The moment Merewyn sets eyes on the warrior standing atop a Viking raiding ship, something inside her stirs. By all rights, she should fear him, should run from him, yet she cannot help but be drawn to him.
Eirik has never before taken a woman captive, yet Merewyn inspires a longing that calls to the darkness within him. He takes her back to his homeland as his slave, where they finally succumb to passion. And as the lines between captor and captive blur, Eirik realizes they have crossed into dangerous territory…
Harper St. George was raised in rural Alabama and along the tranquil coast of northwest Florida. It was a setting filled with stories of the old days that instilled in her a love of history, romance, and adventure. By high school, she had discovered the historical romance novel which combined all of those elements into one perfect package. She has been hooked ever since.
She lives in the Atlanta area with her husband and two children. When not writing, she can be found devouring her husband's amazing cooking and reading. She would love to hear from you. Please visit her website at harperstgeorge.com
I love a good redemption story. And by redemption I mean this story managed to redeem itself in the last quarter. Biggest plot twist of them all. 😱 And if you were following my status updates as I was reading, it wasn't looking good. 😅 Like at all. I'm talking DNF territory. Like I’d rather set my hair on fire than finish this.
First half:
Second half:
Whew. I'm stunned myself. I wasn't even planning to write a review for this cause I was struggling to get through the first half. I'm so thankful my stubborn butt wanted to reach that reading target goal for this year. 😂 Come hell or high water I was hitting that 40 finish line! #Goals 💁🏻 Usually when you hit the 60% mark in a story you pretty much see the writing on the wall how things are gonna go but here? Nope. Slow pacing issues aside, I have to seriously give props to the author Harper St. George because this is the second consecutive book by her that she side-swiped me with a plot twist a little late in the game that I didn't see coming or to be more specific--shocking my ass good with a juicy reveal that triggers you. The hero Eirik is carrying a Shameful Secret™ that is slowly and discreetly built up through the story until it's this big thing between the couple. And boy was it huge. 😭 This may not be shocking to some but for a Harlequin? 😳😓 It takes a lot to surprise me when it comes to HR tropes and this surely knocked me off my ass. I had my hunches but I honestly thought it was going to be a psych! fake out, which HR books are prone to do. Given how much this secret was dragged out and slowly (incrementally) built up I was expecting the typical "daddy didn't love me enough as a kid" sob story or he was just wounded in battle. What really worked here in it's favor was the author slowly dropping hints of what the hero is hiding and dragging it out. And the fact that Eirik I think the way the author approached it was a little different and nicely handled.
So because of this new development in the later part of the book the characters went from flat, wooden, untineresting architypes to emotionally conficted, angst-ridden, well-rounded characters in the second half. That very *rarely* happens for me. I went from not giving 2 shits for Erik or Merewyn to rooting for them to figure out a way to be together by the end. The complete shift was great to see and the characters finally coming to life and showing color was nice. I like twists, and the twist here I seriously wasn't expecting. It takes a lot to surprise me and this definitely surprised me. Was this a perfect and mind blowing read? No. But it did enough. It certainly fed my star-crossed lovers/captive falls for his prisoner appetite. 💕["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
The title alone is the reason I wanted to read this. Kidnapped by a viking? How can one apply for this? *wink* Unfortunately, this book didn't work for me. Eirik is the son of the jarl (the head dude) and:
He had amassed a fortune raiding and trading while leading his men to victories in the lands south of the North Sea. He would one day be called jarl in place of his father. When the day came that he, too, went to take his place in Asgard, the skalds would write verses of his heroic deeds.
This sounds great, but I never got a grasp on Eirik as this viking. I wanted to see him cutthroat. I wanted to see him badass. Instead it's a lot of telling and not showing and I think that hurt the development of his character. Eirik has never taken a woman hostage before, but when he sees Merewyn on a scouting trip, he has the overwhelming thought to take her for his own. The next day he sets out to find her.
The need to find her pressed tight on his chest and threatened to squeeze the air from his lungs. It was madness, sheer and utter madness. Eirik recognised it and kept a tight rein on it, refusing to give up control.
This could have been super romantic and over the top fun, but instead it fell flat for me. Merewyn doesn't have the best life in her village, but she also doesn't want to be a slave. When her town trades her to Eirik so they can keep their grain, she is terrified of going with this stranger to far off lands.
Eirik starts calling her his slave right away - people assume Merewyn is his bed slave, but Eirik doesn't want to harm her or force her to do something she isn't ready for - so instead he just orders her around. Calling her "slave" felt off to me in the context of this book. Merewyn whimpers and is jumpy in the background for a lot of the book. Nothing really fun happens! I wanted Eirik to have a sense of humor or to be really surly or something! He just didn't have enough personality. And with Merewyn so meek, there wasn't a lot to engage me.
Viking? (Reminded me of my another favorites Neil. When I completed this Viking's story, I read that Viking's story too.)
So. This was a buddy read with Aksa.
‘You won’t be harmed in my care. From this day forward, you are mine.’
Eirik, a Dane and son of a Jarl, who soon is to be a leader, on one of his raids watches Merewyn dancing on the beach. From the moment he sees her, he is drawn to her. When Merewyn's sister-in-law gives her away, Eirik takes her away as a slave. When they spend time together, they both get to know each other. However, Eirik can't stop thinking about her and his feelings about her are growing. Also, Merewyn is also confused about him. She wants to go back, but at the same time she can't enough of her captor. However, to become a leader, Eirik have to marry, but he can't marry a slave. How will he protect her? How will he deal his relationship with his slave? Will Merewyn stay as a slave forever?
Such a beautiful story! Based on 856 A.D., a time when Vikings were a real thing, this story deals with some heavy subjects, but the author did a wonderful job in presenting them and telling a fascinating story. I loved how Eirik redeemed himself and his love in the end. (I was worrying from the chapter 1 about how their story would end and I must say the ending made me very happy and satisfied!)
I loved this book! A beautifully evocative setting filled with engaging, intriguing characters. The tension between Eirik and Merewyn is enticing, and their chemistry practically leaps off the page. Lush, sensual, and wildly entertaining. I can't wait to read more from this author!
While yes, the idea of a master-slave relationship is horrific from a modern standpoint, the relationship developed here (and the kindness, gentleness, loyalty, and honor of Eirick) make it one of survival within the rules of a thousand years ago—and a beautiful love story. He’s a really, really, really good book boyfriend ❤️ Now on to the rest of the series.
Enslaved by the Viking is the first in Harper St. George’s “Viking Warrior” series. WOW, what a fantastic start to this series!
Eirik is a Dane warrior and the son of the jarl Hegard. He has lead his men on countless victories and collected a fortune from raids and trading. One day he will take his father’s place as leader.
Merewyn is a Saxon maiden, the sister to the Lord of Wexbrough Manor in Northumbria. One morning while taking her daily stroll along the beach she spots the enemy Northmen in ships coming toward her…
From the moment Eirik sees Marewyn on the beach he’s drawn to her. So when they raid Wexbrough Manor he ends up taking her home as his personal slave. Eirik is a tortured soul who is marred by an experience from his past. He knows he must eventually marry if he is to become Jarl some day. But he struggles with the growing feelings he has for Marewyn his slave and the promise he made to keep her safe. Both Eirik and Marewyn struggle to fight the pull that seems to drive them towards each other. It was evident that both Eirik and Marewyn were good people caught up in a situation that felt at times that it was hopeless. This story dealt with some heavy subjects, but author Harper St. George did a wonderful job in dealing with them and telling a fascinating story that I really couldn’t put down. I actually finished it in one day I was so caught up in the storyline. This was a beautifully written story of a couple who overcame extreme circumstances to find love. With intriguing secondary characters that I hope to see more of in the coming series, I would definitely recommend this book!
I dislike the repetitive repeating and disrespect of how he wants her so much but treats her like a slave yes I no she was but it annoyed me and how he just wants her body which I feel there was to much hanky panky which I didn't care for as I didn't like the characters, She was the same but she was forever contradicting herself I got whiplash lol , I honestly didn't feel any connection to the story and didn't really care to finish but I hate to DNF books so until over half way when the story got a bit interesting and then I enjoyed the story from that point on I did like gunner tho so because of him and the last half of the story I gave it 3 stars
I won a copy of this book through a GoodReads giveaway. It was a quick read, but it didn't really do much for me. The characters were under-developed and kind of flat. More of a backstory would have helped.
Insomma, gravemente diludente. Devo spiegarvi tutto io?
[I received a copy of this book, and I'm truly thankful to Harper for her kindness. I enjoyed this book and I'm gladly giving it a review.]
After finding out Harper's books I knew I had to read them. I have had a fascination for Vikings since I was 12 and read Sandra Carvalho's books, even though those are Fantasy and Historical Romances. So, last night when I was reading the book, I had to stop for a moment and just let my heart go through all the 'saudade'.
Just for those that don't know, 'saudade' is a Portuguese word. And in this particular case, I'm using the word in a more casual say of saying I miss someone or something, even if I can see that person or thing in the near future... It's not nostalgia, since nostalgia is a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time, and we can feel 'saudade' for something that might never have happened.
Anyway, in this case, I'm talking about a book and a story.
Like I said in other occasions, I love Sandra Carvalho's books and the first impact that Harper's book gave me was 'saudade' for that other book and story. Which means, Harper's words and storytelling abilities made me emotional.
Because of that unexpected burst of emotion I felt, I decided to go to sleep, and I kept reading this morning. I was calmer and I didn't felt that feeling of 'saudade' again.
Harper St. George has a brilliant way of using words in her storytelling, just like a lot of our authors whose books I have fall in love, that are in the Historical Romance genre. From the brilliant images she created of the first time Eirik saw Merewyn, to all the descriptions that gave the story some very vivid images in my mind.
That's actually how the book starts, with the first time Eirik sees Merewyn and how she ended up being his captive.
Eirik is this strong Viking Warrior, son of a jarl - Jarl Hegard - and he's a great leader, but he also has his demons, nightmares that torture him every night. Merewyn is a Saxon noblewoman, sister of a lord - Lord Alfred - and she's strong-minded, but also kind and loving.
Two characters that made me love the story so much that I couldn't put down the book this morning. Their interactions made me go "WOW", laugh, blush, then cry (because of a particular moment of trust and a secret revealed), then I was blushing and smiling again.
I met a lot of other characters in this book that I love, and I'm happy that they have their own books. And this book was definitely a fantastic start of a series... plus, if you have never read Historical Romances about Vikings, this is an awesome book/series to get you started.
That been said, of course I recommend this book!
There is no doubt in my mind that this is a 5* read.
THIS WAS AMAZING! I ALMOST IGNORED THIS BOOK MAINLY BECAUSE THE BLURB WAS SO TYPICAL AND DIDN'T MAKE ME THINK MUCH OF IT.
HOW WRONG I WAS!
HERO is not like our usual Viking warriors that we've met. While he's strong, handsome and brave, he's actually one plagued by nightmares of his past. Here's a nice surprise, Eirick is actually a virgin and it's a conscious decision on his part manipulated by his trauma. When he goes raiding in Northumbria, he catches a glimpse of Merewyn and the blood in his veins sing with want and need to possess his beautiful noblewoman. Taking her as his slave, she is anything but as the sexual tension arises and builds steadily throughout the story before passion takes its reign. I think the author did a splendid job on bringing their chemistry to life and the sexual tension was smouldering the pages like nobody's business. Eirick is torn between duty to become Jarl and also the love of his slave. Their moments together while started off rocky and hostile, soon turns into passionate, sweet and just too cute for words. You'll have to experience the INTENSITY of their relationship itself. It was seriously INTENSE. Not in the dark way but one of emotional feelings. Theirs was sort of in the forbidden love category.
HEROINE is a noblewoman who hasn't been treated well by her sister in law, and her brother isn't doing anything to stop the abuse. She doesn't have much going on in her life and it plummets when she's captured by vikings and turned into a slave. Yet, Eirick awakens her feminine sexuality and as much as she wants to hate her captor, she's also irresistably drawn to him. It won't be long before she succumbs to him and together they build a love nest of them agaisnt the world. When reality crashes in, it all depends on what Eirick will do, the lengths he will go to keep her. As a character, Merewyn is quite realisitic and certainly not annoying. She has her fears, doubts and also merely a woman in love with a man.
OVERALL it was one of those love passionate stories that will light a fire in your heart. It certainly kept me going until the end because it was that good to not put down. Can't wait to read more from this author.
Well it's safe to say harper st george has done it again! Such an amazing book that had me hooked on the first few chapters. Enslaved by a viking is book 1 in the viking warriors series. Having only read her outlaws of the wild west series I was intrigued and excited to read her viking series and wasn't disappointed.
Merewyn is an un-married saxons woman living with her brother and sister in law. She is taken captive by Eirik a strong kind hearted viking who Is tortured by his past. Have to say when he finally reveals to Merewyn his secret from his past it definitely was not what was expecting! You find out before the big reveal that he is a Virgin and doesn't like to be touched so it keeps you guessing what could off affected him so much in the past to torment him now. You very slowly start to see the passion between Merewyn ans erirk build and as that does the line between captor and captive give. He struggles with his growing feelings for Merewyn. He's father hopes for him to become the next hark and would never premit him to marry his slave.
Such a beautiful well written book. She had some hard subjects to write about new the book which could off made or broke the book, but she handled it perfectly.
Look forward to wading the next book in the series.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves saucy viking romances.
Though the fact that the heroine was made into a slave deeply disturbed me, I really liked this book and have reread it a few times. Unlike other books I've read with a similar concept, this book gives some insight into what it would feel like to have few rights and the move into a world where you have none and no idea of what will happen to you. At any time, Eirick could have forgotten about Merewyn and she would have no control of what happened to her.
I did like the main characters, and this book gives good insight into some of the characters that make up the other books in the series. What was unusual was how naive and innocent both characters are. Though Eirick would have been assumed to have been worldlier than Merewyn, he was more innocent when it came to his emotions and deep feelings. I figured out early on what Eirick's secret was. I figured he had to have either done something completely horrible or had something completely horrible done to him.
I did like the relationship between Eirick, Gunnar, and Vidar. They seemed believable. I especially loved the fight scene in Gunnar's room. Total dysfunctional family move. Lol. What I didn't get was the coldness of Merewyn's brother. It was as if he never loved her.
Did not love the first half of the book. Merewyn was whiny and Eirik was remote. The ferocious Viking he was purported to be only surfaced twice, in fistfights... over Merewyn. The second half picked up quite a bit. I was honestly curious as to how the author would resolve the "conflicts" but was pleasantly surprised.
Regardless, I liked Gunnar, who seemed like a good complex character, and I think I'll enjoy his book. I wonder if he's "next".
ed. to add, I just want to say that I think Ms. St. George was ill-served by the cover for this book. That skinny guy on the cover looks nothing like the giant, muscular Viking Eirik is described to be.

Romance is a fairly new genre for me, so I don’t know how standard this sort of structure is, but it felt really messy to me. There wasn’t a clear emotional through-line - it could have done with a tighter edit, as the characters’ emotions flip-flopped drastically, sometimes from love to hate to love in a single page.
Though I was pleasantly surprised to find a male romantic hero who is (SPOILER) the survivor of a gang rape. I mean, it is glossed over very easily, but still, it’s interesting to have such deep trauma even mentioned. The happily-ever-after was utterly unrealistic historically speaking, but hey, it’s a romance.

To Tame A Viking - A short story connected to Enslaved by the Viking (which I haven’t read) reviewed here as I cannot find it elsewhere.
Returned to her home, Merewyn finds herself caught between her Saxon servants who consider her a traitor and her husband’s warriors who no longer know how to treat her now she is no longer a bed-slave but their Jarl’s wife. Merewyn believes that time will soften the views of both sides but unknown to her there is a plot afoot that may change her future. A quick short coffee-break read.
Eirik is definitely one of the more interesting Viking characters, and he makes the traditional Viking romance a lot more palatable (if I continually find Viking romances unpalatable why do I keep reading them? idfk). Unfortunately Merewyn is incredibly boring, and it felt like a chore to get through the novel.
I've read some of Harper St. George's regency/Victorian romances and was similarly unimpressed, so maybe she's just not for me.
Loved this book so much! It starts with Merewyn and Eirik seeing each other for the first time when Eirik comes to Northumbria and Merewyn is on the beach. Their love journey is one filled with questions, epiphanies and understanding the love is what makes someone the happiest.
100% recommend to those who love a good romance story with spicy scenes.
