What happens when you put two beautiful people together and their godly like persona is nothing like their id? Opting for reclusiveness has left Her inexperienced in love. . . and sex . . . and friendship. . . and, you get it. She wasn’t born with the fear to exploit life; thank the abandonment of Her mother at a young age for that. Especially because it's left Her with self-destructive torments. She has a lot to discover, and so does He for that matter. The sociable business owner never intended on meeting the girl He considers a Goddess, but their paths cross and He gets hooked, but He’s not willing to lose everything, like His self-destructing girlfriend. His life has an already content paved out future with another woman, and Her life is safer on the recluse side with another man. Neither are ready when their infidelity goes beyond sexual release. She will start deconstructing Her placid life because of Him, and He will begin to rebuild His opulent life around Her. Their lives become quite the affair. . . . Literally. Ian Jacks and Lilith Tudor are too smart and beautiful to be so unhinged, and how long can they keep their immoral secrets?
**There is explicit language, descriptive sex, homosexuality, drug use, and infidelity within the pages of this book**
**Reviewed for EBooks Galore** I read hundreds of books a year. Most for pleasure, many for review, all because I love getting lost in a well-told story (bonus if it has sexy times). Destructive Gods is a violation of everything I enjoy in a book. I will detail my displeasures below, but let me say at the start that I do not believe this book to be irredeemable, if allowed to spend time with competent editors, copy editors, and several drastic revisions.
Destructive Gods follows Lilith, a passive, waif of a girl living under the thumb of an overbearing older man who treats her like a child. My first issue is with the boyfriend, Sloan. There is NO reason for Lilith to be with him, since he is without a single positive characteristic. I'm so unsympathetic to him due to the author's heavy-handed painting of him as a villain that it affects my feelings towards Lilith as well. What's wrong with her that she stays with this guy?
Very early on, Lilith meets Ian in an elevator. Ian's girlfriend lives on he 14th floor, Lilith on the 18th. This is important because between the lobby and floor 18 of their very first meeting, Ian and Lilith have sex. Yep. Both cheat on their significant others in the what, two minute elevator ride? It's ridiculous, unbelievable, and frankly, it pissed me off. There's fiction, and then there's completely unbelievable. Based on the way the author painted Lilith, it was just frustratingly forced. The (first) sex happens 2% into the story.
In addition to the crazy sex, the beginning of the book is littered with strange vocabulary. I'm a certified high school English teacher and several of the words were unfamiliar to me (not even my kindle knew what they were). In the first quarter of the book, I highlighted more than two dozen words that were unnecessarily rare. Example: "She was his cacoethes, and he needed to hear he was her gluttonous requisite." Cacoethes? Really? I'm all for using a strong vocabulary instead of repeating words, but this sounded like the author simply replaced words using an online dictionary of synonyms. It was jarring.
When the vocabulary isn't enough to put you off, the overuse of adverbs is. Stephen King once said that adverbs should be used only when absolutely necessary; he cited an overuse of adverbs as one of his biggest pet peeves with regards to JK Rowling's Harry Potter series. Destructive Gods is littered with them. For example: "You always do," she giggled humorlessly, unknowingly to him. A good editor can point these out to an author, let him or her know there are better ways to explain action and emotion.
Every chapter has a word title - Ein, Tveir, Prir, etc - I assume those are chapter numbers in a different language, but they are never explained. It was a distraction, but one I could dismiss after a while. What I couldn't dismiss as easily were the boldface headers over sections of the book: "What He can't describe is what He craves" "It's better than She ever knew" He and She are continuously capitalized, but I couldn't see what the headers had to do with the content of the section. They didn't prep me for what was coming, and just frustrated me each time I came across one. And they happen a LOT. The only thing they and the oft- used *LUXE* header do are make me aware of a shift in point of view. The book goes back and forth from first person (both Lilith and Ian) to third person. If not for the headers it would be more abrupt, but it still took a paragraph or two for me to figure out who was speaking and why the shift was happening. The book would have been much stronger had it stayed in one person's point of view OR in the third person. The constant shifting was dizzying.
At 25%, I nearly quit. I nearly marked the book as DNF and moved on with my life. But I persevered, mainly because I was given the book to review. Thankfully, the vocabulary settled down after that and the adverbs, while still happening too often, occasionally gave way to stronger language.
At the heart of this story is a couple (Lilith and Ian) who try to navigate the messiness of having an affair. Neither of them want to leave their over-the-top horrible significant others (while Sloan is overbearing, old, and rigid, Ian's girlfriend Karen is of the "leave me and I'll kill myself" type). Events conspire to free Lilith from her relationship first, which leads her down ever widening yellow brick roads. Alcohol. Pot. Lesbianism. One night stands. Cocaine. On and on and on. While I love when a character grows as a person through his or her journey, every thing Lilith did made me like her less. She was completely unlikeable. Ian was no better, as he flat out refuses to leave his girlfriend, even when she is hospitalized for her craziness. "There was something about Karen he needed and Lilith didn't know what it was." I kept expecting there to be a point in the story where Ian makes the choice to be with Lilith, but it never happens. He just convinces her that he can be with them both, without Karen being any the wiser.
Ultimately, despite the issues I have with the quality of the writing, it was the relationship between Ian and Lilith that gave this book one star. They are dishonest with each other, they make almost no effort to turn their affair into any kind of real relationship, and they allow their lust-fueled behavior to hurt almost everyone around them. They are impossible to like or root for. I can't say I feel bad for Sloan or Karen, either, though, so really there wasn't a single person I could identify with in the entire novel. And really - isn't that the point of reading a book?
Bravo ***** What a great Debut novel by H.q Frost. Is was absolutely fabulous. This story sucks you right in, it was so much more than I expected.
What I loved the most about this book is you get to see things through all the characters eyes. You know what all party's involved are thinking, and going through, and yet your still on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. Destructive Gods is most definitely a page turner. I could not put it down. I absolutely loved this book !
Lilith has not had an easy life. Tragedy started when her mom ran off. Her father became an alcoholic, then liver cancer took over. Lilith is young, beautiful, quite, somewhat shy, reserved, her clothes are outdated, she wears no make up and very inexperienced and naive when it comes to men, sex or the real world.
Sloan (Lilith boyfriend) is much older, manipulating, very controlling, demanding, and treats Lilith like a child. Lilith moved in with Sloan little over 10 months ago. They got together shortly after she started working part time for him while going to school. He is her first and only boyfriend she has ever had and She loves him because he takes care of her in a fatherly way. For Sloan he just wants complete control over her. What she wares, what she eats, when she goes to bed he even tucks her in. Lilith soon realizes she loves Sloan but has never been in love with him. She sees him more of a father figure than a boyfriend.
Excerpts ~ Sloan He cautiously approached her desk, planning his words carefully. “Sweetheart, I don’t know what it is, but since last night you’ve been divergent.” He knelt at her side and placed his hand gingerly on her leg. “You just sexually attacked me while we kneeled before your desk. Is there something upsetting you?” Those words turned her stomach: ‘sexually attacked’. Lacking vivaciousness in a relationship hardly gave just cause to calling her attempt at a spark a sexual attack. “Maybe it’s my time of the month.” The sweetest, most fake tone she could muster backed her words, and her blank stare settled on her boyfriend’s face. “I’m sorry I’ve been acting so strangely.” That was the second she realized she was never in love with him. She loved him because he took care of her in a sick, fatherly type of way, showing some semblance of love for her. But in love? The excited butterflies and nervous giggles; she’d never experienced that for Sloan. “Would you like to go home and take a rest?”
Ian is a is rich, good looking and is currently in a relationship with Karen who is constantly screaming suicide for attention. They have a history together and Ian fears change, even though he is pretty sure she is cheating. He has an older twin sister who I absolutely love. She is fun, witty and let a little on the wild side.
You can definitely feel the connection between Lilith and Ian. It's there it's strong and it's hot as hell !!!
The first time Lilith see Ian she feels drawn to him. He awakens every part of her.
Ian feels this connection to her he can not explain he has never felt this way before. The magnetic pull is just to great to try and fight.
Meeting Ian completely changes her life. She changed they way she dresses, the way she talks, she is doing things she never dreamed she would do. She finds herself falling in love with Ian, but afraid of the complications change will bring. Ian loves her too but he is not willing to admit it to her or leave his girlfriend because Karen is a safe bet. He does not want to be alone. He is afraid of the love he has for Lilith. She has the ability to destroy him. Excerpts Ian And why the fuck can’t I just break up with Karen? I suppose it’s the fear that Lily and I won’t work out, but I’d pretty much do anything for that girl. I just don’t think the feelings are mutual. I know she likes me, but I think she’s starting to see she likes a lot of things, and I only introduced her to them. You’re only in school with your teacher for nine months and then you move on. That’ll be the relationship we have. I glance up and see her sleeping on the couch with her hands tucked to her cheek and her lips parted only a little, showing she’s at peace in drunken slumber. I want to sit by her side and stare at her while caressing her silky skin until she wakes up. I know it’s fucking weird, and I’ve never done that before, but this girl is like watching a mythological creature. Yes, I’m comparing her to a fucking unicorn. I think I’m going insane thanks to this girl.
Ian and Lilth will take you on an adventure full of love, lust, laughter and heartache. This Is A Must Read !!!
DESTRUCTIVE GODS (A LUXE NOVEL By: Author H.Q. Frost
I've said this before while reading a couple books and I once again am going to say it again. You know you are reading a really awesome book when all your senses are so engaged that you get to the last page and keep flicking your finger across your e-reader because the realization that the story is at the end does not even register! This was me at the end/next chapter of Lily and Ian's seductive, destructive story! DESTRUCTIVE GODS (A LUXE NOVEL is a sexy, erotic, amazing romance with the emotional depth to captivate every reader in it's silky tangled web. With a inky touch of darkness to shadow some of the innocence of the main character never taking away the feeling that deep down a light still shines just as brightly as when it was lit. I loved this book by H.Q. Frost and if I would have never been told that this was her first book, I would have never even known! I fully recommend this book to 18+up due to adult situations. Please read the authors blurb and advisory before purchasing.
I was given a copy of this book by the author for a honest review. All thoughts and feelings are my own.
Please please please write another book soon! I just finished this book earlier today, and I'm now struggling to find another I can get into! My mind just keeps going back to the characters in this book and their story! I truly loved this book, and not just because of the sex :) but I was drawn into the characters personalities! The way they tAlked and communicated with each other it reminded me of my real life friends and fiance and kept me connected! I can't wait to read the next!!! Love
I really do not know where to start. I loved this book and was so sad when it ended, i felt like i was saying good by to good friends. I loved our two main characters and all their adventures, oh my was there alot of those. It was intresting to see the point of view of not only the leads but the other characters too, i haven't read a book that's done that before so that was refreshing. Having said all that the ending left me on a love hate emotion. There is a happy ending but not your conventional one. Well done H.Q. Frost for a fab read.
Was kindly gifted this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
What a brilliant debut novel. I was captivated from the first chapter. It's erotic, heartwarming and a little bit dark all at the same time. Passion between Ian and Lily just sizzles the pages and they will take you on a journey you won't forget him a hurry.
Only negative for me was the flicking between the characters. I found it hard to keep up and a little confusing.
In some respects, this was a great book because it kept my interest until the very end.The storyline was creative and original and the characters were well developed. It was obvious to me that the author put a lot of thought into the writing of this book. What bothers me the most about the book are the relationships between the characters and how they treated each other.
Lilith and Ian met by chance and experienced an instant sexual connection that sets the stage for the rest of the book. They use each other while they are still involved with other people, and they find it impossible to be away from each other. Lilith comes to realize that she enjoys the intimate side of her relationship with Ian, and she is determined to make up for lost time. Ian is obsessed with Lilith and he does everything he can to arrange times when they can be together. He does take care of her when she has a problem with her boyfriend, which she appreciates, but she never seems to understand how much he really wants and needs her. She spends her time exploring different types of relationships because she feels that if he is still involved with his girlfriend, she can do whatever she wants.
How does Ian feel about Lilith’s other relationships? Does he understand why she has to behave this way?
Is Lilith really happy with herself or will her need to be loved result in dire consequences?
“Destructive Gods” is a deep, intense exploration of forbidden relationships and how they can completely change the life you once had. Lilith and Ian’s story continues with the next book in the series, “Destructive Luxe.”
Where do I begin? Destructive Gods is the tale of Lillith and Ian, and everyone in between. Both are in rocky relationships with other people when they happen upon each other. There is an instant attraction, and they find themselves unable to keep away from each other.
I'm not a huge fan of cheating, but in this instance, both partners were not particularly likable, so it was easier to let it slide. I found myself hoping they would end up together and ditch their partners. Sloan and Karen are hard work. Both controlling and manipulative, it's hard to find any redeeming quality in them.
There are many sex scenes in this book, and I have to admit, they were pretty hot. That being said, I found Lilly's promiscuity to be quite full on. When she stumbled across Ian, he awakened her sexual desires and it seemed as though she couldn't control herself when propositioned by anyone. Though I have to say, I was kinda hoping her and Ashley would get more of a go at it. I liked them together, they were fun and cute.
One thing I have to mention is the plethora of words I'd never heard of. There were several instances (especially in the beginning of the book) where I had to look up the meanings of more than one word in a sentence/paragraph. I do like learning new words, but it was a little distracting at times.
I'm interested to see where things go from here. How will it all play out? Who will Lilly end up staying with? Or will she just play the field for a while? Good thing there's a follow up in Destructive Luxe!
****WARNING**** many changes of panties may be needed. Holy Hell is Destructive Gods one steaming sexy hot read. Lily and Ian scorch the sheets as well as the pages through out this book. Lily may be on the verge of finding herself but let me tell you she sure goes all out doing it. At first Lily may seem innocent but once a chance run in with Ian all innocence is blown out the window. Ian may come off as an a$$ that can't make up his mind at times but he is so loveable at the same damn time. Yes I swooned a little whenever Ian and Lily are together. I applaud Lily for trying new and a variety at times too. It is refreshing to find her coming into her own. This is a love story twisted up in trying to do the right thing, finding yourself in the process and finding the one you can't let go. The antics of Lily may have you rolling your eyes or even changing your panties. I mean lets face it Lily gets herself into some hot situations. I love H. Q. Frost and what she brings to the pages in every book she writes and can't wait to see where this series goes from here. Something tells me this is just going to get hotter.
I enjoyed the drama in this book and will read the next books. However the language use felt like the author sat with a list of unusual vocabulary words and tried to include at least one complicated word on each page. While I typically enjoy learning new vocabulary through reading the language used here at times felt forced and at other times I wasn’t sure if it was an editing mistake or bad grammar.
SPOiILERS AHEAD!
The author failed to show why Ian feels so strongly about his girlfriend or rather says he loves her while all his actions show otherwise. After incident in his apartment with her smashing his furniture and hitting him it felt that he was finally done with her but no later he says they will try again.
I thought it was appropriate that Ian did not leave Karen at the end. Often romance novels make everything tie perfectly at the end which not only does not mimic life but also completely drains the angst factor. I like stories that carry that angst through the end but in light of that that Lilly did not accept his side piece offer at the end. I was really rooting for her to walk away but will read the other books to see if she finally wised up.
OH. MY. GOOOOOOOD!!! What a book!!! Wow. Ian and Lilly, HOT!! Little Lilly’s sowing her oats in this book! She’s been sheltered and now she’s spreading her wings, and her legs lmao ( go girl! Get it) she doesn’t realize what she has to offer and everyone just falls at her feet because of her sweetness and beauty. She’s in a relationship with an older man, Sloane (ewwww) and one day while on the elevator going heme locks eyes with sexy AF Ian (who’s in the building to visit his GF Karen SUPREME BEE-ACH) HOT elevator sex later, they can’t get each other out of their heads. And so the story begins mwahahahaha which is what I’m sure H. Q. Frost said when she wrote this! The supporting characters Ashley, and Ceaser, and the all the doormen this book is just EVERYTHING!!! Can’t wait to start the next one in the series!!! You are amazing FROSTY
So this book is driving me absolutely crazy! Some....most of the choices that Ian and Lily make, make me want to reach through my kindle and shake them. I mean seriously, what were they thinking, but I will tell you that I could not put this book down! I was sucked in waiting to see what they did next.
Lily is unsatisfied with her life but loves her boyfriend and is content. Her boyfriend Sloan takes care of everything for her and she moves through life smiling while hiding her shame.
Ian spends most of his time working and when he’s not working, he is spending time dealing with his longtime girlfriend. He knows that he needs to make a change but fears the repercussions.
From literally the first moment they meet, a spark ignites that will change everything they thought they knew. Limits are tested, boundaries are pushed and nothing will ever be the same. Which life will they choose?
This is a great debut novel for HQ Frost and I can not wait to read more of Ian and Lily!
I'm sincere, at first, I did not understand the story but as I was reading I'm caught, it's true that this story is for open minds because it's strong and uncensored but it's great, I recommend it Congratulations H.Q. Frost
Some books are just not for everyone !! Sorry but the writing style and characters did nothing for me. I had high hopes from this story, but just had to stop.
This is the first book I read by this author. I will be honest and say I was thrown at first, but once I wrapped my head around what was going on I couldn't put this down until I finished it. H.q. delivers a story so unique I have nothing to compare it to. I will say read the book description then under that the note from the author, once you've read that and are good with it..buy this book, you won't regret it!!!
Destructive Gods is the quite aptly named debut novel by H.Q. Frost and it's not for the faint of heart. If you want your run of the mill HEA...this book is not for you. If you are easily put off by fictional tales of infidelity, drug use, self-mutilation and sexual discovery, then you need to find another book to pick up. However, if you can read a story of a young woman that has led a sheltered life and is finally coming into her own...I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by this book.
The story of Lilith and Ian is not sweet and destined for a happily ever after. Lilith is troubled and sheltered. Ian was a playboy that's recently tried to tame his ways. Together they are a force of nature and not necessarily for the good. When they meet the attraction is instant and uncontrollable. It's not pretty. It's certainly not simple. What it is...a journey through self-discovery of two souls that will never be the same after one chance meeting in an elevator.
I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this book. I wasn't sure if I could overlook the drug-use or the cutting and get past the fact the entire book is based around an affair. It keeps you on your toes while switching between Ian and Lilith's POV and third person omniscient. There were also a few editing issues, but in the end she won me over. I couldn't stop coming back for more. If you are open-minded and tired of the same old story line in every book...you need to give this one a try.
This is H.Q.'s debut novel and one of those books you have to read for yourself. I don't want to give any spoilers away, or ruin it for anyone else but if your looking for love, sex and drama, then this is the book for you. It was longer then what I thought but it was worth it. It wasn't a perfect book, there were some things that pissed me off, but that's what a book is supposed to do, right? :) I also hear another book is around the corner!
this book was a panty wetter. if you do not like reading something is completely different, out there and sexy than move on. BUT if sexy sex, and partying is your thing READ. this book will make you angry and excited then pissed again all at once!!! loved
Frost is guaranteed to provide an f-ed up story. Destructive Gods is the most f-ed up one yet! Lily and Ian both want each other but don't know what they want besides that. After meeting Ian, Lily falls from the perfect life she thinks she has into one completely new to her. For sure a wild ride. Can't wait until the next book is back available.
