With over 162 Million individuals pledging their support, Rally for Rivers is the largest ecological movement in the world to date. In the fall of 2019, Sadhguru launched Cauvery Calling, a uniquely modelled project that focuses on enhancing farmer wealth while simultaneously impacting river flow and riverine ecosystems. When we say “Shiva,” there are two fundamental aspects that we are referring to. The word “Shiva” means literally, “that which is not.” Today, modern science is proving to us that everything comes from nothing and goes back to nothing. The basis of existence and the fundamental quality of the cosmos is vast nothingness. The galaxies are just a small happening – a sprinkling. The rest is all vast empty space, which is referred to as Shiva. That is the womb from which everything is born, and that is the oblivion into which everything is sucked back. Everything comes from Shiva and goes back to Shiva.
So, Shiva is described as a non-being, not as a being. Shiva is not described as light, but as darkness. Humanity has gone about eulogizing light only because of the nature of the visual apparatus that they carry. Otherwise, the only thing that is always is darkness. Light is a limited happening in the sense that any source of light – whether a light bulb or the sun – will eventually lose its ability to give out light. Light is not eternal. It is always a limited possibility because it happens and it ends. Darkness is a much bigger possibility than light. Nothing needs to burn, it is always there – it is eternal. Darkness is everywhere. It is the only thing that is all pervading.
"Shiva: Ultimate Outlaw” is a short read that attempts to introduce Lord Shiva through the lens of mysticism, as interpreted by Sadhguru. However, as someone who has spent a fair amount of time engaging with spiritual literature and dharmic philosophy, I found this book underwhelming and overly simplistic.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way: this is not really a book. It feels more like a transcript of a talk given by Sadhguru - lightly edited and repackaged into a small PDF or booklet format. There’s no narrative depth, no structured exploration of Shiva’s many dimensions - be it as Adiyogi, Mahakaal, or Bhairava. Instead, we get a few loosely strung together reflections and philosophical one-liners, many of which are already freely available across Sadhguru’s videos on YouTube.
That said, for absolute beginners, especially those who have never encountered Shiva beyond pop mythology or pop culture, this might serve as a soft entry point. It plants a seed of curiosity. But for anyone looking for depth, history, symbolism, or the esoteric dimensions of Shaivism, this book simply does not deliver.
It reads more like an attempt to cash in on Sadhguru’s popularity than a serious spiritual or intellectual offering. As someone who deeply respects the vastness of Sanatan Dharma and the rich traditions surrounding Lord Shiva, I expected more substance.
Skip if you're already familiar with Sadhguru's teachings or if you're looking for a serious exploration of Shiva. Recommended only for beginners who are encountering these ideas for the first time.
This is a beautiful book from Isha Foundation that explores Shiva as the Swayambhu, Adiyogi and AdiGuru who teaches his seven disciples the philosophy of 'Yoga' or union with nothingness. One of these seven was Agastya Muni who brought Yoga to south India. The book highlights the importance of Kailash, Manasarovar, Velliangiri, Kanyakumari, Kashi, Kedarnath and Kantisarovar as places which reverberate Shiva's energy. The book also explains the symbolism of Shiva's adornments - The Moon, Third Eye, Snake, Trishul and Nandi. Finally the book says that breaking the laws of physical nature is spiritual process and in this sense Shiva is the Ultimate Outlaw
An outstanding book to know Shiva from a totally different perspective. The way yogis know him, he is the adi guru means the first guru ever. This books also explains the meaning and importance of different adornments of Shiva. One would also come to know the scientific aspect of indian culture and the practices which are followed in a traditional Indian homes are not just like that, they are taught by the yogis and inculcated in this culture by their efforts and teachings. Please read and be inspired to know more. There are so many things to know in this world.
The book is an amazing illustration of Shiva, whom we consider lord or divine.Actually, he's a yogi possessing divinity. The book takes you to the mystical world of Shiva and the significance of this ornaments and accessories. An amazing illustration of thoughts, followed by well-researched theme.
It makes you understand the true meaning of divinity beneath intoxication. The book has really opened up my imagination. Amazing work..!
Uncover the mysticism of Lord Shiva in the short book, ‘Shiva-Ultimate Outlaw’ by Jaggi Vasudev. It is a short commentary consisting of parts like Shiva’s Presence, the Adornments of Shiva, and the Outlaw that is Shiva. It was extremely interesting to read about how the Anandamide was named. This book in no way can fulfill all your dharmic longings, but it sure is a great companion to the start of a spiritual journey. Har Mahadev!
Sadhguru is brilliant at articulating the concept of Shiva. This is one of those books which capture the simplicity and depth of Shiva at once. It fed my curiosity.
I am a kind of reader who wants the maximum out of a book. And THIS book, just in few 50 pages, it left me with immense knowledge, through each and every line.
I think if u r reading this particular book u must be somehow wants to know what life is n how to imbibe it.... It can give u a direction by making u understand how a yogi does it...
Great book if you want to know about Shiva. The various story of Ganesha, Kanyakumari, 112 tantras etc are very amusing to study. One can get lost in the book and finish reading in no time.
What a great interpretation.... How beautifully everything is linked with science and facts... Sadhguru is absolutely great... as always with his delivery, humor and winning hearts.
Wow ! Never knew there's so much behind one word - Shiva ! Truly enlightening to know about Shiva's presence and the meaning of each of His adornments. Lord Shiva to me, won't the same anymore.
An interesting view of Shiva as an outlaw, another dimension to the most enigmatic of all deities. The myth of Velliangiri forced me to think of a general pattern human societies have followed across time and space. Devine forces reside on top of mountain. Climbing mountain make them exhaust them physically, calming their mind to a contemplative state. The panoramic view from atop opens up an awe on the wonder that is nature forcing a feeling of oneness.
An ultimate eye opening book. It gives you a direction of how to be still, meditative though you are surrounded with number of things that disturbs you. Looking at all life situations blissfully, being receptive of all the things and above all to forget your "self" is explained quite well by Sadhguru. Om Namah Shivay!!
This book is seriously eye-opening! It's like your guide to finding inner peace, even when there's a ton of stuff stressing you out. Sadhguru breaks down how to stay chill and meditate, even in the midst of chaos.
He's got some great wisdom on facing life with a blissful mindset, staying open to everything, and, most importantly, letting go of that "self."
A beautiful introduction to Lord Shiva, featuring a particularly captivating section on Shiva’s adornments. It offers profound insights into the perception of life we should aspire to, illustrates how meditation should ideally be, using the example of Nandi, and presents many perspectives that make sense and resonate deeply.
There could have been some more information in the book. But since this is only 55 pages, you won't find much content if that's what you're looking for. Anyways a nice read. Looking forward to read Inner Engineering and other books by Sadhguru
Am done with Sadhguru ,he used to be good . This one has too much logical lapses like how did 7 rishis survived over 84 years of waiting, how is energy stored in mountains by dead human beings is it battery or in electrostatic or electromagnetic form or something else. May be i need to go another dimension to find answers!!!! Bad book, too many issues.
