Entrepreneurship is the dream of many individuals across the world. The idea of owning a business and being their own boss makes some people thrilled and enthusiastic. Unfortunately starting a business and sustaining it for a long time is not easy, entrepreneurs need to be prepared for losses, obstacles, legislation, local needs, among others. Often these daunting challenges discourage and even prevent people from starting their own businesses. What if there was a handy guide to help one start a business, a book that would break down the steps to start a business from blueprint to launch, and provide information about launching corporations, growing and expanding businesses, setting up LLCs, marketing, etc.? That would be wonderful, right?
The dummies guide to starting your own business by Arthur Hanson does exactly that. The compact 84-page volume is a step-by-step guide to launch, grow, and run your first company with no previous experience. Divided into seven easy to read chapters, The Dummies Guide addresses all aspects of entrepreneurship right from understanding the entrepreneurial mindset; overcoming fear and self-doubt; Crafting a vision, goal setting, identifying opportunities, choosing the right business model, branding, marketing, systems, scaling and expanding, etc. There is a short section on selling your business too.
In the introduction Hanson explains how and why he chose to give up working for a corporation and start his own business. “I enjoyed my work to some extent, but I wanted more and felt like I could do more,” writes the author explaining motivations behind entrepreneurship emphatically declaring: “Never once have I looked back. Starting my own business changed everything.”
Hanson writes about the mindset of a successful entrepreneur starting off with a quotation: “Your business will grow only as much as you do.” Successful characteristics of entrepreneurs are listed in this chapter, such as “entrepreneurs see and solve problems;” “entrepreneurs are resilient;” among others. In my opinion the most important part of this chapter is the section on “Overcoming Fear & Self Doubt,” in which Hanson explains how to identify and overcome mental blocks that keep us from venturing out into the world of entrepreneurship.
The dummies guide to starting your own business is full of action items after each chapter, it is full of valuable information on goal setting, people management entrepreneurship, networking, etc. A list of references at the end of the book provides resources for those seriously thinking of stepping out of their comfort zones and becoming entrepreneurs. These resources are peer reviewed and provide valuable information.
