyoming, he finds himself attracted to a young woman, Charlotte, and her small daughter. Trouble is, someone seems to be out to do them harm, something he can't abide. While trying to figure out what he wants to do, Charlotte's brother offers Judd a volunteer job helping him solve a puzzling kidnapping that doesn't make sense. After all, no ransom is demanded and the victim is found--naked--on the steps of the town library with a brand on one hip but otherwise unhurt. Who did it and why? Judd is determined to find out even as he puzzles out what he's going to do about Charlotte and his feelings for her.

The tension tightens throughout the story until an ending worthy of both tears and smiles.

This was a reread for me. I enjoyed the book the first time as well as this time.

The book was rather dated as it was released in 2000. However, in one instance, Wade went outside with the portable phone and came in and tossed the cell on the table. A little editing problem here. Obviously cell phones were available, so why did not the author put them in the story, especially for cops?

I wish there was an epilogue. But the reader is left to assume that Judd gets a job with Wade and lives with Charlie, Rachel, and Wade at the ranch. It would have been nice to let Wade have a book. Also, I would have liked to know the final outcome with Raymond.

But, as I said, the book was an enjoyable read.

When I read about the crime committed in this novel, I wondered what in the world was going on in Sharon Sala's head!!! I did like the atmosphere the author created for the small town of Call City, Wyoming where everyone knew everyone else. I liked the goodness I saw in the characters, even in those who had hurt others and had the strength to try to make amends. I liked the expressions of atonement toward God that Judd finally made. I liked the triumph of good over evil, especially when the author was working with a man's inner fiber. This book was a good read and was well-written.

10 years to meet my demons

This book makes me happy that I made my child go to consulting at a early end of a bad situation instead of saying forget it, I said "learn from it and go on with your life, it's the last now" . Someone should have done that to me and saved me 9 years selfhate.

I love the character developments in this story. From the first page to the next, and subsequently, to the end, both the leads changed their belief. They put the dark past behind and embraced the future with big smiles. I guess this is what it is like to live. Why? Because life goes on whether or not you want it. Therefore, we should enjoy it while we can, just like I enjoy this story. :)
