Money. Power. Sex.

The trifecta every man strives for and very few attain. I had these things and walked away from the endless stream of women, from the family fortune, from everything. It was all mine in a life long forgotten. The past can't stay buried forever and hiding mine from Sidney is getting harder. I'm not the guy she thinks, and if she knows the truth I risk losing her.

The thing is, I feel those old ways pulling me back, and if Sidney is part of my life she has to know. If she doesn't it could destroy us both.

The truth won't set me free. No matter what my name is, I'll always be a Ferro. But Sidney has a choice and I won't steal it from her.

I have to say right now I'm disappointed. I have very much been looking forward to this novella series because Peter is my favorite character. I realize that the author almost always writes in the POV of the heroine and it is about whichever Ferro is included. I was just expecting more I think. I realize this is only book 1 and it was action filled, but just not quite what I was expecting. Well there is 9 more to go so we'll see how this continues on. Enjoy

So I'm attempting to read the Ferro Books in the order the author recommended. It is an extremely difficult task. What I can tell you is that Arrangement, Damaged & Proposition really meld together so well. It is a juicy tale of drama that is fun to read. Stripped is a part of the books but not tied in a lot, just minimally, but you need to read them. The Trystan Scott series books 1-5 really don't connect all that much except to give Trystan's character a back story. It is not super important to the Ferro's but they were a fun read and entertaining. They enhance his character but not completely necessary. I recommend them but if you are time crunched you're good. The Scandalous books are pointless. One person in our book club read them and they had NOTHING to do with the Ferro's. Finally the Wedding Contract, although it is about Nick Ferro it really doesn't tie into the Ferro's story. It is a breakaway book that if it wasn't Nick Ferro would just be a great story. So again if you are time crunched it is not a necessary book. So far reading them in order is difficult but entertaining.

I loved the first two books in HM Ward’s Damaged series. The third book was disappointing, but I still loved Peter Ferro. (He’s by far my favorite Ferro. 😍🥰) When the Life Before Damaged series came out, I was apprehensive to read them. Sidney is the perfect match for Peter, so why would I want to read about him and his girlfriend before Sidney? Basically it boils down to the fact that I just want more Peter!

I don’t mind how these books are set up. They’re short and you can read them in one sitting. But I can see how they might have frustrated me if I had read them before they were all released. The fact that they’re in KU is a huge plus because I wouldn’t buy each story separately. There’s no conclusion to each novella and they all just roll over into the next. Therefore, I don’t really know how to rate each one.

These are Gina’s journals that Peter finds in a box when he and Sidney move to their new house. He wants Sidney to read them so she can get to know the “old” Pete Ferro. But the story isn’t told in a journal format. It’s like we’re actually experiencing everything that happened between Pete and Gina from Gina’s POV. In this initial story, we learn how Pete and Gina initially meet. Gina throws a rave at one of her father’s abandoned warehouses and things get out of hand. Pete is the one who rescues her and that’s kind of it for this short story.

Now it’s on to the next installment to find out what happens next.

Life Before Damaged Volume 1
***A Ferro Family Serial by H.M.Ward***
Prequel to Damaged 1&2 by H.M.Ward

(((ARC Review)))
Spoiler Free!

Thanks to Holly Ward for the chance to read the ARC for Life before Damaged volume 1!

I was first introduced to Peter Ferro (aka Peter Granz) in Damaged. Peter was my first Ferro crush and continues to set the bar for any and all Ferro’s after him…and there are plenty of them ;)

This was the perfect way to go about writing Peter’s destructive story before Sidney (his current fiancé in Damaged). Us readers get to see how the past Peter wasn’t quite the endearing, caring Peter we all grew to love in Damaged. This volume just shows us glimpses of who Peter was before Sidney and how much of a bad boy he really was… Ahem…sex against the wall at the rave with some redhead… ;)

It starts out in present time with Peter and Sidney together and Peter has found Gina’s journals that she kept from when they were together. “Your past is different. You didn’t willingly, knowingly do bad things. I did. If you’re going to marry me, if you want to truly be with me and understand my shadows, my faults, and help me from slipping back into the man I was, you need to read these.” (Peter talking to Sidney about the journals). Then the book slips into Peter’s past life from Gina’s POV through her journals.

There were LOL moments, sexy moments and still that touch of mystery that always surrounds the Ferro family. Holly did not disappoint with this first volume to Peter’s past. I can’t wait to see how the rest of his and Gina’s story unfolds (even knowing the tragic outcome from reading Damaged) and to learn how Gina helped Peter form into a better man. This is a story about how two people are brought into each other’s lives by fate and how they affect each other in a positive way.

The Ferro sex appeal runs strong in all these men. Peter Ferro is no stranger to what the charisma he possesses can do to an unsuspecting female.

In this story, we get the view of Peter's fated love - Gina Granz. Having found her journals as he is finally settling in with his soon to be wife, Sydney, Peter decides it is time to come clean with her. Perhaps reading Gina's journals will give Sydney a view of his other side. He feels like this dark side of him is buried deep inside him now, but would rather Sydney know this is part of who he is.

Gina is such a good girl. I mean she listens to her parents, is always doing what is expected of her, and never straying to do anything that could be in any way compromising. One night, just one night, is all it takes to derail her life. Her friend Erin concocts a plan for a private, elite party and everything goes downhill from there.

The sexual appeal that is Ferro is unmistakeable. The heat between our two main characters scorches the pages as we are left panting for more.

As he quotes the words of the English poet Yeats:

"When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars."

Ferro is trying to convince Gina to live her life. "It's a reminder not to waste your youth. Don't let yourself get hung up on what's right or wrong. Let yourself be desired, even if it isn't true love. Life is too short..." This series is not to be missed!

I received an advanced review copy from the author for a honest review.

Hmmm... For me, it's really hard to read and enjoy a book when I already know the future of the characters. However, I thought I would give Peter's pre-damaged story a shot.

I found it odd that Peter would assume Gina's journals would be all about him. And what woman would even want to read their former flames' personal thoughts? So right from the start I didn't like how this story would be told.

As I read, I loved all the witty one liners!! There are some really great lines!! I was surprised that I really liked Gina. She was so different than the image I created in my own mind. As I continued reading, I felt this was more like Gina's story rather than Peters. Which made this story personal and confirmed my earlier thoughts of reading another woman's journal.

As the story continued to unfold, I longed for more dialogue and more exposure to Peter. Too much time was spent on her being in the storage room and her being lost in her own thoughts.

The ending I wasn't too surprised by. However, all is never what it seems in one of Ms. Ward's books. So I'm left to wonder what crazy weave will volume two present????

Overall, I think once a characters' story has played out, it should continue to move forward. But this is only my preference, and there are many other fans out there. If you love learning more about a character regardless of their place in time, just realize this is more getting Gina's experience with Peter versus his own story.

Lastly, what is up with the time references?? They didn't even make sense to me?? Another mystery maybe??

****UPDATED REVIEW AFTER READING IT TWICE***

Wow I just loved it!!!

This books has everything any women could possibly want to read. It has Mystery, Fire(pun intended), Its Sexy, Has every woman’s fantasy all in one mini novel.

For one HOLY PETE!!!!

He's amazingly intimidating, knows how to speak his way to get anything he wants even into a women panties! Panties drop just by looking and even imagining those striking blue eyes, chiseled face, dirty blonde hard and broad toned muscular body.

Poor Gina doesn’t stand a chance.

Gina poor girl is stuck in the 60's with a nun attitude, who needs a Ferro to show her that any girl has a naughty side that desperately needs to be freed from its cage. Glad she tried to give it a go when takes a chance at breaking a small rule to go on a night out with her bestie Erin.

last but not least

HOLY PETER FERRO!!

I'm in love *Sigh*

you've done it again Holly Ward, you make the most amazing short series that leaves us asking for more! :) I can't wait for more! Lol

Your the best and keep them coming!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It had been awhile since I read Damaged. In fact, it was the first HM Ward book I ever read. This has a whole new Pete Ferro (Granz). Told from the view point of Gina, it introduces us to the sexpot Peter was in his early years. I always try to keep my reviews spoiler free, so I'll tell you there's a little suspense (although the reader knows ultimately what happens). It's done in a way that keeps the reader interested and turning the page. The descriptions Ward uses in this book for Peter are H-O-T! Quite possibly the hottest in all her books if you ask me. He's attractive, powerful, a little manipulative and intelligent. What woman wouldn't fall for a man like that?? And the cliffhanger at the end? Holly has shown in the Arrangement series that she can keep you on edge for the next installment. This book certainly does that. I think I'm more excited for LBD2 than I am for AR18!

Regina Granz & Peter Ferro

"Ah... Love. I see where you may be confused. I wasn't Offering to make love to you. I offered to fuck you.Thoroughly and hard. Sex isn´t love. Don´t ever make the mistake of confising the two. Sex is powerful, physical thing. Once you start mixing in stupid notions of love, it kills the passion"

"ah, but you're not Little miss perfect. You did break the rules. You were at an illegal party tonight, when you could have chosen to be anywhere else. See? Rules are meant to be broken, Gina even the ones we hold onto the most. Learn to let go. Your lofe is too short to spend it holding back all the time"

If i'd met the poet he's hiding inside that beautiful head, I would have fallen for him a long time ago. He0s worth breaking up with Anthony. He's worth the risk, the heartache everything - just to know him a little bir better. to be held in those arms for one night. I can't say no and realize I don't want to stop, But I have to.

Peter Ferro is my favorite Ferro so I was super excited about this book. Peter wants Sidney to know all of him, including his ugly past. In this first book in the Life Before Damaged series, Peter gives Sidney the journals he found when unpacking. These aren't just any journals, they belonged to Gina, and are an in-depth look into who Peter was in his past. Who he fears is still just below the surface. Peter loves Sydney so much that he needs her to know everything before their wedding.

I loved getting to look into the early years of Peter. This book just scratches the surface of his past. We get to see what kind of person Gina is and how she has an affect on Peter from day one. I can't wait for more in Life Before Damaged 2.

Funny, sexy and mysterious. Life Before Damaged is an exceptional read! The way Gina sees Peter interact for the first time is so hysterical. There are so many Gina moments that make her unique and I can see why Peter loved her. No spoilers...you need to enjoy this journey like I did. Prequels can be tricky. But not Holly Ward's! This woman is the queen of all Ferro. How effortlessly she writes; I felt like I was there watching from the sidelines while reading. Life Before Damaged is seriously OUTSTANDING! This is a must read. You won't be disappointed. I <3 Peter

Yummy is all I have to say to this... Though I will say more. This is a great prequel to Damaged 1&2. If you fell in love with Peter from Damaged 1&2 then you will love this just as much. I'm not going to spoil anything but if you read Damaged 1&2 you know this about Peter before he met Sidney and it's about him and Gina. Mr. Peter Ferro is just as hot as Mr. Peter Granz so hold on ladies you will want more after reading volume 1. Another great H.M. Ward book

I finished reading this book today. O MY BEJESUS H.M. Ward is one amazing story teller with her writing skills. The characters and their story just leaves you enthralled and gasping with the emotions that they bring out in you.

H.M. Ward has left you on a very thin edge of a cliff hanger. I am soooooo looking forward to reading the next part of Pete Ferro's story.

Good story my dear H.M . Ward
“Tell me no more of minds embracing minds,
And hearts exchang’d for hearts;
That spirits meet, as winds do winds,
And mix their subt’lest parts;
That two unbodied essences may kiss,
And then like Angels, twist and feel one Bliss.

I was that silly thing that once was wrought
To practice this thin love;

Come, I will undeceive thee, they that tread
Those vain aerial ways
Are like young heirs and alchemists misled
To waste their wealth and days,
For searching thus to be forever rich,
They only find a med’cine for the itch.”

I Don’t Know What I Think

It’s truly weird reading this after Peter and Sidney’s story. A part of me feels he cheating on Sidney even though there is no Sidney at this point and I’m afraid, when I get to the end, I’m going to hate that Gina died. It’s a conundrum. The Peter in this book is so different than the Peter we met in Damaged. Much more serious. I don’t see similarities in Gina to Sidney except for the sexual uptightness. Can’t wait to continue.

Life Before Damaged by H.M. Ward is a new series and prequel of sorts to her widely popular Damaged story about the infamous playboy and sexaholic Pete Ferro turned English Professor Peter Granz, that we first meet in Damaged. When we meet Peter in Damaged, he’s completely changed his life from what the world knows him to be and he’s in hiding. He’s living a quiet life, working as an English Professor and he eventually falls in love with one of his students, Sydney. As their love story unfolds and secrets are revealed, we slowly learn that Peter is actually better known as Pete, one of the infamous Ferro brothers and more specifically, the one that has gone MIA. Although Damaged is a great NA series about love and redemption, we never really get the whole back story as to what lead up to why he decided to leave his old life behind and why, specifically, he decided to take the last name of a girl he was in love with, to pay homage to her and thus Life Before Damaged was born.

So just to clear all my dribble up, Life Before Damaged is about the younger Pete Ferro, Gina Granz and the circumstances leading up to his current incarnation of Peter Granz, College Professor and fiancé to Sydney.

This first volume to the new series starts with Peter going through some old boxes in the house that he shares with Sydney, only to find some journals written by Gina about her life with Pete Ferro. He decides that if he is to embrace this new version of himself and have a real chance with Sydney, he needs to come clean about his past. Even though she knows somethings about his past, there’s nothing like reading about it from someone who lived it. So he asks her to read the journals and so begins our history lesson on the man, the myth named Pete Ferro.

The entire story from then on is told as sort of a diary/journal entry of sorts. It’s not really told like some books I've read where it really feels like you’re reading someone’s diary/journal, it more just has chapter titles with dates and times, then proceeds to read more like a normal story from one POV. Although, I must say, at times it does get a bit wordy on the descriptions (which I don’t think normal people do when they do journal entries?) but like I said, it is supposed to be a journal, so it is from Gina's POV, so maybe she likes to describe every little thing? Other than that, it’s still a good start to the story. This first volume is mainly focused on world building and backstory filling while trying to set up the next volumes to come although in classic H.M. Ward fashion, she's already setting up the secrets, twists, turns and yes, cliffhangers!

One thing H.M. Ward is fabulous at is setting up secrets, it’s the only way I can say it. If you’ve read her, you know what I mean. If you haven’t, I just don’t know how to explain it. Sometimes it’s with a look or a twist in the story and you are blindsided with a 2x4 as reader but then when you think back on it, you’re like, damn why didn’t I see that and she definitely doesn’t disappoint in this story. Pete is being a typical Ferro until he is put directly in Gina’s path and you think it’s just happenstance but when you finish the book you’re thinking to yourself.......was it really?

It’s a great start to what promises to be another great Ferro tale and one her fans have been dying to know!

1st of all, let me say, here we go again with H M Ward mini series, I do love her stories, but when it take me less than hour to read and keep paying almost $3 a book , is kinda irritating, look at it this way, Ms. Ward "The Arrangement series" so far there are about 17 books and everyone of those books take less than half an hour to read, she really knows how to milk the cow, wink* wink* (Which by the way, no one is twisting my arms to make me buy them) so here come Ms Ward new series call "Life before Damaged" , if you haven't read the original series "Damaged", you should before you read "Life before Damaged"..Getting back to new series of Ms.Ward, I always thought that after I was done reading the original series Damaged, that at least one of the Ferro brothers is finally got his happy ever after...Specially after everything that Peter and Sidney been through...BUT NO!!!! Peter found Gina's journals (She an X girlfriend) and for some reason he wants Sidney to read them ahhhhh OK so here we go, he feel that after she done reading his evil way, well not evil, but a very, very bad boy before they met, that she would leave him, blah, blah, blah..At this point, I am thinking, who the hell want to read a journals from an X...But if she doesn't,then they be no story to tell and no cows to milk :-)..So far the plot of the story line is Gina story and how she met Peter and Gina begin stuck in a closet while a fire raging around her and Peter trying to get into her panties...The story itself so far was ok, nothing really to talk with friends, and like always this series of H M Ward were short, nothing new there but me spending my money for a short story line that really didn't gave me shit :-)

Let me just start by saying I think we need these for all the Ferro men. Life before they were the men they are now. Let's be honest they would be insanely interesting and eye opening. All the Ferro men have a back story that led them to be who they are and I think we all need to hear them! Anyway, Peter's story starts out very interesting. The first night he meets Gina. The story is actually Gina's journals that Peter has found. Sydney is reading them because Peter doesn't want to keep secrets from her. Honesty is always a good place to start since they are engaged. I am curious to see where this story will go and how Sydney will react to it. Will it end up being to much for her? What could Peter be so afraid of?

I am glad we get the chance to know Gina. She seems like a good person so far. Someone who lives life by the rule book, a good girl. The night her friend convinces her to have a rave at one of her Dad's warehouses ends very badly for her. The events of the night lead to her needing to leave the scene so her Dad doesn't know she was involved. Who comes to the rescue? None other then Peter Ferro. Needless to say, the night has taken a very eventful turn. Peter is a hot sex god and Gina is drawn to him. She has a boyfriend she loves but, their sex life is very vanilla. She can only imagine what sex with Peter would be like. Could she go through with it if she had the chance?

Such an eye opening volume. I can only imagine what will happen to get to the present. I will be looking forward to the next installment!

I think I may be in the minority club here, but, while I very much enjoyed Damaged 1 & 2 with Peter & Syndey, I was a little bored with Peter. He wasn't that crazy, sexy as hell, alpha male like Sean, which I find so freaking sexy...but in Life Before Damaged, wooo weeee....Peter was HOT!!! I absolutely loved his cocky,I don't give a crap attitude!! I mean, I read these books because I want that guy that is so sexy & out of control but still capable of protecting & loving the right woman...but I do very much enjoy the fun parts leading up to a happy ever after. In most books, I wish there was more of the drawn out bad boy stuff. Lol.
I loved this story, loved the idea of using Gina's diaries to tell the story. I think it was an amazing twist to tell it from her point of view not just Peter or Sydney's. This story is not much different from Holly's other Ferro books, meaning there is angst, sexy drawn out desire, turns you don't expect, obvious secrets, and of course, such a cliffhanger!! Wth Peter, you had Gina right where you, and me, wanted her!!! I like GIna, I think I expected to not like her, but even though she seems like a goody goody, I think there is fire just under that surface, and man,I can't wait to see what she has in store. I am loving the way Holly has chosen to give the back story about Peter. Another reason I adore her writing & her stories!! Loved this story, can't wait for #2, thank you Holly, for another awesome start to a series!!

Life Before Damaged starts out in Peter’s perspective. He’s worried who he was, who he still is will chase her away, but being amazing Peter, he wants Sidney to know anyway. So taking out Gina’s journals he gives them to her and waits for her decision.

Gina’s journals start with a rave, and her first encounter of Peter. Honestly it’s so freaking hilarious. I swear I don’t know where Mrs. Ward gets this stuff but man on man that scene was fantastic. Gina is a complete sweetheart and I can see how Peter fell for her. She’s sweet, loyal, and pure in almost every way. Although she lacks the ability to let go and have fun she’s an adorable character to read about.

I don’t want to ruin things I’m just going to say Peter isn’t the Peter we know in Damaged…totally. He’s still poetic, intelligent, and completely sexy. However, he is also an ubber playboy and flirt. Honestly I love this Peter who isn’t as damaged as he in when we first meet him in Damaged. He still also has the hero thing working for him in all three books, which earns him extra hot points.

Gina is a good girl and Peter is a definite bad boy. While I do know how this ends I am definitely going to enjoy reading about life before Damaged with Peter and Gina.

I received an ARC of Life Before Damaged for an honest review.

When I found out that I got approved for an ARC of the first installment of Life Before Damaged, I was super excited! Though it initially took me a while to become invested in his story, Peter quickly became my favorite Ferro by far, and I couldn't wait to read more about him.

It quickly became clear to me that Life Before Damaged was going to be very different from Damaged. For one thing, it is told from Gina, Peter's dead fiance's, perspective, and she is very different from Sidney. Also, it's about the way Peter used to be, and he was also very different from what we're used to. In some ways, it was almost hard to read, seeing my beloved Peter acting so much more like his brothers. But at the same time, it definitely sparked my curiosity. I'm dying to see how Peter evolved from who he is in this series to who he is in Damaged.

I can't say that a ton really happens in this installment, though there are some really good moments. I can't decide how I feel about Gina yet. It was a little bit predictable, and the ending was something I've seen before, but overall, it was a good start, and I look forward to reading more!

Life for Peter and Sidney has not been easy. Now that they are starting their new life….there are many things that Peter would like to leave behind. While going through old boxes, Peter discovers journal that Gina had written about their life together. With his past still hanging over his head, Peter decides to lay everything out to Sidney. Knowing that the truth could possibly destroy their relationship, Peter still offers the journals to Sidney. So begins the story of an unknown Peter through the eyes of his former love……

This spin off of the Damaged series is basically a glimpse of life from Peter’s past. The journal entries are actually written in a way that is sounds like you are reading about a POV written from Gina’s perspective. It is a bit wordy to have been a journal entry. Something that makes you pause when you first begin. The descriptions and details give an in depth start to the latest Ferro serial. As always, fans can expect twists, turns, and a cliff hanger ending. An interesting start to the secrets that Peter has kept hidden.
