Rate this book
Contemporary Romance featuring a forty-four year old hairy chested firefighter hero and a thirty-one year old school teacher heroine whose one night stand on New Year's Eve becomes much more...

Seven years ago, the once overweight Jessica Mulligan made a pact with her best friend that ended up changing her life for the better. Now sixty pounds lighter, Jessica’s self-confidence has soared, but her longtime firefighter crush still won’t notice her.

What she doesn’t count on is catching the eye of his boss, the much older and handsome Captain Douglass Finley, who thinks she’s perfect in so many ways…

Three years ago, Doug Finley’s life took a turn for the worse when his wife admitted to an affair with their next door neighbor. Other than the possibility of a promotion to Deputy Fire Commissioner, the only thing he looks forward to is weekends with his eleven-year-old daughter. With his forty-fifth birthday around the corner, his love life is in the toilet. The ritzy New Year’s Eve bash he has been roped into feels like torture, until he spies a vision of beauty eating chocolate covered strawberries like she’s making love to them…and all he can think about is making love to her.

When Jessica admits she never had an orgasm, he’s determined to give her the ultimate New Year’s fantasy she’ll never forget.

But can he convince her they belong together for longer than one night?

This was a cute short story about a woman, Jessica, who has had weight issues in her past and spent most of her life crushing on her best friend's brother. The brother had no use for her. She thinks it is all because of her weight. I'm not so sure, but either way, she is pining for a man doesn't want her. After she has spent years losing the weight, she shows up at his house in sexy lingerie, which didn't sit well with him. He overreacts and says mean things to her.

Our hero of this story is Fire Captain Douglass Finley. He is recovering from a divorce. He has a tween aged girl. Captain Finley is also the boss of Jessica's former crush. He has some real trust issues, since his wife left him for a younger man that she has been cheating with while they were still married.

While I liked the relationship between the hero and heroine of this story. The baggage that they brought with them was a little much. There are relationship issues between Jessica and her current lover, her former crush and herself and her weight issues. More issues between Doug and his ex-wife and his inability to trust.

The real character that I liked in this story was the daughter. She was great character who didn't let her parents divorce get her down. I loved how Doug made sure to put his daughter front in his relationship.

This was a quick read. I think I read in just a few hours. I enjoyed it. I just wish there was more time spent on the relationship between Jessica and Doug and less on the baggage that accompanied them.

On the fence

And I will explain why. The heroine in the book has had a "crush" on her best friends brother since she was a young girl. However because she was overweight he never gave her a second look. So in College she and her best friend make a pact to lose weight so they can get the attention of the men they both want.

Jessica, the heroine, almost takes losing weight too far and endangers her health at one point before getting a healthy eating and exercise regimen.

Then when she was ready physically and mentally she dresses in sexy lingerie and goes to Chad's apartment and attempts to seduce him. Chad rejects her in a very cruel and humiliating way.

So instead of seeing him for the jerk he is and moving on, she gives her virginity to her personal trainer and continues to have sex with him while devising a plan to win Chads notice and affections.

Then at a charity function finds out Chad is engaged so hooks uup with a hunky fire Captain Doug. who the next day and several times thereafter wants to date her, but she keeps saying no but cannot come up with why she cannot not date him. She likes him, she lusts after him, but cannot date him. In the mean time good o l e Chad keeps treating her like dirt.

I just had a hard time with Jessica. I wanted to reach into the book and slap her silly.

Ok for an afternoon read.

This book began with promise. Having our couple meet at a NYE party and hooking up gave me hope that this book would be awesome. The first meeting was fine but about halfway through the book I knew I was going to be slightly annoyed.

(My explanations below are choppy because I don’t want to give any spoilers. Everyone had ‘conversations’ in the second half of the book that were very much “tell and not show” and they let a weird taste in my mouth).

Jessica has issues with her weight that are understandable but my tolerance for her overall changed once her confrontation/ conversation with her trainer happened. And, then once her confrontation / conversation with her ex happened, I wasn’t quite team Jessica any more.

Doug wasn’t without his issues. I kinda wanted to explain what a chill pill was to him and wanted him to play a little harder to get. I was a bit upset that he came on so strong. And how upset he was after his conversation with his coworker, was slightly over the top.

At it’s core, the book is fine. It was nice to get through a quiet afternoon. Spice level is a 3 at best and the romance level 2. This is a 3 overall.

Taboo Romance

This is a great ago gap romance.
Standalone with no Cliffhangers.
She is at the new years party to finally win the man or give him up. Boy did everything change that night. She gave up the crush for a Real man.
He had a terrible divorce and hasn't flirted in years, but he want the strawberry eating woman with a passion he has never felt before.
Sweet with drama to keep you hooked, and heat to make you blush.

Lots of Fantasies!

The New Year's Fantasy: WOW! Very Hot and Steamy romance! Fantastic writing, hot characters. I really enjoyed how Jessica and Doug and the connection that they had right off the bat. It didn't matter about the age difference to her, he was was more concerned how she felt. It was a perfect story of romance and heat.

A novella that was decently developed. It had a lot going on, and it kept my attention and was entertaining. Would have liked a little more time seeing them together and developing their relationship, but given its short length it worked for the page count. Overall, an enjoyable read.

Doug had a laid back personality and straight forward way of talking that was entertaining. Between his job and daughter he juggled his life reasonably well except for the dating side of things. However, I didn't care for Jessica. In the beginning, she waffled between Chris and Steve to the point of annoyance. I understand she had a some serious insecurities, but she could have handled her problems with more sense. And when she had her epiphany about dating..all I wanted to do was yell FINALLY!

Overall, this was a decent read. A heroine with lots of insecurities, an older seasoned hero-with his own set of insecurities, spicy sex scenes, and some odd secondary characters gave an interesting tone to this quirky holiday story.
